My favorite Tool track easily because it penetrates the soul and awakens the most frightening parts of our emotional existence, but one can’t help but love the pain because it transcends us all.
My dad died of pancreatic cancer that spread through his whole body on May 30th 2022. I wasn’t a Tool fan yet but he FOR SURE was. His birthday is June 25th, as a birthday gift we were all gonna see see Maynard’s other band, Puscifer, which I also never listened to. But I’m pissed off, he was so close to his birthday, he was so close to the concert, it was on June 11th. He didn’t even get to see one of his favorite singers once, it was his dream to see Maynard live, and it never happened. After the concert, i was willing to check out more of the band, but before I dove deeper into Puscifer, i knew i had to try Tool. I listened to the album “Undertow” and it blew me away. I had it on repeat constantly, then in like august, i decided to listen to Ænima, Lateralus, and 10,000 days all in one sitting on the same day. And that night I went to my local store and purchased a Lateralus cd, then i checked out Fear Inoculum, then opiate, then bought undertow on vinyl , then bought 10,000 days, then bought the fear Inoculum expanded book edition, and lastly traveled to Jerome Az with my grandpa to Puscifer, the store, and got the classic opiate cd. I’ve been listening to Tool nearly every day for almost a year along with Perfect Circle and Puscifer. Now as a genuine tool fan, I’m gonna make it my life goal to see Tool live for my dad.
Exactly what I expected different from the studio album, this is so much more heartbreaking. You can hear his emotion instead of a grunting low singing. Love it, and hope I will be lucky enough to see it live one day.
I wasn't at this particular show but on this tour. I distinctly remember looking around at the start of this song and EVERYONE was locked in, eyes forward, not a peep from the crowd!! Tool fans know what's up, proper respect was given

my mother passed away in 2022 with covid, she had been in pain for a very long time with other medical issues and she had been living with me for the past 3 and a half years. she was a christian and i'm an atheist and we had many discussions on the topic of faith and religion. this song breaks my fucking heart every time i hear it. this is the MOST heartfelt tribute ever penned and i'm so grateful to Maynard for writing it.
This song helped get me through my mother's last year, and the year after her passing. I didn't eat much. Not much sleep. Taking care of a 4 year old daughter who has no recollection of the stories my mother told her. Except what I remind her of. Wrecked my heart physically and emotionally. But the music helped. I was not so alone. So grateful
When it comes to Danny's drumming people keep talking about Rossetta Stoned, Pnuema or Lateralus and rightly so, but how come nobody ever mention this song? His drumming is so delicate, elegant, creative here. How he creates atmosphere with different rhythms on the cymbals, Then the unique pattern he plays from 3:13 onwards. Masterful. Just masterful.
I managed to catch them on this tour in Glasgow and this song was unbelievable. It was my favourite song on the album and I had no idea they were going to play it. Can't quite put words on the feeling being there experiencing it.
I was lucky to see them twice in 2006, Lisbon and Madrid, but sadly they didn´t play this song on either show... Holy God, it is so beautiful.... Amazing
When I first started listening to these songs (i.e before i knew the story) I thought they were really great songs by themselves. Then, I read up on them out of curiosity and afterwards everytime Maynard shouted "Unconditional one!" I always shed a few tears from the sheer power combined with the story behind the two songs. And now, with my grandma being dead only a month; give or take, these are very hard songs to listen to and every time Maynard utters the three words "bring me home" at the end of the song I start crying because I'm positive that my grandma is in heaven now and that she will serve god as a pillar of light along with Ms. Judith Marie.
@@stickyjocky thank you, that means a lot. i know she is, and i know she's kicking ass while being there because she lived a lot longer than the doctors expected.

On the 10,000 Days tour when they were playing this, pretty sure some asshole threw something on the stage during one of the quieter parts.. They never played it again after that.
The quality of this live performance is mind blowing. I get emotional every time I play it. Maynard’s vocals are so Raw. And the reason why Tool is in league all their own.
The universe brought Tool together, it was destiny. How else do you explain the greatest vocalist of all time moving in next door to the greatest drummer of all time and this century’s most talented and visionary artistic genius? Coincidence?!
JHaz to me what sets Maynard apart is his emotion and passion when he sings. I think there are more gifted singers but Maynard is my number 1, followed by Robert Plant and Freddie
Yeah exactly. There are technically more "talented" vocalists but it's not preferred. There's probably some 18 year old that songs Bubblegum pop that's technically a "better" singer but obviously that's not our thing. In the end it comes down to individual voice and style.
Lord Jesus. I am a New fan and this is one of the best songs I have ever heard. They are the best band i have ever known in my life. This song has a Puscifer mood, he sings in a Lower range, so Gothic, he seems another person. I deeply love him. The song is something not of this earth.
I know it’s been said a lot, but I just feel the need to point it out…from 9:40 until the end of the song, the silence of the crowd says it all.... there’s not a scream, whistle, clap or anything. When have you ever been at a live show and thousands of people are totally hushed during a super quiet part of a song? Only Tool fans are on this level. I Hope Maynard noticed.
This song is so so powerful, enough to move me to tears when I really give it my full attention. And I rarely cry. Must have taken a lot of strength to get up in front of hundreds of strangers to sing such a personal song and nail it at the same time.
We listen to the tales and romanticize, How we'd follow the path of the hero. Boast about the day when the rivers overrun, How we rise to the height of our halo. Listen to the tales as we all rationalize, Our way into the arms of the savior. Feigning all the trials and the tribulations. None of us have actually been there, Not like you... Ignorant siblings in the congregation. Gather around spewing sympathy, Spare me... None of them can even hold a candle up to you. Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see. But enough about the collective Judas. Who could deny you were the one who illuminated Your little piece of the divine? And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me I'm gonna let it shine To guide you safely on your way. Your way home... Oh, what are they gonna do when the lights go down? Without you to guide them all to Zion? What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun Other than tremble incessantly? High is the way, But our eyes are upon the ground. You are the light and the way. They'll only read about. I only pray heaven knows, When to lift you out. 10,000 days in the fire is long enough. You're going home... You're the only one who can hold your head up high. Shake your fist at the gates saying, "I've come home now! Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father. Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. It's time now! My time now! Give me my Give me my wings!" Give me my [5x] Give me my wings You are the light, the way, That they will only read about. Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance. Burden of proof tossed upon the believers. You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence, Judith Marie, unconditional one. Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence. Difficult to see you in this light. Please forgive this bold suggestion. Should you see your maker's face tonight, Look him in the eye. Look him in the eye and tell him, "I never lived a lie, never took a life, But surely saved one. Hallelujah It's time for you to bring me home."
Maynard said in an interview once that this is the most difficult song of their's to play live. I don't doubt it...what a masterpiece. They have mastered the art of crescendo. I just wish the camera man spent more time on danny and justin playing their instruments instead of watching maynard's silhouette just standing there
Amazing beauty this song has. It was played maybe a handful of times. Such a personal song from Maynard about his mother's struggle being crippled after having a stroke and still having so much faith in god. I know what it's like to watch your mother slowly wither and die. Different circumstances, I was 29 but it stays with you forever. I always get a tear from the depth of Manard's lyrics in this song. The music is phenomenal. These guys are legends that have stood the test of time. I've seen TOOL maybe seven times since 97' and in my opinion, the 10,000 Days Tour is still my favorite.
I bawl when I listen to this song....it always moves me to such an emotional state. Their music is so transcending. I can't even describe how much it affects me.
If you dont cry when you hear this, you're not human. You have no heart or compassion if you don't get emotional listening to this. One of Tools most beautiful songs. 13 years later, I still shed tears when I hear it. Saw them do it live 13 years ago. There wasn't a dry eye in the house that night.

Was never one of those super fanatic tool fans but I don’t care who you are this song hits something. The atmosphere, build up, the way Maynard starts reserved and slowly lets out more and more. Everyone I’ve showed this song to has liked it, even people who don’t like rock.
Never in my life have I heard a more perfect live version of a song.... I could simply NOT tell if this was a recorded track or not. Basically sounds like the album version with audience members dubbed in.... Only Tool could perform such perfection live!

I've been getting all of their stuff on CD as well. I'm certain you will make it to a show brother! God bless your father.
Exactly what I expected different from the studio album, this is so much more heartbreaking. You can hear his emotion instead of a grunting low singing. Love it, and hope I will be lucky enough to see it live one day.
Clayton Gorman sadly he doesn't sing this live anymore; understandably this song is painful for him to sing
@@Jacob1451_Kapnobatai doesn’t after a show where some douche kept yelling “PLAY THE POT” during this song
Christ I'm a hairy arsed construction worker & this is that emotional & powerful the tears are rolling down my cheeks.
Which cheeks😳
What a performance and what a crowd. Love the togetherness of the fans and the band.
I wasn't at this particular show but on this tour. I distinctly remember looking around at the start of this song and EVERYONE was locked in, eyes forward, not a peep from the crowd!! Tool fans know what's up, proper respect was given
@@RunawayOcelot
Saw them in 2006 in New Jersey. Man the entire arena was silent, respectful and just in the zone. Tears were shed that night. So haunting was MJK's voice. You could feel his pain. It was heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. I really felt for him that night. The whole audience did.
This song truely is a gift. But the writer noted, it's a mistake that he'll never make again. Blessed.
I was at this concert , it was just epic it was my 4 th time seeing them .jesus a tool concert is just a journey. From start to finish you are taken with them to a far off place
Where was this? Nokia?

Surfing an ancient wave
putting aside the fact that this song as a whole is an absolute masterpiece, i think it has one of the best guitar solos ever made.
I'm not crying... you're crying...
my mother passed away in 2022 with covid, she had been in pain for a very long time with other medical issues and she had been living with me for the past 3 and a half years. she was a christian and i'm an atheist and we had many discussions on the topic of faith and religion. this song breaks my fucking heart every time i hear it. this is the MOST heartfelt tribute ever penned and i'm so grateful to Maynard for writing it.
😢 I know we may never see this live again but I can only hope some day it makes it back on a set list. Maynard’s voice here is magic
So grateful
If I died right after this show, I would’ve said “This was a great life”
the emotion in his voice is viscerally touching
I'm totally aware that Danny, Justin and Adam write the music before Maynard puts lyrics to the instruments.
But this is pure magical and perfect.
I was fortunate to see them perform this song live 4 different times, and all 4 make it in to my top 10 Tool songs performed live that I've seen.
Step 1: Try not to cry
Step 2: Cry alot.
Dude wrong the best progressive metal song about a tribute to his passing mother of suffering 10,000 days. What a badass.
I was lucky to see them twice in 2006, Lisbon and Madrid, but sadly they didn´t play this song on either show... Holy God, it is so beautiful.... Amazing
I have no idea how they managed to play this song live like this... utmost respect...
Hope your grandma is in a place wear she can't feel pain
@@stickyjocky thank you, that means a lot. i know she is, and i know she's kicking ass while being there because she lived a lot longer than the doctors expected.
I’m so glad I got to see them perform this live three times. The fourth time I took my wife and they didn’t do it. I was disappointed because I know they will never do it live again.
On the 10,000 Days tour when they were playing this, pretty sure some asshole threw something on the stage during one of the quieter parts.. They never played it again after that.
The Unwanted Scrub wow that really sucks.
Greatest vocalist of all time? That's a stretch.
@@jhaz89 or a matter of opinion
@@kitpalmer1583 Yeah I know
JHaz to me what sets Maynard apart is his emotion and passion when he sings.
Absolutely one of the best songs and instrumental period!!
Love your HL profile pic as well
We listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we'd follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun,
How we rise to the height of our halo.
Listen to the tales as we all rationalize,
Our way into the arms of the savior.
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations.
None of us have actually been there,
Not like you...
Ignorant siblings in the congregation.
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me...
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.
But enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated
Your little piece of the divine?
And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me
I'm gonna let it shine
To guide you safely on your way.
Your way home...
Oh, what are they gonna do when the lights go down?
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?
High is the way,
But our eyes are upon the ground.
You are the light and the way.
They'll only read about.
I only pray heaven knows,
When to lift you out.
10,000 days in the fire is long enough.
You're going home...
You're the only one who can hold your head up high.
Shake your fist at the gates saying,
"I've come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my
Give me my wings!"
Give me my [5x]
Give me my wings
You are the light, the way,
That they will only read about.
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance.
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.
Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion.
Should you see your maker's face tonight,
Look him in the eye.
Look him in the eye and tell him,
"I never lived a lie, never took a life,
But surely saved one.
Hallelujah
It's time for you to bring me home."
Thank you for the lyrics. This song always brings me to tears and makes me grateful for the time I have with my mom.
Every mother should crave to have a son like maynard.
Gambit The Exiled I was thinking this too. What a woman she must have been.
best video i came across where i could see maynard's shadowy figured self...
Phenomenal. This is music and art at its purest form. A moment in time forever captured but in the best way imaginable.
Maynard said in an interview once that this is the most difficult song of their's to play live. I don't doubt it...what a masterpiece. They have mastered the art of crescendo. I just wish the camera man spent more time on danny and justin playing their instruments instead of watching maynard's silhouette just standing there
Yes Justin is most fascinating to watch play he brings so much energy
The bass sounds so sick. Such a good song!
legit tears :( so beautiful
I concur.
Beautiful song about a son’s love and misplaced anger over his mother’s illness and ultimate passing.
Arrrrrgh when he growls “give me my wings” u can feel the pain 🥺
On the end of the song you can perfectly hear only the sound of silence and pure emotion... my eternal respect .
I absolutely love how the crowd respect Maynard and the band enough to stay silent through this emotional, powerful song
The best live version
One of the best songs by the greatest band of all time. There will never be another TOOL. They will never be surpassed.
When you sing that passionately it does tear you up, some physical reaction gets the emotions flowing. This is why we love Tool........
This is a masterpiece. I never listened to it until recently and I can't stop listening to it. Amazing song and band.
greatest band ever of all time history WAS made.
Gorgeous did not know they played this live ever. Grateful to be able to witness.
This is exactly what got me hooked.♥️✌️ Glad I lived to see them live again
I saw this show the day after 10K days came out in Ausitn, Tx. We were in a theater that held 300 individuals. One of my favorite shows to date.
All the goosebumps 😭😭😭 This song has a whole new meaning now that i know the meaning behind it 💗
Tool is the very best band that has and ever will exist.Just listen to this song for proof. They are the only band that I have never heard a single weak song from.
I just witnessed a very very deep definition of pain. The pain of loosing someone you care and love..
Something special happened on this stage that night .
High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground
You were the light and the way they'll only read about
I only pray Heaven knows when to lift you out
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough
You're going home
Love how towards the end of the song, instead of Carry leading off, as is tradition, they let Maynard
Was never one of those super fanatic tool fans but I don’t care who you are this song hits something. The atmosphere, build up, the way Maynard starts reserved and slowly lets out more and more. Everyone I’ve showed this song to has liked it, even people who don’t like rock.
An absolute masterpiece, I tear up everytime I hear it.
God damn. So glad I got to see this live. Wish I appreciated it more at the time though.
Never in my life have I heard a more perfect live version of a song.... I could simply NOT tell if this was a recorded track or not.
Basically sounds like the album version with audience members dubbed in.... Only Tool could perform such perfection live!
My god I would have killed to be there. Possibly THE most beautiful and most powerful song ever made and they get to hear it live since Tool doesn't play it anymore on tour due to it being to difficult.
You are there. This is as good as it gets, turn it up.
Freaking Justin Chancellor couldn't have written a better bass for this song, it's so overwhelming, I'm crying now
wow, really wish they still did this song live.
