    I am not a customer of PAA. I'm a huge fan!!!
    PAA is what took me from the wet shaving rabbit hole into the fragrance rabbit hole. It really started with a Doppelganger of Sartorial, which led me to buy the actual Penhaligon's Sartorial.
    Other great small businesses making shave and scent products are Stirling Soaps, whose Sharp Dressed Man scent line turned me onto Green Irish Tweed, and is damn close to my nose, and Fine whose "L'Orange Noir" made Terre D'Hermes a must buy.

    Hey Daver! I’ve been using PAA products for years and they are great. The scents they put out are fantastic and some you should try are Red Planet, High Jump 47, Strange Island (seasonal), and Agharta. I agree that Son of Honeysuckle is the best honeysuckle scent. What’s great is that you can buy samples of their aftershaves for $1 each to see if you like the scent instead of spending $25 on a full bottle.

    I’ve looked at getting some of their soaps but man that catalogue is overwhelming!
    I had no idea where to even begin. I believe they have a crown king formula in their shaving line that is supposed to be phenomenal.
    I had way too many soaps stacked up so I promised myself to finish them before buying anything new.
    He’s come a long way from when I got into the hobby in 2017. Seems like a solid dude who has grown a lot as an artisan and person thru trial and error.

    • @FragranceBros
      @FragranceBros  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      absolutely solid! So many great scents from his line! And yes, the CK-6 shave soap formula is probably the one you are referring to, and it's absolutely best in class. But I also really like his regular formula as well. As far as his catalogue, he has a lot, but he does sell samples for a good price, so you can always try the scents before you buy them (but the samples are the .7ml sticks). Here are a few of my favorites from their mainstays: Al Fin, Cad, Meta Nectar, John Frum, Organism 46-B, Future Fiction, Hotel Cecil, and Fresco. Of course, if you like the clones that I mentioned, those are well-worth it, especially for the grooming products. And if you like Bay Rum, he has probably the best I've tried, as well as several different variations on the theme. The seasonal releases are outstanding too, but they are limited. Hope that helps narrow it down a bit. 🙂

      I’ve always longed for that original Old Spice. It’s so classic and so nostalgic. Recreating that is awesome stuff. The shaving soap “clones” aren’t the same to me as the Parfums Vintage ballsacks. He’s actually not shy about creating something that doesn’t exist to match a scent and charges the fee commensurate with the product. Another great video sir.

    Was introduced to their stuff at a cigar shop in Galena, IL. Just fantastic. My favorite scent so far is Praise John Frum, bought the aftershave from the shop. Went to their online shop to buy a shaving kit, to start wet shaving, got the Sangre De Drago. That scent is also amazing. My wife is wanting me to buy their aftershave's for family and friends for Christmas, but I'm having a hard time picking scents, don't want to buy someone else a scent I might want for myself. Agharta: ancient vanilla sandlewood
    Copalli: Ancient sandlewood
    Solstice: sweet desert juice
    St. Martin's place: fresh bubbly lime soda with a kick of ginger
    The Wow Signal: funky sweet tobacco

    I'm a PAA connoisseur and I never even knew PAA made deodorant and body wash. I use PAA for their shave soaps. They're my absolute favorite hands down. Such incredible scents and very long lasting, added bonus I love the artwork lol.
    I buy aftershave splashes to combine with the shave soap and wow they all smell so good it's so hard to narrow it down but my personal favorite is black droid just a classic manly scent. I also love atomic pumpkin around fall time, and coconut bay is fantastic. gondolier is very popular but to me it smells like a less potent version of black droid, so I always just get black droid instead. Cavendish is very popular tobacco grungy dark smell. the beach is definitely their most popular but tbh I don't care for it. smells just fine, just not strong enough for me.
    Craziest part is, with all that said, I've only scratched the surface of their scents. It's honestly overwhelming how many scents they have and just as this video mentions they always come out with limited time release and special releases and seasonal releases ON TOP of their line of regular scents. Great company

      Yes. Clown Fruit is really something. I ordered a sample too late in and missed out on buying the "seasonal" Clown Fruit....but when I got the sample it is just as you said. Burnt Sugar, some kind of fruity note, a slight floral in there buried, what smells like tobacco and it's definitely a gourmand but it's better than any gourmand at the fancy department stores. It's raw, unapologetic and primal. The kind of daring scent you will NEVER find at a fancy shop. It's real fragrance art that is worthy of an award.......and I typically don't like gourmands, but this one is unique.

      I would contact them and ask for a replacement. I have their F-bomb deodorant and it definitely has a smell to it. The texture of their deodorant is on the tacky side though. as an EDP what is your opinion as far as strength and lasting power? Twee! vs Creed green Irish tweed in edp is a $300 difference. I used to be a door to door cologne salesmen many years ago. the guy I worked for was a chemist in the creation in a lot of the scents and was sued. the Supreme Court ruled in his favor because he was able to prove that body chemistry changes a scent once applied from person to person. So, given the choice between the official brand or something as good as PAA, which would you choose?

    • @FragranceBros
      @FragranceBros  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love PAA, but in my opinion, the only reason to by a clone is if the original is out of production. PAA specializes in older scents that are out-of-production, and they do a great job at recreating them. I think what is great about PAA is that they have a variety of products that use each scent (soap, deodorant, aftershave, shave soap, etc). I think getting those products in a clone is better.

    I'm way ahead of you man. I post on Basenotes with all of my shaving sets. And I have some pretty intricate, sometimes antique shaving sets, but I digress. I have been posting Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements since back in 2016/2017 on Basenotes. No joke. Some of their original scents like "The Beach" and "Sangre de Drago" (an absolutely STELLAR Dragon's Blood Resin scent) and IMO, the best Bay Rum ever made in Atomic Age Bay Rum. I also enjoy Solstice, a scent that smells like the dry desert breeze of the Southwestern U.S. and Tombstone which is roses, gunpowder, geranium and tobacco. I LOVE this house and it's the house I own the 2nd most fragrances from in my entire wardrobe. Creed is #1 and Phoenix Artisan is #2. That's right. Out of my over 100 bottle fragrance collection, my #2 most owned house is Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements.
    I also think some other scents are very underrated like Big Shave East, which is a simple trio of Frangipani, Tobacco, and Apricot. Not complex? Just try it. It's simple but that's all it has to be because it's GENIUS.
    There are so many scents they have. As Dave pointed out, a very unusual fragrance that is completely 'niche' like you would expect from some odd house selling it for a ridiculous price is the petrichor inspired La Tierra Mojada (...the wet earth). Yeah, but it's a bit more than that to my nose. It has a little bit of a "tart sourness" with what smells like genuine rain and wet dirt. The shaving soap smells even more earthy than the EDP. I think this scent is worth buying a sample.
    Did I mention they sell samples? Yeah. Go to their website and just queue up like 15-20 samples and have them shipped to you. Pull up each fragrance on their website to see the scent notes and open each sample vial and smell it. Try dabbing some on a test strip and letting it dry down. (These still need to be on your skin to get a good idea of how they will smell, as with any other fragrance.)
    Thank you Dave for putting out a video on this brand. They deserve it. PAA is literally one of the best fragrance makers you've never heard of. And they are genuinely humble. I've emailed them and praised their fragrances and I've received responses that they are such a small operation that they have trouble being able to carry so many scents and it's almost as if they were trying to get me not to push their fragrances out there so hard. But, I was like, your scents smell so amazing!
    Both Douglas Smythe and his partner in perfume Frances Towlle are very talented at making fragrances. I think their crowning achievement is Atomic Age Bay Rum. It smells like a kitchen spice rack marinated in bay leaf oil and real rum. The fragrance is literally barrell-aged like a spirit. No joke. It smells stunningly natural and potent. There is NO WAY these fragrances they make are IFRA compliant (shhh). They are just too natural. And, to be honest, their Black Label knockoff of Dior Sauvage....smells more natural and better than Sauvage. That's just my opinion though.
    Once you look at their site your will be immersed in a pretty big world of scents and products. There is a discontinued scent called "Vetiver Planet" that had real vetiver grass in the bottle. Their final batch was STUNNING! It smelled like a smokey, grassy vetiver that blew me away. I've been emailing and begging them to bring that back for at least a limited run so I can buy a bunch of bottles so I never run out.
    Thanks again Dave for this great video! Oh, and the Gold Label Royal Mayfair homage is DEAD ON and smells like a 3-year old bottle of Royal Mayfair where that eucalyptus is less medicinal and more smooth. It's a very, very, very well done duplication. I use the Gold label bath and shave products with my bottle of Royal Mayfair. And if you think I'm just some guy who doesn't have a clue about things, just understand, my bottle of Royal Mayfair is signed by Erwin Creed. I put Gold Label products with a signed bottle of Royal Mayfair. So, if it didn't knock my socks off, I wouldn't use it.

    As much as I wanted to love all his stuff, it’s pretty hit or miss. Excellent marketing and packaging. Some are amazing and many are just bad. I can say that having sampled every one of the scents that isn’t a special release. Clubguy is great, Fresco is great, the Aramis clone is nice even though it smells almost nothing like Aramis (I own multiple vintage bottles). Most of the vintage clones are legit. I just get tired of hearing I smell like an old man. I blind bought the Creasote aftershave, it’s awful. Just foul smelling. The frostbyte AS is really nice too. So he has a few winners. I threw about 25 sample vials in the trash though. That immortal peach smells EXACTLY like the glade plug in peach. The ASs are the star of his line though. And I suspect many of the scents were formulated for use in soaps. Many of them just smell like they should be a soap. And speaking of soaps, his shave soaps are my least favorites in my collection. He uses a bunch of seed butters and very processed ingredients. They leave a nasty scummy film on my face. Some might like that as it may feel like your skin is smooth and moisturized but to me it feels like cheap lotion after it dries on your skin.

    Actually I’m disappointed. I don’t like squatch because it washes away so quick. But the scents on PAA are nasty they smell old. I’ve tried a great deal because I wanted to an aftershave along with soap and I’m not super picky so I got a few soaps and 7 after shave samples and of the samples only one I thought was ok and that was Classico bay rum. All other to me had an old funk about them. You may like them but for some reason I was getting nauseous with my future fiction soap and the good vibrations boardwalk barbershop. Boomtown bay rum was bay rum but the gunpowder smell was quite strong. So you smell like smoke or as if you played with cap guns. It wasn’t good. The only thing I was satisfied with was the dopleganger black which was an homage to dior savage but just smells good. Kinda close. Scents matter a lot. But the quality of the bars is great other than the scents they last a long time they lather well and feels good on my skin and doesn’t dry me out. I wish they had a newer fresh smell.

      I have been a person who has used Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements products since 2017 when I bought Sangre de Drago as my first scent from them. And that is some spectacular sauce. The Phoenix website has samples for $1 you can buy and if you buy a bulk order of as many scents as you're interested in it will off-set the shipping. Then just get each sample, pull up the the PAA website page of the product and read the scent notes while you smell the sample. Dab some on paper. I think you'll find some of these to be really good even if you're skeptical and try to nitpick them. Many of these scents are just done well. Even ones that weren't my personal cup of tea still got some of my respect because I could tell the quality's good.
      So, I'm glad Fragrance Bros did this video. PAA has been worthy of being talked about in fragrance circles for years now and it just seems like they've been forced into a box as a wet-shaving company when their scents are some of the most "out-there" and creative adventures I've smelled. They are the best in wet-shaving in my opinion.
      Today I wore another PAA, the unusual Petrichor scent names La Tierra Mojada. It's like something I would expect as a 'niche' from some obscure and expensive house. What makes it surprising is that at first smell I didn't know what to make of it and recoiled a bit. Then after really taking it in it's like a sour-wet-metallic-earth smell. Like an overgrown abandoned industrial site that is being rained on. To me it's addicting to smell. I have really enjoyed it today. It lasts about 6 hours and then goes to a skin scent. As my scent of the evening I'm layering 4711 Remix 225th Anniversary cologne over the top and it's a great evening cross-over layering.
      So, I dare you to go to their site, read up on some of their fragrances and the notes, then order 15-20 off the site and give them a go. The samples are not EDP, they are the aftershave/cologne (most of those last hours, but some don't, but bear in mind they have EDP's for most of the scents they carry).
