I always chuckle when I hear my fellow Americans talk about historic buildings, usually a bit over 100 years old, and then see houses in UK, France, Italy, even Belgium, that are 500, 600, 700 years old and still inhabited ! Your videos are fabulous ! Thanks for sharing.
When we were new imigrants to Oz I think it was Sydney that was celebrating 200 years. I had a letter from my Mum in UK and the Stamp on the envelope was celebrating York 2000 years. It made me laugh.
Hehe yeah I live in a 15th century Grade II listed possibly older timber framed cottage , and I always think the same when I hear people talking about Victorian houses and how old they are! Same with grave stones !
@garethmathew69Indeed there are, but there are very few existing buildings from the Seventeenth century in America, to be honest. I live in a house from 1590, for example. It's a house, tourists take photos, I only notice the age when I bang my head on door frames, or the oli slides to one side of the frying pan. Lol, Yes! America is the best! But maybe your annoyance that other countries have "lovelier things" or something else you don't have... comes from your British roots and sense of universal domination, superiority and entitlement??? ❤
My property is built on the Rye wall, William the conqueror era so over 1000 years old! Other parts of the building are newer 4-500 years old has an actual brace in the lounge!
When wandering with my cousin Sandra RIP around the church in the middle of the road on Cowen St Gawler South Australia we were kindly invited up to see the bells , it was unexpected and special .
I recently learned that some of my mother's ancestors lived in England as far back as 900 A.D., and that one was the mayor of Liverpool and a member of Parliament. Your videos have inspired me to plan a UK trip next year. Thank you.
It's amazing what history a family name can have if you can search back in time. I bet you were very surprised! Thank you so much for the super thanks. Your support is really appreciated. I hope you get your trip planned!
Personally speaking, i would very much love to spend my entire life in that gorgeous town, and i know i won't be bored at all. Thank you guys for sharing this beauty with us.
You always do a beautiful video. Didn't see, though, the house E. F. Benson lived in, nor the house with the crooked chimney, nor a mention of Mapp and Lucia, but even so, it was lovely to be back thee again. Thanks, Jane, Philadelpha
Thanks for the memories! Got taken there and stayed at the Mermaid 🧜♀️ for my 50th. Our room was on the top floor. On the way up there the first time up many higgledee piggledee stairs; I stopped to catch my breath. I looked to my left as something caught my eye. It was a life size portrait of Queen Elizabeth the 1st looking right back at me. I wasn’t entirely sure it was just a painting for a few seconds; nearly fainted! 😆 Rye is just beautiful!
Haha what lovely memories, we would also like to stay there one day. Looks amazing and just our cup of tea! If we do stay and see the painting, I will remember your tale 😊
Thank you , the bitts of history really nice along with all the amazing architecture . To think this was a busiling sea town at one time with smugglers too . I really liked hearing the natural sounds , the seabirds and just people . Well done thank you .
We are lucky to live only 6 miles from Rye(We are near Paul McCartney)even in the tourist season, nothing can dim the charm of Rye. The Waterworks in this video is as follows:~ Housed in a building dating from 1718, this was originally the town's waterworks, later a soup kitchen, a public toilet, an antique shop and from May 2018, the area's first micropub.
When I was a young boy our family visited Rye in 1968 and I remember visiting the Mermaid Inn. Once we return back to California, in school I had written a report about my trip to England and especially about Rye. In 1989 my wife and I visited Rye. I do remember walking up those steep and narrow steps at St Mary’s and being rewarded with the panoramic view that summers day. I also enjoyed seeing that reconstructed model village of Rye from the 1830s there at the visitor center. I really enjoyed this video you made of Rye especially the background sound of the town when you were filming. Now I can’t wait till our next trip back to Rye and the surrounding area
Hello Thomas thank you for sharing your memories of your trip, lovely to read. Hope you make it back soon as like us I am sure you will never tire of the scenery. All the best.
Thank you for this lovely visit to Rye, a town I visited in the 1980s and enjoyed it very much. The Mermaid Inn looks much as it did when I was there. It was a pleasure to hear the seagulls crying throughout the town.
Thank you Victor, i guess that means you need to head back for another visit 😊 I hope we captured most things, I am sure there is more. So many nooks and side streets to explore.
Gorgeous! Funny when you walk down the alley I can’t help think I wouldn’t want to move a fridge there. Each time I see a beach I look for waves. Because I like to use my boogie board. Looks a bit rocky looks nice! I would love at the stay at the Mermaid inn !
I keep thinking about the Mermaid Inn, we will have to book a night and head back for the experience! Yes some of the lanes are quite tight, a fridge, a sofa, must be a nightmare! 😂😊
my grandfather Fred Tillman was born in West Street just around the corner from the Mermaid, the family were Rye Harbour fishermen and also manned the lifeboat Mary Stanford which went down all hands 1928. The family have lived fished and farmed in the area since Anglo Saxon times and although I only live a few miles from Rye I haven't been for nearly twenty years so I loved your walk around and all the info some of which I had forgotten.
OMG. What a view. Stunning I could look at that view all day. From UK 🇬🇧👍👍 nice one. I could be related to John fletcher that'll be neat. Geniolog to deficult for me to work out.
A private residence built in 1263, still occupied, boggles the imagination and is wonderful to think on. I was in Rye as a kid, 45 or so years ago, it was lovely. Thank you for this, your new subscriber : )
What a perfectly adorable town that hasn't gotten all touristy, so feels more like going back in time! Loved how many buildings you showed us, along with charming details. The music combine d with natural sounds, was quite lovely. When you were up in the church tower, I was so hoping we were going to be able to hear the bells and was not disappointed! Another excellent video! Thanks so much.
Hi Nancy, the town is very popular, we were there on a Tuesday so quieter. Did that so you see more of the buildings without lots of people around. The weekends especially in summer will be busy with visitors. We timed the walk up the tower to be on top for 12 noon just didn’t want to be in the bell tower for the rings so we could hear for the rest of the day haha. It was delightful.
We visited a few years ago by train from Eastbourne. Rye is on the same line as Hastings which probably draws more tourist crowds. This video brings back some lovely memories.
I was born in the village of Playden on the edge of Rye, yes its very touristy, packed all summer full of tourists full of touristy shops shops, no proper shops anymore.
Rye is one of the most touristy places in East Sussex, where I lived for decades. Believe me, you are seeing it very quiet. I have spent Christmas and New Year's there, and it was packed with tourists. It's just that the Town Council have done an excellent job over the years in not allowing tacky commercialisation, and preserving the architecture.
We're Australian. We had 2 lovely weeks here before our Baltic cruise in 2019. We stayed at the lovely white hotel you walked past after The Gate. Such a wonderful town. It's a shame Mermaid Street was having so many repairs while you were there. Best Indian restaurant ever in Rye, and beautiful tea and cake shops too. Thanks so much for a great tour.
Thank you for sharing your memories, sounds like you have a wonderful time. Would love to spend a night visiting in the future and try out that curry house. Do you recall them name?
It was down the road from the old water works. A hotel is where the waterworks was. It was the Mahdi lounge. And they had the best icecream desert menu ever!
Hi guys. From Australia. This was my first viewing of your channel & how appropriate it was...my Moon family started off in Rye, so I got to see what this beautiful little village looked like. Edmund Moon was born in 1780 to William Moon & Mary (nee Gascoin). During my research I remembered reading about how the ocean receded away from Rye... The family moved to Rolvenden, Kent. There son Thomas Moon & Amy (nee Lawrence) then immigrated to Australia in 1839, like so many other families, to get away from the Typhus outbreak. If you guys are ever or will be up around Rolvenden, Kent; I would love to see what it looks like & hear about it's history. I really like your presentation of Rye & look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you. Cheers Carol
Hello Carol, thank you for sharing your family story. The wonderful thing is that Rye we look pretty similar now to when they lived there. Not many places you can say the same! I have notes the village of Rolvenden and if and when we are down that way we can look it up. Thanks for watching. All the best.
Love your videos always and watch them regularly like saying a daily prayer. Part of my de-stress routine at the end of a busy day but...above all love your selection of beautiful background music is simply classy. 🙏👌
Lovely to see, thank you! We'd never been to Rye before, & when we came home to England before the Pandemic, it was on our itinerary and we spent 3-nights there - went to Camber Sands, Dungeness, The Steam Railway, AMAZING Great Dixter, along with just about all the walks you showed - fortunately no sewer works at the time - there was a flower festival in St Mary's which was lovely. We actually ate at the Ypres Tower pub (we were staying under the cliff) as well as the Old Bell - really a delightful old town, I'd say you could spend a week there with plenty to explore in the town as well as 1-hr+ or so radius. Another lovely production. Can I suggest Mersea Island in Essex, as a rather unusual destination? Safe travels & thanks for sharing your talents.
Oh the dinky narrow gauge railway is such fun, been on that a few times as a kid. Must go back forgot it was so close to Rye really. Sounds like you had a great time over your 3 days. I will look your suggestion, as we have never heard if it! Thanks
@@MemorySeekers West Mersea is a bit of a time warp, really, the island is almost tidal & can get cut off, I think. There's some nice eateries & pubs, boat builders - it's not too far from Colchester, which I've not been too either, but I know is very historic, so could be a side trip to the island - it's quirky. Keep safe guys!
I have been enjoying your videos so much ! They are so well done ! Beautiful photography, pleasant music, just the right amount of narration from a well spoken host. So peaceful & relaxing to watch ! Thank you for making & sharing these videos !
What a great job you did here and I felt like I was back in magical Rye. This video, others of yours and my 28 visits to England solidify my belief that I was really supposed to have been born there - but inexplicably and sadly wasn't.
for some reason, I was much more entranced by this town than from the other towns/cities that you've visited. Maybe it was its proximity to the ocean and constant cry of the gulls. Another wonderful, wonderful video, Simon!!! Greetings from San Gabriel, CA, USA
So glad you enjoyed it. The gulls were so noisy but at the time you don’t really notice it. Maybe you are too busy with all the wonderful things to see 😊
@@MemorySeekers I honestly would think it's the charming noises of the seagulls at the background that created the natural atmosphere of your video. For me, it's music to my ears. Thank you very much for taking time to make so many beautiful videos for us 👍👏. Cheers.
@@MemorySeekers Very nice town indeed, but are you sure the seagull noises are not piped in? Because you don't see that much seagulls hanging around lol
Maybe it’s the colours of the buildings that makes Rye so attractive. Though the North of England contains many historic towns the relentless grey stone and often lack of sun can make them appear a bit depressing.
Thanks for the memories❤. One of our early trips to the UK had us spending a few days in Rye, it was so very special. It’s nearly 20 years ago, now and your lovely videos help refresh the memory. So very much appreciated! 💖👍🏻
@@MemorySeekers I am disabled and cannot walk.So tagging along with you Guys I feel like I am there with you! Thanks so much for the wonderful tours you give!
Another great tour! Look forward to the 'spotlight' video. My friend visited Rye a number of years ago, and enjoyed it very much. For those old enough to remember, Patrick McGoohan played Dr. Syn, the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh in the 1963 Disney movie. It was based on Russell Thorndike's (1915 and subsequent) stories about smugglers in and around Rye. I always love to see half-timbered buildings in such great condition. I laughed when you said the Inn was not 'original', but had been reconstructed in 1620, 'after the fire'. Here in California we only have 'Mock-Tudor' houses, built in the 1920s. :)
Because of you I literally want to go here now! It’s on my list! Watching this, too, I made the connection of Rye to my favorite author Joan Aiken. The part of your video where you talk of the smuggling gangs…. the seagulls, the narrow seaside lane… it all clicked, as I recollected colorful scenes from her books. ❤️ Thank you for your splendid exquisite travel vlogs.
The houses are amazing and beautiful. You could spend all day there just drawing and painting the town. Thank You for the tour as usual. Fantastic job showing all the buildings and homes.loved it. 👍👍👍👍👍
I've loved this town forever. I knew I'd get there. It's in my soul. Now I know I never will. Thanks for the look see. Maybe you can get back once the work is done on Mermaid Lane. Thanks again!!
Just discovered you. What fantastic videos. I have mobility problems. & I’ve always wanted to see what you are seeing. Thank you. I’ve tried doing street view. But this is so, so much better. Thank you. Superbly done.
Been to Rye twice 1985 & then in 2011 a beautiful little town, that has not changed at all. You have certainly unlocked my memories of this wonderful place. Many thanks for your fabulous educational video.
Excellent, informative tour of lovely Rye.I remember many trips to Rye and Camber Sands in the late 50's/early 60's as a kid. Thank you for your wonderful commentary and back ground noise from the seagulls.
I'm always in RYE generally as I live in Beckley (just outside rye) you've done a nice job of filming what we generally take for granted because of living here, really appreciate what you've done. Thank you.
As someone who lives here, I can confirm it's a very nice town. Sometimes it feels a bit isolated due to the lack of large brand stores, meaning you have to make do with what's present, but there is a small supermarket and some very pleasant places to dine at. The history preserved here is definitely my favourite part of it, I'm glad there's no McDonalds or KFC or anything and that most of the stores are family-run, it feels very down to earth and communal and there's less litter this way. Hastings is also a nice place to go when you want more to see, just a train ride away.
Another great video - thank you very much. I vaguely remember Camber Sands from visiting as a small child - we had an old Austin 7 car & my dad knew all these places from his youth ! We lived in West Hampstead in London at the time. I'm 82 now lived in US for 40 years, but still enjoy watching these TH-cam videos of UK places I will not be able to visit now ! This little town of Rye is very interesting & historic, I had no idea !
Glad we stirred the memories of your time in the area with the family. It was our first time in Rye and as surprised as you about the history and beauty of the places. Glad you enjoyed the tour. All the best.
Hello again ~ if not ~ many thanks for taking me along! Your videos capture so much....from the narrative, to the music you choose, it all fits! 👍 Keep them coming ~ Peace and Love, 🍻 ❤🥰
I have traveled the world and watched many travel logs. This gentleman’s works is wonderful. Packed full of info about what you are looking at and hints that will be very useful when you travel. Thank you to MemorySeekers!
Love it!! We went there in 2012 and made the mistake that there would be baggage check at the train station. Lucky we had a wonderful local who told us to go to the travel agent where we could store our bags. SO grateful to this day!
Excellent! Didn't know about the Baroque side and the extensive gardens. Am visiting friends in England this summer and, having seen SO many films about Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey, this is a definitely a part of my London plans this time! Can't wait!
As usual this was very enjoyable. Your music choices were great. I look forward to your videos wherever you choose to travel as i am mainly an armchair traveler and the places you show may not even be places i would know about. I learn a bit too which is always nice as we age. Safe travels and God bless.
Thank you Angela for the lovely comment. So pleased you like the music it is so hard to get the right piece, it sometimes takes up more time than the research! 😀😊
Yet another beautiful part of England, and typically quirky, not boring by any stretch of the imagination! A pity about the closed street 😕. Interesting, if rather dark history. Thank you again for your wonderful work. Looking forward to seeing more videos from you!
There are some excellent art shops in Rye too, including the Rye Art Gallery (local artists) on High Street. There are also some pretty good eateries in the town including the Mermaid where the Ploughman's is to die for, and Layla Turkish on the High Street. Rye is one of my favourite towns in southern England; read the geography and the history and you will be entranced too.
Oh a walking tour, I’m not sure I would be any good at that 😃. Haha Gosh I don’t think I could remember all the facts and stories live… one to ponder though. 🧐☺️
I love the sounds of the seabirds.
They were very noisy but it is a lovely sound at the coast.
Looking forward to visiting Rye in May of 2023. Thanks for this helpful pre-tour!
Ah, have fun such a lovely place.

There's some nice eateries & pubs, boat builders - it's not too far from Colchester, which I've not been too either, but I know is very historic, so could be a side trip to the island - it's quirky. Keep safe guys!
Sounds interesting! 😊
I loved this video with the old streets and roads. It’s amazing.
Glad you liked it. We have lots more. th-cam.com/video/ihD7x-3ttMc/w-d-xo.html this is Sandwich not far from Rye. Maybe try that one next! ☺
Aww once again just what I needed. Thank you for the lovely visit. Blessings
Glad you liked it 😊
Love the music you select
Thank you we try hard to get the right tunes 😀
Always wanted to go there. Can’t wait to see it with you guys
I have been enjoying your videos so much ! They are so well done ! Beautiful photography, pleasant music, just the right amount of narration from a well spoken host. So peaceful & relaxing to watch ! Thank you for making & sharing these videos !
Thank you so much for your kind words. ☺
What a lovely town/village. The history is amazing. You always do such a great job. Thank you Memory Seekers.
Thank you for watching as always.
What a great job you did here and I felt like I was back in magical Rye. This video, others of yours and my 28 visits to England solidify my belief that I was really supposed to have been born there - but inexplicably and sadly wasn't.
Ah thanks glad you enjoyed it. 28 trips to England wow 😯 😊 are you planning to come again soon?
Maybe a past life? 28 times! Sounds like should move there, no? If possible.
for some reason, I was much more entranced by this town than from the other towns/cities that you've visited.
You see them when we are on the roof of the church, they are all over and very noisy.
Maybe it’s the colours of the buildings that makes Rye so attractive. Though the North of England contains many historic towns the relentless grey stone and often lack of sun can make them appear a bit depressing.
A very nice trip. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
We are new subscribers from New Zealand. Loving your videos, what a beautiful country the UK is, so much history and the old buildings are amazing.
Hello welcome, thanks for joining us. Hope you enjoy some of the other videos, lots to catch up on! 😊
Sorry to say, it isn't all like this : /
Thanks for the memories❤. One of our early trips to the UK had us spending a few days in Rye, it was so very special. It’s nearly 20 years ago, now and your lovely videos help refresh the memory. So very much appreciated! 💖👍🏻
You sure visit some beautiful places! So much history.Thank you for taking us along with you!
You are very welcome, we have great fun visiting them sharing with you.
Your videos make me want to travel back to England and explore new old places.
Well we hope at some point you can! Do it! 😊☺️
According to locals, the "Tudor" house at 22:22 was indeed built in the late 1950s. It has quite unusual wooden rain gutters.
Thank you. I have very fond memories of the town and the delicious Mushroom soup at the Mermaid inn😋
Would love to stay and eat there!
So glad you enjoyed it. I believe she was born in Rye having looked it up. Hope you make there to enjoy the surroundings.
Lovely town! Thank you for sharing this memory❤️
Our pleasure 😊
Thanks for showing us this beautiful town, you did a great job.
We just came back from a visit to England, including a day in Rye. Thanks of recapturing this fascinating town!
Glad you were able to fit in a visit Jeff, you cannot bet seeing it first hand!
The houses are amazing and beautiful. You could spend all day there just drawing and painting the town. Thank You for the tour as usual. Fantastic job showing all the buildings and homes.loved it. 👍👍👍👍👍
Oh yes I imagine many people go to draw and paint in the area just like writers have been going for inspiration for any years!
Great video, I loved every minute of it. Thanks a lot!
So glad you liked it. 😊
Another wonderful video. You're giving us even more reasons to return to the UK!
Hope you make it back soon!
This is wonderful! We were in Rye for an afternoon and missed so much. Now we've seen it. Thanks! Love the music too.
Glad you have a good time and we filled in some gaps. 😊
I've loved this town forever. I knew I'd get there. It's in my soul. Now I know I never will. Thanks for the look see. Maybe you can get back once the work is done on Mermaid Lane. Thanks again!!
Why will you never get there?
Thank you very much for this wonderful tour.
Our pleasure 😊
Another wonderful movie!
Those little old towns are so beautiful.
Thank you.
We are so lucky to have many of them in the U.K. thanks for watching.
Stunning tour
Glad you enjoyed it
Just discovered you. What fantastic videos. I have mobility problems. & I’ve always wanted to see what you are seeing. Thank you. I’ve tried doing street view. But this is so, so much better. Thank you. Superbly done.
Welcome, so glad we can share these places with you. I hope you get much joy from our videos.
Glorious
What a lovely, charming town! Thank you for showing us around.
Our pleasure 😊
🥰 Thank you. A most beautiful little town
😊
I lived in a village just outside Rye. Went for tea and scones at Simon the Piemans, up by the church every Friday with my mum. Happy memories!!!
It does look like a very nice cafe! Glad we stirred the memories 😊
Been to Rye twice 1985 & then in 2011 a beautiful little town, that has not changed at all. You have certainly unlocked my memories of this wonderful place. Many thanks for your fabulous educational video.
What a beautiful little town! Love all the Tudor style houses. Can’t wait to go along with y’all on your next adventure. So enjoy all your videos.
Thanks for the lovely comment. 😊
What a great way to end the day, looking forward to next weeks video, goodnight. 🦘🐨🦘🐨😷
Excellent, informative tour of lovely Rye.I remember many trips to Rye and Camber Sands in the late 50's/early 60's as a kid.
Thank you for your wonderful commentary and back ground noise from the seagulls.
It probably has not changed that much since you visited. I never noticed how noisy the seagulls were until editing the video. Haha
I'm always in RYE generally as I live in Beckley (just outside rye) you've done a nice job of filming what we generally take for granted because of living here, really appreciate what you've done. Thank you.
Thank you for the lovely comment Martin. 😊
Wow!! Fantastic. The history blows my mind! Greetings from Ontario Canada
Thank you glad you enjoyed it 😊
Another great video - thank you very much.
Hello Sy & Will ~ Thanks again for sharing another quaint historical town, that I would love to visit! Maybe someday 🙋♀️🤞♥️
Thank you so glad you enjoyed it 🤞 you make it there one day.
Hello again ~ if not ~ many thanks for taking me along! Your videos capture so much....from the narrative, to the music you choose, it all fits! 👍 Keep them coming ~ Peace and Love, 🍻 ❤🥰
Another of your wonderful and totally enjoyable videos. Love them.
Thank you very much!
I have traveled the world and watched many travel logs. This gentleman’s works is wonderful. Packed full of info about what you are looking at and hints that will be very useful when you travel. Thank you to MemorySeekers!
Thank you very much for the kind words. 😊
Love it!! We went there in 2012 and made the mistake that there would be baggage check at the train station. Lucky we had a wonderful local who told us to go to the travel agent where we could store our bags. SO grateful to this day!
You were lucky, I doubt that would be possible these days.
@@MemorySeekers May very well be true. I still like to believe in the heart of humanity
Excellent! Didn't know about the Baroque side and the extensive gardens. Am visiting friends in England this summer and, having seen SO many films about Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey, this is a definitely a part of my London plans this time! Can't wait!
I think you meant this for the Hampton Court video you watched first 😊
As usual this was very enjoyable.
Yes it was just our luck so much construction going on at that time but still it was a beautiful sunny early spring day and that made up for it!
Beautiful Little Town
It really is 😊
There are some excellent art shops in Rye too, including the Rye Art Gallery (local artists) on High Street. There are also some pretty good eateries in the town including the Mermaid where the Ploughman's is to die for, and Layla Turkish on the High Street.
Rye is one of my favourite towns in southern England; read the geography and the history and you will be entranced too.
Thank you for your thoughts and extra information. Would love to eat at the mermaid next time!
Piękna lekcja historii!!! Dziękuję, za piękny, interesujący film. Serdeczne pozdrowienia 👍🥰
My Uncle and Cousins live here. Its a beautiful town.
To urocze miasto z tak bogatą historią. To świetna zabawa odkrywać fakty i przeszłość, a następnie udostępniać je w filmie. wszystkiego najlepszego.
Thank you both for the wonderful tour. As always, it is very scenic and informative. Love your videos. Greetings from Germany.
Thanks for watching!
Wow magnificent and treasure trove of wowws and greatness.
Lovely video! Thank you! Can you arrange a walking tour? Would love to come out on walks with you as a tour guide :)
Lovely! I love to see this kind of video. Sadly I probably won't get to see England in person
Oh a walking tour, I’m not sure I would be any good at that 😃. Haha Gosh I don’t think I could remember all the facts and stories live… one to ponder though. 🧐☺️
@@MemorySeekers Oh don't worry about that! Catch up on all the facts whilst having a nice pub lunch! 😁😎😁
Me gusta mucho su programa , me fascina Inglaterra , saludos desde Chile .
¡Muchas gracias, es un placer saber que tenemos espectadores en Chile, un lugar que hemos visitado varias veces y que realmente amamos!
Incredible Town. The grammar school and the bank with it's oak pillars are amazing. Beautiful video as usual. Cheers.
Thank you glad you enjoyed the tour.
