    I'm 25 now, but I remember spending my summers in Croatia every year growing up, the fish were enormous and everywhere. You'd see spear fishermen leave the waters with multiple 2-4ft fish. Unfortunately every year that I went back populations diminished. An unfortunate result of an unregulated fishing industry and tourism.

      Same in Türkiye mate...I've been spearfishing there all my life and the industrial fishing and the farming destroyed everything. Now the same fishermen complaining about the non-existing fish...and I hate their guts. Fuckers left a desert...

    And yes , Albania is on the rebound in many ways…I’ve crossed over from Corfu and fished few times. It’s just 2 NM crossing from northern Corfu.
    The rockfish at 9:19 is a Phycis phycis (derive from Greek word phykon meaning seaweed). Shy fish, likes to stay hidden. Tasty with soft flesh..

    What a stunning place. The spot with the "nice structure" you found around 8:20 is what I live for. Big underwater escarpments, boulders, plant life, fish - my favourite kind of spot in the ocean. Where I am they're hard to find, but I've got a few logged that I get excited to return to.

      I follow both of you guys and your amazing content, keep it up! I'm also albanian and live in U.S. I can confirm that here there are higher numbers but the quality and taste has no comparison with any fish of the Mediterranean. Also Daniel was basically spearfishing from shore, the drop, as shown, is crazy as well and makes it a lot harder too all over Mediterranean, but on the bright side you don't need a boat if you are spearfishing over there 😅

    Question, do you have the band over your flopper for the sound it makes when it moves or the movement when you move your gun around? Have you noticed it helping? Also does the band cause any problems with the flopper / shaft? Thank you just curious, don’t see that too much in Hawaii

I will do a search and find if you have updated your gear recommendations.

  • @tomcondon6169
    @tomcondon6169 ปีที่แล้ว

    I thought about talking about myself. I used to dive a lot before going to work climbing power poles, building electrical circuits.
    I dove off of Santa Cruz's Lighthouse Point, hitting capezon and rock cod. Carmel, SCUBA, I wasn't hunting, but men were harvesting moray, and there were a lot of urchin. Lots of fish, lots to see. I dove near Año Nuevo, Franklin Cove, for abalone, breeding ground for elephant seal & Great White.
    You held your hand out for a slow descent, darker and darker, don't want to lose your air, hand out and you can't see it. About 35 feet, suddenly you encounter rock, your hand comes into view as you almost collide with it on the surface of the rock. You find the current. It leads you into a channel of rock.
    There are overhangs. You probe the overhangs upside down, find a couple abalone, your abalone iron tethered to your wrist, flashlight tethered to your other wrist. You are hands free, but wave your arm, and iron or flashlight comes into grasp.
    No headlamps, no such thing as GoPro or internet. Catch an abalone, and clutch it to your beast until it sticks, harvest the second abalone. You have a gauge, but most are legal at this depth.
    You watch for elephant seal, keep your catch in a goodie bag hanging off your board. You swam out on a boogey board, bolt run through the front, to the side, a loop of chain, and a spring loaded hook to secure the bag.
    A seal will go for the board, and hopefully not nail you. A shark won't be seen coming, it will hit you floating on the surface, 60% from the front. They strike and sit back, wait for you to bleed out. Many people are able to swim ashore, get help from a friend. I've always done things alone.
    Abalone is illegal now at Franklin Cove, anywhere South of San Francisco Golden Gate Brudge.
    Back in the day, firemen, fire houses, had abalone hunts. Tons of abalone, fed the community, made money for firemen. Now you can hardly hunt abalone. They say they're fished out. Don't tell them out. Leave your abalone iron home, take a look around, they are plentiful, but they were over-fished, by good people and bad.
    Used to be, you only found crab or Lobster in restaurants live. You pointed at the crab in the aquarium, they caught it, cooked it up. Or you went to the market, picked a couple live Lobster, they wrapped them in paper, you took them home.
    Washington and Oregon changed their season, all the Washington and Oregon boats came to California, fished our waters out, then left in time for their season.
    Now, you can't buy a live crab or Lobster, they're all cooked. They catch them all, cook them all, and sell them at leisure, frozen. Frozen is sold as live.
    I remember, PG&E, the power company, transferred me to San Francisco, I remember PJ"s. Menu sure, but fish on ice in the front window. I remember prawns a foot long.
    There are a lot of spiny lobster. You can't buy them. They are shipped out of the country, or to the tables of organized crime, central banks. You can dive them in San Diego. It's an expensive sticker for your fishing license. I'll close here. My way, don't focus on the past, focus on now. I want to find a place to seek a woman like me, blue-eyed like me, rH negative like me, I don't want her to have to take drugs because her body is rejecting the body of our child. I want us, and maybe her parents, to find a peaceful, warm part of the year, great place to spear fish, and an affordable tract of land to raise food.

    Awesome awesome excellent video Daniel! A shore dive from a beach club has many advantages (and disadvantages) namely, you can use their facilities to wash your gear and freshen up when you finish, not to mention the easy access in and out of the sea, and on the subject of missing the Sargo, oh I can relate dude, I can relate, many a time I could already see it in my dinner plate and I miss, that's why I use a 6mm shaft or 6.3mm at most and always overpowering my speargun because you need that extra bit of speed at the expense of a bent shaft, but that's the Med...
    Thanks for sharing 👍
    Keep em coming !

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m definitely going to go a thinner shaft next time round. The 7.5mm is great for hitting power but not the fastest.

    • @MegaEvoluzione
      @MegaEvoluzione 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DanielMann you don't need that much hitting power here, speed is way more important IMHO.
      And I find that galvanized steel resists bending a bit better than stainless steel, unless s/s is heat treated really well and has this brownish color, I'm sure you know how to tell 😀

    The forkbeard, Phycis phycis, is not good on the grill. Filet it, than cut it in chunks. Use paper towel to remove some extra moist that it has when very fresh. Season it with salt and black pepper, and let it sit on the fridge for a couple of hours. Use corn flower to make a crust, than deep fry it until it gets golden brown. Very important: after removing it from the oil, let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes, so it won't be too hot and for it's interior gain more consistency. Season it again with salt, pepper and a splash of squeezed lemon juice. You can have it with tartar sauce or just plain mayo. Absolutely delicious.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A mix of both 5mm jacket with 3mm pants or 5mm pants. Water temp was around 22-23°C with a cold thermocline.

      @@DanielMann let me ask a follow up question. You’ve dove the Med in several different countries. What would you suggest as an all purpose suit thickness? My primary dive territory will be around Rome, Italy. Thanks in advance!

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately the water temperature varies so much and also the type of diving you are doing. 5mm is a good all rounder but not enough for winter and possibly too much for summer.
