The lyric in the song when he sings "she's all that I have left, and Music is her name" is a reference to Stephen Stills' actual sailboat named Music. For me, this is one of those songs that I wouldn't mind if it just kept going. It's too short.
I love how it truly is a suite, like a medley of several songs that are still all the same song (I'm thinking of classical pieces like Water Music or the Nutcracker Suite). It's beautiful... And kind of funny, because I think Stephen Stills wrote it Judy Collins, all about their love and how they should be together... He played it for her, she cried because it was wonderful, then immediately said, "But we're not getting back together."
I learned to sing harmony in my early years by singing along with the Beach Boys, the Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds, and the Hollies (i.e. CSN and Y). This song is the epitome of their musical brilliance. I'm 67 and have been bested.
What a lyric: “So I’m sailing for tomorrow, my dreams are a-dying And my love is an anchor tied to you Tied with a silver chain I have my ship And all her flags are a-flying She is all that I have left And music is her name.”
He had been divorced and his wife and lawyers and taxes had taken everything he had except his sailboat, named Music. "In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you, but on a midnight watch I realized, ...... It's about what you learn about your life while having the time to reflect on hours long night watches at sea...a common occurrence for anyone blessed to be doing midnight watches on a sailboat traveling to the south Pacific Islands.
Oh holy hell……those harmonies!!! My god…..no one like CSN….I adored their music back in 1969……still do! Losing David Crosby this year seems like such a travesty…..such a beautiful voice forever stilled. Combine with Stills and Nash….heavenly harmonies
When this came out I was a teenager into metal, early hip hop, early U2, Sabbath... and every single time this song came on MTV I could never turn away. It was like Rolaids for the soul. Great song.
Drop a needle anywhere on the Deja Vu album and you won't be disappointed. Wooden Ships is a must listen even if you don't do a reaction. CSN and CSNY are a deep, deep rabbit hole with many songs worth a reaction.. Four legendary musicians that are in the Pantheon of rock music.

It's not a choir, it's two dudes doing the backup. Crosby and Nash. You saw these two do backups for David Gilmour on the ON AN ISLAND video. The two gray haired guy. Incredible harmonies. We lost David Crosby this year 😢. Stephen Stills is singing lead, a legend as well.
I believe that it is all three of them harmonizing and not just two of them. Steven sang the lead and then join Crosby and Nash on the choruses. Pretty sure the original video shows that
Timothy B. Schmit from the Eagles is actually singing on this one (it won't let me put a link to the article, TH-cam blocks links but you can google it). David Crosby was not in good shape when the album was made and didn't sing on this song.
Harmonies, harmonies, harmonies Polo. It brought a tear knowing that they will never harmonize again. It was not a jam, but such a unique smooth blend of voices that I really appreciated every time I hear their work. Thanks. 🖖🏼
There are so MANY Crosby, Stills and Nash songs to explore and with Neil Young. It's very worth your time exploring. They've been playing together since the mid 60's so for them, this a new(er) song (1982).
I was at a Pearl Jam concert and David Crosby was 2 seats to my left. He was rockin' just as hard as the rest of us! May this talented musician rest in the arms of the angels.🥀
Graham Nash was from the Hollies,Stephen Stills was from Buffalo Springfield, and David Crosby was from The Byrds. They first came together along with Neil Young and performed at Woodstock in 1969. Southern Cross is a constellation in the Southern sky made up of 4 bright stars forming the shape of a Cross, used for centuries by sailors for point of navigation.
CSN formed in 1968 shortly after Crosby, Stills and Nash performed together informally, discovering they harmonized well. Crosby had been asked to leave the Byrds in late 1967, Stills' band Buffalo Springfield had broken up in early 1968, and Nash left his band the Hollies in December. They signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records in early 1969. Their first album, Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969)
One of the cooler experiences I had, was working on a ship. I got to see the Southern Cross rising above the horizon as we crossed the equator at night. This song of course was playing in my head.
Any songs by Crosby, Stills (and Nash (and Young)) are going to be great. They are often hard for TH-cam creators to get them past the censors (or whatever they are). Our House, Ohio, Teach Your Children are all great songs.
A classic trio, and when they included Neil Young for a few albums they really took off. The bands each guy “ cut their teeth with” were all legendarily great. Stephen Stills ( and Neil Young) with Buffalo Springfield; Graham Nash with The Hollies; and David Crosby with The Byrd’s. Great reaction!!!
To fully understand the meaning of what this song is about, must one has had their heart broken and have spent time off-shore, crossing large spans of saltwater oceans on a sailboat and completed hours of time solo at the helm during night watches. The time one spends at sea in these circumstances forces one's mind into examine ones life in a whole new way.
This song is almost a ballad. Stephen is singing about a bad break-up. He gets on his boat, and heads for French Polynesia in the South Pacific, hence the sailing references "Sailing a Reach" and "Following Seas". The Southern Cross is a Constellation in the Southern Hemisphere. Sailors used it for navigation.
Their song Ohio is one you should check out. It’s about the killing of 4 Kent State students who were protesting the Vietnam War on 5/4/70 by the Ohio National Guard. A powerful song.
This song taught me a lot about nautical terms! 😂 I had no clue what a lot of the lyrics meant or were referring to, and my curiosity forced me to look them up! Now I’m a semi-educated sailor 😂
Crosby Stills and Nash were classic rebel rock from the late 60's early 70s...Viet Nam era. Famously wrote the song Ohio after the Kent State shootings during an anti war riot at the university. I still have all of their LPs. I think their best song was Long Time Gone...IMHO
Others liked the song "For What It's Worth" written by Stephen Stills while he and Graham Nash were in the Buffalo Springflield band. Wow there is a blast from the past for me. Thanks for the memory dude.
The reason there are such great vocals in this band is each member of the band were lead vocals of other bands. The Hollies, Buffalo Springfield & The Byrds.
Great story about a failed relationship and running away on his sailboat. Note: This is a voyage in the Southern Hemisphere. The Southern Cross is a star constellation. Neil Young was often a 4th member. Listen to Buffalo Springfield, a precursor band, What it's Worth for a song regarding the era of Vietnam War protests.
When I was a senior in high school I asked for the Four Way Street album. I played it multiple times daily. That was in 1969-70. I still love all their music!

Fortunate enough to see him in early 80’s. The venue was Willie’s Opry House in Austin, TX. He sang a cappella. Not a sound other than his voice. Quite a special night!
David Crosby played the next door neighbor on the Rosanne Barr show. He also played with the Byrds in the 60’s. Neil Young also was in this group but left to become a solo artist.
A wonderful song, and one that always reminds me of travelling from Britain to where I live now (New Zealand), and seeing the Southern Cross on the horizon - the most prominent constellation in the southern hemisphere sky, not visible in the north. The line "We never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do" gets me every time. CSN are a great band - brilliant three-part harmonies. Unique in the rock and roll world with their harmonies, they started as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Neil Young went out on his solo career as did the rest of the group over time leaving us harmony-less.

It is amazing what music does. 3 men with totally different types of voices. 2 men with giant egos and a peacemaker. Put them together with music and magic happens every time.
This track is incredible. I'm a 90s kid, and the way this song makes me feel, I honestly wonder if I connected with it in a prior life or something. It's like my soul knows it
The song is about sailing “across “ the equator and sailors call it the southern cross. Our Navy has a tradition when new sailors make their first crossing. Traditionally a male only Navy, the tradition was like hazing with what would be considered very inappropriate today in our PC society.
Also in on the harmonies is the late great Mike Finnigan, B3 too. He played B3 on Jimmi's Electric Lady Land. Also, too, he was the leader of Taj Mahal's backup band the Phantom Blues Band.
Each of these guys are a huge part of music history, add in the work with Neil Young, a powerful group as well as individual accomplishments. Music trivia, the second concert CSNY played...Woodstock. Check out Helplessly Hoping.
