I love your style of skirt. I have made several from your pattern and wear them riding and training my horses. I use elastic in the waist band and wear leggings underneath (just in case something were to happen and I come off and the skirt gets hung up on the saddle or something). I absolutely love wearing skirts in everyday life and, like you said and contrary to popular belief, they aren't hard or inconvenient to wear.

Yes, leggings or shorts underneath is a must!! I have had those "whoops" moments! They are definitely not hard nor inconvenient. Sometimes I get hung up on something around the homestead with a skirt, a bit more than if I wore pants, but patches and creative stitching around tears just adds unique embellishments. 😂😂

I love wearing skirts because they make me feel feminine not to mention just how comfortable they are. The thing that surprises me the most is how many compliments I’ve received. I’ve even been thanked by an older gentleman in the grocery store for dressing modestly. I don’t think we realize just how much our apparel (and the way we wear it) impacts others around us. I'm feeling the same way in my mature years. I find myself hanging about the house in my nightgown not because I'm too lazy to dress but simply because it's more comfortable than jeans. So I've been thinking about making skirts and/or dresses for everyday. I have some old jeans that are mostly comfortable but the newer styles are so tight and not really flattering to the mature and chubby figure.
If you wish to make a skirt as shown in the video, try to make the first tier long enough to go past the hip area. That is to avoid the bulk that make the fluffier of us appear larger than life. Also make the first tier as hip skimming (not tight; just barely gathered for comfort) as possible and leave the most gathering for other tiers. I have sat and thought about this as you can tell.

Another point in order to have a more flattering tummy area you could also do an opening on both sides that can be overlapped and snapped in the front. If you do the overlap going towards the back you could add some nice deep pockets on both sides! My creative wheels are turning!! I love the more feminine look of the gathered skirt while less full at the top. I’m heading out to check out some nice dark sheets!! Kinda exciting!

@@mariecraig239 That is a great idea, too. I also thought of putting in pleats in line with the knee. I've had that on skirts before and it's quite flattering to many figures because pleats lie much closer to the body than gathers. Plus it saves working out the ruffling at the waistline.

As an adult I was a Civil War reenactor and had a historic clothing business so was in full gear--chemise, drawers, corset petticoars, cage crinoline and outer dress, quite often. I homestead now at 60. All through the years when not wearing reenacting clothing I have always worn long, prarie skirts, dirndl skirts or full a-line skirts. Only in cold weather do I bother wearing something underneath my skirt or jumper. I have bought black long underwear in a larger size. They look a lot like leggings but aren't skin tight. They are cotton and very comfortable. Looks just like leggings if something is revealed.

As a primary/elementary school teacher for children diagnosed with behavioral and emotional disabilities, I found slightly above-ankle-length long shirts or dresses were ideal. No butt-crack reveals, no gymnastically contorted squats required of mini-skirts (which, as a child of the 60s, I had once adored), and no chilly legs. I could squat/sit comfortably on the floor in any position. Also, I always had ample-sized pockets which were essential. If for any reason I needed a shorter skirt, such as wading in a creek, a few twists and tucks took care of that.

So I followed her. I got a couple pair of shorts and a couple plain t shirts. And for about half the cost. It is horrible that we can’t even find respectful clothes anymore. So I have gone back to making my own.

I'm only 4' 11” and I look better in dresses. I can order Petite dresses from a couple of catalogs but I still have to hem them. My husband wears the pants and I wear dresses. I hot weather I don’t wear half slips unless the dress is slightly thinner but in the winter I wear half slips. When I was working a man I never knew came up to me one day and said, "you always look nice even working in a factory." "I would give anything if my wife ever would wear a skirt or dress sometime and give up blue jeans all the time." I understood what he meant. It’s rare to see women dressed like women.

I'm 4'11" too! I quit growing around 13/14. My problem is my width 😬 I have something wrong with me that makes me very large despite not eating much. Also I have big legs so bottoms never fit my waist if the fit my legs and big arms so in order to get a top to fit my arms, it's huge and the shoulder seam is down my arm and looking sloppy., not even petite stuff fits right. I've recently decided to buy shirts big enough to fit my arms and I'm reducing the width of the shoulder so that the seam is more in line with my shoulder bend. I've done one so far and a HUGE improvement. Haven't figured out what to do with the sleeves yet bc it's plaid so a tricky pattern to work with.

Lately, I find myself wearing mostly dresses with the three or four tier ( the frontier type of skirt) I do prefer dresses because I find it more practical in the hot climate I live year round, although it’s fun to through a sweater or a long sleeve shirt in the evenings if it’s chilling. I love the skirts. I’ve made several already and contemplating a reclaimed wool patch work most recently. Would have loved to have made one before winter, but other projects took priority. I will get to it, though. Used to be everyone wore tunics, but skirts have been the symbol of modern femininity for hundreds of years, now, in many cultures. I don’t wear skirts exclusively, yet, but when I do I can do everything I do in pants and they certainly are more comfortable and likely healthier, too. I haven’t found jeans comfortable for many years. I think it’s the fact that our skin gets thinner as we age and anything too binding is painful, but I doubt it is ever healthy to wear tight clothing. @@Three721 I actually make my own bloomers. The original pattern was for track pants. So, I cut them a bit wider (I make them out of non-stretch cotton) and the length has to be a bit longer than you think so they don't rise up when squatting. Both the waist and below knee bands have elastic. For the knee I measure under my knee and cut the elastic to that length, sewing the ends together is enough to draw them in without squeezing the area. And then I make my skirts long enough to cover them. I would highly encourage you to make your own.

Just found your videos on making the patchwork skirt and decided to watch this one as well. Since I was a pre-teen I have worn only pants and shorts. Long back story to why. I did wear skirts for church and special occasions. But, other than that, only pants and shorts. I'm 51 now and recently felt like I wanted to wear skirts more often. But, all the skirts I have (no dresses at all) are nice, church/special occasion skirts. And with the cost of everything, buying isn't an option unless I can find them at the thrift store. Unfortunately, most of those are too short (below the knees is a must for me). So, I am delving into the world of sewing from thrifted fabric. Why not? I spend most of my time doing house work and yard work. Thanks for this video. And for all those who have commented that they also wear skirts all the time (especially those who are choosing to do so for the sake of aligning themselves with scripture). It has encouraged me to give it a go after being a pants/shorts only gal.

Of course 🧡 I also initially looked online (both for the needles & thread)
1st stop was Joann's. That was where I found the darning set. I utilized their 40% in-app coupon. Set included 3 sizes of needles and a translucent needle container (w/ discount ~$2.75). They did have some sock thread but colors were Ltd so went over to Michaels to look there.
Better selection of Kryon. Their sale was BOGO1/2. So I bought 2. I think those were about $6-$8(?)
(Ps: Michael's coupon policies seemed to have changed over what they used to be)
I did go back to Joann's for an addl. skein of thread & applied coupon as well.
Xtra info- The needles online were ~$6. For me it made sense to get them at J's bc I needed to see what sock weight thread was. I tried many yrs ago to darn socks with cotton weight sewing thread. Found out why sock weight is recommended. When I attempted with "cotton button" thread I tried for 40 min and finally tossed it to the side in frustration. Cotton weight and sock weight are very different
That Kryon thread is awesome - and I love working with it.
Since my last comment I've worked thru 2 more socks. I think I've got 4 left.
Ps: I wash these wool socks on the delicate cycle, turn them inside out (per manufacturer directions) & hang dry them. I treat them like I would a good wool sweater.
Sorry for lengthy msg - but hope it's helpful 🌻

I have many white socks of my husband that I have set aside to darn someday or cut and use as rags. He wears holes all the time where his big toe pokes through. I have a darning egg and sock yarn for knitting socks. I think I have the needles also so I must give it a try!

@@hibiscus-dreams Oh, no apologies needed. I adore the details so I know what to look for. I used to have a darning egg around somewhere leftover from one grandma or another; hope I can find it.
I really like wool socks. With the right wool, they are comfy year round. I've been looking longingly at the couple of sock knitting patterns I have and hunting in my stash for wool to make some. I have some store-bought ragg wool which never seem to wear out but want some in more cheery colors than the hiking socks.

I can't wait to try this. I stopped trying to sew garments many years ago because it is too expensive to buy good material. Thanks for this video and the many ideas.

Hi, Heidi! I just wanted to thank you for your how-to videos you take the time to share with us! I just made a skirt with a sheet- I never would have made this without learning how to 'gather' easily! It worked! I'm going to make some more- I just wanted you to know that I find your videos so inspiring and helpful - thank you!

I applaud you Heidi. I wear skirts all the time too, except when exercising.
It's also easier for me to layer up for warmth with a skirt, and not drive my RLS through the roof, with layers of pants against my legs. I can wear fleece leggings, and then looser fitting sweat pants overtop of those, all under a heavier fabric skirt. Works great!

modesty also has the added benefit in winter because you have that added layer to cut the chill. in summer the more you cover the less skin to get sunburned. I have found most of the clothes I currently wear at thrift stores

I LOVE long-ish, tiered patchwork skirts - especially made with “up-cycled”, beautiful materials which were formerly Indian saris. (These often have a short, built-in modesty skirt.) The coolest ones have drawstrings built-in, for both the waist and also for graceful rushing in the front and/ or sides. Those skirts of yours are ready to be danced in!

I made a skirt from one of your tutorials. It turned out great and certainly keeps me warm. I love it and although there are some things to learn whilst wearing, in other areas it saves me time, like not having to sweep the steps so often ;) , thank you x

This is fascinating & interesting; a subject hardly heard of these days. I too would like to transition more into wearing skirts. However, I would have to learn how to sew. I already have the sewing machine but need to get to it. I had no idea that sheets could be used for clothing - wow! That’s neat & makes sense.

I agree with you. I admire the Navajo skirts the women wear riding etc. I intend making a patchwork one with William Morris design fabric as I’m a volunteer at a National Trust house Standen in Southeast England. The Victorians knew how to dress and could still go climbing, cycle and garden in dresses.

Heidi, I just love the skirts that you made me! Heidi, I have been wearing skirts and dresses for 25 years; and I believe the Lord convicted me to do so. Like you Heidi, this is my conviction as well. I love this color on you as well Heidi! Under my skirts and dresses, I use legging under them or kickers in the summer. ❤ I am hoping someday you will make more skirts as I would love to have another one. Thank you, Heidi, for more good information and ones who don't sew you help us too. I sure enjoy all your videos.

Love this. I wear skirts every day. Love the comfort. Dress them up or dress them down. I did move to the bloomer looking pants rather than a slip last year. I never feel underdressed or overdressed. I make all my skirts.

Hey Mrs Rain, I get a compliment almost every time I wear the skirts I made from your pattern, and that's the only thing I wear. For the first time I met another viewer wearing your pattern and right away I new it was enspired by you. We were so happy to see someone else wear this style skirt in the same town. I smile with joy everytime I think about it. Thanks again
