Thanks for playing this song Jamal. CSN&Y converted my mom to hippie music. It took my dad a lot longer. She bought me their fist album and absolutely loved this song. I always think of her when I hear it (often with a nostalgic tear or two). Your reaction is spot on and captures one of the basic tenants of the hippie movement. Funny you dig the Dead so much. I saw them 26 times from 69 - 73 including our man Jerry play pedal steel for the New Riders of the Purple Sage in Boston. We went in at sunset and came out at sunrise. What a trip.

This song was such an Anthem in the 1960s, when there was so much division between the older generation and the young. This song speaks to the fact that we cannot possibly understand what shaped our elders, nor they what's driving their kids to be the people they will be, you don't have to get it, just love them and it will be alright.

    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
You, who are on the road
    Must have a code
    That you can live by
    And so
    Become yourself
    Because the past
    Is just a good-bye
    [Chorus]
    Teach your children well
Your father's hell did slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
    The one they picked
    The one you'll know by
    [Post-Chorus]
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
    And know they love you
    [Verse 2]
And you of tender years (Can you hear and do you care)
Can't know the fears (And can you see)
That your elders grew by (We must be free)
And so please help (To teach your children)
Them with your youth (What you believe in)
They seek the truth (Make a world)
Before they can die (That we can live in)
    [Chorus]
    Teach your parents well
    The children's hell
    Will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
    The one they picked
    The one you'll know by
    [Post-Chorus]
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
