wasnt that the whole point of him being in the back during shows? tools following became like a cult and he was elevated to a pedestal, and he decided to be stationed in the shadows so people just enjoy the art, not think about who made it.

When I was watching this live at the end of lateralus, I don't know how in the shit tool does this but.... when Maynard starts the final verses after Danny's drum solo the freaking screen came out and the graphics were literally on Maynard. He grabbed a pair of wings or something put him on his back then he threw them off and was dancing around with this fire looking being , then he throws the fire being back into the screen and points at it. I rewatched it sober to see what was going on while I was seeing this. Maynard wax doing all the same hand motions but there were no wings. I don't think this was just a hallucination I'm positive this was done on purpose. I just don't know how they do things like this. I was lost for words and I've never seen anything like that. It was amazing and stretched my mind out to what things are possible

Many different takes on this. 1, puts more focus on the band out of respect for them and their artistry. 2, shows that you don't have to be fro t and center for attention to get your music point across. OK, to a certain extent, I can agree with you. i understand he doesn't want the spotlight on him, and he wants to audience to focus on the other members too So, i can understand maybe being in the shadows a bit etc, but singing AT the video screen? That just brings more attention on him, IMO..
It leaves the audience lacking, they did pay good money, and (many) came a long distance to come see the band, he is part of the band. i would feel cheated if i went to the concert. thats just me though.
Looks like he doesn't fully turn his back to the audience until after someone shines a laser in his face (toward the end of 10,000 Days). He might have just been protecting his eyes in this case, first by leaving the stage before the end of 10,000 Days and then turning his back for the remaining songs.
You have a good eye, maybe that is the reason..I'm sure by the time of this concert, he wasn't going to be putting up with any concert goer's shenanigans..I'd probably be pissed too.i do think though towards the end of tool's career, he just wasn't feeling it anymore, so if anything irritated him, he just wasn't going to have any of it from the crowd.
