      bone marrow donation can be very dangerous. if the bone marrow isn’t a 100% match with the donor and recipient, the donor has the chance of getting graft vs host disease, where the bone marrow is rejected and it’s very painful and it can be deadly.

    • @briinahkriid
      @briinahkriid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@hannahbailey6424 That's not true, the only risk of complications for the donors are related to the anesthesia or damage to nerves and bones, there is no risk of a donor getting graft vs host disease (because he's not the one on the receiving end). It is indeed a risk for the receiver of the marrow, though. (Source: bethematch.org/support-the-cause/donate-bone-marrow/donation-faqs/)

    • @nowandaround312

      @@Chanhee Donors are carefully selected to make sure they're low risk. I wanted to add myself to the donor registry but I didn't qualify because of a medical condition I have. In addition, many bone marrow transplants only require the donation of blood. They're not dangerous at all for the donor. The type that require drilling into bone are only risky for people with certain medical conditions, who are excluded from donating, and people at high risk of anesthesia complications are also excluded. The recipient can get graft vs host disease, but careful testing is done to reduce the chance of that happening.

    Hey my name is Amos O’Neill & I’m 23 yrs old now. I was diagnosed with the same disorder and know exactly what that little girl is going through because that was me. The doctors said I wasn’t going to live past the age of 13 yrs old (obvs I’ve proven them wrong being 23 now). I stopped having blood transfusions around the age of 16/17 and I haven’t taken any steroid medication for at least 7/8 yrs. I am very fortunate and blessed to have overcome something that felt impossible.

All my cells don't work properly because I have Mitochondrial Disease on top of the blood disorder and other conditions. Honestly the blood disorder sometimes is the easiest one to deal with because threes at least an actual treatment for it unlike my other diseases.

      Come on guys , blood transfusions once a month isn't such a big deal and the steroid treatment is temporary. She seems like a happy little girl who enjoys life despite her challenges. Saying her life is not worth living is simply disgusting. However I agree that from an evolutionary standpoint she's clearly got a massive disadvantage. But as humans we are past that point. Most of us would've actually died at birth or live an unhealthy lifestyle that would make us unfit for survival , so most people would've to be weeded out if you really think that way.

      Exactly. I give blood whenever I can. Quite convieniatly the local blood donation service turns up at my university every couple of months or so so if I can I give blood then. And the trick with giving blood (or having a blood test too) is to make sure you have had plenty of fluids. This makes the blood vessels easier to find and get blood from.

      Never regret donating blood, you never know who's life, you will save literally blood donation saves lives throughout the world. It can be packed & stored in many various ways and just overcoming your fear is something you will feel good about.
      I never thought donating blood was that important, I thought there were thousands of people until I donated once. You know, there are many different blood types and all of a sudden they kept calling me every week, and I would go every month when the blood mobile showed up. Finally, one day, I was exasperated, because they kept calling, and I didn't have a problem going, but why were they so worried, pressuring, hopeful I was donating? I had survived leukemia, I had it for 10 years, untreatable, incurable. I was lucky a geneticist saved my life, and I went into remission miraculously as a matter of fact, my oncologist thought I had gone to another country and got a cure. After that, I started donating. I asked them why they were asking me so often, and I found out that my blood is only 2% of the population! Think about that, I also found out that was why I couldn't have children by my husband, because he didn't have the same blood type as I did, because mine was so rare. I wish I had known that 30 years before, I would have tried to find somebody but war has shrank my blood type. So they were so excited to find someone else in the local area that had this blood type, which is very uncommon where I live in Southern California.
      Sadly, I'm not allowed to donate anymore, as the new director have them interview, as for any medical problems. And I said, well, I'm a leukemia survivor, and that's why I donate. The new director went ballistic, it's not that they thought I would give them leukemia in my blood, they were terrified, they would give me the key me by removing my blood. It breaks my heart that I can not donate to help others who have my rare blood type. The people I admire are the ones who have the universal blood, because they can give for everybody. Can you imagine that a person's blood can literally save someone else's life. What a wonderous design, the body is.

      Actually there is a rare genetic condition where people need fresh hemoglobin which is the red protein inside of red blood cells and they are also allergic to sunlight and can only go out at night. There was a story I saw about some little girls with this condition. I think conditions like these are what started the Vampire stories. There might even have been a virus or bacteria at some point in history that could cause this kind of condition that could be spread among people also. Vampirism nowadays is better understood and medically treated just like any medical condition.

    As long as her type is negative I could donate. I'm O- it's a universal blood type that is compatible with all the other - types. So by default O+ types can donate to all + types. Which is why when I'm 18 I'll be donating blood

    We can also used the liquid part of the blood - plasma, etc. Plasma, cryo, and platelets are the liquid part of the blood. The last 2 weekends I've worked, I've needed Blood, Plasma, cryo, and platelets - with all these components, the nurse and doctors were able to SAVE THE PATIENTS LIFE!!
    Thank You for Donating!!

      It's neat to see your own rare disease represented in media. There are extremely few examples of my primary disability (full body CRPS type II) in the media. Actually, I don't know if I've ever seen a type II-er on tv before. I think everyone I've seen (all 2 or 3, lol) had type I. Which would make more sense- it's 10 times more common than type II (though it's still rare, happening to only 1 in 5,000 people- type II is 1 in 50,000).

Listen I do not know if there are gods and I do not know if life has a meaning but please try to think without influence from others. I was raised with some christian influence but I do not think that there is a caring god. Maybe there is and it just created life for the sake of creating life without caring for it. maybe it's goals are beyond our understanding but I do not think it tries to test us with such horrid tests.

      It’s a different condition to thalassaemia but it may resemble diamond blackfan anaemia if it’s a very severe form of thalassaemia in a young infant. People with diamond blackfan are incapable of making new red blood cells so after their maternal red blood cells are used up they require monthly transfusions, unless they are able to successfully receive a bone marrow transfusion. People with thalassaemia can make their own blood cells but make an abnormal form of haemoglobin. The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells by the body which causes the anaemia. So they are treated the same way, if the thalassaemia is severe but they are two separate conditions.

      Ketty Brwn I agree with Fiona. This is not the same as Thalassemia. I'm a Thalassemia carrier myself and I researched a lot about Thalassemia for my offsprings' wellbeing, so I know quite a lot about it :/
      My family has always been a blood type O family for generation, and at least 7 people in my family that I know of is type O Rh negative. We live in Indonesia and has been on the fixed donor list of blood type O Rh +/-, and some of us also enlisted in the Rh - blood donor community. If you're ever in the area and in need of donor, you can ring me a bell. Best of luck dear. I will be praying for the best

      Fiona -Jane Kelly Yes they are two different conditions but they are rather similar. People with beta thalassemia major or Cooley’s anemia do not produce normal blood cells, thus they are incapable of carrying out the function properly. This can lead to severe complications as the cells are destroyed much faster causing the iron from the cells to deposit on the liver and heart damaging it. BTM (Beta Thalassemia Major) patients seem healthy when they are born but as they grow their bodies are unable to produce enough cells, causing severe anemia this can be fatal if the patient does not receive a blood transfusion. I got my first transfusion at 4 months old and have been transfusion dependent ever since. I take at least two transfusions a month and I’m now 24 years old. The only known cure is a bone marrow transplant. In addition, we have to take injections to remove all the excess iron that comes from the transfused blood from our bodies. Patients have to constantly monitor their iron levels to make sure the heart and liver don’t go in to failure. Very similar to the condition this little girl has.

    People are right chickens who dont donate their blood. 3 times a year is all it takes. I am an O- donor that means I am a universal donor and my blood can go into anybody no matter their blood type. Every time I donate a very special sticker is placed on my bag of blood that lets medical staff know that it is suitable for children. Believe me I wouldn't donate if it was in anyway painful or unpleasant (well I would) but for people out there that have this horror feeling when the think about donating. Not too bad at all. I actually find it quite relaxing., Anyone out there that is O- and doesnt donate you are crazy. Just do it!! Very brave little girl and I would be utterly proud if my blood ever went to you sweetheart!!

I hadn’t even thought of it being used to treat illnesses like this- more along the lines of helping people who had lost too much blood in an accident or surgery. You do realise that with periods 90% of what comes out isn't blood, it's just the lining of the uterus which takes some blood with it because blood vessels rip when it comes loose. Saying periods are a problem is like saying: "what if she gets a papercut?"

      That's because of incest in Pakistan unfortunately. You see, there are some areas in the middle east where marriage of cousins is completely normal.
      The reason why you shouldn't marry within your family is because there's more chance that genetic diseases will appear because both parents will carry similar ''wrong'' genes when they are family. It's okay to have some genetic ''mistakes'' in your DNA-code but incest causes a lot of repeated genetic ''mistakes'' that lead to rare diseases or disability. So if you want to have a smaller chance of getting children with anemia and other disorders, marry someone from another country/city.

    • @c.morganfree1970
      @c.morganfree1970 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @L5940
      @L5940 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Nilu Abdurakhmanova It's not ''mean'' if it's just an observed truth. It's important that the Pakistani people know that there are options to prevent these kinds of diseases, just by not marrying within the extended family. It's not like I'm saying all Pakistani people marry their cousins but there are *some* people there who do. And those people create genetic problems for their offspring.
