  • Music of the Moody Blues:
We're living in a land of make believe
And trying no to let it show
Maybe in that land of make believe
    Heartaches can turn into joy
We're breathing in the smoke of high and low
We're taking up a lot of room
Somewhere in the dark and silent night
    Our prayer will be heard
    Make it soon
    So fly little bird
Up into the clear blue sky
    And carry the word
    Love's the only reason why
Open all the shutters on your windows
Unlock all the locks upon your doors
Brush away the cobwebs from your day-dreams
No secrets come between us anymore
    Oh, say it's true
Only love can see you through
You know what love can do to you
We're living in a land of make believe
And trying no to let it show...
Maybe in that land of make believe
    Heartaches can turn into joy
We're breathing in the smoke of high and low
We're taking up a lot of room
Somewhere in the dark and lonely night
    Our prayer will be heard
    Make it soon
    So fly little bird
Up into the clear blue sky
    And carry the word
    Love's the only reason why...
Open all the shutters on your windows
Unlock all the locks upon your doors
Brush away the cobwebs from your day-dreams
No secrets come between us anymore
    Oh, say it's true
Only love can see you through
You know what love can do to you

Everything the Moody Blues do is just far superior than anyone else! Job Done! Not only is the music absolutely beautiful and the lyrics heavenly but Justin's haunting clear voice and the bands harmonies are like nothing else! What passes for music in the music business now is just a sad joke! Moodies should be played constantly on FM radios all over the world, not just Nights in White Satin!!!!!!!!!! Moody Blues for ever!!!!

I'll tell you why you don't hear this music on the radio. It doesn't celebrate the consumer culture, the degradation of women or other forms of violence against the body and spirit. It's honest and sincere--qualities which too many tastemakers deride in their attempt to seem hip. And, finally, the Moodies, for all of their drug use, were never "bad boys": They didn't trash hotel rooms or get arrested for DUI.
All they did was make beautiful music like this.

When music receives categorizations of "thinking man's music" and other pablum, it will turn off those segments that want simplistic meldoy and refrain, something that they dont have to "think" about when they listen to. We do this to ourselves as a society to our own disadvantage. Rant over, or I could keep going. This song wails.

Agreed. Fwiw, it's a phony musical institution imho. Bands like the Moody Blues among many others (may) be inducted long after doing so would have any real significance, while plenty of inductees that shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence with "rock & roll" or even "real music" have made it in rather the moment they could. Some inductees never bothered showing up &/or have plenty of criticism for the RRHoF, some of it hilarious, some not, but nonetheless worth checking out. Bruce Dickinson once said "if you put music in a museum, then it's dead".

Lyrics as these can only be written by true romanticism. "Open all the shutters on your windows. "Unlock all the locks upon your doors. Brush away the cobwebs from your daydreams, no secrets come between us anymore." Such a gentle and warm song. I admit that I am a romanticist, forever in love with being in love. I remember my college mentor introduced us to the Moody Blues. Love their music - relaxing, energizing, tells a story.I may be sick, but I have been playing "The Land of Make Believe" over and over the past few days. The voices flow, and blend so well, the arrangement has so much to it, and the tune just takes one to some other place. I close my eyes and rock to the rhthym; zone out.

My all time favorite album and this is my favorite song, followed by "Forever Autumn". The Moody Blues have brought so much peace and joy to my life. Truly, "love's the only reason why".

How did Joan Jett get in the R&R HOF ahead of the Moody Blues?
Not a knock on her, but compare their bodies of work, and their is no comparison!
    Is it about record sales?
    She sold 10 million
    They sold 60 million

      You really want to know?
      It's based on votes
A lot of people are not very heavy into progressive rock look how long it took Rush yes to finally get in there.
This band was mocked for years for the neoclassical string garbage not using real band members and mellotron in a whole lot more.
Now don't get me wrong they had a very strong fan base they still continue to however when it came to voting the votes just weren't there.
Where as Joan Jett with her hard rocking anthems that gravitated towards people that enjoyed it the party sounds and a whole lot more just gathered the votes.
Me I'm a fan of both artists but I do understand after the huge duration of getting yes and rush into the Hall of Fame all the years and especially one of my favorite bands Chicago the same thing
But it is what it is it's the way people vote and who gets the most votes gets in

Love that first artwork from 1930 ! If you can get your hand on the sacd quadraphonic mix of the song , you must listen to each of the 4channels separately through the whole system for a real thrill . Especially the front right channel.

This is the song that made me fall in love with the Moodies. In 1972 at school, a 7th grade Cuban émigré presented a slide show of her journey to the school. The soundtrack "When You're a Free Man" followed by "Land of Make Believe" accompanied beautiful and moving pictures of family back home and of her new life in Miami. I guess I was a pretty sensitive 6th grader. This recollection still brings tears to my eyes.

My older brother by two years turned me on to the Moodies when this album came out on our BSR McDonald turntable. I notice that when I play them on a jukebox people are bored. I saw them 9 times in concert in Cleveland and it's suburbs and always treated the day as a celebration (and would dance throughout the concert from second row seats in front of Justin). What memories, thank you Moodies!

An unbelievably underrated band. So, so great, yet not given the respect they so richly deserve! The best example I can think of is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which the Moody's are not enshrined? Wait, what? Donna Summer....Madonna....ABBA....Trying to stay positive, but, something's wrong here!
