    This camera had me pretty excited when it released since I love my sigma 18-35, but my current EOS M6 Mark II setup still serves me pretty well while still being more compact so my excitement also cooled a bit. It is rather unfortunate that Canon decided not to make the 1080p better though. The 4k is downsampled which is great but would have liked to see 1080p be downsampled too! Good 1080p is still worthwhile and useful imo.

    I upgraded from the 90D to the R7 and am really happy with my choice. There are for sure interesting alternatives, especially when the FX30 came out I was checking that out too. But somehow I like and can work better with Canon and had anyways couple of ef-s lenses which i use on the R7. For TH-cam its perfect, I do reviews, interviews and boutique presentations (all hobby though) but so far its great and keeps up with the task. Do 95% Video, sometimes foto. Great review Caleb, it was a great review, happy to see my feelings about the R7 confirmed.

  • @coppensbram
    @coppensbram 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Totally agree! 👍 Loving my R7 for video work (TH-cam, client work and family stuff). And set up for the future with all RF lenses when I finally go full frame. And indeed, the Sigma 18-35 is fantastic with this camera! 😊

  • @TheTechnoPilot
    @TheTechnoPilot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    ...and then Sony dropped the FX30.
    To be clear, this is a very solid TH-cam camera, but if you are in the $1500-$1800 price point and focused almost exclusively on video, the FX30 will grow with you FAR more. This is especially true with the ability to upgrade to four channels of audio with two phantom powered XLRs and a 3.5mm jack with plug-in power. Also just by buying higher end CFExpress A cards, you can shoot super high bitrate internal with the codecs required by broadcasters. Add a Ninja V and you can shoot ProResRAW. In terms of a camera to grow with at the lower price point, the FX30 is definitely the camera to pick right now.

    Another amazing feature is Canon’s EF to RF adapter with a variable ND filter built in. With that and the Sigma 18-35, or any Canon ef/ef-s lens, it essentially gives this camera an internal variable ND filter which is amazing.

    Funny thing: This is actually also a great wildlife photography camera. I will get the R7 as a backup camera for my next wildlife trip next year, and just found out how great it also performs as a video camera as I like to shoot interviews with two cameras. As my main camera - the R5 - is able to shoot clog3, this should make combing video material from both cameras quite easy. Also, with the Sigma RF 1.4 trio coming out, this should give people even more options of shooting great pictures and videos.

    The video of the R7 in the studio looks extremely noisy, it's very obvious in the colored emtpy walls, very distracting.

    I hate that cannon banned third party lens. i was really looking foward to getting an cannon r7 with it being able to shoot 4k/60p 10 bit and upgrading from a z50 for video and pairing with viltrox or sigma rf lens but i guess i got look into the Sony A7 IV or nikon z6 IIi . I dont see myself paying 1800$ for a cam body and than having to buy a 1500$ lens . The truth is a lot of these third-party lens performs the same if not better than the canon lens but for 1/3 of the price. really greedy move by cannon banning third- party lens 😥

      🙏💐 It's true....
      Canon had made monopoly due to it's greedy marketing strategy to banned third party lenses. In last month I'd seen many had moved from purchasing canon to Sony. As Sony had still kept open it's lens mount option for third party.

    Check out fv mode. I control all of my main settings with the front dial and rear wheel without having to look up from the viewfinder. You can set it up as manual, aperture priority, shutter priority, or any combination with FV mode using only the front dial and rear wheel. Having that rear wheel up is better than down when you're using it this way. With my A7iv I have to reach down but on the R7 the wheels right under my thumb.

  • @kellenholt6655
    @kellenholt6655 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I agree that it’s a great body, but saying there are a ton of lens options available is a bit of a miss with this review. Yes canon has *some* affordable RF options, but they don’t perform as well as other first party options from their competitors and the lack of third party RF options make them fall way behind the competition.
    I absolutely love canon bodies, love the ergonomics, love the feel and love the colors most of all, but the lack of RF lens options steered me to an A7IV over an R6 and would steer me away from this body if I was looking to buy something at this price point.
    Honestly I struggle to understand Canon’s stance on this issue as lensing is really the only thing holding them back from really owning multiple market segments at this point.

    • @robertwlittlejohn
      @robertwlittlejohn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Med, I have both cameras, having bought the R7 recently and having had the S5 for some time. Here in Australia the S5 sometimes get as low in price as the R7 retail, but the R7 was on 15% discount for some time so still cheaper here. I bought the R7 to fill a few gaps in the capabilities of the S5. The S5 really is an amazing camera that has many Video and Photo assist features...you can get cinema quality video the equal of many of the more video dedicated cameras available..and photos of amazing quality too... this will be harder with the R7...but when you need autofocus where subjects are moving towards or away from the camera a lot..or there are a lot of multiples subjects moving around..or any quick autofocus adjustment the R7 is just more reliable. If i'm doing time lapse...long exposure...astro...portrait...low light...or want a real "movie" feel i'll be using the S5...if i'm taking action photos or video...definitely the R7 as long as it's not dark. Note if you have a lot of existing EF mount glass (which many video people do) and want to use an adaptor...then the Sigma EF glass works OK on the S5...Canon EF glass not very well but it's ok for photos but super slow. Canon EF glass works pretty good adapted on the R7...Sigma EF ok. If you want to get serious about video though, you really have to start to learn manual focus anyway.

The primes you mentioned sure, but there are no quality affordable rf-s zooms. If you shoot live events, you need them. I refuse to pay the premium for FF glass when I don't own full frame or want it. All you mention is correct, but it depends on what and how you shoot. Image quality is amazing. The video is excellent as always, Caleb! It looks like a great camera indeed. Would you recommend it for run-and-gun style shooting? Mostly in regards to IBIS and rolling shutter.

    I bought an R7 and sent it back. It felt cheap and just way too small for my hands. I bought an R6, instead and it fits my needs well.

    It's too bad the video is littered with strange artifacts. Maybe the compression was lower than it normally is? Any clarity as to why were are seeing fixed block noise in a lot of the footage and mysterious white dots on some of the shots could be nice. Also I would love to know why you are over exposing Clog3, is that so you can bury the noise in the shadows? If so it seems to not be working all too well.

      @@avdcam why reupload? A couple white spots won't change anything about the narrative of this video. There's really no benefit to Caleb reshooting everything. Stuff like this happens, doesn't matter that much.

    • @avdcam
      @avdcam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@futc.photography I just assumed the in camera recording might be clean and therefore worth a quick file swap. Obviously remaking the entire video because of a cable issue isn't worth it, The white spots are not a big deal, it's more the brutal noise that is a serious counter to the real quality possible in the camera and, in some ways, contradicts Caleb's overall point of view. For a casual viewer, Caleb loves the camera, but doesn't mention the obvious noise in the footage. Just seems strange, especially in a camera review.

    Looks like a sensor issue with your talking head camera - multiple random "dead pixels" in your talking head shot - not YT compression.
    Super noisy vision and crazy banding in BGs. The banding's likely the YT compression on those fine light grad BGs Caleb sets up in his BGs. Are the rushes quite noisy Caleb? Seems to struggle to resolve any super fine gradients of colour most notably in BGs (more than just from the YT compression). Does it look this way before or after LUT/s is / are applied? Does is look this way with just a custom grade and no LUT?

    Seriously considering this over the fx30. Just seems like a better option more since I have a handful of ef lenses already for my Black Magic cameras. I could use something with AF Does the canon adapter allow AF to still work with non canon EF lenses like sigma and tamron?

      As a lifelong Canon user I strongly reccomend Sony or Nikon because of the third party lens situation. You don't want to be in my situation where you can't get the lenses you want without them being massive DSLR lenses adapted.

    If an R6 Mk ii shows up, it would be nice to see if it is cooler running for video than its predecessor. It sounds like the R7 is, but the R6 Mk ii might still run hotter than the R7. If you can check heat by radiation that would be nice. Also battery life is a pretty good indicator of power efficiency.

    I feel like Canon has had the ability to make such a great camera in the price point for a long time, but have always limited this price point to up-sell people to more expensive camera. At this price point, there's so many incredible devices being released by Sony especially with the FX30 now), Fujifillm, and Panasonic, that they could no longer keep releasing camera's such as the RP or M series camera. They can't continue to keep losing market share, they gotta get people invested in RF Glass somehow.
