    Hello, I watched your video 3 hours ago and I just finished my skirt. I want to thank you for making this video, it was so much fun making the skirt. I did mine in the colors light pink, mustard yellow and beige and I love it so much. Making this skirt helped me get out of a massive sewing slump, since I haven't worked with fabric for 2 years (lack of inspiration) and finally I'm back at it again. Thank you so much, the video was amazing! ❤❤❤

    Heidi, I started making your frontier skirts about a month or so ago and now it's all I wear. I love them!!! I've made just below the knee skirts, ankle length skirts, and floor length. After I make my drawstring casing, I make belt loops and wear a leather belt. It looks super great! I buy my sheets at Hudson's Dirt Cheap brand new for about $1.00 a piece. I am having a blast and feel so incredibly blessed! I had very little money and I wanted to dress modestly and feminine but couldn't find any clothes I liked at the store. Way back in the 80s I was a choreographer and I wore a character skirt everywhere. When I saw your design I fell in love with it. It opened up a world of possibilities for me and my family on our homestead. I'm making drawstring pants for the men in my family. Thank you very much for sharing all of this. I feel so incredibly blessed to have found your videos on the treadle machine and frontier skirts. ❤

      Were you a dancer as well? I used to teach Ballet and put big dance performances every year and I made most of the costumes for all my students.
      This comment really blesses me to know that you are not only making but enjoying the skirts. $1 each?! Wow, great deal!

      Heidi! I have wanted so badly to tell you how much you have blessed me! I've been waiting to tell you until I had several made and was doing them successfully. Oh yes! First, I came to your videos because I was given the amazing gift of an almost brand new 1970s Singer treadle machine (a dream come true). I happened upon your first frontier skirt video. Forever, I have been a "folk" kind of dresser - loving folk/historic clothes and modest long skirts but I came from the New Orleans culture where anything goes and that's how we kind of dressed - especially as dancers, you know? I believe my love for the frontier skirts started when I was a dancer and choreographer in New Orleans. I started when I was 16 and so loved it. I also danced with a ballet company as a character dancer and we wore black character skirts, which are actually these frontier skirts you are making in your videos (this would have been around the 1970s and very early 80s.) I wore that skirt out! I loved it! Once I saw your videos, I just knew the Lord had answered a prayer for me because your testimony is much like mine - I was convicted by the Lord through his Word about immodest dance - what I was teaching little girls to do and how I was dressing them and myself, and how I was using my body to entice men. As my relationship with the Lord grew, I was so compelled to change how I dressed. I have been dressing modestly for about 25 years now, but didn't get rid of pants until YOUR VIDEO!!! About 6 weeks ago, I finally decided to attempt your skirts and I wear nothing but those now. I am still a bit in the awkward stage because I have some skirts, but now I need to make blouses. I've seen videos of how to make over men's shirts into pretty folk-like blouses and that will follow the skirts. Your skirts have inspired in me also nightgowns and I also started making my petticoats because of your videos. I have not known one dancer or dance teacher like me who was convicted by the Lord until you. Yes, I also made many, many costumes. I haven't danced in a long time, but I have a multi-media production company with my family and I am in front of audiences all the time. I also have a TH-cam channel - nothing like yours - we're just kind of getting started. My hope with my/your skirts is to inspire other women to modesty in a beautiful way. I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and our culture here is shorts, tights for pants (don't get me started on that), and jeans, sloppy t-shirts, and flip flops - this dress goes everywhere - church and all - even weddings. It started making me just go crazy and I was crying out the Lord over and over and over and asking him for help with this in my spirit. THEN - I saw YOUR videos!!!!!! Now - I even wear your skirts when I perform! No kidding! I perform for about 12,000 students and teachers each year around Mississippi. I get up in the morning and I can't wait to work on my skirts. Now, I'm learning how to wear them in the garden and around fire (we have a homestead for about 30 years now) and in winter (how does one keep warm?) and in the summer (hey - those are really cool in tremendous humidity!). LOL! Yes, YOU, my dear sister in the Lord, have CHANGED my path! I am in a position to influence others and I hope just by my presence in my beautiful frontier skirts, the Lord will do that. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your faithfulness to the Lord for making these videos. I would love to send you some photos so you can see what I've made and what I am wearing - and I TOTALLY LOVE the belt loops I've added because it holds the skirts in place and gives me a finished look for when I am performing and teaching. I'm having to change all my photos for my business and all of that because the Lord used YOU!!!! I will never stop thanking you for your faithfulness!

      The belt loop idea sounds great, I have been thinking of adding pouch type pockets on the sides too for when I am not wearing aprons. I have made a denim skirt for another lady where I put jean pockets I cut from used jeans on the front and back so I might someday make myself a skirt like that too :)

    Such beautiful work Heidi. I work with the elderly and one of my residents was telling me her family was getting her things ready to auction off, she told me about how hard to downsize was for her and how hard it was to part with her sewing machine. So I found out when her auction was being held and sent my husband (I had to work that day) to try and get her machine for myself. I was pleased that he outbid another man for the sewing machine. When I went in to work the next day I told my resident that I have her machine. She was so happy to know that I had it that she cried.
    I would love to start making myself these beautiful skirts, but I'm still afraid that I'll mess it up..lol.

      What a beautiful thing you did. It really breaks their heart when people (family) come in & toss/give away their stuff. It may seem like junk to some but it means everything to them. I really feel like it spiraled my mother in law into a depression after her kids downsized her & went through her stuff & just tossed everything that they felt was not important.

      When I was 14 my mom was teaching me how to cook. I made mashed potatoes with dinner and right at the end I Stuffed them up. I thought to myself “darn it no mashed potatoes with diner” I showed my mom and she said “ get the cutting board, and put a pot back on the stove” I thought because I ruined it that it was over with, but she had me start over.
      So if you try something and it doesn’t work out.. just do it again. You don’t get a free pass because it didn’t work out the first time.

      The skill of any hand work is just a matter of practice, whether you are sewing, crocheting, knitting, etc. No one can really teach you that part because everyone finds their own way. It’s a matter of learning the language terms and some basic tips then jumping in and giving it a try. There is nothing more rewarding than wearing something beautiful you made for yourself, or even better seeing a person you love wearing and enjoying it.

    I love that you are in to wearing skirts too! I started wearing comfortable skirts back in the 80s. I felt more feminine and comfortable. I even lived on a boat out on the moorings where I had to row in and row out! And climb up to the boat from my dingy! But I was fine. I collected skirts from thrift stores. I started wearing loose pants in the last few years even though I mostly wear dresses. But I had to start wearing button down comfortable shirts, mostly flannel because I had to have a radical mastectomy. I love your video on how to make my own tops I saw yesterday. Thank you Heidi. I love that you’re a Christian too

    For starters, I love how you start every video with God is good all the time! My sister actually sent me a link to this video because she was a little confused and, thankfully I was able to help her with what she needed help with. I do hope you won't and don't take it too much to heart when there's a lot of criticism. I myself have just recently started seeing and I know nothing about it. Literally what I'm able to do God has taught me. Others who are more experienced may find the explanation as to why you do what you do a bit tedious, but I appreciate the fact that you have considered those of us who know little to nothing about these things and have taken the time to not only give wonderful instructions on the how to do but also explain the why so that we know as it's helpful to avoiding disastrous mistakes and heartache of feeling like a complete failure. So thank you so much for the wonderful, detailed instructions! God bless you friend!

    God bless you !
    I found this video immediately after the homestead skirt.
    Watching both gave me deep insight into how you make a skirt.
    Tips from this video I found excellent:
    1. Buttonhole.
    2. Elastic for back.
    3. Crochet drawstrings.
    4. Tassles.
    5. Measuring blocks.
    6. Piling blocks.
    7. Counting blocks.
    8. Rectangles for us bigger figures.
    9. 2 blocks per 1 block as tiers are added.
    10. Slight zig-zag when sewing on tiers.
    11. Choosing front before making buttonhole.
    12. How to draw line for buttonhole.
    13. Avoiding using pins.
    One thing I don't understand but will surely find out as I work, is how to make the ruffles.
    Are they gathered or is it tiny pleats?
    Thank you so very much.
    🙏
    (As I plan to make a number of tiered skirts, having found a warehouse shop that has plenty of cotton at low prices..I will have so many offcuts left.
    I was drawn to something called "bubble cheese cloth".
    It is so soft and they have it in many colours (muted shades).
    I feel that once I have made a dozen skirts, there will be so much left for squares.
    I will need to work out my skirt length and simply make sure all my tiers are exactly the same width.
    (As these are principly going to be used as underskirts for sarees, they will have a last very narrow ruffle to finish off the skirt. The part that often peeks out from under the saree.)
    But they will also at times be worn as a skirt, with a 2m length of fabric draped over the one shoulder and kept in place at the waist.

    TH-cam recommended your channel to me about a week or so ago, I'm SO glad it did! I think I've watched you frontier skirt, apron and this video at least 3 times a day since then. My favourite charity shop is confused why I have suddenly started buying bed linen along with my normal slightly bizarre combination of random favourite things. Your videos are so easy to follow and using pre-loved bedding is such a good idea. I'm determined to have at least 2 skirt and apron sets by the end of the month.
    Of course I've watched loads of other videos that you and Mr Rain have made, yours speak to me more as I'm definitely a fiber crafter and culinary artist... well, I attempt to be. Mr Rain's work has not been overlooked though, I have shared some of his videos to friends who I know will like them .
    Not only am I thankful for your amazing demonstrations, but also for the pure joy that radiates from you without being preachy. Your beliefs are clearly a huge part of your life and the kindness and comfort you find in them are clear to anyone who watches your channel. Never once though have I heard you saying anything against someone who believes differently to you. Far too many people who have faith, any faith not just Christian, use it as a way of looking down on others. I'll admit I've not watched you scripture or more religious videos as I feel that faith is a very personal thing, I'm not saying never though.
    I think that maybe I should have sent this as a personal message rather than a comment. I'm afraid I tend to babble on some times.
    Tl;dr... Mr and Mrs Rain are awesome.

I loved sewing on it, but I also had my mother's 1938 Singer Featherweight, which I also loved. I still have it but it needs some TLC before I can use it again. I have been sewing for over 30 years and I have that very machine. I agree completely. I've had cheap O machines, an $800 huskavarna, and a bernina 1008. But that one takes the cake as the best. Also, because of the lower speed and total control of the treadle it will go through ANYTHING. Without breaking a dozen needles. Going to make this skirt when life slows down a bit😁.

    Such a beautiful pattern. I never thought about gathering two sections onto the top layer of a skirt. Such an easy way to make it look fuller. I also love the way you made the gathers uneven to have it look more homemade. I appreciate your taking time to explain how to make the pull ties for the waist. I just wanted to put out an update. I made three of these three months ago and loved them. Since then we've bought our first house and I've spent the last month, renovating, cleaning, gardening and moving, all while wearing the skirts. Bailing pond water, digging beds, moving heavy furniture, sanding and refinishing floors, plumbing, and painting. They've held up marvelously, they are more than sturdy enough to work in. There was never a moment were I felt I needed to change out of them, although I might have if open flame was involved and I was very careful to keep them back while running a belt sander so not to catch them (hair back, skirts back). They are so unbelievably comfortable, I have such a good range of movement and I don't have to sacrifice modesty. The comfort of yoga pants without having to show anything. I think a really important addition for me is that I wear an Elizabethan (17th century) style petticoat underneath. I made it from a bedsheet and some cotton twill, it ties in the back and the front. It's pleated down to my waist size (I wear skirts on the waist). I think it's important because the petticoat keeps the skirt from "tangling" or bunching between my legs when I walk, holds the skirts away from my ankles and gives a bit more modesty if you are not wearing anything underneath, and because of it's design it won't lift when wind lifts the outer skirt. I also like the puffy, "bell" shape it gives me. You can change the petticoat often and minimize how often you need to wash the outer skirt(if you're not doing anything very messy, also wear an apron on top to stay clean). Most importantly is it holds it away from my legs a bit, I don't step and trip when walking up stairs with my hands full or getting up and down. Ladders and step stools were fine and carrying heavy furniture up stairs didn't trip me up. One petticoat was fine when it was colder, but next year I want to try making a quilted one. I had to wear a pair of pants once in the past month (desperate on laundry day) and it was so hot and uncomfortable, I changed the minute I could.
    Another thing that started happening since wearing them exclusively, older women talk to me a lot when in public. They come up to me and talk about my skirt and housework, it's such an interesting thing to connect with other women, strangers, because of the skirts. I think a lot of women would wear these if they were widely available, I don't think women are as happy with pants (and fast fashion, poorly made pants at that) as we're led to believe.
    Thank you again for your videos and sharing your lifestyle, it's helped me improve my life and home.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have been thinking more about making petticoats but I do make my own leggings for underneath for added modest and warmth in winter. I find myself making them looser all the time as they are more comfortable and also hide more if by chance something happens that causes my legs to be seen.

    You might like to try a ruffler attachment for gathering up the material. I’m not familiar with your machine, but most are one of two types, slant or straight attachments. I never could use a ruffler attachment when I was sewing a lot and my kids were young, I just didn’t have the time or patience to fiddle with it, but I found some interesting info on TH-cam channels in recent years so I’m going to try again when making myself this skirt. I have been restoring a couple of antique and vintage machines the past couple of years and they came with a lot of interesting attachments. The most recent one I found was a late 1800s singer ginger bread treadle in a beautiful if imperfect parlor cabinet. It was in really rough shape when I bought it so I got it really cheap. The machine was frozen solid. It took me some time, research and quite a bit of elbow grease to get it moving. I’ve been busy with some other projects, but as soon as I get a chance to time it I’m going to try to make this skirt on it.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have just never been interested in a ruffler because I have been gathering by hand like this for years and can do so pretty quickl, I just do not have to think about it

    • @tagladyify
      @tagladyify 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RainCountryHomestead I always did the basting stitch and gather method, but hated the large amount of time it took and waste of thread. If I cannot get the hang of the ruffler I will give your method a try. I’m in a strange, but satisfying stage of rediscovery. Sewing is one of the things I am revisiting, all of the crafts really. One thing I have learned over the years is we are trained not to trust our own senses from birth and we are much more capable than we ever give ourselves credit for. Still it’s always a surprise when one more way it’s happening is uncovered.

    The cord drawstring could be knitted too. Just take 2 2-points needles (the ones used for socks), cast on 3 stitches, knit a row, without turning the work, slide the work to the other end of the needle, knit the row again, continue that way until the lenght you want, it makes a very smooth cord. It takes longer than crochet but worth it.
    I like that skirt, very pretty. I will try to do one.

    Thank you so much, for this Heidi. I am currently making me a skirt and had questions about the waistband. Like where to mark for the button holes. I love the idea of elastic and draw cord. These skirts are pretty hefty with all the material in them. I think elastic alone, would drop the skirt around my ankles and some point. lol Since my skirt is for me, I ran the elastic all the way around, and will be adding a draw cord or some kind. I like the pointers about zigzagging to join the squares. I did both. Straight stitch then zigzag the edges. Takes sooooooo long to do that. I also hand ruffled mine. That takes a long time too. I thought if I tried it your way, it would turn out so uneven, it would look like a mess. I am not happy with my waist band and will be redoing it too. I am going to take notes, should I try this again. Even though making my own saves me money, if I add in all the hours that I have in it, I don't think it does. Especially since I don't know what I am doing, so it takes twice as long. Which is my justification for considering, buying another one of yours. :o)

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was initially doing the straight and then zig zag, that is what I used on yours, but found I could do a better, faster job simply using a tighter zig zag the first time around.
