@@marktroyer-vr2zv According wikipedia, a former member of his band The Crazy Horse, Danny Whitten, was addicted to heroin. Late 1972, half a year after release of 'the needle ...' he died from an overdose ... 'Every junkie is like a setting sun..' (Danny Whitten wrote the song 'I don't wanna talk about it ' which became a hit for Rod Stewart in 1977 .. and in the 80s for Everything but the Girl a.o. )
It is a great line, another of the greatest songwriters John Prine had some great lines as well like "There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes. Jesus Christ died for nothing, I suppose" from his song Sam Stone
You're right, sad song. But Neil Young is amazing! Here's the back story...hope you don't mind! He wrote this as a warning to all musicians because of the effect that heroin had on his band mate & good friend from Crazy Horse, Danny Whitten & other musicians he knew that were struggling with addiction. Neil ended up firing him and giving him money to go to rehab. Whitten didn't go & od'd later that year...after the song was already released. I would think that he knew it was primarily about him. When Neil says open the Cellar door, he's referring to a bar they played where Whitten was extremely high. Neil has MANY awesome songs...either with Crazy Horse, as a solo artist, with Buffalo Springfield, or with the phenomenal Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Definitely a fav of mine. Thanks for doing this one!
Thats great, i never knew that....i always thought neil did partake at some point tho, like so many others did, i thought (“think”) i read a rolling stone article/interview decades ago, i could be totally mis-remembering tho....with how many greats who did do that stuff and all the amazing art they made, ive always been equally impressed by the artists who didnt do heroin and made great art too, so, its not like im arguing and looking to hear from u that at some point neil did do dope....ur comment is just super interesting to me, i want to research now...i never delved into neil’s history like I should have, like i did with lennon and dylan.
Sadly, Danny Whitten died the same night. The story has it that he used the money Young hand given him along the plane ticket to LA to buy heroin which he overdosed. However it was a mixture of diazepam and alcohol. He tried to get rid of the heroin on alcohol but while diazepam was a painkiller for his knee. The mixture turned out fatal.
He wrote this for Danny Whitten. Danny made an album with his band called Crazy Horse and then joined up with Neil. They became like brothers. If you have never heard Neil's album "Everybody knows this is nowhere" you should. Then you will know what a great loss Danny was. Neil spoke of all the great art that has been lost to heroine. peace
I’m so jealous that you get to hear all these songs for the first time, man. I grew up on all this music and it’s part of my soul but I’ll never have the experience of hearing it for the first time.
I'm 63 years old now & have lost family & friends to the needle... the up stoke strum on the guitar ending of this song has always reminded me of a life left unfinished! Gone too soon!
I wish i could say the same. I’ve lost more than a few friends over the years to that and other forms of substance abuse. A Sous Chef i worked with for years, had in his younger years struggled with heroin during the ‘80’s he was a musician in a punk band in NYC. His band mate and best friend one day asked him to shoot him up with heroin. His best friend OD’d two years later. I dont think John ever forgave himself or if he will. He feels responsible because he literally put the needle in his arm. I went to the service with him. It was very rough. Thats the horrible thing about the disease of addiction. Yes it hurts the user, but the people that love them the most end up suffering more. Because they have to watch the decline. Until the person hits absolute rock bottom and makes the choice to live or stay on that road which only ends one way for most. 🪦
I’ve known a heroin addict. That last line “But every junkie’s like a setting sun” hits so hard because it’s true. They just fade out, their beauty going dark, until they disappear. Sad but predictable.
Sad but True. I seriously couldn't tell you how many friends and family I have lost to oxy's, heroin and fentanyl since the year 2000. The Tragedy is unbelievable.
Yup. In my twenties had a chick friend who was arguably one of the most beautiful women in the world. She fell under the spell of the wrong guy and withered away. It was the hardest thing to watch and not kill the guy.
Had friends buy me a concert ticket. I said no thanks. They dragged me there and I’m so glad they did. Solo, surrounded by guitars, sitting in the middle, and just grabbing an acoustic one song after another, he finished the show doing songs and an old fashion pump organ. The whole arena at the MGM in Las Vegas was just vibrating. It was an amazing show something I’ll never forget.
So many great tracks: Ohio, Mr. Soul, Everybody Know This Is Nowhere, When You Dance, Walk On, Powderfinger, Southern Man, Rockin’ In The Free World, and many many others that are escapin’ my mind right now…😊
This & "Cowgirl In The Sand" are my 2 favourite Neil Young songs. Neil Young was the first concert I went to... about the same year this came out. Btw, we all kinda looked like that in the 70s... LOL
One of my favorite singer-songwriters for most of my 61 year life. Nothing shy of genius. Yes, it's a terribly sad song. His best...and saddest, IMO, is Ohio.
Polo, your channel blows me away. When an intelligent guy hears music for the first time and articulates what he hears so well. I'm all in and I love your Neil Young videos. You love Needle and Old Man, now try Don't Let It Bring You Down from that same BBC solo acoustic concert. He was 24 when he played that BBC concert. Love you man!
Neil young is amazing. Buffalo Springfield did a song called “For what it’s worth” I was so moved. Four dead in Ohio. It’s about the Nixon years. I was born in 1950 & I’ve been so fortunate to experience so much great music. I love classical music as well. My husband turned me on to Beethoven, & so many real old artists. Oh Tom Waits sings about his cars & the weather, which is like a play on words with his love life. He sings the theme song in part of the series The Peaky Blinders. It’s written by an Australian guy named Nick Cave. His band is The Bad Seeds. A bit difficult to listen to at times, but he’s very clever. Tom Waits isometimes a performance artist. He seems very crazy but he’s actually married & has a few kids. I’d like to see him at home. He has achieved his very raspy voice. Leonard Cohn was a beautiful poet & helped other folks sing his words. Hallelujah is one of my favorites. He had a pretty raspy voice, too many cigarettes. Q
I lost my love and my daughter’s father to the needle. He was like a setting sun. I feel pain when I listen to this song, but I also relate so much to it. I couldn’t help him. I’ve seen Neil live. Beautiful songs, hard songs sometimes.
Like my late friend, Leonard Cohen, Neil was a poet first, rather than "just" a songwriter. He never felt the need to overstep on stage (or in the studio, for that matter). This particular song is a perfect example of Neil's work. Here he sits, alone on the stage, just a man, his guitar & a message!! New Sub. TBH, my life has been so steeped in the world of music (vocalist, play 5 instruments & production) that I sometimes find it very hard to believe that reactors are hearing some of these "classics" for the first time!
Neil Young has been around making great rock music from the beginning. I was listening to him in Toronto when he was playing with the Mynah Birds when a guy who became Rick James was the lead singer I believe that was back in 64. He's still rocking.
My precious songbird 🕊 niece & her hub DIED 😭 MOMENTS AFTER shooting up, feet from each other; laced w/ fen. Some folks, with some substances, whether for fun or escape, get hooked by that sharp barb of utter dependence that deeply embeds within them; the more they struggle to free themselves of or from it, the deeper it digs within them. Addiction's no joke. It can change a people in ways they never dream possible or they'd never have taken their first drink, toke or hit. Truly, there but for the Grace of God, go us ALL 😔💖🙏🕊✝️
Neil young was one of my favorite singers back in the 70's when I was in college. I live in the SF Bay Area, so I've been lucky to watch him live in concerts multiple times. He is a great musician.
Mr Polo, congratulations! You have an artistic-social awareness beyond you age (I'd guess). You might like to check out, say, The Great Divide, a mellow song by Neil penned many years after 'Needle' - just saying'. I suspect you are the kind of guy who might 'get' Jethro Tull as well. All the very best with your journey, Geordie
Speaking of Neil's guitars, I think it's great that he has ended up with possession of Hank, the late, great Hank Williams favorite guitar. It would, I also think, be great if he were to lend it for a bit to Hank 3, who looks much like his grandfather and sounds like pure echo.
Neil Young, who I like to call THE MAN, is one of the best recording artists, EVER. He does much more than solo acoustic, he is also known as "The Godfather Of Grunge", for some of his electric works. This song is based on real life experiences, early in his career, and his lamentations on them. My recommendation to everyone who has never experienced Neil is to watch his concert film "Rust Never Sleeps" recorded in 1978, at one of the peaks of his career, he even directs under the name Bernard Shakey. Best songs: "Powderfinger", "Cortez The Killer", "Cinnamon Girl", "Harvest Moon", "Sugar Mountain", "After The Goldrush", "Sedan Delivery", "Like A Hurricane". "Thrasher", "My My Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue), "Hey Hey My My (Into The Black)" and "Tonight's The Night". Oh yeah, and "Rockin' In The Free World", "This Note's For You" and he just released a new album last year called "Barn".
I fell in love with Young when I was in high school and got the album After the Goldrush. I loved him with Cosby Stills and Nash-album Deja Vu is incredible. Love him in all the annual Farm Aid fundraisers with Willie Nelson. But I Iove him best when I get to watch him rock out playing his guitar. He’s in my top ten guitarists. Long may he run.
I saw him live, playing just his guitar no amplification like the video for the first hour! Amazing! Then he blew the roof off the second half of the concert! One of the best concerts I've ever seen.
Thanks for doing a reaction of Neil. I've been listening to him, and seeing him live for over 50 years. If you haven't heard "Cowgirl In The Sand" , I'd recommend reviewing it. Don't let the title mislead you, Neil takes you on a journey you never expected.
I had the privilege of seeing Neil Young and Crazy Horse live in 1976. The set was Neil Young, banjo, acoustic guitar, harmonica. The 2nd set was Neil Young & Crazy Horse. They blew it up! I was 16 years old and still my favorite concert and I've been to 100s of concerts.
Yes, it's about heroin addiction. I've loved this song since I was 14 years old. 🎶"I love you baby can I have some more."🎶 I've never done heroin but I've had friends that went that road. It always ends the same.
The song reflects the time it was written in. Singer-songwriters like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell are poets writing songs reflecting the times they were living in. Music was their means of advocacy.
I can listen to Neil Young anytime, he was doing a concert once and someone was yelling "do the needle', he looked up and responded "I've done this before!".. and he just carried on.
This performance is from the MTV Unplugged special and the whole thing is worth checking out, acoustic versions of some of his electric and acoustic hits and more
He did some great tunes with Crosby, Stills and Nash. Ohio and Helpless to name a couple. His solo stuff has some real stand out After The Gold Rush and Heart of Gold are a couple of my favorites.
Btw,I AT UPDATE APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT& WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE ABOUT WHATEVER, ARTIST OR BAND YOUR CHECKING OUT. YOU HAVE GREAT INPUT- LOVE THIS CHANNEL-THANKS, POLO👍👍🤘🤘
I’m about to be 50. Been really missing the 90’s. I’m grateful to have been a part of it all. All the killer bands, endless summers, and friends and family. Life was good.
Thank you for helping me resee him. I always chose music that made me workout or run farther and dreamy stuff was pushed aside mostly. I first heard his music and didn’t understand the lyrics. Yes, it’s beautiful but thank you for helping me understand more of its beauty and relevance.
I saw him play all alone in a concert, just him, his guitar,, harmonica, organ, I have seen probably everyone from 70’s, he is definitely the most talented! Also just for fun check out his harvest moon video! So fun, I send it to all my fav people every October! Fav music video
Awesome reaction, Polo. Neil is one of my all-time favorites. You need to check out "Rust Never Sleeps" You will thank the MANY people who have suggested it. 💜
The Needle and the Damage Done" is a 1972 song by Canadian-American singer-songwriter Neil Young. The lyrics describe the effects of heroin addiction on musicians Young knew, including his friend and Crazy Horse bandmate Danny Whitten, who would die of an overdose the same year the song was released.
"Doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you" is a lyric that pretty sublimely sums up the way I see my life. It's not very important to me to know that I mean a lot to someone else. I appreciate friends and family, but honestly I won't lose any sleep if someone doesn't agree with the person that I am!
You gotta listen to some Jackson Browne. . He is such an amazing songwriter. And the bassist for Phil Collins is also his bassist lee Sclar . Hes a singer pianist and guitar player as well. But his lyrics are super deep.
Neil Young & Bob Dylan..two of the greatest singer-songwriters ever..!! Neil is from Canada (like Joni Mitchel...another great singer-songwriter...they "came up" at the same time in the 60's..) & Bob is from Duluth, Minnesota just south of the Canadian border. Apparently, that cold weather makes for some introspective, poetic songwriting.!? Of course they've ALL written "rock music songs" which are incredible, time-tested songs.!! They are my top three fav songwriters followed by Jackson Brown & Paul Simon (of "Simon & Garfunkel" fame...).!! It is SO worth the time going down any of those "rabbit holes"..!!! INCREDIBLE bio's too...(ALL FIVE)..!!! ENJOY..!!
One of my favourites from Neil. Such a powerful message and such a unique style vocally with how he draws out the words which I've always loved and it's probably my favourite in terms of guitar work which was what made me decide to cover it myself. I think his most beautiful song is Harvest Moon though which I see you've reacted to also so I'm gonna check that out next!
Love Neil Young's lyrics he has an incredible connection to words. Hope you take a listen to more tunes of his like Southern Man, When You Dance, Harvest Moon. Thank you!
Neil was in a band yeas aho called buffalo springfield. Listen to where have all the children gone. Also he was in crosby, stilts, nash and young listen to southern cross. Teach your chikdren. Ohio. Its about kent state. And our house. The harmony is crazy
A very sad song but so true especially if you’ve have or had a loved one fighting for his or hers life I tear up every time I hear this song. For me my loved one survived but to all those who didn’t you’re miss and loved🙏🏼
Rockin In the Free World is a very dark song but is so good you forget how dark the lyrics are. Definitely a good one to listen to for a different side of his music. Southern Man is a good song too
Neil pissed off the rednecks who wrote sweet home alabama...they love the guvner, who declared segregation now, segregation forever. By the way, thats how they pronounce governor down south.
"...once the needle goes in...There's no turning back..."...Fun note, I was 2 years clean when this came out on "Harvest"...Best friend died in my arms from a heroin overdose in 1969. Not sure why he went and I didn't. Same amount from the same sack and the same needle. As far as I know we'd both shot up the same number of times too. I still did it 3 or 4 more times after...50+ years ago and I still feel a little tug now and again. When folks tell what a wonderful place Seattle is, just know it's ALWAYS had a very seedy underbelly. Had we not moved south I likely wouldn't have made it to 18...If not for that, then some other way.
Neil Young is top five my favorite!! This song he is telling us like is about heroin -but also addiction in general. I’m so grateful you did this!! Please more Neil-loved your reaction! Been checking out your content and it is fire! I love how you aren’t afraid to check out the older “hippie”, lol bands!! I’m an old woman so I was raised on late 60’s and 70’s music-so this takes me back to my teenage years! Keep making great content-you are unique! Peace and positive vibes!! ✌️🎵
Good reaction! If you want to hear some of his best electric side, try 'Cortez the Killer', 'Powderfinger', or 'Down by the River'. For another great acoustic track, try 'Thrasher'.
My favorite song Neil Young sings is "Almost Cut My Hair". It is from his Crosby Stills Nash & Young days. I feel like it describes what it was like to be a young person during the cultural revolution/hippie movement during the Vietnam War time.
I so enjoy watching you discover, uncover, and share. Please check out Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young - Suite Judy Blue Eyes, Our House, You Don't Have To Cry... some have Young on them, some do not , but the harmonizing is INSANE! I truly think you'll enjoy ;)
Polo, try Neil Young and Crazy Horse and it will blow you away: Down by the River, Powderfinger and Cortez the Killer are top picks. The Live Rust Album has all.
Neil was always this type of performer, pretty fascinating to watch whether solo or with a band. The phrase in this song that always gets to me is "I know that some of you don't understand, milk blood to keep from running out." One of the saddest things I've ever witnessed....💔

Yep its about drugs. It's a horror. Neil Young has always been one of my favorites. Since CSN and Young. Glad you listened.
Neil Young is a poet and a musician. The man with the ethereal voice that sings about some of the darkest subjects. Great reaction.

I fell in love with Young when I was in high school and got the album After the Goldrush. I loved him with Cosby Stills and Nash-album Deja Vu is incredible. Love him in all the annual Farm Aid fundraisers with Willie Nelson. But I
Iove him best when I get to watch him rock out playing his guitar.
And Ohio.
Oh yeah, Cowgirl in the Sand is awesome
I had the privilege of seeing Neil Young and Crazy Horse live in 1976. The set was Neil Young, banjo, acoustic guitar, harmonica. The 2nd set was Neil Young & Crazy Horse. They blew it up! I was 16 years old and still my favorite concert and I've been to 100s of concerts.
One mans song, one guitar.. Nuff said!
Yes, it's about heroin addiction. I've loved this song since I was 14 years old. 🎶"I love you baby can I have some more."🎶 I've never done heroin but I've had friends that went that road. It always ends the same.
Well presented and well articulated reaction!!! Very accurate!!! Many thumbs up!!! 👏👏👏👏
thank you - discovered you today and now crying inside....memories of 70's and beyond
I've been a TOTAL Neil Young fan since WAAAY BACK in the day. He sings life in a way like no other. Brilliant artist!!
Here for some Neil Young always did love this artist..still do
Simply a genius
This song will forever be the one that makes me think of my brother. Dead of a heroin overdose two weeks before his eighteenth birthday.
What a talent, Neil Young is!
My favorite Neil young songs. One of my favorites of all time
Neil has played through the entire history of Rock and Roll. Genuine, Raw and still grounded. Top tier songwriter!
A song about his band mate who overdosed and died. Neil is unbelievable in these personal settings.
Thanks for checking out NY, he's quite amazing& I've been a fan of his for about 40+ yrs now!!❤
Btw,I AT UPDATE APPRECIATE YOUR INPUT& WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE ABOUT WHATEVER, ARTIST OR
BAND YOUR CHECKING OUT. YOU HAVE GREAT INPUT- LOVE THIS CHANNEL-THANKS, POLO👍👍🤘🤘
I've never heard a bad song from him.
👍✌️
Just found Polo. I grew up with this music. Best of the best.
He is such a talent and deep writer, just amazing I’m sure you will find so many songs to love
The grandfather of grunge💚
Yes sir
Awesome reaction, Polo. Neil is one of my all-time favorites. You need to check out "Rust Never Sleeps" You will thank the MANY people who have suggested it. 💜
My daughter died two years ago & left 2 children & me her mother 😢😢😢
The Needle and the Damage Done" is a 1972 song by Canadian-American singer-songwriter Neil Young. The lyrics describe the effects of heroin addiction on musicians Young knew, including his friend and Crazy Horse bandmate Danny Whitten, who would die of an overdose the same year the song was released.
This song hurts more each year - too many junkies, too many deaths.
ENJOY..!!
Neil Young and crazy horse was the best concert I ever went to
One of my favourites from Neil.
Marshal Tucker Band. Fire on the mountain or heard it in live song
“OLD MAN” will be the best you will hear. Please show your reaction to this Neil Young song.
Such a sad and such a beuatifull song ❤
Love Neil Young's lyrics he has an incredible connection to words. Hope you take a listen to more tunes of his like Southern Man, When You
Dance, Harvest Moon. Thank you!
harvest moon is one of my favourite of him.. try the unpluged version... so beautiful
A must listen is Neil and his band Crazy Horse, live version of "Down by the river"
It's easy to see why Young had so many problems with collaborations. He's so self-contained; nothing more is needed.
His album with Pearl Jam was surprisingly phenomenal.
He’s so amazing. He hit the feels hard!
One of the top 5 storytellers of all time!
This song is everything.
Another song I grew up with..good sounds
If you enjoyed this, check out Heart of Gold, Old Man or Like a Hurricane. 3 great songs.
Don't 4get 🎼Ohio 🎼
"Old Man" was the first he reacted to...I went and looked LoL...
Ok and Ohio was CSN&Y not Young solo.
Such a beautiful voice!! Such a dark subject! 😓😔😭
I love the fact that you can go from country to metal, I'm right there with you.
This is one of my favourite songs from Neil fabulous artist yes it is about drugs
Thanks for reacting to this one.
Polo, try Neil Young and Crazy Horse and it will blow you away: Down by the River, Powderfinger and Cortez the Killer are top picks. The Live Rust Album has all.
Heart of Gold. Crosby Stills Nash and Yound will tear your heart out .... Ohio.
Now go for some Jackson Brown. Take it easy...
Heart of Gold and Cinnamon Girl are good Neil Young songs to try
Heart of Gold
This is a tough song, but it is very accurate for addicts. I spent yrs as a drug counselor, I watched it all.
Neil is awesome song writer about addiction love from Ottawa, Canada.
Neil Young Mr. Soul is a great song. Both the regular version and the acoustic version
Neil was always this type of performer, pretty fascinating to watch whether solo or with a band. The phrase in this song that always gets to me is "I know that some of you don't understand, milk blood to keep from running out." One of the saddest things I've ever witnessed....💔
And it's sad that I've seen this sadness so many times throughout my life. So many friends I've buried. :(
One of THE great Unplugged sessions!
Another great Canadian poet musician.
Young is a great lyricist. His live performances are very intimate.
