I didn't need to shave it down. A squirt of WD40 on the 2 sets of indentations and it moves like butter. Great video, thanks!

First time electric trimmer user of course I pull the head. Getting this thing back on is the most absolutely frustrating task
You may have some schmootz or dirt keeping it from squeezing properly to twist and lock.

I bought mine about a year ago and had problems pushing and twisting the head to unlock it. Took it to Home Depot and they had trouble so they gave me a new one. Still had trouble even after using WD-40 on it. Finally got it off so I could clear the tangled line inside it. Should be a lot easier to remove.

How did you get yous off? I've tried just about everything short of prying off with screw drivers.
I used WD40 to aid in the twist step. It did make it easier. Thanks for your guidance.

Use a flat heat on the top casing attached to the handle when turning clockwise, this should help with leverage

My string went inside the head...to get at it, I had to take the head apart...now I can't get it back together to work. I get it together but the handle cannot crank the string...it will not turn.

I wonder if there is some grit or something blocking it. To troubleshoot, See if it will go together without the spool, then without the spring, then without the line.

Got one for Christmas and went to use it for the first time today.
For the life of me I just cannot get the head off to open up and undo tangles. I tried before using it just to see how hard it was. Couldn’t open it. So used it for 5 minutes and had an inside tangle. It took my wife tapping in it with a screwdriver/hammer to get it out of the locked position. Now I can’t get this stupid thing back on. It shouldn’t be this difficult. And yes, I’m pushing and turning. Why would it be this difficult?
Hey Kevin, sorry to hear about your experience. Make sure the arrows are lined up properly. Then make sure the spool cover is compressing to the lid.

Mine is new and it is ridiculous how hard it is to turn. I am going to have to return mine. Never getting ryobi again
Keep in mind that you don’t always have to remove the head to load the string.
Absolute nightmare of a product. My wife bought it , used it once, the line stayed it the casing ( for lack of a better term) and with an oil filter wrench and a pipe wrench I could get the “casing”, off but to put it back on was just ridiculous!!! Not even good for a paperweight this thing!

Just put a flat head on the top of casing on the plastic, the first couple of times, it’s difficult, but the plastic wears

You need to remove the video where you tell people to disassemble the head in order to change the string. I removed the head like you said in the video but now I cannot get it reattached. It’s too hard to turn. And I am a grown man. Now I have to return my disassembled unit to home Depot and get another one. Remove the incorrect video please.
Yo, EggMan, I appreciate your feedback. However, you MUST remove the head to reload the line if A) the line is tangled inside the head or if B) the center channel is clogged with line, grass, or dirt or if C) the line has been cranked too much and the line is no longer sticking out the grommets. Again, thanks for the suggestion.

Can you reload the string by wacking it on the ground? (While there's still available string in the spool)
Only if there is line sticking out. Also gently bouncing it on the lawn will release a small amount of line.
What weight and how much is recommended?
Ryobi recommends 25 feet of .095 inch - 095 inch geni.us/wc6Jk for the spool or geni.us/hAiFg for the pre-cut.
@@FieldGuidetoDIY I had just watched another expert tell me to disassemble the head which I did and then came in to your video to find out what weight and how much. And you explained the "real" (yes I bypassed the pun "reel" - well almost) way to do it. I later ran into specs that recommended .080 and about 16 feet? She's loaded now and waiting for me. Does anyone know if you can replace the auto feed head on a 40volt Ryobi trimmer with a bump feed head?
Scrambler, i am not sure i follow you. My 40v came with the bump feed in that I bounce the head one time and it dispenses a little more line before trimming it off. Let me know if I am missing something.
How would I put it back on? Im struggling to get it back on unless I'm doing something wrong lol

"The other videos I watched only show you how to put the string in when the string has already been removed. No need to take it apart. But I was wondering about the remaining string left on the spool. This video really helped me understand the removal of the old string. Thanks for posting"

Thanks for taking the time to chime in. I beg to differ. I can’t tell you the number of folks who’ve contacted me thanking me for the head removal instructions because their line had either fallen inside the spool or had gotten tangled inside the spool. In those cases, they needed to take the head off to replace the line. Again, your comments are most appreciated!!!
