You don't actually need to remove the spool from the housing. You just line up the line on the yellow/green bobbin with the holes in the outer housing while it is fully assembled. Then feed the new string in through the holes - it will feed straight through. Equalize the string so the same amount is sticking out each side and then wind it with the tool. Viola! Easy peasy.

Thank you! I've owned a Ryobi weed wacker for about 6 years and just always loaded it my way... I happened to look up the proper way to load the string today and man, what a difference. Thank you!
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this easy to follow video! My Dad has dementia & takes things apart and forgets how they go back together. I was able to stop him from buying yet another weed eater because it was easier for him to just replace them. I was able to easily replace the string & put it all back together with your instruction. I was thinking the same thing But I removed the head anyway so could clean around the area . Pretty simple don't you know ? Blessing from the free state of beautiful Florida.. P/s I've owned many weed eaters in my life time I remember when they were first introduced .But this 40 volt electric Ryobi is by far the best I've ever used ..No cord no gas or oil, no fumes no pulling the crank cord until your arm falls off ",A big plus.."And it is 🔋 powerful .."Nice !"😁 👍
Simple not compared to the hassle free no disassembly at all to load this trimmer…why did you make a video that is 90% work compared to the actual instructions? Line up holes, run line through holes, crank spindle, it LOADS ITSELF. Wtf is this video and how many people have used it as I almost did before realizing the instructions you give here are only if you have a line lock or tangle. It can Be loaded in less than 30 seconds with ZERO Disassembly…
Perfect! From the instructions that came with the weed trimmer, Ryobi, I had no idea what to do. Perfect instructions. As soon as the sun comes out I'm trimming the lawn. Thank you, Field Guide DIY
This is one of the best DYI videos! No-nonsense, he gets right to it on how to do the task. No babbling on about this or that just clean and simple. Well done sir! I have subscribed to your channel and will recommend it!

Yet have you realized this video is 90% work compared to the instructions guide to load line? You don’t have to take anything apart..it’s an easy load system. This video has people disassembling the head when they DONT NEED TO. The line runs into one hole and out the other to leave you with only turning the head to back Load it. You’d better watch a different video or read your instructions
I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use th-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
Thanks so much for this easy to follow video. I just bought this model at HD and had no clue how to reload the string. I hate trying to decipher instructions! This was perfect!
I want to THANK Ryobi for this! I got rid of a 2 string trimmer because of the hassle of winding the head. (Sorry to tell you younger folks that the agility of your hands decreases with age. That’s why I had trouble winding the two string head without it getting loose at least twice and had to start over). When my husband brought me THIS trimmer, I pulled it out and FIRST thing I saw was the double string. I was heartbroken. UNTIL I did what I have been doing a while now and headed to TH-cam for some videos on the product. THIS brought me out of my heartbreak. So THANK YOU RYOBI and Thank You sir for posting this video that made my day. Even if it IS raining and I don’t get to try out my new trimmer until tomorrow or Sunday at the latest. Can’t wait.
You are quite welcome. I’m so glad you found encouragement here. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. Thanks so much for watching.
Hi, Donna. This is my first trimmer too. There's string in the head already but are we supposed to load new string before first use? Also I put that secondary handle a little lower than marked on the shaft. It made it easier for me to control. The recommended handle location made it feel very heavy to me.
Excellent video, so much easier to follow and understand as opposed to the terrible instructions in the booklet! When I put it together, the instructions were horrible; but it was pretty simple to figure out. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you for this how-to video! I was about to give up on my Ryobi string trimmer as a "bad product", when all this time I was loading it incorrectly. I bought the pole chain saw and the brush cutter attachments within a short time of buying the motor head with string trimmer attachment. Life happened and the products were put aside for awhile. I read the instructions for the products that would have possibly cut my foot or head off and decided that since I already owned and used 18V Ryobi string trimmers, I would not read the instructions for the 40V string trimmer. HA! Big mistake. I loaded replacement string like I would my 18V string trimmer with great difficulty only to discover that it would not cut, it just fanned the grass in all directions and the string would coil around the string feeder. Lesson learned: Read the instructions to all machinery.
Thank you for this video 😊 I just did it myself! 🤩 Since my husband passed away and now my 18 yr old son left I have to do these kind of tasks myself. After a few attempts of replacing the string line last summer, and wrongly I did make it through last season. This year will be so much easier the correct way.😄

Thank you for actually explaining the confusing part. Too many videos out there with people rambling about junk in their garage or their story about why they bought the thing or whatever. Man, just get to the point you put in the title! This was very straightforward and easy to understand, thank you. Also, bonus points for actually pronouncing Ryobi correctly.
David, thanks so much for the compliment. I've seen too many videos that waste people's time either giving them a tour, explaining why they haven't uploaded in a while, or getting folks to like and subscribe. And yes, I used to say Rye - yobi. Thanks so much for watching!
and for anyone who just wasted the last hour of their life getting stuck at 2:07 where you're attempting to reattach the spool to the head, and no matter HOW HARD YOU TRY, you - CANNOT - get it to twist into place, spray a little WD-40 on the inside of the trimmer head (you will know exactly where to spray it once you fool with it for about 5-10 minutes), and voila...! it twists.
You Mashugana! What a great tip. I personally have not had this difficulty but cannot count the number of folks who’ve reported it is too difficult to remove. However, since making this video, I made another on how to replace the Ryobi string trimmer line IN 2 EASY STEPS - th-cam.com/video/ivc7CPfGI6g/w-d-xo.html. Thanks so much for watching!
Stop and read the directions. No need to remove the head. Just line up the arrows on the head. (you should be able to see thru it). insert 10ft of line and even it up 5ft on each side. Then twist the yellow cap and it will pull the string in. Stop when you have a few inches hanging out. Done

I am the Inventor of this Easy Loading trimmer head of which I license my patent to Ryobi / TTI - You don't have to take it apart. Just line the arrows on the head up to the lines cut into the outside part and the string will push the line straight in and through the hole on the other side. And then once you have the amout of string you want, even it out with the other side, cut it and then just turn the head clockwise and it will wind up on the spool !! - I would highly recommend Eddie that before producing a instructional video you might try reading the instruction manual that Ryobi provides
Upvoted. Hope your comment gets more attention. Looked you up just to fact check whether you actually were the inventor and found your patents with the first link on google. Thank you for this invention that makes life easier!

Thank you so much for this! We tried and tried to feed the line through like the instructions say, and no matter what we did, it would get so you could just barely see it on the inside of the other hole, but it would not come through. It would just catch and pass by. We did everything except try to pull it through with tweezers. Finally said "forget that, just take the head off..." and your video helped us through that. Thanks so much for commenting Chuck. You’re exactly right. This was A way to do it but not THE way to load the string. Here’s a follow-up video I did - th-cam.com/video/Yp-FjN68xns/w-d-xo.html. Thanks so much for watching.
Thank you so much for this wonderful video. This sets a standard for what a "how-to" video should be. It is well-paced, informative, and the visuals support every step. I never would have gotten this put back together and working without you!! And now I know how to rethread without opening the entire unit! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Maureen, you are most kind. I am so glad it helped. Thank you so much for the kind words. Most appreciated!
@@FieldGuidetoDIY I am a 73 year old woman, but still cut my lawn, can plant posts for our fence, etc. However, I found that I struggled to get the string housing onto and off the drive (pushing AND turning at the same time!). I have had to rely on others to do this for me. But, using WD40 made a huge difference, and I was able to reassemble it on my own!!
Finally, somebody that gets to the point. Great job man!
Absolutely! Thanks for the view!
Thank you! I've owned a Ryobi weed wacker for about 6 years and just always loaded it my way... I happened to look up the proper way to load the string today and man, what a difference. Thank you!

Thanks for the video , saved me a lot of time trying to figure out the almost useless owners manual that came along with the trimmer.

You're a life saver! Thank you so much for this video. i had taken mine apart almost a year ago, and i had forgotten how to re-assemble it.
I am so glad that it helped. Thank you for watching!
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this easy to follow video! My Dad has dementia & takes things apart and forgets how they go back together. I was able to stop him from buying yet another weed eater because it was easier for him to just replace them. I was able to easily replace the string & put it all back together with your instruction. I really appreciate this so very much!
Shantel, you are quite welcome. Thank you for letting me know and thank you for taking care of your dad. I am so glad this video helped!
Your Father is a lucky Man and You are a Great Daughter.
I was thinking the same thing But I removed the head anyway so could clean around the area . Pretty simple don't you know ? Blessing from the free state of beautiful Florida.. P/s I've owned many weed eaters in my life time I remember when they were first introduced .But this 40 volt electric Ryobi is by far the best I've ever used ..No cord no gas or oil, no fumes no pulling the crank cord until your arm falls off ",A big plus.."And it is 🔋 powerful .."Nice !"😁

Oh, then you remember stringing together 100 feet of extension cords.🤣🤣🤣. I appreciate you commenting. Thanks so much for watching!
I can’t believe how simple this was. THANK YOU

It can
Be loaded in less than 30 seconds with ZERO Disassembly…
Perfect! From the instructions that came with the weed trimmer, Ryobi, I had no idea what to do. Perfect instructions. As soon as the sun comes out I'm trimming the lawn. Thank you, Field Guide DIY
You are quite welcome, Rita. I’m so glad I could help. Thanks so much for watching!

The line runs into one hole and out the other to leave you with only turning the head to back
Load it.

Mind blown. I've been doing this wrong my entire life. I always wondered what that extra part was for. Thanks for this well produced video.
You are quite welcome! Thank you so much for watching. I am so glad it helped.

Thanks so much for this easy to follow video. I just bought this model at HD and had no clue how to reload the string. I hate trying to decipher instructions!
This was perfect!
So glad it helped!
If it weren’t for this video I’d have never gotten the line changed. Thank you for the assistance.
Absolutely! I am so glad it helped.

Since my husband passed away and now my 18 yr old son left I have to do these kind of tasks myself.
After a few attempts of replacing the string line last summer, and wrongly I did make it through last season. This year will be so much easier the correct way.😄

Deb B, I just did a video on how to restring the Ryobi String Trimmer WITHOUT removing the bobbin spool. Let me know if this helps - th-cam.com/video/ivc7CPfGI6g/w-d-xo.html
Done
You’re exactly right Roy. I’ve since made this follow-up video demonstrating the technique you describe. Ryobi Weed Wacker String Trimmer String Replacement in 2 EASY STEPS

I tried it your way and it is a pain hitting the other side it is a great concept and the way the video shows works really well also. maybe I was doing it wrong but it just wouldn't work for me
I am having a heck of a time twisting my spool back on the head assembly. Is there some kind of trick. I just can't get it done. Thanks
@@markrotruck2900 I did, too. It so happens that the part of the assembly that shows the lock and the arrow weren't aligned, which is why i couldn't get it to snap into place.

Thanks so much. I really appreciate that. Thanks so much for watching.
I do love this weed whacker but have mercy this string replacement and taking the head apart is a huge learning curve. Trying to get that head back locked was a nightmare, and my husband is like...the Hulk 😉 and had to get the WD40 because even he couldn't get the dang thing to lock back again! The process took the two of us nearly an hour. And my hubby is quite handy so thats saying something! Thanks again!

Yes, the reassembly can be difficult. I guess they do that so it doesn’t come apart when you bounce it to release more line. That would be a pain. I hope you get it back together. Thanks so much for watching.
