British spearfishing champion - what does it take?

- The British spearfishing championship is a fiercely contested title each year. The champion is calculated by taking your best three scores out of four competitions. In this video I break down the double header competition I dived in Cornwall & Devon. What I did wrong, what I did right and strategy. I hope you can learn something from my mistakes and become a better diver. All the fish in the competition are donated to the needy. We could certainly eat all our fish but if we can help others less fortunate than us with the fresh fish we enjoy regularly, I am for that.

As a Cornishman, it’s proper exciting that we’ve had something like this down here, we never hear about this as much as boardmasters or other competitions. Haven’t watched the vid yet but good luck!

You should hook up with the blokes from Fishing the Wild, in NT. They need someone with underwater filming skills, and you need to get back into some water with fish in it.
You won't get taken by a croc or tiger shark, because they have someone looking out from the boat. Safe as houses.
Those guys are producing some very high quality films. Not sure I’d do too much swimming in that part of the world. Loads of fish here in the Atlantic... in certain areas.

Competitions are a great way to learn. A lot of the best divers in the world have competition backgrounds.

Hi Daniel, love your videos. Big fan. Have u ever thought about about trying for a bluefin in the med? I used to see a few schools when i was in the sth of france, but never had the chance to give it a go. Also something cool was the run of dorade in a town called sete. There where hundreds of fishos with guys spearing in between them. It was mayhem. Keep up the good work!

No abalone but urchins, lobsters, scallops, razor clamps, cockles, crabs etc.

Perhaps next year. Ran out of annual leave for this year. I’ve also shot many amberjacks in Australia so not so fussed on them but the others I’d love to spear.
We will be waiting for others to be shown on that stringer then. I suggest mid spring or mid autumn days. Small blue fish and squid tend to migrate in that time of the year.

It’s all about personal preference but most speargun brands are pretty good these days. Omer, Riffe, cressi, salvimar, Rob Allen.

hi daniel i have a question for u, i have got go pro black hero 5 installed in my mask. the angles are good but sometimes i dont film very well the shoots, the fish are over of the vision of the camera and i dont understand cuz the camera is pointing well like my eyes. in wich mode do u use your go pro for film videos? i was using in narrow maybe is this the mistake?
Hey mate I always film in wide. You’ll miss the action like you have experience using narrow or medium view. I keep the lens of the GoPro parallel with the lens on the mask.

As a spearfisherman of over 30 years, I don't like competitions. When I fish it's for eating. I never ever enjoyed killing for sport. Sorry m8, no thumbs up from me. P.S. If you keep getting fishes harvested like that you'll end up like us in the Mediterranean, with no fish at all.

Hey man when you’re diving solo what kind of gear do you take with you? How far out do you swim? When I go out I get terrified that I’m gonna get swept away by the sea haha.
Just the float, some water and occasionally a snack. I’ve done 5km swims some days in competitions. It’s all about knowing your limits and what you’re comfortable with.

Love the vids Dan, but comps fly in the face of freediving safety...🤔😔 diving solo with no help in sight is scary at best .
They need to install a buddy/team rule .

What size spearguns are most popular to use in UK? 75, 90, 110 cm?
Do you eat the Wrasse ? I tried it once,did the curried fishcae thing...I don’t shoot em anymore...also they live for years.
joel fildes yes nothing wrong with wrasse. People who complain about them can’t cook or look after their catch properly in my opinion.
Daniel Mann how do you cook them then ? I used to rely on em to get me out of ‘jail’ if I failed on the other species...ha,ha...always Wrasse in North Wales.ps I wasn’t being arsey,just interested in your cooking method,the fish cake thing was all I could find on preferred methods,as they are quite ‘mushy’ fish.TBH we mostly just fry stuff in a pan with butter,which I never tried with Wrasse...any use ?

I’m using a decade old cressi edy ii. If it tells you the surface interval between dives, dive time & depth that’s all that matters really.

I personally don't agree with spearfishing competitions, they tend to take a lot of fish from a relatively small area, of course smaller competitions are fine, but once they get to a certain size they just seem like they're doing unnecessary damage to the fish population. It just doesn't sit right with me most of the time. But anyway, as always, loved the video and I look forward to more in the future!
Each to their own. The format of competitions with one fish per species are much better than a bunch of weekend warriors smashing one target species in my opinion.

Hi mate, how many competitions it takes to become British champion ?
In a year there is typically 4 national competitions. They take your best three results from those four competitions so you can drop one which is good. Scoring works that the winner on the day gets 100%. Everyone then gets a percentage of that score. For instance if the winner got 1000 points for the day and I got 780 points, I’d receive a score of 78% for the day. The best result is 300% by winning three of the competitions but you don’t necessarily have to win any of them to be the champion for the year. Just have the highest total percentage at the end.
