We have been given various Glen Grant samples by lots of our lovely whisky friends so we decided to try a bunch of them together to compare! We tried:
Glen Grant 10 Year Old 40% Bourbon Cask Distillery Bottling
Glen Grant Aurora Borealis 40% Bourbon and Sherry Cask Distillery Bottling
Cadenhead 12 Year Old Glen Grant 63.3%
Man With The Hat 26 Year Old Glen Grant 51.8%

I just love your tasting videos so much. Thank you for providing such a fresh perspective. Your tasting notes are so approachable and so unpretentious. I love how you describe what you are experiencing, no matter if it’s other foods, other drinks, or even shapes, sizes, or colors. You are making whisky more approachable for everyone!

It's the Abrora Rorbrealis...the Arorba Borabrilis...the Abarors Rorabilis...the Northern Lights.

You know. I'm still trying to get my head around the insane odds that so many Scottish guys named Glen founded their own distilleries. Sure, you have the exceptions like Artey Begowitz who founded Ardbeg and Abbey Loure who founded Aberlour, but guys like Glen Allachie, Glen Goyne and Glen Rothes just dominated the trade. Sure, Larry Phroig and Brook Laddie were very influential in the history of Scotch but nowhere near the likes of Glen Livet, Glen Morangie and Glen Dronach. And let's not even mention that Pete guy who had a hand in almost every distillery in Scotland, especially Islay.
This is fantastic, you should write a book about them all!
@@TheGrailTastings I would love to but then I would also have to reveal the horrible "truths" that The Grail isn't an actual business but just a prop building facade held up by sticks and that Jen and Rachel are simply actors hired by Diageo to promote whisky. The only thing more shocking than learning that they're both teetotallers who've never even tasted whiskey is learning that Ralfy isn't an actual person but a retired Disney animatronic repurposed for the campaign*. In fact, if you spun the camera around 180 degrees, you'd find Ralfy's bothy set on the opposite side of the studio from The Grail's.
Oh, what delicious chaos I could weave with whiskey beginners! But, unfortunately, that pesky conscience-thingy I harbor has told me I've already reached my "being-a-jerk" quota for the year.

I agree that Glen Grant does good tours: I did the 'posh' one with a dram above a stream way up in the gardens... My favourite on the day was the 15-year-old, but elsewhere I have tasted some absolutely glorious hyper-aged ones, including a 62-year-old! At the other end of the scale, young Glen Grant (often only a 5-year-old) has been the most popular Scotch single malt in Italy for decades...
Sorry we don't have the bottles on these ones. we were just given various wee sample bottles but I've listed them below the video so a wee google should bring them up.
GG massive in Italy! I was introduced to Guiseppe (Beppe) Bertoni in Milan in 2019. He owns Mulligan’s pub in Milan, which has an Irish Bar identity but was and may still be an Ardbeg Embassy(?), & has probably the finest selection of seriously old Glen Grant anywhere in the World? It’s an amazing place & he’s a lovely man and I’m not just saying that cos he gifted me a bottle of Amarone at last year’s Festival Bunnahabhain open day! 😂😂 xx

Apologies in advance if this is too serious in tone, but: I'm no expert on this history, but from what little I understand, the development of railways was largely a mid-19C thing in the UK incl. Scotland. The decline of Campbeltown was a 20C thing, and more to do with too many producers there making poor whiskies, and facing the challenge of Prohibition in the US from the 1920s. So I think you can excuse Speyside railways from any responsibility for that decline.
Campbeltown's west coast location meant shipping was its primary means of transport, whether to Glasgow or across the Atlantic, and that tied it more closely to changes in the (20C) US market.

It's incredible how close these distilleries are. Glen Grant, Speybyrn, Craigellichie, and Aberlour.

Found a 1992 Lonach Glen Grant 22 at a pub a couple of months ago. It was thin, but I see how it might be a refreshing summer dram. I'd liken it to a lightly sweetened cucumber water, given the grassy quality. Interesting nonetheless, so thanks for expanding on the line for us poor yanks

By the way this whisky is called “Arboralis” (Arbor is Latin for tree) and not aurora borealis 😂 Glen Grant says it means “light from within the trees” and the casks are/were “sheltered by tall, ancient trees lining the Victorian Gardens of The Glen Grant Distillery”

@@TheGrailTastings it was actually really nice. The garden behind the distillery is lovely with a little gorge and small river coming down the mountain, it also smelled super nice and sweet when walking towards the visitor center. The tour was ok, pretty much standard and we got to try the 10yo and the Arboralis and it’s really a lovely dram, easy to drink and 28£ is very reasonable for this whisky.
Great ep! I've noticed you have a bit of synesthesia, Jen: you often give a visual description of how your whisky tastes (e.g. a high line above a squiggly line). And it makes total sense! Throwing this out there: Kilkerran 12, Glenallachie 12 or Glenallachie 10 cs - what's your favourite? Your vids continue to be very edumactional. 😊Respect!

I think I would say Kilkerran 12 out of those 3 (incidentally it tastes purple to me) and I think Rachel would go with the Glenallachie 12 and interestingly I think our middle ground would be the Glenallachie10 CS which is also great! (Jen)
WHAT SORT OF WHICHCRAFT AND ALCHEMY have you got going on there Rachel ??? @11:30 - 11:40 your hair is Lavender on the left and Platinum blonde on the right....THEN @ 11:50 your hair is lavender on both sides!......its like an Aurora Borealis....changing colors on me and moving around.......LOL...(sorry...couildnt help myself!)

Sorry we don't actually have the bottles of these ones, just wee sample bottles we were given them in. The bottlings are listed in the description so a quick google should bring them up.
