Spearfishing Crete in Greece. The endless quest for dentex...

  • Spearfishing in the Mediterranean is the most difficult type of diving I've done in my life. Extremely clear water, cunning fish and not many of them. My dream has always been to shoot a dentex and I've done several trips in the Mediterranean to try my luck. This holiday to Greece wasn't a spearing focused trip but I had to bring along my kit in case I got the opportunity to get wet. A massive thank you to Antoni Eesti for helping me out on this trip and showing me international spearo hospitality! Check out his channel and the dentex he shoots, you won't regret it!

I have surfed and spearfished alone for 50 years. Getting anxious in the ocean from time to time is a normal and good thing. It teaches you to be very aware of your gear, fatigue, hangovers and sea conditions. It keeps you alive. No shame in dumping a weight belt if the swell picks up on a shore dive. You can always go back and get it later. Never give in to peer group pressure either but instead take pride in your self awareness.

Hey Dan, I believe that I am not the only one to whom the little peptalk about getting panic atacks down under really talked to, thank you tons for that.
I'am quite comfortable going far and deep when I am with somebody I trust, but once I am alone, I am struggling really hard to stay calm and therefore rather flee to the shallows... So when I see you diving alone, sometimes in poor visibility and quite far from shore I was always so amazed that you manage to stay cool through all that. It is tremendously encouraging to know, that it is not natural to be so fearless, and that not even you are completely level, particulary in a sketchy environment.
So thank you again, for the words of encouragement, they really stuck with me.

Daniel, just discovered your channel and systematically going through ALL your videos. Absolutely superb! Felt compelled to comment on this one as I'm currently off work suffering with anxiety and it sounds strange to say, but it's very comforting to know that others are no stranger to it. Being in the Sea has always been my respite from the world but recently even struggled diving. Many thanks for your ongoing work sharing your experiences and knowledge.

Hi Oli, sorry to hear you’re off work with the anxiety. It’s a right bastard at times! Rest assured with the right help and time you can get through it. I’ve been there and sometimes still get it but I have more good days than bad which is a win in my books 💪 Biggest help for me was seeing a professional. You go to a mechanic when you’re car is busted, you go to a doctor when your leg is broken and you go to a therapist/counsellor/psychologist when your head isn’t right.

Outstanding to hear you talking about anxiety and panic. I'm a university professor and we've learned that one of the biggest obstacles to our students achieving durable mental health is their reluctance to talk about what's going on with them. A discussion like this, outside of the normal forums, can go a long ways toward destigmatization. (And, for the record, I struggled with anxiety and depression when I was younger.). I also loved hearing about good hunting technique compensating for not being able to dive deep--my deepest dive is only around 25 meters and my current goal is to be comfortable hunting at 40 feet.

    • @joseph7173
      @joseph7173 3 ปีที่แล้ว

University teacher- I dont understand your math....if your deepest dive is 25 meters, and your current goal is 40 feet......can you help me understand? Isn't 25 meters a bit over 82 feet?

I sperafish in the med (Italy) from the age of fourteen. Now I'm 45. It all about technique. You choose the right place to wait, you relax, breath, dive, hide, wait, try to attract fish while you stay still. Don't keep moving your head (move the eyes). Stay hidden and don't move until you shoot. Ciao

This is some solid advice at the end of your video. Everyone takes for granted that those 10meter reefs hold an absurd amount of life due to the amount of light that can reach them. Plus, your bottom time can be ridiculous when you aren't exerting 1/3 of your breath just getting down.

Daniel thanks for the great video! There's only one way to start catching this fish...You have to accept that you will go home dozens of times without any fish till you master the Dentex technique, there's simply no other way around it, no mater how many tips someone gives you, you just need to keep on trying and learning till you get a good feeling about this fish...The first stage is that you dive and you see nothing, the second stage is that you dive and you start seeing them (that's the longest stage), the 3rd stage is that you will get your first 1 and you might have to wait weeks to months to get the 2nd one...at some point you get a good understating about the fish behavior and the specifics of the locations that you are diving and you ''ll be catching them more often. Also, they are much easier to catch at a depths bellow 15-20m (especially at the thermocline during the early Summer) compared to shallow waters! Thumbs up to Antoni, he's a great spearo and his achieves are impressive!!!

Daneil i was more than happy to see this video, since im from israel, and conditions are somewhat similar. i was more than pleased to hear such a skilled spearo such as yourself mentions the harshness of the middeternian. you can just imagine the gap when you start fishing IN the mediterrianian, vs all those abundtant & lazy fish we see people get all across the globe (especially in US and australia, god, how many!) and then we go to a good diving day....and....it's hard to find, takes skill, patience and indeed, speficic knowloedge. a few tips that may add to your knowledge:
    1. at this HOT summertime, 1 mm is more than enough in these areas., 3mm is overkill of the overkill.
    2. the places you documented were even in 'our' standards quite dead in terms of fish . but yea, this sea is way overfished.
    3. do know it's a blessing to kill a lionfish in the mediterrinan, it's an invasive species from the red sea and it oblidirates the fish in it's surroundings, having no natural enemies. if you see one, try n' kill it.. just be catious from the nasty venoums.
    4. at least in israel,we sometimes swim more than 500m (even 800m) to reach decent depths of 12-14 meters. the water are way shallow. we use sctooers sometimes or kayaks to reach such far places from land - to save energy for the ambushes.. before those distances - the reefs are too shallow and the fish are too suspicious. im not sure about greece, which is known in its abundance and depths, but the boats are a problem and they indeed scare them. most of the good spearos here dive to 10-14 meters to get decent sized fish.
    3. this particular float you took is good vs a wounded diving fish - but in terms of visibility, its too small (IMO) for boats to "really" see. some people don't care, some just do drugs on boats, with this bouy, barely anyone will see you. take care my friend - another great video, i was glad to see im not the only one having difficulties here.

In the Mediterranean there are very good spots that are infinitely better than here in the states. In the tropics though, especially the Caribbean, spearing is way different and is sometimes super easy. And the float he was using is regulation sized for a single diver. If people are 'taking drugs' then it doesn't matter what flag is out or how big, just a bunch of stoned idiots not seeing it anyways

The conclusion that spearfishing is not all about crazy depths and very long breath-holding.
It is also technique and effort.
I really appreciated your respect and humble point of view.
We all learn every day from the sea...
I am sure you will succeed at your quest only because you are willing to learn,
    You earned my respect

Very good point about the Med being for learning. Bearing your comment in mind makes me think that all my "failed" attempts spearfishing in the Med have been responsible for my "successes" in places like the Caribbean, Atlantic and Indian Ocean. I actually thought here in the UK was difficult until I tried the Med. Also, I mostly spear alone so some level of anxiety is normal, even welcome. I think when you don't feel any at all when spearing alone in unfamiliar waters is the day to ask yourself if something's broken.

You again show us that you are the master of spearfishing videos! Totally agree on the hunting technique being the main factor in success spearfishing - Here in Nz snapper are one of the hardest fish to shoot but when you learn to hunt them you can spear them with your snorkel out of the water - I must have shot 10 in the past year from the surface...Cheers!

Daniel i seen most of your videos and i like your channel. I have noticed your passion for dentex for a long time. I think you are right about searching for the fish that is the true king of the Mediterranean. I have also followed Antoni for a long time and he is the proof as you said that dentex can be fished even in shallow waters. In the last 7 years i have been lucky to fish a great deal of dentex in adriatic and jonian sea and i too believe that that fish is the ultimate test for spearfishing technique. Since you have made it clear that you are very interested in catching dentex , alow me to share some tips, altho i am sure that you might have heard most of them from Antoni. 1) dentex during June and September comes in shallow water during early morning during sun rise and later at sun set. 2) dentex can be heard in the distance, it sounds like a frog underwater. If you have ever heard that noise like a frog, 100 % there is dentex in the proximity. 3) to start fishing for dentex you need to target only that fish, meaning let the other alone. 4) from personal experience i have discovered that dentex can hear heart beat and dislike head movements, especially if you are in clear waters. 5) dentex can detect our eyes, and if we are exited it usually does not come at range. 6) to attract dentext in my opinion is more important how you assend in your last dive rather than how you dive down. Meaning that is important how you make your presence in the water. If you assend calmly and slowly , you make the fish stay around and you can dive for 20 times in a row and have the fish being there every time. 7) wen diving in clear waters in the morning , look for cliff that is shadowing the surface of the sea, because dentext like to hunt and hang around in low light. 8) posidonia is great for attracting dentex, but only of there are no rocks around, otherwise look for areas that have big rocks, like the one that you found the small grupers.
    Hope you find this helpful.
Since i know what you feel about fishing dentex, i promise you that if you do not catch one in these couple of years, i will show you the best place in the adriatic for fishing great dentex in depths from 4-14m. So the promise is that if you don't get one yourself, i will take you to the right place after two years.
Best to you and very happy that you have met with Antoni. I hope to meet him too someday.

"Peeps take note!!" also take note of Dan's sign off speech as regards to technique trumping deep diving ability! Amen to the message and thanks for it. Know your body and your limits. Dive honest with yourself and others. Concealing concerns only confuses everyone. If you are confident in your limitations and share them openly, you can push them safely under the close guidance of a tried and true mentor - and further expand your horizons. If you don’t do this, odds are far greater that your horizons will close on you.

I live in Sardegna, the dentex or dentice as we call it, is not an easy prey, here in Sardegna it can be found closer to shore and in shallower waters only in autumn and only in very remote areas.
In summertime we only find them and shoot them at shallows sometimes many miles from shore, where the sea bottom goes from 100 mtrs. or more to 20 to 40 mtrs.
Some tips about the techniques we use: a strong current is good, then at least you know what direction the fish come from, find a rock or ledge where you can comfortably lay and hold yourself, with the current "blowing"in your face, never position yourself with the current coming from behind, 9 out of 10 times the fish will com from behind.
Watch the small bait fish very closely, when they're relaxed there's no predator around, when they're nervous ( trust me, easy to see) there's likely to be some predatory fish close by.
Sometimes you can see the silhouettes of the dentex in the distance, but it 's a very shy fish, a thing that a lot of spearfisherman do here in Sardegna is the Dentex call, when waiting on a ledge underwater, you make a sound with your throat that sounds like "gu, gu ", believe it or not i've had Dentex coming in my direction almost immediately after making that sound.
I don't want to disrespect Antoni, but my free dive instructor Francesco Natale in Cagliari (capital of Sardegna) is without a doubt the dentex master of Sardegna, his yt channel is called Ciconat, you won't believe your eyes.
Great video man and good luck with your quest for dentex, you have to be at the right place at the right time and outsmart it, not easy, but you'll get one in the future, patience and always safety first are the key words, no dentex is worth bringing your self in danger. And it's so tempting sometimes, just when you're about to make your way back to the surface, the fish comes into shooting range. Don't do it, resurface, relax and live to spear another day.
    Respect from Sardegna.
