I made a video a while back talking about if Mars could become an "Independent planet." Just like how we have nations today, it seems likely that we will expand that same idea one day to extend beyond our planet and maybe even beyond our solar system. Such isolation causes for new generations to have a new cultural self image, especially if they are born into it and had no say but have to live like the people who did have a choice. If people on Mars were to cut themselves off from Earth because they could sustain themselves, would we really want too risk sending people there just to force them back under our control? If we on Earth can't challenge their claim, would the fact that they can uphold their communities there be enough to recognize they do own it for themselves? It's all very fascinating! I made a video a while back talking about if Mars could become an "Independent planet." Just like how we have nations today, it seems likely that we will expand that same idea one day to extend beyond our planet and maybe even beyond our solar system.
Such isolation causes for new generations to have a new cultural self image, especially if they are born into it and had no say but have to live like the people who did have a choice. If people on Mars were to cut themselves off from Earth because they could sustain themselves, would we really want too risk sending people there just to force them back under our control?
If we on Earth can't challenge their claim, would the fact that they can uphold their communities there be enough to recognize they do own it for themselves?
It's all very fascinating! Great video Michael, you always get the cogs turning.

In Halo's expanded universe, especially the novels, they deal with this idea. In the Halo universe, the outer colonies in the furthest planets inhabited by humanity rebel against the earth government and are constantly trying to become sovereign. It's an interesting thought since, like you said, it would be similar to how colonists on earth also eventually tried gaining independence.
