Hi, from Bucharest, Romania ! I am 39 years old and suffer from motion sickness since childhood. Antiemetic drugs are of no use to me and journeys, including by train, are tormented for me. I feel strong fatigue and nausea during a travel by train. Unfortunately in car rides is the worst. Besides the classic motion sickness that you describe in this video, I think I have an increased sensitivity to vibrations and speed variations. I feel pressure and an unpleasant sensation when the car is turning, accelerating and decelerating. Then I start to feel nauseous, feeling which sometimes suddenly increases in intensity. I have had a few flights recently. I feel every movement of the airplane like a strong pressure in the chest, back or head. Ofcourse, I also, sometimes feel nauseous on the plane and flying is stressful for me. I would not resist traveling more than an hour by the airplane. I really don't know how to stop being sensitive to speed variations and vibrations.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Motion sickness can really affect people in different degrees. I hope you are able to find something that is helpful.
Try ginger pills. 1 or 2 about 20 mins before any activity you know will cause nausea. I'm also quite sensitive. But once I started doing this, zero problems. Just make sure to get the real stuff ie. dried ginger. Not gingerale or ginger flavour etc.
For flying, just sit around in the plane or outside at the airport and leave it there for a bit. Then after an hour or so of the first, try just taxiing around, slowly. Then after a bit of that, all good, fresh air flowing, water, do some circuits. No jets here, just a slow flight, str8 and level mostly ....did you make sure the lenses are properly measured?
Hallo, I've got another tip for you. @2:22 your lenses look a little dirty. Clean them with a glasses cloth. And @1:20 fluids in your eyes are still spinning around? I find that hard to believe. Is that a proven fact?
The fluids in your ears are still spinning around, not the fluid in the eyes. The b roll of the dirty lenses are from av different video talking about dirty lenses. 🙂
@@DrEyeGuy aha that explains it. Thank you for your tips. I have got another solution that worked for me. Take a office chair that can spin around so you can look around easily. I get less dizzy while sitting down than when I’m standing upright. I can move using the thumb stick and then it is just like a wheelchair experience. It’s ok for casual gaming but less useful if you are playing intensive games.
me too,but now i able to use smooth turn after a yr forcing myself, best solution is, reduce the smooth turn speed and gradually increase it abit times to times
As someone whos been using the Quest 2 for at least 4+hrs every night, for the last 3 yrs.... i got motion sickness early on from sitting. As long as i stood up, i was fine. Even now, occasionally I'll feel it & stand up and it goes away. (I dont wear prescription glasses). My 27 yr old daughter also uses her Q2 alot, but has very bad eyesight..she tends to still get motiin sickness once in a while. Most times standing up helps.. other times she just needs a break. **Question for the Dr!** Do you ever go into Horizon Worlds??
i think there may be another factor to consider when looking at IPD. I believe there can be some asymmetry in the face and in the position of pupils relative to parts of the face to the face plate of the headset uses as the mount/lock-in position of the head-mounted display. with the quest 2 the IPD adjustment is assuming a person the face and pupils, vertically and horizontally on face
I've measured my IPD. it is 66.2 cm. setting 3 is to wide and setting 2 is to narrow. I acutally managed to put the setting between 2 and three on my Oculus quest 2

Hi! Most of what I found were from VR conferences and demonstrations like here: ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/8708972 At least those were the most recent findings from previous studies.
To give everyone here that when the Quest 2 is refered as the vomit machine, these users their IPD was not corresponding. Quest 2 has a fixed setting from 59/63/67, mine is 65, the quest 2 made me sick for two days, returned it thinking VR is nothing for me. Than I learned about this IPD, tried the Pico 4 (where you can set the IPD sharp by 0,5mm) and how boy I could play for an hour without any noticable signs of headache nearby. I talked to an optician about it and told me that using lenses in general with a difference of 2mm from your actual IPD was even dangerous to do, the doctor didn't understood that ''dangerous'' products like this were even sold without prescription. And I can tell you he's right as using the quest 2 for 30 minutes really gave me like migraine for two days. Can you guess what it would do when being stubborn and passing a whole day with the device thinking it's just a matter of getting used to the feeling.
Hello Doc, many thanks for the easy explanations and useful tips on this. I just have a question, if you don't mind. I cannot stand VR, not even for 5 minutes, I get sickness every time, but I do play on Xbox. recently, I've been experiencing headaches while playing a First Person Shooter. Lots of colors, flashes, and explosions, and haven't felt like this until recent days. Do you have any tips for that or something useful for us who play in a console, and these type of games? Thanks a lot in advance!
I am new to VR, or the Oculus Quest 2. And I started with Comfortable But then after a week or two, I started to play a Moderate game and I have no motion sickness whatsoever... maybe never BUT Thanks

Dr. EyeGuy, I am scheduled to have DMEK and the installation of Vivety lenses this summer. I am a school teacher that uses VR everyday with my students. I am concerned that the Vivety will make it so that VR will no longer look right and thus jeopardize my ability to do my job. Your thoughts?
Excellent question Todd! There are a lot of things to consider and think about for this one. Overall I think it's going to be a good thing and likely improve your vision and actually help with VR. With the vivity lens (I'm assuming you are a doing a multifocal lens), it should provide distance, intermediate, and near vision...as long as it's positioned correctly. VR usually sets their focal point a little bit further out in the distance (Oculus Quest 2 is 1.3meters out). That lens should do well that far out because it has a good depth of focus. There may be some limitations with glare or halos in VR... possibly... I'm not sure? But overall, I would think that it should help. If it doesn't, there's still a chance with correction, either glasses or VR lens inserts, that it could help. Tough to say because of so many factors. Are you having this surgery in both eyes, or just one eye?
When I was walking around in Horizon, I made the movement like I was really running, and I really started to get dizzy. I stopped immediately, and later today, I'm going to try playing it sitting down. 🙃
Darn, its not looking so great for me. I have amblyopia of the left eye, it super blurry and glasses dont work. I wonder if thats why I get cyber sickness. :( So many jobs I wanted passed me up cause of my sight and now I can't enjoy VR.
Get VR lenses and have it custom made to fit your left eye prescription. I have lenses myself from VR lenses and both the left and right eye is different and works amazing, much more comfortable without glasses in the VR !!
those ocular motor exercises made me nauseous! first person games on a PC already make me nauseous, as do 3d movies. i have little confidence that i will ever be able to use VR.
Tried live streaming layers of fear with my new oculus quest 2 last night. Got an instant fever and started to throw up. I felt sick all night. It was awful.
Def took some time to adjust first play thru in bonelab didnt even last 10 mins and i got sick, second playthrough was about 15 to 20,last night i put in a good hr so i think am getting used to it still get a little nauseous but overcoming it,gonna try the gum to see if it also helps. Also i found out that moving myseld as much as i could instead of using the joys stick helped out alot.
I wore my distance glasses with my Quest 2 and it actually made contact between the lens of the headset and the lens of my glasses. The glasses lens was scuffed and I have to see if my optometrist can fix that. My advice would be to definitely use the "glasses spacer" which goes between the headset and the face padding. I actually wound up ordering prescription lenses for the Quest 2 instead of risking another pair of glasses.
none of these helped me sadly not for the lack of trying. I wonder if its because the fluid in my ear not synchronizing with my eyes like what you where saying earlier. my body doesn't move as much as what shows in the vr games and the audio is't good enough to probably convince my ears or something of that matter.
after playing blades and sorcery in vr I got nausea then I continued playing until I couldnt resist anymore. i remember vomiting 2 times lol i stopped playing the game afterward

Is this motion sickness or something different??
I played the quest 2 and after, I looked at my hands and they seemed so unreal. So disconnected. How do we actually know we're all not in some advanced sim right now?
I strongly don't recommend using glasses when playing VR. I've unfortunately scratched my PSVR 2's lens because my glasses rubbed up against it. There's now damage on my glasses and has become extremely distracting. Instead, invest in some perscription lenses for your specific VR headset
Hello! I just found your page looking for motion sickness treatments and I have an eye question. Last fall I got contacts for the first time. They worked great. I loved them. Until this year when the pollen hit and I haven’t been able to wear them since. They made my eyes so red they looked bloody and they felt like I had gravel in them now and then. (It’s not concretions) it looks like I have a permanent crescent shaped mark on each eye now from the contacts. The eye dr I’ve been going to just seems puzzled and gave me dailies to try because he can’t think of anything else. He says my eyes are suddenly dry. Any ideas on how to fix this? Am I doomed to glasses? Im so sick of them. 😫
Certain video games like first person shooters or games like gta, my motion sickness is so severe that I honestly get the urge to vomit after 3 minutes.
I thought I had learned my lesson from a previous video...maybe I didn't. I just checked the video and it seems ok to me. I did use a different mic for this video and had issue with it with certain clips, which could be that. Sorry about that, that's what I get for trying something new. 😄

Hey. Thanks for the info about motion sickness the one that I use that you mentioned is chewing gum thanks to you I tried chewing gum and it worked I didn't get any motion sickness after chewing gum while I was playing the so good tips in this video keep up the good work 😂
Yeah i sometimes use my phone in the car (as a passenger) and I wondered why I feel sick
so THANKS
Same thing happens to my wife, she can barely even look down in a car without getting sick.
@@DrEyeGuy does she get motion sickness in vr?
@@alfiemarsden3419 she does a little bit, but not nearly as much as in the car.
@@DrEyeGuy I want to get one but I have bad travel sickness so I don’t know if it’s worth the £400 if it’s gonna make me sick if I play it
I don’t feel sick, but I watched this a lot before I got my PSVR2
How about we listen to our body and stay away from this craziness?
@@RoguePC4U Thanks for your advice I will try it.
Why would you argue with an eye doctor????
Smooth turn is still vomit in 60 secs for me, i can play for hours with snap turn. Would love to be able play with smooth turn
me too,but now i able to use smooth turn after a yr forcing myself, best solution is, reduce the smooth turn speed and gradually increase it abit times to times
Hi! Thanks for sharing!
And yes I do... I haven't been on in a while, but when I do get on the quest, I usually check out horizon.
I have intacts in my right eye to help correct keratoconus. What could I do to help since I just got VR and the motion sickness is bad.
i think there may be another factor to consider when looking at IPD. I believe there can be some asymmetry in the face and in the position of pupils relative to parts of the face to the face plate of the headset uses as the mount/lock-in position of the head-mounted display. with the quest 2 the IPD adjustment is assuming a person the face and pupils, vertically and horizontally on face
Thank you I'm a kid and it really helped me I felt horrible after vr and these helped me alot
Thanks for the video, I'm new to VR!
You're welcome! I hope you are able to enjoy VR.
@@DrEyeGuy Its been a great start!
I appreciate this video, thanks.
I've measured my IPD. it is 66.2 cm. setting 3 is to wide and setting 2 is to narrow. I acutally managed to put the setting between 2 and three on my Oculus quest 2
Thank you very much. It's a problem I've had a lot of. I haven't tried ps vr2 yet. It is said that there is no such problem in ps vr2.

That might explain why I get ill while playing my vr2! My headphones are busted and I'm getting a replacement soon.
Do those eye exercises they helped me a lot and with time vr starts feeling more natural you start to not notice your controllers and such.
I actually walk while pressing the forward/strafe thumbstick in vr to avoid motion sickness or I play cockpit(usually 3 DoF) sitting vr games.
eyedrops before Vr helped me a lot.
I never used VR in my life, but I do get motion sickness, while using cleaning standing moving machines at work, or at 6 flags. Using motion sickness patches, I seen some improvements at work. PS: I didn't work right away.
I’ve gotten my psvr2 today and i played horizon call of the mountain. What i realized is, that when i „walk“ in the game, im always close to falling down irl. Maybe tomorrow im gonna sit down on my chair and play the game sat down.
Sitting down playing horizon nearly had me throwing up my guts everywhere.. it may work for you but from what I’ve seen it’s been worse for most people also
@@recklezzone7926 yes your right, standing up is better for me. And if im being honest, to move yourself forwards with the sticks is better for me.

Neck fan could be a good idea since I definately feel myself start to sweat as motion sickness sets in.
i just bought my first vr head set meta quest 3s played some games but the one that kicked it is rollercoaster one

Thank you for the great video! :)
Do you maybe have a study for the walking-in-place Tip?
That would help a lot!
Hi! Most of what I found were from VR conferences and demonstrations like here: ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/8708972
At least those were the most recent findings from previous studies.
I’ve been using VR for a long time, but I’m just now getting motion sickness. No idea why.
So... is it bad if (Tip 5) Exercise #1 itself induces dizziness/motion sickness?
No... it makes me feel a little weird too. It could mean that if you do that with a routine it could help reduce the symptoms.
Excellent video. I was wondering IF anyone knows that IF America's Best Eyeglasses have Quest 2 Lenses? Thanks. :)
I dont think they do, at least I haven't heard if they do. Thanks for commenting!
I am new to VR, or the Oculus Quest 2. And I started with Comfortable
But then after a week or two, I started to play a Moderate game and I have no motion sickness whatsoever... maybe never
BUT Thanks
Hopefully you are good and won't experience cybersickness. 🤞
Thank you 🙏
With the Quest 2 I had no motion sickness. On Quest 3 I get motion sickness. I do experience motion sickness when I play high graphics games. I will try the ginger ale tip
Thanks for all the tips great video
Great info thanks!
Gratefully I haven't had any issues but I get major motion sickness so maybe I will with a certain game so I'm filing this away to help in case that happens!
Hopefully it never happens.
playing vr while sitting will even make it worse, I wouldn't do if i were you
Idk but I went to bed woke up and umm I feel like I am in vr and it’s kinda scary I’m still experiencing this rn
How about your brain not registering your hands in a spacial sense after long sessions.
Or is that a neurologist question 🙋 ?
those ocular motor exercises made me nauseous!
first person games on a PC already make me nauseous, as do 3d movies. i have little confidence that i will ever be able to use VR.
I played super hot vr and felt fine but one game of other vr games and I feel sick
Also i found out that moving myseld as much as i could instead of using the joys stick helped out alot.
the beginning is like the gamestop employee to my mom when i want a game
I wore my distance glasses with my Quest 2 and it actually made contact between the lens of the headset and the lens of my glasses. The glasses lens was scuffed and I have to see if my optometrist can fix that. My advice would be to definitely use the "glasses spacer" which goes between the headset and the face padding.
I actually wound up ordering prescription lenses for the Quest 2 instead of risking another pair of glasses.
Sorry to hear about your glasses! Thanks for posting this so people can be aware.
I get this condition less when sitting
So tru man
none of these helped me sadly not for the lack of trying.
I wanted to do a barrel rolle in Projekt wingman, I had to stop playing 😂

Is this motion sickness or something different??
The veil of the simulation is lifting...
I played the quest 2 and after, I looked at my hands and they seemed so unreal. So disconnected. How do we actually know we're all not in some advanced sim right now?
@@xpnuggetbear Do not try and bend the spoon-that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth… “There is no spoon.”
I strongly don't recommend using glasses when playing VR. I've unfortunately scratched my PSVR 2's lens because my glasses rubbed up against it. There's now damage on my glasses and has become extremely distracting.
Instead, invest in some perscription lenses for your specific VR headset
I had motion sickness because some people got me sick
The 20/20/20 rule certainly doest help in my case. The dizziness hits so hard that I cant even hold for 10 seconds.
