The Omega Man (Suite)

  • The Omega Man (1971) has Charlton Heston as the last man on earth after germ warfare has decimated the population. But he is not alone and wages a one man war on the mutants who carry the plague. These mutants are lead by a zealot (Anthony Zerbe) who wants a return to the old ways before the advances of technology and see's Heston as the only obstacle in his path.This is still the best version in my opinion and features a cracking score from Ron Grainer.

      @steve hazard Will Smith isn't near the actor, nor man, Charlton Heston was. So he has no business trying to pull off a role of such depth and weight, even if it's a campy overblown over the top version.

    “End games are always full of surprises, aren’t they?” My favorite movie. Symbolizes so many things. The Christ-like way he dies at the end giving his blood to continue life.As I get older, I realize it was the soundtrack that I actually fell in love with with many of these movies and the age I was. 1972ish? “Yep, they don’t make movies like that anymore.”

      There are numerous verbal and visual hints and clues throughout the movie that parallel a Christ like symbolic idea for Neville. Originally I just thought there was the pose in the fountain at the end. Now, every time I watch the movie I seem to notice another one. One of these days I will have to write them all down and post them somewhere.

Done for Screen Actor's Guild President Mr. Chuck Heston at the time of the filming of The Omega Man. God's grace passed this film and it will live on into infinity for sure!!!! :-)

    This was the first time that I was allowed to go to the movies (without an adult). I can still, to this day, recite the entire movie, word for word. The ending really tore me up...heroes aren't supposed to die, especially back in those days.

      You think?? My parents weren't big on parental guidance: At 6 years old, They took me with them to every movie at the drive-in theater. I still remember how life-size those football stadium lights were on the giant drive-in movie screen, when COL Neville got rescued.
      This, and Escape from NY are my two favorite movies of all time. Must be why I grew up to become a U.S. Army Intelligence Officer, then professional Survivalist (Industrialized civilization is in a state of decline, after all).

    My absolute favorite Sci-Fi movie of all time!! I saw this movie with my parents at the outdoor theater located on Hickam AFB in Hawaii when my Dad came home on leave from Vietnam in 1971. I was 7 at the time and remember drinking a medium sized Coke my Dad got for me and soon I was needing to pee as fast as I could to get back before I missed anything. When I came back my Mom filled me in on what I missed in detail.Good memories. I couldn't have asked for better parents than Bob&Marj Bowen!!!

      @glennrenfrow20 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yep , 30-06 BAR on full auto from the shoulder with no recoil ( as seen through the scope's optics ). I know Charlton Heston was a man's man , but I thought that was a bit unrealistic even back when I was 12 and saw this in the theater.
      That being said this is still one of my favorite films , much better that the original with Vincent Price and light years better that the boring remake with Will smith. And yes, of course great soundtrack.

    • @paulconnors2078
      @paulconnors2078 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The scope is not really a night scope: It's an infra-red scope that was proven deadly for users in Vietnam because it could be seen by the enemy when lit up. The Night vision scopes were safer because they gathered moon and starlight and didn't give away the user at long range the way the IR scopes did. In addition, the IR scopes were power hogs and went through batteries like melting ice cream on a hot day.

      +Glenn Renfrow Neville wasn't nearly aggressive enough. He didn't try to kill many of them with the BAR and he should have wired the area with Claymores (or their IED equivalent) prior to the Family's nightly visit.
      He does this again after escaping his crashed truck when he haphazardly sprays down the street with his submachine gun as he walks back to his house.

    You know, I got to see Charlton Heston in person, in 2000, at an NRA rally. I just got a glimpse because when he took the stage so many hands went up, even though I was close to the front, he was completely blocked out. I feel blessed to have been a member when he was President and to have seen him.

Big fans of the president of the NRA, in his gun nuttiest movie, never heard of it, and not interested. Something nefarious going on there. The truth has a logic, and so do lies. Where did you get the soundtrack? I always loved it...from pleasant to scary and back again. My brother and I went to see the film in the theatre in '71 because we saw the trailer on TV and thought it was more about motorcycles because of that one quick jump over the bug,,, I was 7 and he was 11. Of course I have it of DVD now but there's something about when comes on TV...it's more fun to watch.

    Hi Brian, I love the soundtrack to Omega Man! I recently saw "The last man on earth" starring Vincent Price which is what Omega Man was patterned after. It's amazing how close the two movies are. However, I would have to say I like Omega Man more. It's tough to beat Charlton Heston in anything and his version has a certain quality to it. Plus the great music. You just hate to see him die at the end. Thanks much for posting. Hope all is well with you and your family. Warm regards, Norm

      Actually, the author Richard Matheson wrote the book as a vampire epidemic but the movie was made differently because of audience marketing purposes.

    my favorite part is near the start when he says at the chess table to cesar "you know you used to be a nice guy once" then just like the" citizen cane movie" the camera pulls out the window to show just how alone he really is, only light on in the darkness.... then that glorious morning music starts the day......"keep going theme"

    Music in stereo. Cool. I have the DVD and I think the music is in mono. I've been obsessed with this movie since they showed it at our high school. 1979, I think.

    This is one of those post holocaust movies that gets it right in a hollywood way. I think the most bleak post holocaust movie I have ever seen is the Road with Viggo Mortensen that thing was seriously depressing. The music from OM was one of those scores that just elevates the movie to another level. I was noting to someone else that it really captures that 70's sound. Grainer was a master of synth, horns, guitar and strings. I love the Prisoner music as well.

    I was 12 when this came out and it's always been one of my favorites....Now, more so because I can see how it was influenced by the times. The Manson family was on trial, Nixon was getting ready to make a deal for everyone to stop germ warfare experiments, a thousand sheep were poisoned by the accidental release of nerve gas which would have been an accidental release into Salt Lake City if the wind had been blowing the other way...It was almost topical. Not as bleak as "the last man on earth"

    Was too young to see this when it hit the theaters, but do recall seeing it several times when it hit network TV a few years later. (I now own the dvd).
    A memorable film & a superb soundtrack. Grainer's contrasting musical themes evoke a real pathos. One of the recurring themes strikes me as a funeral dirge (for all of mankind). -- In that sense, the score is somewhat reminiscent to use of "Waltzing Matilda" in "On the Beach".
    "The Family" does seem a bit tame though vs. vampires.

    • @markcastelletti483
      @markcastelletti483 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Family seem more realistic than vampires though. If a world wide apocalypse occurred, then The Family would make more sense.

      Something to keep in mind is that this was fresh off the heels of the Manson Family murders, which was a familial, commune cult with strange ass practices. Frankly, there are probably more like them out there and the moment civilization crashes, they would go publically and become warlords like we see here. Hell, some might even be fundie or Greenie types similar to Mathias and his lot.

    Thank you, Valdez. This was one of many great Drive In fllicks my young parents took me to, and as part of the 60's-70's counter-culture period, rates a special place in my memory. Planet of the Apes and Soylent Green, as well.
    The soundtrack to this was special. Also love the part (not here?) where Chuck says, "It's getting dark, they'll be in through the garage", generator down in his apartment. The "Bum-bum-ba-da-dada dump (boomp-Bah!)", music.

    It appears that the Omega Man was some sort of hybrid being a little bit susceptible to the light, but not as much as a family, as I notice he has to wear sunglasses during the day.
    The Quiet Storm music is hauntingly elegant
