Young wrote this about the caretaker of the ranch he bought in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the old man was once like this young man.
The caretaker of the that cattle ranch? His name was Louis Avila. The ranch was the Broken Arrow Ranch, purchased for $350,000 in 1970 (just think about those real estate prices compared to now!). Reportedly, Avila was giving Young a tour of the place and asked him how a young man like him could afford a place like this. Young, aged 25, replied "Just lucky, Louie, just real lucky." Avila was quite bemused. Peace out.

I've seen Neil 12 times. First concert was with Crazy Horse in 1987. I was 18 years old. In fact it was my first concert ever. Most of his concerts, that I've seen anyway have been acoustic for the first half. Then rip your face off, full on for the second half.
There was only one concert I was not impressed with and that was his Harvest Moon concert. Neil played with Booker T and the MGs and it was great. It was the opening acts that sucked ass. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. They were absolutely horrible live. And I had to sit for over two hours listening to that crap. To this day I still won't listen to anything by them. Maybe their live performances have gotten better ? When I saw them they were both fairly new to the scene. 91 ? 92? Somewhere around there.

In 1990 I was on the Grateful Dead Europe tour, and living in Lake Tahoe at the time. When I returned I came into San Fransisco around 8 pm, having left Zurich Switzerland 36 hours earlier. Needless to say, I was beyond out of it from jet lag and lack of sleep. The friend who picked me up at SFO just moved into a care taker position on a piece of property above Santa Cruz, and his nearest neighbor was Neil. The house he lived in was about a 1/4 mile away from Neils rehearsal "barn". I slept for about 12 hours and awoke around 5pm, and as I awoke I kept hearing "Cinnamon Girl". He was jamming with Crazy Horse. They were going thru their set for the upcoming tour.I thought I was dreaming, and then found out what was really going on.I was beyond blown away with where I was and what I was hearing. I never met Neil, but the area around there is very beautiful and very lush. A truly special piece of the planet.

Neil Young has a distinctive voice, and songs that will last my lifetime and more. When he was with Crosby Stills Nash and Young, imo, brought out the best in them.
His lyrics and music spans from folk * check out Harvest Moon * to straight out rock, joining Pearl Jam to play his classic * Keep on Rockin in the Free World.
Look at Eddie Vedder as an artist with a group Pearl Jam, and solo. Eddie absolutely knows what Neal Young is about, and he so respects this amazing artist, who does things his way. He IS his own drummer, not into the celebrity ego scene, that so many feed off of. I love this about him. Rather, as this video shows, he is not into fancy clothes, nor flashing concert settings. He is there simply to sing and play his songs, and puts everything into it. A great artist indeed.

This entire album is a Classic!! Do yourself a favor and check out the entire Harvest album. Old Man, Harvest, Heart of Gold, Man Needs a Maid, just every song is great. I can't imagine being in this London audience hearing Old Man and Heart of Gold for the first time ever! The album hasn't even been recorded yet. Neil Young is a great song writer, he can do these great acoustic songs and you have to hear him on electric guitars. He was in Buffalo Springfield, Crosby Stills Nash and Yourg, and his solo stuff and his band Crazy Horse. He recorded an album not too long ago called Harvest Moon and it's supposed to be like Part 2 or follow up of the original Harvest album. For sure listen to Heart of Gold from the same album. Peace, Love, Courage from David in Detroit.

What all are watching has been recently called the "Godfather of Grunge" if you get more exposure to more of his work.
He wrote "Ohio" in about 10 minutes after watching the slaughter. He is peculiar as he is talented. Wonderful voice, great songwriting and angst to go with it.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for reacting to this song!! I totally get your feeling his voice sounds young, but wise! I love that!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE react to more Neil Young (ANYTHING off Harvest album is gold. ALSO, you've GOT to listen to him with Crosby, Stills and Nash. The Deja Vu album is my personal favorite~ I grew up on their music and this is an anthem to the 60's and early 70's. Take a deep dive into all their music and you will come away with the real history of an era in America that doesn't get taught in schools. Can't wait to have you post more of these geniuses!!!

Neil Young is one of my favorite performers, I like to call him THE MAN. Only seen him four times, and I wish it was 400. He was very young when he wrote and performed this song, this concert was in England I believe, and he holds the audience in the palm of his hand. Neil has a wide and deep catalog, "Powderfinger", "Cinnamon Girl", Harvest Moon", "Cortez The Killer", "My My Hey Hey Out of The Blue", "Hey Hey My My Into The Black", "Sugar Mountain", "Heart Of Gold", "Rocking In The Free World", etc. He has been called the Godfather Of Grunge, and has played with EVERYBODY, because everybody want to play with him.

I was a teen girl when this song arrived on a scene to us kids who by this time were beautifully saturated and intertwined with incredible, meaningful, beautiful music . Neil Young wrote this song when he bought a ranch and the old man was on the scene . Young was what you would call an old soul . He also sang in a small group called Grosby , Stills and Nash . I had the privilege of seeing them at an incredible venue . One of the best concerts I’ve seen in my life . I’m 68 and music has defined my generation. Neil Young defined that time of our lives.

Neil young’s” Gold Rush” was the album wove through my young self. I love this . I had four cassettes in my van bus & one was Gold Rush. Those four cassettes were played consistently for 2 yrs. But Neil Young is such a great song writer. People comment on his rough voice. Take the whole package, he’s just great. This style of music is kinda California vibes, it’s a little bit country. So glad you like this too. He was great live. Back in the70’s. I can’t pick my favorite, but he sang with C,S & N & the song that blew my 18 yr old mind was when they were called Buffalo Springfield. & they sang” Love the one your with”. And Four dead in Ohio. Powerful protest songs. The 60’s were angry & they wrote about it. It’s our history of the revolution telling the older generation that we are taking over. And we did it, & it all turned out pretty well. Love it or leave it, eh?

This was from British TV (BBC) in 1970 I think. such a talent. Just a man and his guitar, no audio gadgets to make him sound better or whatever. The so-called "artists" of today, would never have the confidence or guts to do a live performance like this. We were all so much younger at this time.
