    Short songs are very common amongst western girl groups currently so I’m not surprised KASTEYE went this route. Also anyone questioning why they performed at KCON or made TikTok’s with idol groups needs to start thinking logically 😂 Promotional activities in the western market are far and few between. Most promotional activity to western artists are tours and festivals none of which a newly debuted girl group can or should participate in… K-Pop has a new promotional event/concert every week in which the artists perform usually 1 to 3 songs. The benefit of being signed to a K-pop label is that you can become a K-pop adjacent artist which will ultimately prove valuable due to how much you can promote and the community involved. NewJeans is the biggest girl group to debut this decade largely due to how good their music is and the community K-pop has garnered. Imagine if they were signed to a US label and had global promotions they’d be unstoppable. Bring in KATSEYE a global girl group who is tied to both a US label and K-Pop label. They can do what most K-pop groups fail to do which is have proper western as well as Asian promotions. They get the K-Pop benefits without being tagged with the label. Ultimately I think KATSEYE will be very big and I’m excited to see them soar and grow.

    Kcon LA is still a better promo than Korean music shows (I'm talking about pre debut vcha). Because it is still kpop community in west. That's their target audience at first. Then they aim to grow to general music listeners there. I think this is what they intend to be

      I mean VCHA's debut stage got a lot of attention though and their numbers up until this point are better than Katseye. Although Katseye is more "cool" (not like the other girls if you will), has the Hybe pull and not that many minors. Maybe they did wait too long after DA.
      I'm still waiting for VCHA to come back but imo they could benefit from these events too or again maybe even promote on music shows. They can also show their live singing much better. Especially JYPE groups have proven to be successful in other countries like NiziU or Twice Misamo. And Kaylee, 13 or not, was the golden maknae. Not that I like it but she could've been like Seoweon from UNIS. But with her being on hiatus anyway, Lollapalooza canceled and no news, let's just see if JYPE has any plans for them😂

      @nonamenosurname6127 they did post on Savannah's birthday last week and I'm not too worried after that. Obviously it's impossible to speculate what happened, some people have more reasonable ideas like that they weren't ready for Lolla or just on a summer break but we'll never know. They did have a busy year and been working non-stop since A2K so that's fine so far and in the end they're a western group. Katseye was silent for half a year before debut apart from a few TH-cam videos. It's unfortunate but I think they're prepping for a physical album, after Katseye so they don't get directly compared (VCHA is great imo but their own fans don't like their music and the whole "they need to be more mature" notion feels misogynistic to me). Maybe they do wanna rework their sound but I hope they keep their Disney pop bc if not they're gonna be in direct competition to Katseye and the members are too young for a cool sound.
      Anyway I think we'll hear more in a few weeks, Savannah's sister tweeting that Savannah is not with her and other friends saying they are working again. Maybe even Kaylee. More importantly JYPE just registered trademarks for VCHA products which makes fans speculate that they'll bring out merch or an album.

    After the success of Fifty Fifty I can't name a Kpop group not making music for TikTok - and even the ones who don't explicitly do so always seem to have a "pushed" bside track targeting that demographic (Think Aespa Armageddon+Supernova or Lesserrafim Unforgiven+Eve). I can't say I'm surprised as even western labels have been openly called out by their artists for not letting them release projects unless they have a single/pre-release perform good numbers on TikTok.

    • @lxncexzs
      @lxncexzs หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      supernova is a title track tho! + i dont think that it is one of those tracks that are specifically made to be “easy-listening, digestable, tiktok music..”
      BUT i still agree that sm is pushing aespa’s bsides for that kind of sound. Their past 4 releases have not been cohesive in the sense that in the first few tracks you’ll hear aespa’s signature sound but then the next tracks will immediately take away from that sound and have a more “digestable” kind of style if that makes sense. Think Armageddon: from supernova the 1st track up to the 5th track licorice, aespa’s sound is very prominent but the next tracks after that completely steer away from it. It’s just sooo frustrating to me because from their debut up to their first EP savage, they have successfully established their own hyperpop/electronic music sound which in my own opinion haven’t been much explored in kpop except for maybe f(x) and billlie. It’s not like people disliked it anyway, next level and savage were hits in korea and earned them so much achievements just for them to feed into what’s popular nowadays..

    Also touch is a good step forward but I think their songs being so extremely short is hurting them. they should really be over 2:30 at least so they feel more complete (preferrably also have a bridge), bc looking at the US spotify top 200 most it averages closer to 3 min per song. plus the bridges are what go viral on tiktok sometimes (like "good luck babe" 's bridge)

    In all seriousness, outside of short run-time, it was a genuinely good song imo. The written word can have as much or as little depth as wanted and in the end, it kind of shows how some listeners can be out of touch (Ha) with a song passing it off as "Tiktok noise."
    I love a good Taylor Swift Lyricism moment that takes four thesauruses, a month of brainstorming, a fluency in latin, and utilizes every form of figurative language to say "I went to the store for a bag of bread." But sometimes I am also perfectly fine with a song telling me almost verbatim, "Yeah I was into you, but you're a bit too late."
    Great video, better start making a dollar jar labelled, "I sarcastically referenced shakespeare" with how much he has been talked about.

I’ve never fully deep dived into any specific groups or artists in the past twelve years. Occasionally, I’d add individual songs into my Spotify kpop playlist as if I was walking down a grocery aisle. Occasionally, I found myself curious as to a specific group (Red Velvet, LOONA, NewJeans) for one reason or another but discovered I just couldn’t fully get into them for whatever reason because that changing concepts or shifts in sound. I also, had no desire to associate myself in kpop fan group despite having several wonderful friends who are very much so. I just didn’t want to get into the highly volatile mentality I see online (and still don’t).
    It’s been 48 hours since I discovered katseye for myself and I’ve never been so invested in a group. Maybe for it’s all english lyrics (though I wouldn’t have minded Korean in songs like Touch, I think it would have added to it) or the y2k-adjacent aesthetics. Regardless, I am absolutely enamored by the talent of these girls and have gone so far as to purchase their album and some of their merch to show support. I go so far as to call myself an eyekon which is a lot for me.
    Some may not think of them as a kpop group, and I do recognize that they are and probably will always be in the production and fandom spaces as a global group. To me and probably a lot of people not super into kpop, they are the closest thing to it. I’m already going back and trying to appreciate groups and get into them outside of their individual songs.
    This is so much longer than I wanted it to be but I really appreciate the time you’ve taken to discuss katseye and since finding your channel yesterday I’ve been enjoying learning more about kpop as a whole and in its minutiae. I’m finding out where I fit as a kpop fan and your commentary and katseye are paving the way.

    I think they are trying to find a balance between what the West would like and would work in Korea too (though I think they should mainly focus on west). The new song-My way. has a Miley Cyrus "party in the USA" Vibe musically.

    the whole shakespeare bit was so awkward lmfao had me cackling. and ur vision for the first title track is rlly good, i hope they rlly get a solid like unique sound,, and it better be a 3 min song bc hybexgeffen is being stingyyy.
    i still cant bring myself to listen to their music outside of commentary tho. they should ditch scooter braun but unfortunately i dont think that'll had anytime soon... hybe loves their messy higher ups

    This is my opinion on the song: I don't like the lyrics, I don't dislike them either. They sound a little like AI lyrics to me, but that doesn't mean they're BAD. If they were the exact same but in Korean I wouldn't care, so why care now? It's a catchy song, maybe not my style, but it's comprehensible and sounds nice. Will I listen to it? Probably not. Do I accept that it's a decent song? Of course, because it is. Also, you have changed the entire way I look at lyrics honestly 😭😭thank you for these videos :>

      @@Analou13 They’ve been described as both an international group and a global group, but some kpop groups are also given those titles. I think Katseye is just doing their own thing right now and testing out the different markets with each release, which I think is a pretty smart thing to do given their label’s connection to the kpop industry

    touch i listened just to see, so it being an actual BOP was a pleasant surprise after me not liking debut for being as short as a ringtone. so i'm rooting for them. (in other news, BLACKSWAN DID A COMEBACK CHOU WE'RE WINNING. furthermore, WHERE ARE MY GIRLS VCHA?? dropped from lalapalooza, WHERE DID THEY GOOOOO. finally, will we ever see a global boy group? like im loving the girls serving cvnt but i feel like SM should've introduced another NCT subunit by now with a black dude (in my delulu verse its me) (and i mean another subunit BESIDES NCT WISH))
    furthermore, saying songs are "just a tiktok song" doesn't work unless it's like, lazily done. for example, not to be mean, but salem ilese's songs like PS5 are lazily pandering. the song isn't criminally bad, but it being popular is mostly tied to the pop culture reference of the PS5. touch is not making unabashed pop culture references, and is clearly part of the "past, present, possibilities" narrative katseye seems to be going for, which means it doing well on tiktok isn't tied to it pandering, it ties to touch being an earworm of a fucking good song with catchy lyrics, great vocals, fun dancing, and an enjoyable music video. it's like ILLIT's magnetic or moonlight sunrise in that the song is an earworm with a "charlie d'amelio would be (failing to) slay the boots house down to this choreo" energy.
    and also tiktok has weird tastes. like example, million dollar baby. love the song, it doesn't fit any of the "pandering to them gen alphas on the clock app" requirements besides being an earworm and being memorable. so honestly "just a tiktok song" doesn't really mean anything when for all we know tomorrow tiktokers could make a bach symphony the biggest song to shake dat ass to

    The way that I think about it is like, Debut is similar to UNIS Dream of Girls. And Touch is their UNIS Superwoman/Dopamine. And it's okay.

  • @MminaMaclang
    @MminaMaclang หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I think what's really interesting after your Debut lyricism critique came out is a spotlight on PPop, where groups like BINI have a song about Generalized Anxiety Disorder (Karera/race), and SB19 has a song about carrying the burden on behalf of your parents (MAPA -- means map, but also Mom/Dad), and Alamat has a song about ... *checks notes* three centuries of colonization in the Philippines (Dagundong / rumble) .
    And what's really interesting is that they couldn't survive bad lyrics because their home-genre is a songwriter-first culture. So when BINI debuted with Born To Win, nobody paid attention no matter how talented they were. It wouldn't be until I Feel Good when their lyrics actually made sense and had an emotional core that they begin to gain recognition.

    I dont get what lyric expectation do people have on pop / kpop? is catchy, fun, say some relatable feelings? it's just good enought. Simple overepetition to be catchy is a easy way out looks "lazy" yeah but can effective.
    I didnt expect to like XG's something aint right due the overrepetitive nature too, but the melody, for me, was way catchyer and the character moments more meanifull.
