@@dslrvideoshooter caleb, you forgot to change the download link on your website for the sm7b. it only gives the v1, not the v2!! can you tell me when you fix this cause i have to wait until then to print it off
One of my favorite TH-camrs. I follow many, but few I would want to hang with IRL. Thx for all your great content and the joy you spread. I'm truly inspired.
Agreed on all fronts. Already ordered the top-handle, and now just waiting for the next round of pre-orders for the cineback base kit. So stoked on everything you're creating these days.
The Mac Studio (M1 Ultra) changed the game for me regarding efficiency. There’s no way I could have done as much work as I did in 2023 without it. Great list!
Agree - my machine is a best and makes edits so fast (with Final Cut Pro) - its so good that I really don't feel any need to upgrade after 2years - but probably will in the next year or so just to keep on the optimal resale / new gear purchase / minimise depreciation path.
If you see any book or video or article with Thomas Sowell's name on it, it's amazing. Full stop. One of the brightest minds of at least the last 100 years. The guy is a true gift to humanity.
great video ! I really love this new format, you seem a lot more relaxed and laid back ! I do need to add that, regarding economics, as a DP/finance guy, just like in video production, macro stuff is way more easy to understand than micro stuff😂😂
The Nitze is one of the best top handles in its size range. I've acquired most on the market in recent years, and they usually end up on a tripod rig or in my parts-is-parts drawer.
Thanks man! Yes I should add food!!! I’ll probably never bring in CNC machining due to expense and expertise needed and I don’t want to scale too fast. Maybe someday though!
My Smallrig Vmount personal experience/// I had a shoot outside in winter all day (30 degrees F) , and used 3 CoreSWX vmounts and 1 Smallrig. The Cores lasted hours and the smallrig only lasted 1/3rd that. So just a heads up for anyone looking to purchase, may not be suitable in colder conditions.
My favorite is for those traveling and want to backup or move files from one SD card to another WITHOUT using a laptop. With the PGYTECH CreateMate Card Reader I'm able to plug this into my Pixel 7 Pro and use File Manager+ to copy/move files from one card to another (it has two slots and android recognizes them as two usb drives). I use it to off load files from my expensive main V90 SD card to far less expensive microSD cards. Transfer rates are around 40MB/sec.
I also just started using Keyboard Maestro and Karabiner Elements and I'm loving it! These tools bring so much more functionality to the Mac. If you're using an external mouse, I'd also recommend SteerMouse or BetterMouse to be able to remap the buttons to custom functions. Also are you still editing in Final Cut Pro?
Releasing a cage for the lumix s5 series from s5 to the s5iix would be a game changer. More and more filmmakers are getting into lumix because of the price and image quality. I know I would buy
I think last year's top purchases were a cheap 80w video light from Raleno + a small softbox and a cheap c stand. I love that I can just roll the light around and position it in any way I can think of. It makes filming in my office so much more flexible. And after switching the internal fan to something more quiet, it is no longer audible. My top purchase for this year better be the Sony 70-200 G2 because that thing cost me an arm and a leg. I get a lot of use for product shots out of it, so I think it will be worth it. I also got a used MacBook Pro M1 Pro which I love.
Caleb, I would love to hear more about the LTO! I've been looking at using LTO but unlike you I can't justify the drive cost yet! What drive did you go with? New or used? Did you do LTO 7, 8, or 9? Thanks and love the videos!
He mentioned 12TB per tape, so that's LTO8. LTO versions are generational, so LTO7 is becoming less as LTO8 becomes more common. LTO9 is still not very widely used. From the picture it looks like a MagStor desktop unit that he's using.
I love these lists, because as a full time video creator myself, I always wonder how much overlap I will have with other creators. The biggest surprise for me this year is how much I absolutely love the fx30. Incredibly cheap for everything you get, and tbh, you could get away with shooting the majority of work on that cheap camera and most people would never know. Also, for a prosumer mic, the wireless pros are replacing some of my “pro” gear due to its ease of use and feature set.
The Nitze is the best handle I've used also. The only negative with the original one ( like you have I think) is that it's very heavy. They just released a new version which weighs considerably less.
Defo tempted by that 18-50 seeing as I recently bought the FX30 as a b cam to my FX3. Actually bought the full set of 7Artisans Vision cine lenses after watching your video on them, shot a music festival on them and was super impressed
interesting and very informative. Quick question. For 5,5k alone for the LTO drive, it doesn't honestly seem like a good investment. You can get a great raid system for half that value. Why would you recommend this option of LTO vs. Raid ? i understand the tapes are extremely cheap, but 5,5k initial investment seems to not make it so worthwhile. cheers
It depends on what kind of data totals you're dealing with. $5.5k will buy you a 126TB RAID, but for redundancy you need at least two. So now you're looking at 2x ~50TB RAIDs for 5.5k. With LTO, once you've paid your initial $5.5k, archiving 50TB of data in two places is about $1500 for tape stock. So really, once you want to store more than about 60TB of data, it makes financial sense to look at LTO. Another aspect to think of is longevity. A RAID's rated lifespan sitting on a shelf is about 5 years, wheras with LTO it's nearer 50 years. Tapes are also imutable, so effectively ransomware-proof.
Wow, glad to see you're "back". I was afraid after one of the prior videos you were "quitting TH-cam" like "everyone else". As always, truly excellent content and reviews.
Love your new path going forward. You do you Caleb. I've been following LTO tape for a while but still not made the jump forward in purchasing the LTO deck. One day.
LTO tapes! I can hear the sound of the drive running! As expensive as those drives are, the cost of reliably storing that much data really can't be beat.
You should make a cineback for the GH6 as well ;-) Something with a similar handle as the Sony so we can mount the audio break out box more to the front. I believe there was an extension cable with hotshoe available. That way we don't need to mount a monitor on top of the audio break out but can mount it behind to make it more compact.
Who doesn't love a good caster?! Have the FX30 and FX3 but would have been happy with two FX30. I somewhat of a lens snow (definitely a Mic snob) I'm semi-retired and still keep wanting the new Sony Primes (ZEISS Nano Prime 6-Lens Set) and anything from Thomas Sowell is outstanding, ran sound for an event he was speaking at years ago very nice man! FYI - I heard several people not liking the 'Pro' Small Rig battery (everyone loves the original) - I have access to a LTO deck without having to buy one!!! Oh, and I have the Tilta NII
still loving the content, as a guide purchaser, discord member etc. I love what you do. BTW, Does the cineback fully support USB-C PD? I think that was my only hang-up when it released. Either way I am waiting for the top handle mod version. Looks dope.
Great list, I love my thread finder. I wanted a cineback but the audio top handle kit addition priced me out. Maybe the price will come down in the future or I can add it to my budget this year. I do like your version vs the Korean or where ever its from ridgid knock off. I'm getting more and more into home automation as well. There's a lot of neat stuff you can do with Google home and Alexa devices.
Hey, I love you content. I was just looking at your nikon z6 video and you had said back then that you were going to be making videos about it but I couldn’t find any. Do you still plan on making some for it? I have a Z30 and am planning and buying it at a next upgrade.
been watchin your channel for a good bit, great stuff! . .but you just shot to one of my atf's with the beautiful braking caster mods section : ) where can i find some of those, with the pretty red wheels?
Yeah LTO drive is no brainer for backing up video. I still got space on my NAS, but some day I would have to buy it :D Got experience with LTO from 1st gen :D
After years and years this channel is still the gold standard. If those cinebacks are ever actually available again, I need to get one for my FX3 :)
So true. soooo true
Thanks so much Benj! New batch every month!

Your cinebacks are so underrated!!! I don't have a FX30 yet but the cineback makes me want to get it ASAP!
Perfect. Your involvement in all this stuff causes you to almost step off the screen and into the room. It's great to see you back at 110%.
There we go! extension handle.
Picked up the fx30 and a set of Sigma lenses and couldn’t agree more. Such a badass camera! Really appreciate your reviews Caleb!
Your Cineback makes me want an FX3 or FX30. Such a great design, and now with the top handle extension!
Thanks Tanner!

I use the FX30 and the same sigma lens too. Good to hear confirmation on the combination. It has been working well for me too
