It would be interesting to compare the optical qualities of the Q2 vs higher end headsets as some of them can be adjusted much more precise (stepless IPD, eye relief, some even have separate hardware and software IPD) to your particular needs. Would love to hear an expert's opinion on these health aspects.
@@DrEyeGuy I'd watch that for sure! Would also be interesting so see whether headsets with canted displays and lenses produce any negative effects (Valve Index has 5° outward per eye, Pimax headsets have about 20° per eye so they can have a huge field of view, but very little stereo overlap). Vive Pro 2 has a straight optics assembly but stacked fresnel lenses, also an interesting setup.
It’s funny that you say the “higher end headsets” are the ones with step less IPD adjustment, because the original Oculus Quest, which is what I have, does have stemless IPD adjustment. My IPD is 62 and in the quest one you can choose any IPD value within the range. Idk why they chose to get rid of that, also I think it’s dumb that it only comes in white, so hopefully the next quest gets the best of both
I also still have an OG Quest but not the 2. Reason why they canned stepless IPD adjustment is to enable usage of a single larger display panel rather than the 2 separate ones in the Quest 1. All so it is cheaper to make. With a single panel and the 3 IPD notches you switch between software profiles that just offset the displayed content on the fixed panel. Creating that in a seamless manner would be a pain in the rear for software development. So they simplified it to the point of making it borderline unergonomic for a lot of people. Simply because it won't matter to the masses who are not deep into the subject matter. The fact that VR may have some direlong term consequences for kids below the age of 12 but them marketing it mostly towards kids anyway pretty much tells you what you need to know about the Q2 and the people making it.
Thank you so much! This really helped me out when I was playing Saints And Sinners. Everything was so blurry and it was so annoying. Thanks to your video I can enjoy playing my Walking Dead game! *New Subscriber!*
Great advice Doc, my eyeballs thank you! I learned another trick that helped me with eyestrain\dryness on the Quest 2 (not sure if medically accurate but it helped me), here goes: So after your put on and line up the headset, I would pull it out to the front just a bit (i.e. just enough that it's not applying pressure on my cheeks), I would then literally close my eyes and seat the headset back into position - that's it! I found that it reduced that eyelid stretching sensation and allowed me to blink much easier while wearing the headset. Just my 2 cents, hope someone finds it useful :)
Super interesting and really glad I got recommended this video before I recieved my quest 2 :) Love the 20/20/20 rule and totally going to set an alarm to go off every 20 mins when i play! big thanks for this excellent video!
I had a psvr and I did have those eye symptoms but when I wanted more games I switched to oculus quest 2 and before I bought it I watched this video and it helped my eyes from not getting so dry
After the first day my eyes felt dry, the second day wasn't as bad since I had already seen this video about taking breaks, I've bought eye drops to use, and change the settings to night mode, I've also purchased the lens and new face cover for ant blue light and better air flow to eyes.
This video is great! It really helped me understand how to use my vr headset correctly. I recently purchased a vr headset that should be arriving soon, so this video had perfect timing. I do have a small question though. So you were talking about how blue light can mess up my sleep pattern especially when using something that emits blue light before going to sleep. I’ve heard this sentiment before in a lot of other videos so I thought I should ask you this question since you are a professional. For some reason whenever I use my phone before bed or play games before bed, while it’s true that I don’t feel tired (probably due to lack of melatonin) I still almost instantly fall asleep when going to sleep. So my question is: why? Is it because I have a blue light absorbing superpower? Could it be that I’m an android sent by Cyberlife? Or is there a more scientific explanation? If you happen to see this comment, I would be more than happy to hear your explanation.
For sure you are an android sent by cyberlife. 😄 This is actually a really good question. You may be able to fall asleep just fine. I would wonder how restful your sleep is. I wonder if you have less REM sleep than you would if you didn't use your phone. Maybe it just affects your deep sleep and not necessarily your ability to fall asleep?
Thank you so much for making this video I got my son the quest 2 for Xmas and now I know how to make sure his eyes are the most protected so thank you again
I was actually having alot of issues. But I took my old pair of glasses and busted the arms and nose pieces off and taped them inside the quest 2 and it has helped so much! They dont touch the lenses and it allows for so much more room. Then I can adjust as needed.
The info in this video is so clear and professional. Thank you so much! I have an astigmatism and the Oculus messes with me so much and my eyes are always dry. I am going to try these tips!
Thank you for the amazing comment! I'll be making a video here in the next week or two specifically about blur with the Oculus quest 2. Thanks for commenting this.
Finally a useful VR channel! I work about 8 hours daily with the computer and I've got the Oculus2 a couple of days ago. Even after 24h from the last vr session, when I focus on the PC screen, it feels weird, sometimes like it has its own depth. Not easy to describe.
@@DrEyeGuy Thanks for the hint. It actually could be it! also I figured out that my IPD was set wrong, so I played with the visor for about 10h (in 3 days) with a wrong position (thanks for the app btw). I just hope to get used to it and the effects from VAC go away
I'm not sure if the stock face cover's foam loses it's "springy" nature over time. I've had my Quest 2 since December, and when I went to use it after a few months of not, I found that there was a slight blurriness to everything. Not a lot but enough to be annoying. My lenses are not scratched as I baby my quest. I cleaned my lenses thinking that they were oily, which they weren't. I made sure that the lenses were the correct distance apart and they were. Then I pulled the quest from my face slowly only to discover that it cleared right up being slightly away from my eyes (around the thickness of the foam). It did NOT affect my field of view at all. That made me wonder if it was always like that of new after being worn out or something. Today I bought a new face cover from Amazon and should be here Sunday. My hope is that it's thicker then the stock cover, allowing that distance that I need for a clear picture. If you are experiencing similar issues, maybe consider trying to pull the quest away from your face slightly. The thickness of the foam may be all you need. If you find that clears thing up, then you should consider finding after market cover that's thicker than the stock one, or find something that will extend the stock cover's foam allowing for distance.
Thanks for commenting this, I just had somebody comment this exact same thing on one of my other videos. I think you are right... likely having a thicker cover that pushes the face out a little bit will help.
Just got my oculus 2 today, definitely noticed the dry eyes right away (after 20 minutes of use). I will have to use more of those AT's ! Thanks for all the great tips.
Excellent question. I don't think there is any direct evidence of that, but a lot of theories suggesting it. Have you been to an eye doctor to get your eyes checked?
@@DrEyeGuy I don't have the means to do that yet. but it's in the works. once i do i should get some insight into what's going on. i have a strong feeling the only way to get any eye issues is from long term staring at some obviously uncomfortable distance too close to a flat screen, and not a VR.
I had cataract surgery 4 years ago and since then I need glasses to read up close, such as cell phones, books, and also computer monitors at work. My Headset Quest 2 arrived 4 days ago, I put my oculus on and when I put it on my head, it was all blurred as if I had no glasses, I was really sad but I decided to take off my prescription glasses and try to put quest 2 on again, and to my surprise it was all wonderfully clear as I have never seen it before. It just seemed like a miracle to me to see everything clearly without my prescription glasses. I would like to know how Quest 2 fixed my Presbyopia(or farsightedness?)? I've been using it a lot, several hours, watching movies, reading books, even with small print I didn't have headaches or nausea, I'm really very satisfied but I would like to know why I can see without an oculus with when I'm in VR, and when I take it off. lo I need the glasses again.
I actually did a live video explaining how all of that works if you want to check it out: th-cam.com/video/VCsAPaAhCaY/w-d-xo.html It's kind of long, but it explains everything. The short summary is that VR optics are set for more distance, at about 4 feet out. So it you don't need glasses for 4 feet, then you won't need any in VR.
Yes!! I watched it right after this video and I understood that I'm probably finding a comfortable point a little far from the center it must be very close to my glasses lenses, making this point work like them. My eyeglasses are also not as tall as some people I know. Thank you, your video was really an excellent learning experience for me, I always thought the physics behind the construction of the lens was fantastic and you explained it very well.
I've been playing with my quest 2 more often now and learned I needed my glasses. Thanks for the video! Also, I have this issue where I have to rotate the headset forward in order to see more clearly. Got anything? Thanks!
I've noticed that it cuts down on the "godrays" as well. Thanks for the comment, and yeah... that's interesting about the blue light glasses. I wonder if having blue light glasses causes you to blink less and so your eyes dry out faster.... not sure.
I've been thinking about getting an Oculus Quest 2, but wanted to be sure if I would need some things before getting it. I'm glad I came across your video for eye safety and tips.
That’s great about the night mode. I didn’t realise it had that much of an effect as my wife gets headaches after using the oculus for too long. I think blue lights the culprit.
Interesting advice, all common sence. I've been into VR since the Vive came out, spent 100's of hours in VR, never had eye strain, then I make sure the headset is balanced with a weight at the back, I blink often, and I take breaks. I've never and will never use an Oculus Quest, mostly because it is linked to Facebook and I don't want advertisement in my games, and I have a large IPD 75mm and the 68mm it goes too is too small. The only HMD's I've found that cater for large IPD's are Vive and Vive Pro (out of production now) and the Pimax range (I have an 8KX and it is the best I have used). The HP Reverb G2, Vive Pro 2, and Valve Index are all restircted to 68 to 70mm IPD, which I find disappointing.
So thankful for this! Will putting a lot of pressure on the cheeks and lower eye lids cause eye strain/twitching? I’ve ordered a new head strap and hopefully it works better than the original because I love working out with it but the eye strain is 🥴
The new head strap is going to make a huge difference... at least it did for me. You know... I could swear that the device caused my eyelid twitch once. Hard to say if that was actually the cause or something else.
Good video, thank you. I have an astigmatism and I don’t wear glasses. I have troubles with my vision getting blurry after awhile, I’m assuming it’s because of so much eye strain?
Hi! Yes I have been affected by it, it all made sense when you said about the device resting on my cheekbones pulling on my eyelids open, I was totally lost before this, getting eye strain after a few hours

So after your put on and line up the headset, I would pull it out to the front just a bit (i.e. just enough that it's not applying pressure on my cheeks), I would then literally close my eyes and seat the headset back into position - that's it!
I found that it reduced that eyelid stretching sensation and allowed me to blink much easier while wearing the headset.
Just my 2 cents, hope someone finds it useful :)
Awesome tip! I do that myself as well.
Im getting an oculus soon and this helped me alot on trying to put the right settings and from preventing my vision to go blind
Awesome! Glad it could help.
Listening your video makes me realize I am doing everything wrong and “stab” my eye with all bad habits 😹。 thank you for sharing all these tip
I'm glad I could keep you from "stabbing" your eyes.. haha! Thanks!
This helped so much
Thank you so much
And thank you for watching and commenting
“Blue light hurts eyes”
Me singing “I’m blue dabodidabodai”
The blue light do not hurt your eyes all it does is make you blink less and effects your sleeping
Ive ordered one yesterday and these videos help me and I will know what to do when It comes!
Have fun!
Super interesting and really glad I got recommended this video before I recieved my quest 2 :) Love the 20/20/20 rule and totally going to set an alarm to go off every 20 mins when i play! big thanks for this excellent video!
Thanks! Hope you like the quest 2... it's addicting!
I had a psvr and I did have those eye symptoms but when I wanted more games I switched to oculus quest 2 and before I bought it I watched this video and it helped my eyes from not getting so dry
Awesome! Thank you for commenting this!
Lol should have watched this way before I got addicted to it. Thanks for the tips
Haha! It's ok, I'm addicted too. Never too late to use the tips though. Thanks for the comment!
Thx for the tips they work and my mom wont complain that the oculus is bad for my eyes i'll show this vid to her and prove her wrong. Thanks bud!
Thank you for making this video, I really think it ought to be essential viewing for every VR user out there. ❤️
Thanks! I think it would help a lot of people.
Thank you so much my eyes won’t burn anymore
I hope the tips help!
I am gonna have a look on my Rift to see if any of the showed settings are available... I really hope the blue light filter is at least there XD
thanks for the video Dr.EyeGuy, you answered most of my questions, which I haven't looked up up since I bought this one month ago.
You're welcome
After the first day my eyes felt dry, the second day wasn't as bad since I had already seen this video about taking breaks, I've bought eye drops to use, and change the settings to night mode, I've also purchased the lens and new face cover for ant blue light and better air flow to eyes.
Nice! Sounds like you are taking the right steps.
I would recommend using the glasses spacer it helped me today to not get aching eyes
@@takayukikuroki3816 Thanks! Nice Tip
Thank you for your expertise about the Oculus. I really enjoy your videos. Very informative! :)
Thank you for the awesome comment. I really do appreciate it.
This is actually a really good question. You may be able to fall asleep just fine. I would wonder how restful your sleep is. I wonder if you have less REM sleep than you would if you didn't use your phone. Maybe it just affects your deep sleep and not necessarily your ability to fall asleep?
@@DrEyeGuy The same happens to me, I guess I'm another android sent by cyberlife
Thank you so much for making this video I got my son the quest 2 for Xmas and now I know how to make sure his eyes are the most protected so thank you again
Awesome! He is going to love. Glad this video could be helpful.
I'm glad my eyes don't get dry or hurt after I use the quest :)
That is nice!
I just got my quest 2. Thank you for this video!
You're very welcome!
Thanks this is great to know im getting my Quest 2 very soon :)
You are going to love it! Hope the video helped. Maybe I'll bump into you in VR, I'll keep my eyes open.
Oh man...I'm ecited for you! Is this your first HMD? You're going to love it.
You're a godsend doctor. Super helpful!
Thank you! I'm trying my best to help in any way that I can.
You: Wear glasses while playing VR
Me: I’m blind as a bat I kind of have too. Thank God for the glasses extension
Finally a useful VR channel!
I work about 8 hours daily with the computer and I've got the Oculus2 a couple of days ago. Even after 24h from the last vr session, when I focus on the PC screen, it feels weird, sometimes like it has its own depth. Not easy to describe.
I almost wonder if you are experiencing effects from the Vergence-Accomodation Conflict maybe?
@@DrEyeGuy Thanks for the hint. It actually could be it! also I figured out that my IPD was set wrong, so I played with the visor for about 10h (in 3 days) with a wrong position (thanks for the app btw).
I just hope to get used to it and the effects from VAC go away
Thank you for these great tips! Definitely experiencing the dry eyes and eye strain after less than an hour of using the oculus.
You're welcome! The dry eyes get me every time.
thank you for the tips, i need that as i just bought the Oculus Quest 2 two days ago, i am obessed with the VR thing now
Awesome! I hope you like it.
Dry eyes is the biggest thing for me. Hope the tips help.
I didn't know you could adjust the eye distance on them. Great tip, it will help the next time I dawn a 3D head set.
It's always great when you can dawn an Oculus Quest 2 :)
I didn't even know what the purpose of the top head strap was until i saw this, and now it's SO much more comfortable to play VR!
Awesome! Glad the video helped, and thanks for commenting.
no wonder I was "crying"
Yea I thought my eyes were gonna break serious just got off of gt
I am quite a big guy and i use the smallest setting. I never know that i had eyes that are relatively close together, I guess i must do.
I almost got blind while playing vr, but thanks to this video now i wont get not even a little bit near to be blind. Thank you!
Good to hear... gotta keep people from going blind as much as I can. 🙂
I use the Vive, and I gotta say the night mode really helps! You should use it either way.
Does the VR system and consecutive time spent in front of a TV contribute to Astigmatism?
Everyone has been Bit©hing at how my very slight inability to focus two images together has been from every lick of technology I have for myself.
It hasn't gotten worse over time with use of technology though, and the image produced from my vision is still sharp from all distances. There's just a very faint double seen from greater distances.
I actually did a live video explaining how all of that works if you want to check it out: th-cam.com/video/VCsAPaAhCaY/w-d-xo.html
It's kind of long, but it explains everything.
“Don’t sit too close to the TV”
Literally straps a screen to my head that surrounds my eyeballs
Haha! Our grandparents would think we are crazy.
@@DrEyeGuy Yep lol. Also I subscribed.
Awesome! Thank you so much!
I've been playing with my quest 2 more often now and learned I needed my glasses. Thanks for the video! Also, I have this issue where I have to rotate the headset forward in order to see more clearly. Got anything? Thanks!
The blue light glasses make my eyes drier. I dont know why.
Also night mode helps stop some of the “godrays” from white letters.
I've noticed that it cuts down on the "godrays" as well. Thanks for the comment, and yeah... that's interesting about the blue light glasses. I wonder if having blue light glasses causes you to blink less and so your eyes dry out faster.... not sure.
@@DrEyeGuy I bet that’s it.
That's good to know, I'm quite sensitive to godrays, so that alone makes it worth trying
I've been thinking about getting an Oculus Quest 2, but wanted to be sure if I would need some things before getting it. I'm glad I came across your video for eye safety and tips.
And I'm glad you watched my video. 🙂 and thanks for commenting.
That’s great about the night mode. I didn’t realise it had that much of an effect as my wife gets headaches after using the oculus for too long. I think blue lights the culprit.
You will have to let me know if the night mode or blue light filter helps your wife. Thanks for the comment!
So did using the blue light setting help?
@@KimberleyB yes It did. It helped me anyway. My other half hasn’t used the oculus for a while but I’ve definitely noticed a difference.
@@daviddoyle2085 thanks for reporting back.
Dude thank you so much it’s been hurting my eyes a lot lately and it’s really help
Awesome! Glad it helped.
Nice, you already had it figured out.
I've had the rift s for a few months now and have yet to get any ads in game (or out of game for that matter)
What’s the best practical joke you’ve pulled or seen pulled?
man I dont need my eyes to play VR, imma hardass lol
Good video, thank you. I have an astigmatism and I don’t wear glasses. I have troubles with my vision getting blurry after awhile, I’m assuming it’s because of so much eye strain?
It could be, or it could be from dryness as well.
Jesus loves you.
Im an atheist
Thanks a lot doctor. These tips will surely help. Every oculus quest2 user must follow these tips
Thank you for saying this. I really appreciate it.
I'm going to get a oculus quest 2 soon and this will definately save my life. Thank you!
Hi! Yes I have been affected by it, it all made sense when you said about the device resting on my cheekbones pulling on my eyelids open, I was totally lost before this, getting eye strain after a few hours
Thank you, just bought one.i wear reading glasses should I have them on with the spacer. Thanks, great vids. Steve
I am going to buy my first VR Glasses and I the oculus quest 2 is my fav so far. Thanks for the advise before I use it incorrectly
Awesome! I hope you like it.
