You need to understand how a normal differential works first but to make it short , imagine a solid shaft between the two front wheels so they rotate as one , if there is any slip both will be slipping .. there is some give , but that's the general idea . reduces the wheel slip due to power.
Good video this time round. Anyone that owns one of these or the euro mk2 st and has remapped it would find out very fast that the turbo is a limiting factor for solid power gains. The k04 they come with is just too small to really get beyond 300-320hp fly hp, when the engine can handle 380 fly hp with standard internals. A bigger turbo would help a lot and reduce the spikiness which influences wheelspin. A bigger turbo on this car would help make up for the lack of mechanical grip of this chassis versus a fk8 ctr too, i reckon at least 350hp should be your goal
The K04 charger (when in good nick) are capable of 300hp crank. I had that stage on my S40 T5 AWD manual. It felt punchy but lacked overtaking power on the Autobahn. Your setup should do around 265hp at the crank ... so aroung 235-240hp at the wheels! Installing a boostgauge and doing some basic OBD logging of acceleration runs would help finding the issue here. You only have to remove the intake pipe over the engine and maybe the heat shield over the turbo. - Take a look at the membrane in your boost recirculation valve or divert-air valve. Best would be to get an uprated one. My recommendation is the GFB T9354. With this you can set the preload right to the point where you start to get turbo chatter on lift-off. And the best thing: This valve fits into the K16 housing. So you can migrate it when upgrading. A friend of mine lost 3psi of boost at the top end because of a ripped membrane. This is hell of a lot of boost when you consider that the K04 can only achieve 16-17psi at the top end.
It looks like you could really use an upgraded torque mount. Also, like others have said, an IC should be a top priority. Best bang for your buck is do88.

Please go custom turbo, we know you like the bolt-ons and Elevate tune but it would be really interesting to collaborate with Elevate on an alternative turbo kit and tune. The K16 is a one piece manifold/housing, pita to lug around. You could get the BW S200SX-E (S252) with ~0.90-0.95A/R, full spool 2800-3000rpm on 17lbs, 350whp on the stock intercooler, probably 370+ with the Elevate intercooler. If you want to go ball bearing and watercooled, then a GT3071R with 0.63A/R, but its $500 more, similar spool and power. I can't wait to see the Quaife LSD install, I really want to see an in depth video.
K16 way to go...very good turbo for this car. Tailofthedragon was awesome, went during #7 in my KPAX S60 GT5, definitely worth it, much to learn and see. Enjoy!

What about the trans and difs? I wouldn’t go with a bigger turbo unless I know for a fact what the safe limits are for the trans or difs, don’t want to rip thoughts apart while pulling big numbers because then You can harm your engine when/if those let go under full load pull
This is the same that happened to my ST Turbo back Tune Actuator Group A filter Made 235 BHP Then swapped out the intercooler Then made 280 BHP And 364 torque all.down to the intercooler

ShiftingLanes yeah, I think the lack of hp gain is down to the stock intake system. From the intake piping, all the way through to the IC and intake manifold. Those parts should unlock some ponies
I would say go for the 4T4 turbo from IPD, but if you don't want to go that route you could get the K24 that's on the S60R and V70R or get a upgraded K24. All of those should give you good HP and TQ numbers with minimum modifications to your exhaust and intake setup.
Which intercooler are you going to get for the car? When i Got my car ( c30 t5), it was totally stock, i then added the elevate catback and Got a custom tune. Stock: 216 HP / 324nm. Elevate catback exhaust and a custom tune : 243 HP/ 383 NM. But the intercooler was Stock, and it was clear that it was holding back the car and the potentiel power. So change the intercooler, and maybe the intake, then go again on the dyno. :)
You're coming to CTDX? Nice! I'll be there as well. Which reminds me I've got to get started designing the logo and shirts for this year's event...damnit.
The bitter sweet truth about this platform is how severely underpowered and restricted the engine is by its narrow components, only after ive gotten the entire package am i able to feel the car pull all the way through the higher RPM's, without you feel the bottle necking effect when the boost dies down around 7200rpm. I officially have more money in parts then the cars worth lmao.
jon devieon Volvo’s are usually turned for 1800 to 6500 kinda range. I agree though, my V50 with T5 falls on its face around 5 grand it feels like... where as my bigger engines Volvo’s tend to want to keep pulling and are let down by the stock tune 6500 rpm limit. And on newest Volvo’s like my V90 it feel like it could pull all way to 8 grand but it’s electronically limited to 6500rpm :(
The car is designd to perform all over the world, so it has to perform in country's where the fuel is not so good, Thats why we can do chiptuning, becouse we are having good fuel..
Yeah, horsepower is a function of torque. It's when it's multiplied by RPM. So since you aren't really revving different or anything like that you won't see huge peak gains but because your torque curve is much larger your horsepower curve will start and stay a lot higher as well but it won't necessarily make tons more horsepower since peak horsepower is usually later than peak torque.
Eleavate makes great products, but I would try Robert Hilton for tuning. He can give you more fine tuning capabilities and has tunes for no-lift shifting and anti-lag.
Also, you need the Elevate rear strut brace for structure rigidity. I also purchased a James Barone Racing .125 torsion rear anti sway bars and it is awesome for rear end stability. Upgrade the transmission torque mount, too, for better shifting. You're benchmark goal of beating a Type R is not going to be cheap, but good luck!
Short shifting wont help. Check out the gear ratios between 2nd and third. Even when the torque curve falls on its face you will have more wheel torque in 2nd than 3rd.
You should get air fuel ratios tested on the dyno. It’s great information to have when you’re at WOT. If you don’t have the right ratio throughout the run, you’re not going to get the most out of the engine.
awesome car i didnt know these were the focus RS secretly until yesterday. strange we have the same turbo but my speed 3 has a significant more top end power stock with one less cylinder, still these cars sound entirely better
The dealer volvo approved polestar engine upgrade software gives 250 bhp and 273 lb/ft the torque curves are engineered to a flat line from about 1800 to 5000 rpm .. remember these C30 engines are not the true High pressure T5 engines of old , they are Low pressure for good drivability in normal driving conditions .. The genuine Standard T5 2.4 in the bigger cars are 260 bhp 258 lbft

The car is a tank, so will never catch up to lighter FWD with similar mods, it's a nice car to drive, so just drive it. Tune is a pricy proposition without opening the flow, inlet to tips. Never regretted the noise out of my Borla tho...
Thats good power from a c30. I need R4500 zar to fix my Volvo 850 2.3L T5.... Needs rings, bearings and head gasket.... Then I'll be rolling Volvo again.. Now I'm Rollin my 99 tiburon.... I miss my volvo
Plz post your WOT dyno AFR plot. Id be interested in the timing at full throttle. Your afr can be pretty rich and timing low resulting in lower power. Also interesting that tq and hp dont converge at 5252 rpm.
If you're upgrading the turbo go for the S200SX-E (S252) 12709095019, with a 0.90-1.00A/R turbine housing. Full spool around 3k, should make 320whp, 320wtq easy on 14lbs/(1 Bar) boost, and rev to 6500rpm without choking. Plus there's plenty of headroom for way more power, and its super efficient. Journal bearing of course, but its a brand new turbo for a third of the price of a ball bearing one. Bye bye V70:)
What's the most power anyone's made in these? Lots of aftermarket tuning parts available. With all the stuff you've been doing you should easily pushing 450 by now.
Not with these motors. The stock turbo can make 325ish at the crank. Most I've heard is 550 at the crank with a built bottomed end, sleeves, cams, etc.
It might not have gained much in the top end but it must be great in the real world . I hope it is still as punchy after the bigger turbo goes on .The turbocharger your considering ,is it twin scroll
Is it possible to keep the small turbo and add a bigger turbo as well. For example the small turbo would spool up first to get the low end power and afterwards have the larger turbo spool up to have a greater power band all through the RPM?
I put bigger tires and wheels on my 2011 t5 and lost performance. I have a manual and I'm betting why my loss came from bad gear to tire ratios . Just a thought.
@@ThePentosin my experience is night and day. Not happy but it's just a quick wheel swap. I really think they should do a video about this. It's a major factor in performance.
Wouldn't the dyno read low because all 4 wheels are moving? I don't know enough about dynamometers to know but I feel like that would cause a 2WD car on that dyno to have lower than normal numbers. Maybe the technician disengaged the rear wheel sensor?
The biggest problem with these fwd Volvos is lack of exhaust flow. If people would get away from the tiny k04s and TD04s they would make alot more power reliably and not bend rods.
I'm actually about to move away from the East TN area, but I may have to come back for the Dragon meet. Its probably a bad tune or really crappy fuel... This engine is capable of AT LEAST 230hp att the dyno / stock internals. My V50 dynoed 264hp with E85 and stock everything. 239hp with 98 octane. And thats pretty standard for a Autotech S40/V50/C40 stage 1 tune here in Sweden… And yes, above 300-320(engine) hp you need a larger turbo. But this car should be at least 250hp on the dyno with a proper tune / proper fuel. It IS known 😁
do you guys measure things differently? In the UK these are 225hp at the crank, so add miles and wear, 214 would be normal, how are you getting that at the wheels?
I've seen it on other channels before too where they dino their 10 year old car and they get pretty much exactly what the factory said they did new. Some old cars even dino higher.
So in the US we will have a bit of a difference due to different engine mapping for emissions. But it really all comes down to the dyno. If we took the car another place, we’d get a different number. Another, same story. We’re using the same one each and every time to keep consistent.
@@ShiftingLanes i get that. Use the same dyno so you can guage any differences from what youbare doing. Its interesting how different markets can be offered different things. So out of interest, do you know what power you are getting at the crank? Over here we use bhp even though whp is more relevant.
Mustang dynos read notoriously high, and they're only really useful for comparing runs on the same dyno. Absolute horsepower numbers are just gibberish from them.
Does elevate give a 2 step rev limiter option do you have to send the ecu or is it a hand held tuner or laptop tune ? I’m looking into getting a S60R but I have a c30 t5 wrecked just needs suspension and body
I love you guys and I watch your videos. Keep up the good work! ...however, I’ve got to say... 1. You guys really suck at racing😁 Keep practicing 👌🏁 2. Since your hp is flat from like 5k rpm you should stay in gear to the 1 rpm before the limiter. Had it gone down after 5k rpm, yeah then you should shift. You want to stay in the hp, not the torque. A shorter ratio (lower gear) accelerates better. It’s that simple. Looking forward to a new turbo for you to deliver the boost the ECU is probably requesting.
I'm not sure about his specific case, but they are ridiculously rare in M66 form. I have been looking for one for about two years now and have yet to find one.
His car is a pre-refresh C30, there was no such thing as a Polestar C30 at this model year. The fancy one you see on Top Gear with like 500 horsepower is a prototype and they only made a handful of them. The C30 T5 w/Polestar is just an appearance package to the refreshed car and a tune on the ECU that you can install on any T5.
I stand by my opinion that you should launched in 2nd or 3rd. Don’t even dump on 1st. Volvo engine’s are towers of power for torque curves early on, just what they like to do to peak torque much sooner. The V70R wagon and S60R are going to destroy your C30 all things being as they are because physics, more power, more torque, longer torque curves... ya you have the weight advantage but they have the power and torque curve advantage. Seriously though everyone of you guys need to practice launching those Volvo’s better and faster everyone of you had very bad launches, very poor gear shift points specially with turbos. Best bit about this channel is the name
Btw, Great video and explanation on the different stuff on the car. Love your videos guys!
Enjoy!
Those wheels look super great
stock intercoolers are tiny. especially when you live in TX like me. I have a huge FMIC going in my s60 soon and I cant wait to see the results. only a 3% pressure drop and 64%more volume. should be pretty good.
i own a st225 (same engine) and when you tune it you need to change the RECIRC VALVE because the stock valve will start to leak whit high boost
Seems crazy that the turbo is that close to being maxed out at stock form
Awesome video! Can't wait for more mods!
Thank god you FINALLY SAID IT!!! BIGGER TURBO 😍
I might do the Dragon this spring.
Nice. They're going all out for the 10th edition.
What about the trans and difs? I wouldn’t go with a bigger turbo unless I know for a fact what the safe limits are for the trans or difs, don’t want to rip thoughts apart while pulling big numbers because then You can harm your engine when/if those let go under full load pull

Next level gets silly due to needing a block mod/shims injectors turbo ect
X2 on Intercooler
@@chrisbaxter5041 Block is gucci till 350 -400 Crank. As long as u dont boost past 10 PSI until 3000RPM or so you are fine. Its all down to the tune my friend.
ShiftingLanes yeah, I think the lack of hp gain is down to the stock intake system. From the intake piping, all the way through to the IC and intake manifold. Those parts should unlock some ponies
That turbo cherry on top will be fantastic, when you get there
I would say go for the 4T4 turbo from IPD, but if you don't want to go that route you could get the K24 that's on the S60R and V70R or get a upgraded K24. All of those should give you good HP and TQ numbers with minimum modifications to your exhaust and intake setup.
Cant go with those on this platform. No space between head and firewall to fit such turbos.
DO88 intercooler.
And on newest Volvo’s like my V90 it feel like it could pull all way to 8 grand but it’s electronically limited to 6500rpm :(
The car is designd to perform all over the world, so it has to perform in country's where the fuel is not so good,
Thats why we can do chiptuning, becouse we are having good fuel..
Just a problem of a very small undersized turbo. A bigger turbo and tune will fix that.
Wheels and tires do make a big difference in power. Those fifteen 52's are heavy, and the tires are wider too.
Good review 😉 the M66W of C30 is very longest gearbox, the Focus ST 225 mount a M66 much shorter than the C30. I want install this.
awesome car i didnt know these were the focus RS secretly until yesterday. strange we have the same turbo but my speed 3 has a significant more top end power stock with one less cylinder, still these cars sound entirely better
I'll be at CTD assuming all is well with my C30 at the time!
Fascinating. Well done. Pete UK
Greetings from Poland.
Glad to have just found this channel. I am a student (with limited funds) and I currently also own an 08 C30 6 speed, and I'm trying to decide if I should go with the flash tune or the exhaust. What are your thoughts? Thank you! Excited to see how this car develops.
The car is a tank, so will never catch up to lighter FWD with similar mods, it's a nice car to drive, so just drive it. Tune is a pricy proposition without opening the flow, inlet to tips. Never regretted the noise out of my Borla tho...
Best bang for your buck, SharkTune.
Thats good power from a c30. I need R4500 zar to fix my Volvo 850 2.3L T5.... Needs rings, bearings and head gasket.... Then I'll be rolling Volvo again.. Now I'm Rollin my 99 tiburon.... I miss my volvo
a better turbo and intake will give you some better gains up top. will be interesting to see the differance
Put your stock wheels and low profile tires and blow your mind I would bet.
I hope it is still as punchy after the bigger turbo goes on .The turbocharger your considering ,is it twin scroll
k16 is not twin scroll.
sweet stuff ! What tuning system are you using?
Elevate
Is it possible to keep the small turbo and add a bigger turbo as well. For example the small turbo would spool up first to get the low end power and afterwards have the larger turbo spool up to have a greater power band all through the RPM?
Yes but there is no room for it in the engine bay.
I put bigger tires and wheels on my 2011 t5 and lost performance. I have a manual and I'm betting why my loss came from bad gear to tire ratios . Just a thought.
Probably heavier wheels. Rotating mass has a big effect.
@@ThePentosin my experience is night and day. Not happy but it's just a quick wheel swap. I really think they should do a video about this. It's a major factor in performance.
dragon prep! how's that LSD? How was the difference from stock? solve your torque steer?
How do the autos go being tuned? Have one coming next week !
Finally a car youtuber who actually acts like normal human and not like these obnoxious young pricks like TJ or parker from vehicle virgins
Wouldn't the dyno read low because all 4 wheels are moving? I don't know enough about dynamometers to know but I feel like that would cause a 2WD car on that dyno to have lower than normal numbers. Maybe the technician disengaged the rear wheel sensor?
Will Riley exactly my thought. Especially that one which looks like a mustang dyno.
I was wondering why the back wheels were turning ,
The biggest problem with these fwd Volvos is lack of exhaust flow. If people would get away from the tiny k04s and TD04s they would make alot more power reliably and not bend rods.
My man, what are those wheels called? I've been looking for that exact same design for my C30. I love the way yours look!
I'm actually about to move away from the East TN area, but I may have to come back for the Dragon meet. I'll definitely be paying attention to your thoughts on the LSD once you get to that point - it's probably the mod I'm most interested in for my currently-stock 2012 R-Design. Do you know yet if you're going with a Quaife, Wavetrac, or some other unit?
Probably a quaife.
What is the boost pressure and fuel ratio for your tune?
Sounds like you have a 13t turbo. My stock turbo fell on its face after about 50 mph. My 19t is opposite.
My vehicle is a 98 V70 XC btw
The stock turbo on these cars is a K04
Do a volvo S40 T4 with a 1.9 turbo is a insane little power plant would crush the c30 with no problem with a BSR stage 3 tune 240 HP and around 380 nm
Those aren't available in North America.
Have a V50 with same issue, rocket in low rpm. Spins tires through 2nd easily and hard not to from standstill. Good video
Out of curiosity, did you ever do the k16
Guys, you need to re-do the battle with proper measurement hw... Spray two lines on the road, and just use a stopwatch, if you can't get proper device :) throw these results to trash, and dont focus on them... Both 0-60 and 1/8 mile times... It was an app that used GPS on a phone. It will never be as precise as dedicated device 😉
Just look at your versus video, how the speed data lagged... I bet that was the cause of piór 0-60 Times of v70rs
Out of context question: Have you noticed an issue with the oil drain plug leaking? Just bought my 08 c30. Replaced mine with an oem torqued to 27ftlb. still leaks, but not bad, just enough to bug me. Anyway, keep up the good work guys!
I havent encountered that issue. But I'll be on the look out.
Thanks for watching.

yes sir!
CONTENT!!! Gracias!
what can you say about the reliability of this car? I'm planning on getting a used 2008 model.
It's been awesome.
Brb...
Knocking all kinds of wood.
I've stayed ahead of the maintenance and it hasn't missed a beat.
Just wondering if the car came in awd because the back wheels spin on the dino too?
Tail of the dragon is over rated, I use to live there. Go to Blood Mt on the far side of Blairsville Ga. it's way more fun. Or the road to Hellen Ga. it is REALLY REALLY fun, and both are't that far from the Dragon. Both have amazing curves , and less people.
Mmmm
I’ve got a D2 1.6 c30 what exhaust do you suggest single exit ! Thanks
Not to be that guy but an explanatory text of which curve is what in the graphs would be nice thou.. XOXO T5 owner Sweden
Awsome!
It IS known 😁
it't simple bro, stage 3 cams, bigger turbo, bigger injectors, and tune again and gooooo
do you guys measure things differently?
1. You guys really suck at racing😁 Keep practicing 👌🏁
When is the dragon C30 event. I would love to take my C30 up there and meet up.
Late may. I'll have more details as the event gets closer.
I would love to have a C30 to play with, but simply cannot afford it.
Ghost I make almost nothing and have one lol
Ill see you at the dragon this year
NICE!!!
So here’s a question how come you didn’t go with the c30 polestar edition just wondering
Definitely more realistic to mod one with an automatic!
notification squad!
what katalysator has the 3" downpipe from elevate, can you tell?
The wheels top off that Silver c30 Bullet .
Probably get those results from the factory exhaust for those that don't want to change it.
Just found you. What wheels are those
Yayyy EARLY!
Damn! You are on it.
@@canyoneagle wow it's awd! Now it might be a C30 Polestar
Not AWD. Rear rollers are coupled but not calibrated to read. Still FWD.
@@ShiftingLanes Ohhh ok....
Those are the Lancia Delta Integrale wheels or are replicas?
when did the C30 come with AWD? or am I missing somthing?
Not AWD. Rollers are connected. Though some people are doing AWD swaps.
Small turbo early spool is better for everyday driving.
Don’t worry though...On a track, the C30 is a weapon...
Everyone is a critic,lol
Did you have the tune on her before you did the 8th mile drag?
Yes I did
ShiftingLanes I too have if Volvo C30 and I’m curious as far as the differences between the V 70 and the C30 and the 60 for that matter
