I loved this song when I was young. My kids are grown now and that second part of the song rings loud and clear to me now, when they sing to the children to feed their parents on their own dreams, to teach their parents well. This song was such an Anthem in the 1960s, when there was so much division between the older generation and the young. early 71, CSNY released Teach as a single & it headed up the charts. then Kent State happened. Neil was out at a cabin with I think Crosby, watching the nightly news & it was all about the massacre. Neil grabs a notebook & heads for the woods. an hour later he's back with Ohio written down. he plays it for his bandmate who immediately calls the other two & plays it again. they grabbed the next available slot at a studio & record it & ship it to the label. mind you, Teach was on the charts & headed up, releasing Ohio now would clearly interfere to some degree. didn't matter & the label execs never suggested it. 10 days after the attack Ohio hit stores with Find the Cost of Freedom on the B side.

This song was such an Anthem in the 1960s, when there was so much division between the older generation and the young. This song speaks to the fact that we cannot possibly understand what shaped our elders, nor they what's driving their kids to be the people they will be, you don't have to get it, just love them and it will be alright.

Not Jerry in the photo, but by coincidence, he is the one playing pedal steel. This was during what Bob Weir described as his period of flirtation with the pedal steel guitar.

early 71, CSNY released Teach as a single & it headed up the charts. then Kent State happened. Neil was out at a cabin with I think Crosby, watching the nightly news & it was all about the massacre. Neil grabs a notebook & heads for the woods. an hour later he's back with Ohio written down. he plays it for his bandmate who immediately calls the other two & plays it again. they grabbed the next available slot at a studio & record it & ship it to the label. mind you, Teach was on the charts & headed up, releasing Ohio now would clearly interfere to some degree. didn't matter & the label execs never suggested it. 10 days after the attack Ohio hit stores with Find the Cost of Freedom on the B side.

He's a wonderful, beautiful man who is honorable, truthful, and lovely--even when he's being a total poop head, which is only natural. Not a day goes by that I pray I did right by him and will continue to, although my own life has been wrought with a lot of experiences he faced too young But so did I, as a child. I sang this song in an a capella group in college. One of the funnest, most surprisingly touching songs I’ve ever sung. Something about the harmonies with the lyrics together just hit the sweet spot. I think I like it more without instruments. The vocal harmonies are plenty!
