    When he is going up the stairs as Arthur he is struggling. Coming down the stairs as Joker he is alive.

      Im glad im not the only one that caught that!
      I would also say the path to conformity and acceptance is a climb
      However insanity is always a descent
      The imagery is staggering+

    • @glennwelsh9784
      @glennwelsh9784 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I caught that symbolism as well. The staircase is his struggle with life. We see Arthur going up this long, steep set of stair that must be difficult to climb. But when we see him as Joker, he's not just going down those stairs, he's dancing down them. Life is much easier and enjoyable for him when he becomes Joker. He's no longer struggling. He's free.

    I can not understand why so many reactors do not understand that he is probably helping his mother because she is not well in some way. That is not weird, I would hope most people would do this for their aging parents I know I would.

    • @TheSporkyDonkey
      @TheSporkyDonkey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +138

      Yeah, i'm pretty surprised that none can see that she's probably got Alzheimer's or something. What is amazing about these scenes, is you can see the under layer of him cracking. Especially in the bath scene, the way he throws the water in her face, he's palming it off as a game, but there's some definite mania involved in that scene. I would say that we are going to see that there is some residual resentment towards his mother that is leading to his depression as well.

    • @glennwelsh9784
      @glennwelsh9784 5 ปีที่แล้ว +125

      That's what I took from it. He's probably a lonely guy who has to take care of his sick mother. She's one of the few connections to humanity he has. And he spends so much time doing that, he has to settle for crap jobs like twirling signs on the dirty, dangerous Gotham streets, and has a hard time even going on a date.

    • @gurangnagamer8194
      @gurangnagamer8194 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Not all have gone to the same "no choice" scenario as some like this Arthur. Not enough money to get help for her ailing mother and him trying his best to put a smile to her mother's face while outside around him is trying to tear him apart just for fun.

    I thought that the shot of him in the elevator was particularly interesting. to me, i kind of thought it was the duality his mind. he, himself, is trying to keep his feelings contained, but the patient that's thrashing around and losing it is his internal mindset. the other two men, to me, represent the fact that no one's doing anything in spite of another person's obvious pain. maybe i'm just reading too much into it XD... anyway, i love your videos, Grace!!

    • @pkop4

    I think this joker will be as good as Ledger's just with a different view. In The Dark Knight he was portrayed more as this mysterious insane genius in the best way, but this version seems so heartbreakingly human (it also kind of reminds me of Birdman, which is great), and it will probably help the way mental illness is seen. Loved it.

    • @claremiller9979
      @claremiller9979 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I like the comparison to Birdman, that descent into madness fueled by an off-balance person being unable to function properly in the world around them I think this will have a much sadder ending though!

    • @dangiambrone7350
      @dangiambrone7350 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Kirch, you sound like you're describing Jack Nicholson's Joker, and not Heath's. If you don't consider Ledger's Joker a genius, then you have missed a large portion of the film. His foresight and planning are demonstrated from the off with the bank job scene,the way that he manipulates and uses the mob bosses, and then amplified by the chain of events that he created that eventually led to his 'capture' by Gordon, his one-on-one with Batman, and then his subsequent escape. Everything was planned by him. This thread was so good that the producers of the Bond film, Skyfall, copied it for Bardem's villain. One of the great things about the ending of TDK is that Batman thinks that he has won because the people on the ferries didn't blow each other up, but once again the Joker was way ahead of him because that was a secondary objective for him, his main one was taking down and corrupting the 'white knight', Harvey Dent.

Sure, he might loose his humanity/sanity along the way but at least he can smile about it.

    There's so many scenes that could make for potential tearjerker moments because of how amazingly relatable Arthur's life is. How many people do you know that just beaten by life every day? Friends? Parents? Random people you walk by every day? Of course he dances down the steps during his descent into madness. It's the "escape exit" we all occasionally fantasize about taking, but don't.

    DC needs to take this film as it's the benchmark and apply this darker and distinctive style to their films from here on out. This feels like the caliber of film that DC could and should have been making all along. DCcomics and characters and character origin storylines have always been darker, tragic and far more complex in nature than Marvel comics and characters.
    So I really hope that the studio keeps going down this kind of darker, twisted and more mature path when it comes to storytelling because that's what will set it apart from Marvel's lighter, brighter and more ensemble-based films.
    This is honestly the first time I have genuinely looked forward to seeing a DC film in the cinema since the trailer came out for Nolan's 'The Dark Knight' and I hope that continues for future DC film projects.

    Y'know when I was a boy a friend of mine's father told me "Be happy you have no father. son because if you did you would love him too much and the world would take that as incest or obsessive control. Whatever is in their sick little minds will come out. Because the only thing the average person loves more than themselves is some one who is selfish, but appears menially altruistic, just enough to be called "nice" but not too much to be called "great ". that son would be a challenge and challenges have become obsolete nowadays."
    This is not intended as an insult, but character or not perhaps you should give a little more respect to a man willing to sacrifice himself for his mother. Without trying to conjecture about imaginary themes of incest that are not there.
