    Whereas Scotch was first made by all those unrelated Scottish fellows named Glen, I'm glad to see the French Hayek family still makes all these grape spirits, notably Armond Hayek, Connie Hayek and their daughter Brandy (who's a fine girl, what a good wife she would be, her eyes could steal a sailor from the sea).

    I remember once tasting rum from the 70s and I was utterly blown away by the richness and complexity of the different flavors. It really is a privileged experience to taste such old spirits. I hope to acquire a birth year bottle of whisky someday, although every year it gets more prohibitive.

    Big brandy drinker trying to cone back to scotch after a few years hiatus. De Gaube is well known to make some excellent old Armagnacs. Oldest thing I've had was a 1924 cognac bottled by Grosperrin. Amazingly it had spent 97 years in oak and wasn't the slightest bit over oaked. Fantastic.

      Wow! 97 years and not over oaked! Sounds amazing!

    I had a bottle of 1967 (received in 1997) Armagnac. It was excellent. I recently purchased two bottles of 1991 Armagnac (probably 30 year old). I should probably try that one. If Armagnac the most affordable of the aged spirits followed by rum.

    I'm loving the banter having recently discovered you lovely ladies after watching Ralfy 'pineapple and mint' reviews and now appreciating 'old swimming floats, musty lofts and jobbie' reviews 🤔
    Rachel snorting Armagnac as soon as Jen said it smells of glue has got to be one of the funniest moments, thanks for making me smile ☺

    One of the problems with buying 'birth year bottles' for an old codger like me is the price and Armagnac is (so far) quite good with that. Now I do have a Canadian whisky with a 1961 label, but their regulations are a bit 'casual' and it wasn't much less than the cheaper of the 2 Armagnacs I've got from that year. Of course the 1961 Highland Park - The Dragon was about four times as much as those three combined... In between pricewise I do have a North British 50-year-old single grain from 1962 (though only a 200ml bottle) and an unspecified 1963 single malt from Gordon & Macphail. For anything older, I've had to rely on specialist whisky shows or bars like Dornoch Castle Hotel.

    • @bdwilcox
      @bdwilcox ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The main problem with that old, 1961 Canadian whiskey is that it's Canadian whiskey. Zing!

    • @TheGrailTastings
      @TheGrailTastings  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah absolutely RE price of birth year whiskies which are going up in price quickly!! Can imagine that North British and Highland Park are delicious though!

    I've never tried Armagnac...
    I've heard the French use it mainly for cooking. 😶
    One 15 yo brandy from Jarnac was incredible though! 🙂
    Unforgettable!

    I bought a Baron de Lustrac 1968, Vintage Armagnac about 2 years ago for under £200 there is a lot of bang for your buck with these.

    I'm sipping a 25-year-old Delord Bas Armagnac while watching this video, and getting a lot of the same flavor and aroma sensations, except that this Delord tastes more of pear instead of apple. Really good stuff and only $69.00 for the bottle, which is pretty phenomenal for a spirit of its age. The other thing is the strength of flavors it provides at an ABV of 40% - I've never had a Scotch that tasted so robust at 40%. I'm not really into brandies, but this makes me want to explore this type of spirit a bit more.

    • @TheBensta96
      @TheBensta96 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's likely because Delord adds sugar to it. Also it is likely less reduced than most scotch. Still strength on most Armagnac is 48-52% because it's most often single distilled. Cask strength on the 25yr is probably fairly close to 40abv, certainly closer than most cask strength scotch.

    • @paulm749
      @paulm749 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheBensta96 I really doubt they added any sugar to this batch. It starts out with just the faintest hint of sweetness, then finishes pretty dry. The finish is quite long too.

    Question I am assuming that the brands are also different and a years difference on the same brand would have very little change in taste but can be influenced by the barrel used. Cheers

    No Armagnac is the more robust flavours because of the oak barrels used and Cognac is more smooth and fine...

    Did I miss where they showed the bottles or said which armagnac this is? It's like saying you are trying scotch from 1964, but not saying what region of scotland or which distillery it's from?
