RUSHCLIFFE PARISH #27: CAR COLSTON
Car Colston - “Kolr’s Farm with a Church”
This week in Rushcliffe we’re taking on another village that’s no stranger to money, but its nothing like what we encountered last time out in Scarrington. This is Car Colston, a village which can be defined in two ways. First of all, you have the actual village itself, the main cluster if you will, which is all based around Spring Lane. That’s where the church, the village hall and several other notable landmarks can be found.
However there is a second part to Car Colston, and that’s the area to the immediate South of the main cluster. That section includes not just one, but two commons - one that measures 16 and a half acres, the other 5 and a half. They are alternatively known as the Large Green and the Little Green, with the bigger of the two claiming the title of the largest village green in England. Nether Heyford would disagree as we know, but its worth talking about!
Car Colston has quite a few other bits to interest the visitor. The cricket club and the Royal Oak pub are the obvious ones, but if you dig a bit deeper here you can fin much more. Inside the church for example, is a stone coffin which we’ll take a look at, and south of the commons there’s an array of earthworks - a visual clue to a bygone time in this part of Nottinghamshire.
