    Supernova was a quirky and very bassy song. The reason I even liked the song is because I can imagine this song be used in clubs, stages, stadiums. The bigger events. It's like, their song is so so good with quality too!

    i love supernova solely because it sounds exactly like something from a playstation 1 or 2 demo disc as a massive gamer nerd, that’s the kind of music i want to hear more of. all aespa needs now is to keep this up and maybe get hideo kojima on MV production + editing.
    your f(x) comparisons are right on the money. it’s ironic how much SM tries to distance themselves as a company from them when they’re literally the blueprint for all of their future experimental releases.

    I remember when everything was going down internally in SM last year, people were worried whether aespa could have maintained their musical identity, group concept, and lore with Lee Soo Man stepping away from directly supervising production (as he had a key role in forming aespa and their universe, and curated a lot of their earlier music). Supernova has firmly solidified that aespa can be and is just as successful as they were before (if not even more).

    NU ABO mentioned!!! ❤ I always find it interesting how popular reception of a song and idols’ personal preferences clash. I know the aespa members mentioned how they preferred Armageddon. I personally like Supernova more (by a long way). In your description of how structurally Supernova resembles a supernova, f(x)’s Jet structure also remind me of a take off
    I also think the lyrics ‘where do we come from/ tell me tell me’ can be a very powerful line for people in diaspora community, as a sentiment to reaffirm their roots

    They definitely tuned the idea of a supernova and used it in everything. From the song itself down to the premise of the music video’s story. If 2023 was the time of chill sounds, uniforms and bikes, 2024 is the year of maximal instrumentals and crazy music videos. Show me a man in a hole playing a flute when the sound is a clarinet, give me a group of magical girls fighting with another set of evil magical girls to protect a wand, show me Winter spinning around an antennae before launching herself or Ningning setting an apartment on fire.

    Can't people and producers understand K-Pop was K-Pop because of this? Idk but with Supernova being an explosive song and Armageddon making Hollywood jealous with its aesthetic, it just proves aespa and the production team is totally unstoppable. If aespa doesn't win a daesang (they need a grammy tbh but who cares about awards), it means people are deaf. aespa is K-Pop, not some generic 2 minute TikTok bop.

  • @Mimikyu_8

    I feel so validated with Supernova. I've always loved how SM has always been experimental, maximalist, fun and quirky with a lot of their songs and they don't just limit themselves to one formula that does well. And I think that's in part because they commit to having groups with strong and diverse vocal talent that you can play with more when making the songs.
    (Also I don't want to make it sound like I'm one of those people complaining "why can't kpop idols sing anymore" bc I don't think they necessarily have to be good singers to be an idol bc being an idol is much more than that and we've had plenty of famous idols who aren't the best singers. But I do think by not focusing more on vocals or taking it less into account has led to the decline in the quality of songs or what creators can do with the music. I feel like companies now focus on a safe box that they can market well for profit rather than trying to create art. )
    Lol I will shamelessly admit I'm a Sticker lover. And that's mostly bc I didn't like the song at first but after listening to it over and over I just really love the vocals especially when Taeil is singing his heart out like the rent is due. Tbh I feel like most NCT songs are kind of weird and experiemental and kpop fans just act like the ones with the most mainstream cohesion aren't weird and are typically good kpop songs and look at you weird if you like the more than typical experiemental songs even though they all kind of sit in the same space. But that's my own personal tangent.
    But yeah I feel validated bc I liked Black Mamba and thought it was a good debut for them. And then I loved Next Level. But then I didn't love Savage. I half loved it at first but then stopped liking it. I loved the vocals but personally I didn't like how SM was in this period of focusing so hard on building the universe of Kwanga and the digital avatars so much with some of their groups at the time especially with Aespa. I feel like it was more following a popular trend than just sticking to make good art solely for the group and having a more personal concept just for aespa. Lol and then I just forget about Girls. I warmed up to Spicy over time. But yeah I really didn't like I how I felt like I needed an encylopedia and to do research to understand the references in half of the songs they sang. It made the song resonate less with me and it didn't feel like just making music for people to just enjoy.
    And after that I was always like if they did less of the Kwanga lore and the digital avatar personas or softened the concept a bit then I feel like they'd be amazing in the current world of kpop. So when Drama came out I wasn't in a rush to listen but then I came back to it months later to how it was. And I was so filled it joy and I loved it so much that it quickly became one of my most listened songs in 2023 in a short period of time and is still on my repeat Spotify playlist.
    I was like "Finally!" bc they were doing what I thought would make them and their music as good as I thought they could be. There wasn't a bunch of universe references anymore but the concept of them fighting an other wordly enemy is still kind of intact but more subtle or represented differently and I kind of like that now. I was apprehensive when Supernova came out bc I was still in the waiting period of thinking things could go back to how they were before. But then it just blew me out of the water and now I can feel confident in saying aespa is one of my favorite kpop groups. Both aespa and SM are now simply doing what they're really good at doing without trying to add so much more that I felt was taking away from their potential.

      You’re so right, SM is keeping the maximalism that used to represent Kpop. When non kpop-fans used to react to old kpop songs back then, they were like “wtf did I watched”
      That’s it! Kpop used to be “weird” yet catchy. I miss it

    i love the comparison of f(x) to aespa, because ive always felt like aespa was a 'continuation' and expanding upon f(x)s sound/style, like theyre the 4th gen version of them. im glad sm is actually promoting them and leaning heavily into this experimental style for once instead of playing it safe

  • @SMAnthonyW
    @SMAnthonyW 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    As a long-time Kpop fan, I feel like aespa in some ways carried on the torch from f(x). Obviously they are very different groups, but both are very experimental (in both music and concept) and the members of both groups were sort of the "leftover" trainees at the time in the company. An unlikely combination of very different members that somehow just click. SM seems to alternate between traditional and experimental girl groups - SNSD --> f(x) --> Red Velvet --> aespa. And the next SM girl group according to rumours is also the more traditional girl group similar to SNSD. I think SM genuinely didn't expect aespa to hit as big as they did, and in a way, I feel vindicated as an f(x) fan.

    What I find most awesome about Supernova is that it really makes you picture some kind of weird story behind it - for me, it vividly gives the idea of 4 girl like beings with superpowers that came to Earth to not necesarily help people using those powers but rather do some random shit with them and have fun. The unreal Karina visual at the beginning combined with Winter 우린 어디서 왔나 (you wondering where we came from?) really adds to that. I also like the sequence showing their front faces quickly making them look identical as if they are not human but rather their own kind. I want to get more of Supernova.

    Supernova actually has a important place in aespa’s S2 Lore too (especially in correlation to Armageddon) Bookish theories has some really nice breakdowns. We also won’t really be hearing much from kwangya now. Really really nice video choujimi! Supernova is just remarkable. I guess supernova was an actual supernova in terms of scale and impact on Kpop lol.

    I think a huge huge part of the success of supernova is how it has elements from SM's top 2nd gen songs. Its going back to the roots of many iconic hits with certain elements of the song. I think it also being experimental and them fully committing to the concept has done wonders for it. There are many experimental songs released these days that become generic just because they don't fully commit to making a statement

    Great song, great album! The only thing that irritates me a bit is how "split in half" it is in regards to style and theme. Still, all great songs in their own regard.

      i think armageddon should’ve been a single album (with it and supernova only) while the rest of the songs were relegated to a summer-themed mini album. sure, it would’ve delayed a full album release, but maybe then we would’ve gotten b-sides that felt in line with the theme.

    • @raytsh
      @raytsh 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@noahfan2719 I think songs 1-5 fit well on a mini album together, they seem cohesive enough. Everything from Bahama onward would have been great on a summer themed mini album, agreed. So, split right in the middle.

    3:20 That also reflects on the song structure as well. It starts relatively subdued until we hit the first chorus. Then something is added into the instrumental of the subsequent chorus. We then get to bridge, building expectation and then boom! the dance break starts as if the song has shrinked instead but the dance break keeps gaining momentum until we hit the last chorus, which feels like a explosion or the supernova itself.
    It's a very cool visualization of the concept of the song. Dem Jointz is an expert in doing these type of dynamic, layered and conceptual instrumentals and musical productions, so having him here was the right call
    (I'm surprised he hasn't produced for aespa before. I hope we get more of his production in future aespa releases, because Supernova proves that they have great synergy together)

    I think that along with everything else that was mentioned in the video, the fact that they'd just released Drama right before it might've raised some expectations because Drama was insanely successful and just such a good song too. A bit unrelated but when I first heard they'd be releasing a full album, I was slightly disappointed because it seemed like after every aespa song I really liked we got one that I didn't personally lmao (for example, loved Savage but it took a damn minute for me to enjoy Girls). Then I listened to Supernova and was absolutely 😨because it was SO much better than I'd expected and I loved Armageddon too. Then I listened to the whole album and was extremely surprised to find that I liked everything there. Top 2 K-pop album for me, right after INVU by Taeyeon and why did this comment become just an Armageddon appreciation post what

    I remember when this initially got mixed reactions when it first came out. I loved it from the first time I heard it because it felt like this was the one, the turning point that would make aespa upgrade from a bad ass rookie group, to a seasoned veteran/sunbaenim. It really felt like they’ve turned a new leaf ever since Drama, but Supernova just cemented their icon status for me. They seemed more confident too, there was a change in their stage presence, they just overall seemed like a more senior group. I imagined this playing in clubs or even seeing drag queens performing to this. It’s just a fun song overall and it’s so addicting.

    not to sound like a company stan but you can always tell when there is a lot of thought put into comebacks and the discography as a whole which makes stanning sm groups generally more enjoyable. whichever team is in charge of concepts/creative direction and choosing the songs is really smart. supernova will probably be soty (either that or magnetic).

    There are many people with similar sentiments to this , but supernova single handedly made me love kpop again after falling out of love with it. Its pretty much the embodiment of kpop at its peak - a bit weird, wacky, extra and experimental but still with artistry imbued in it which really stands out in an era of heavily westernized mellow songs (Which I do think are great, but they feel heavily different from what I grew up with and a maybe bit tired when the releases slowly sound the same). I love aespa sm for it
