wheelinthesky300--- Yes, the Ron Granier score a thing of genius! The metallic "bell" refrains to some of the figures were WAY ahead of it's time. There is just not one aspect of the score that is not exceptional. I have it on CD...In sequence to how it appears in the film...great driving music when you're driving at night, pretending to be Neville racing home!! Heh, I'm a bit of a grown up kid!
@jeff lockaby jeff, when I read your comment I got chill bumps. I find myself starting to watch "The Stand" or "The Omega Man" and then stop, thinking, "Why watch a film of a plague when a plague is going on right now?" Hard time to be a sci-fi or horror writer, right? I know it seems like we're bloody finished, but we're not. One thing I'm finding interesting is how this thing is burning away the "costumes" people were wearing before---"human costumes", but we now see they're strictly living on an animal level...wait, that's an insult to animals. Referring to the turds hoarding, not caring for their fellow man. Try and LAUGH...I watch a lot of Norm Macdonald...it boosts the immune system like nothing else!! And if you can MAKE someone laugh, you've done a magical and healing act. I didn't mean to go off on a side trip there, It must be SO surreal to be in L.A. and see it that way. It probably, I can only imagine, magnifies the anxiety. You might be doing this already, but I stay away from the news; their job is to string us all out on fear---bad for our immune systems. I know you didn't ask for "tips" and you probably don't need any...I'm just conversatin' and your comment got me going. Take care, jeff...you and your family will come through this just fine..
jeff lockaby agreed... I see to many 'Covidiots' out there who either are stupid or just too damn lazy to listen and prep up for this pandemic... Until they themselves are stricken with the virus, and crying for help...
@@1060michaelg Just drive around anywhere except a big city at 4am while listening to Ron's score and it's the end of the world. I have it on CD as well and it will become very valuable in the next few years. The opening sequence was great because you think he's just going out for a spring drive, and then you gradually see that he is all alone in the world. R.I.P. Ron Grainer. And Charlton Heston.
Met Heston in Georgia in 2000 at an NRA sponsored campaign appearance for Bob Barr. One VERY pleasant and gracious man who realted to all us common folk. A truly great man with honest American values and convictions. He will be missed.
This is a powerful opening sequence! We are immediately thrust into a strange world, but we discover its strangeness gradually. The initial scenes seem familiar, but then that we begin to notice the odd lack of traffic and pedestrians, which becomes odder and odder as it continues for block after block. The machine gun scene erases any remaining doubt that we are in a strange and alien reality. And then the somber theme music begins, expressing the unconsolable sadness of that strange world!
Will Smith movie is more of a ripoff, this movie is more reality now. The goons in Halloween costume's is BLM freaks at night rioting. It's fall now, we shall see what happens
Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" will always be timeless, fun and innovative. No matter the director, or the actor, the movie adaptions are always impressive and do the story justice. Vincent Price, Charlton Heston, Will Smith, all did fine portrayals of Robert. Likewise, the directors, Ubaldo Ragona, Boris Sagal and Francis Lawrence did well bringing it to screen.
The novel is a thing of wonder! Matheson gives us the science and shows, theoretically at least, how vampires could actually be possible. I read it in '74 when I was 13 and it fired my imagination. The movie, which I saw when it first came out, made me want to read the book and as awesome as the movie is (and Chuck Heston FEELS more like the Neville in the novel), the book will rock your world.
The soundtrack to this movie is so haunting it's one things I love about this movie besides the story. What can I say about the great Charlton Heston that hasn't already been said great movie just love it.
Same here, I am of the opinion that. like it's music, the decade of the 70's in film brought us an explosion of diversity and creativity in all genres. It is my humble opinion that the '70s are the Golden Age of cinema. I particularly loved the "grainy"look" that the 16 and 35 mm film gave. I have seen comments elsewhere, people actually criticizing films like "Midnight Cowboy", 'The French Connection" and even "The Sting" for their "poor quality". OUCH! We have finally arrived at a surreal crossroads where the sanitized, smooth as silk, ant-septic look to today's "films", so-called, are the new paradigm...I am thankful that I am not a young man. Who snatched the soul's and the aesthetic sensibilities of an entire generation?
Love the intro to the movie. I remember watching this with my dad when it came on TV after its theatrical run and just being amazed when Heston suddenly whips out the gun!
superb opening to a film...the first 30mins or so of The Omega Man is top notch...eerie, atmospheric and compelling...shame the film faded...still, it's far superior to I Am Legend
Ken Sturm No!!! I’d kill to have a 1966-1970 Ford, even a 4 door. We had a sky blue 1967 Custom 500 when I was little and grandparents a gold 1968 LTD. After 1970, Ford’s were pretty vanilla.
@@jondstewart Yes!!! There's plenty left for sale mint. About 15k. I had a 66XL Galaxie for 18 years, sold it due to financial issues. Are you worryed about this virus/plague getting bad again? Europe is starting it's 2nd wave now
Ken Sturm not really worried; I live in Alaska and keeping a vintage car in good condition is no problem as long as it’s in the garage October to April. Problem is our garage isn’t big enough
Actually saw this in a downtown LA Cinema, summer '71, new release. The twin Bank of America and ARCO towers were finally completed and opened in 1972.
He appears to be driving in circles around downtown LA. At the beginning of the clip he's driving south down 5th street (Arco Towers under construction) then makes a right on Flower Street. Later, in long shot, he makes the same turn onto Flower Street from 5th Street. RIP Chuck Heston.
The film was shot in PANAVISION not a cropped chopped 1:33, my good friend. By the way, Katey Sagel’s dad, Boris , directed this picture. A random comment to compliment.
I always love seeing the old WB logos that were contemporary with the film. That WB-Kinney logo is a gem. Gotta love the Saul Bass logo too; guess that was from a 70s rerelease?
There's a mistake at 1:05. There's a guy crossing the street on the right hand side, he's partially obscured in shadow, so the producers probably thought no one would notice, or missed it themselves
For me it was March 2020 having to go into the office at Crystal City to retrieve some files. Just after the beginning of the COVID lockdowns. It seemed I was the only person in the city. Naturally I thought about the opening scent from the Omega Man.
This opening scene was shot on a Sunday Morning in downtown LA and they did not have to reroute or clear people out! LA at that time had so many less people.
Oh come on GangGreen... you now live in the most amazing cityplex on earth. Embrace the Seahawks and all it represents....(a Wisconsin Seattleite). A native since 1965 now on work hiatus to WI.
The sad thing is that there are parts of Detroit and Suburban Las Vegas where you could film this without having to get the residents to stay out of camera shot!
This film scared me to death as a kid. Recently bought it on DVD and its actually terrible now. Not aged well at all. Big up to the late Ron Grainer though for a top soundtrack!
A lone man driving down the deserted city streets, listening to easy listening Jazz music in a 1970 Ford convertible, wearing aviator glasses, the sun shining, the wind blowing thru his hair. Suddenly, he spies a hooded figure in a building window. Slamming the car to a halt, he whips out his mini blurp gun and sprays the window where the elusive figure once stood. "Stupid Jedi scum." he mutters to himself as he drives off down the harrowed empty streets...
Sad to be the last person on earth, how do you live like this? Go make yourself a version of the artificial intelligence known to the world in 2017. Do time travel, go back and forth, to parts of the world that were great. Have all that you want, in different times, then bring back the people that you want to spend your life with. Start humanity all over again, get it right this time.
@Spike20TRILLION Thanks for pointing that out. I saw this in the theator and several times on TV and never caught that. Seems he didn't get the press release ;-)
@LtRacjack12 Well said, Lt. This film much better on so many levels including, but not limited to, Anthony Zerbe and his chilling voice of doom broadcasts.

Only Mr Heston could pull off this cult classic. I love it. Thanks Charles Heston for all the memories.
One of the greatest openings in movie history.

The best 1971 movie for Charlton Heston. The intro soundtrack kills me inside 😄
A miracle that they managed to get such deserted streets, even taking into account that they filmed on Sunday mornings.
The music Heston listens to in his car is called "summer place".

The Omega Man soundtrack, priceless!
My dad was listening ot music on the tv and Summer Place was playing just last night. Reminded me of the Omega Man, first thing.

You can see a guy walking down the street. Its just after he puts the 8 track in at the 26 second mark.

Do you mean Stuart Grenville-Price, I ask hopefully? Yours, Stuart Grenville-Price

Not to far from what San Fran is looking like today

You all see that doode walking on the right footpath at the 1.00 mark?
There was a few that survived! Not everyone was dead. We may see this by January
