@@arnav9009 that's like saying above ground pool with 12" holes around the bottom will have dry earth around it. @@dal8963 Ok, let's compare your pool with holes in the bottom to a pool with no bottom. Obviously, the ground is wet under both pools, but which is more wet? The pool with no bottom. I've also always wondered why we look at maps from the north side up. I guess my lifelong question has finally been answered. Now I can die happily. Goodbye all.
Muslim maps used to have Mecca at the center and South at the top. It really all depends on what the culture of the cartographer holds important. Things like which needle on a compass they followed can contribute.
Vsauce beautifully articulating how the limitations of our perception are in fact important to understand when trying to understand the natural world. Socrates would be proud.
Henk de Tank Well, to be fair, the class retard usually isn’t spreading pseudoscience and paranoid narratives about the government’s and the media’s lies.
Well, they don't believe it even IS a sphere in the first place. Hence why their flat earth map is easy to make. They're not distorting anything, because there was never a curve. ...in their mind, anyway.
Is that guy going to order anything? Yeah he got a sundae. He hasn't even touched it, has he just been sitting there, talking to himself? Shh,i'm learning.
Well, good teachers use this technique to maintain the level of attention of the class when explaining something. Just slip a little story, a "fun fact", something that goes a little "off topic" and kids will, in almost every case, pay attention to you to hear what you're saying and then you can go back to the main topic. This works on adults too. I had a teacher who did this with History lessons, he normally would randomly say a fun fact about spies and it would catch my attention again.
The question is, why didn't he order baking soda? Because if he did order it, it's now come. So it's no longer ordered, but has been ordered so he hasn't ordered it. He has simply had it.
Whenever I see the maps of Africa showing how big it is, I wonder "Who thinks it is so tiny?" Does no one use a globe? I may be a geography geek, but I mean, come on, this is basic stuff.
Yeah, i know that. In my room i have a huge map and a globe. When i saw my friend how big the greenland is bign the map, he was like wtf. Yeah, thats some pretty basic stuff.
Jake Chudnow's Moon Men is the only appropriate song when asking profound philosophical questions. I like to imagine that time travelers will have brought a recording back for the likes of Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, etc.
You didn't mention the main advantage of the mercator projection: It preserves angles; which is incredibly important when you're at sea and want to know which direction to sail to reach a particular point on a coast. That's why it became so popular!
Brilliant! I love your videos Michael, always brings some new interesting info every time! Speaking of time. Who decided that the day would consist of 24 hours and not for example 12 (one of our current hours would be a half one etc) and why did the people choose that?
It'd be nice to see a video about that. A short answer based on what I found is that ancient Egyptians used to divide the day into 24 parts of varying length (meaning the length actually varied between days, not only that the lengths were unequal), Greeks decided it'd be better for calculations if all the hours were of the same length, and the increasing amount of mechanical clocks in Europe during the 14th century made this system commonplace. Hope this satisfies at least some of your curiosity while we wait for Michael to hopefully make a video on the subject :)
Correct me if Im wrong but I think it has to do with the best divisible way to number stuff, you see 60 minutes in an hour is great because it has a lot of "divisors", and to mark a day you need a cycle, night and day, so if you put an hour as half an hour or just night and part of sun light as a day and the other part of sunlight as another day you would ruin the cycle or the divisibility of the numbers.. Sorry for the shit english.
the number 12 represented the day and 12 for the night in Mesopotamia like we choose base 10 after our 10 fingers they chose 12 off the twelve segments in your 4 main fingers on one hand. That's why we base so many things off of 12 still today even after the majority of the world converted to base 10. Also metric time was at one point going to be introduced but 10 hour days were much too long and 100 hour days even worse. (60 is another common base number because it is the 12 segments multiplied by the 5 fingers.)

Actually the universe is flat. Not Earth itself. Try again.

Hello
Henk de Tank
Well, to be fair, the class retard usually isn’t spreading pseudoscience and paranoid narratives about the government’s and the media’s lies.
Well, they don't believe it even IS a sphere in the first place. Hence why their flat earth map is easy to make. They're not distorting anything, because there was never a curve.
...in their mind, anyway.
@@robinchesterfield42 - The flat earth maps don't reflect back to reality distance wise at all.
I'm rewatching your videos in 2021, and they are quite addictive
I saw this guy at my local diner, he just talks to himself and orders a lot of different desserts but never eats them.
That moment when your geography teacher shows this video during class. lol
+IHadNoIdeaThatGoogleAllowedYouToChangeYourNameIntoSomethingRidiculouslyLongAndStupidLikeIDidHere

He did a good job then.
I never realized Greenland's and Southafrica's sizes until now, mindblowing!
Hey cutie pie
You mean just Africa...
gurdijak because it is the comment section where people can post damn comments
Bojan Tomic no, I meant Greenland and Southafrica in comparison
ah ok
I love how the dessert on the table next to him keeps changing with each cut back to him. lol
Question: What does Earth look like?
Answer: THIS DUDE DISCOVERED A FRIKEN' RAINFOREST WOOOOAAAHH!!!!!
Is that guy going to order anything?
Yeah he got a sundae.
He hasn't even touched it, has he just been sitting there, talking to himself?
Shh,i'm learning.
5:03 he ordered a globe!
How come every time I watch a vsauce video, I learn something that has nothing to do with the topic?
+John Smith but you learn something don't you ?
Welcome to Vsauce XD
It's great isn't it?
you learn more than what you came for here ,
in school it takes you 5 years for that ..
what a fucking waste
Well, good teachers use this technique to maintain the level of attention of the class when explaining something.
Just slip a little story, a "fun fact", something that goes a little "off topic" and kids will, in almost every case, pay attention to you to hear what you're saying and then you can go back to the main topic.
This works on adults too.
I had a teacher who did this with History lessons, he normally would randomly say a fun fact about spies and it would catch my attention again.
Love how this went from light, to maps, to a motivational phrase
Why did he order baking powder?
Crack?
why didn't you?
Or did he?
He gonna step on the sugar booger he got keestered bruh.
Penitentiary rules in effect
Dami Bang greenland is smaller, it is just a geometric vision, or however you must say
sry i ment the reverse, greenland is big on the map,but small on the globe.
I never got taught geography in school nor will I be.
Luke DS I mourn your loss.
Every time I watch a Vsauce video I go in looking for just one answer but come out with even more questions god damnit.
Welcome to human curiosity!
These questions are answerable.
That's what's known as "The Vsauce Effect".

Vsuace, I am eagerly waiting for the next video. It's been 13 nights and 13 days since you last uploaded a mind blown video. When is the next one?
I know; I check every day.

Vsauce videos are so timeless
You didn't mention the main advantage of the mercator projection: It preserves angles; which is incredibly important when you're at sea and want to know which direction to sail to reach a particular point on a coast. That's why it became so popular!
He sort of did, around 7:22
But it doesnt show the shortest route to get there 8:17

"It's a tradition to come back to these masterpiece once in a while"
This is easily the best channel on youtube
Brilliant! I love your videos Michael, always brings some new interesting info every time! Speaking of time. Who decided that the day would consist of 24 hours and not for example 12 (one of our current hours would be a half one etc) and why did the people choose that?
and who choose that a minute should consist of 60 seconds and not 100? wouldnt that be much easier to handle and calculate?
*****
because we have ten fingers, so we live in a base 10 world.
check out the youtube channel numberphile for more info
the number 12 represented the day and 12 for the night in Mesopotamia
like we choose base 10 after our 10 fingers they chose 12 off the twelve segments in your 4 main fingers on one hand. That's why we base so many things off of 12 still today even after the majority of the world converted to base 10. Also metric time was at one point going to be introduced but 10 hour days were much too long and 100 hour days even worse. (60 is another common base number because it is the 12 segments multiplied by the 5 fingers.)
The first minute of this video makes me want to listen to Pink Floyd.
Why?

@@theloudcloud283
Or is it?
pff that's what you think :p
It is. It's subjective. Even time.
Imagine a species of aliens being able to see our world differently because they see more colors we can't.
There isn't a lot of colors that we can't see. Which is only a few. Because most "colors" are shades
Even a lot of animals would see it differently; many are accustomed to seeing ultraviolet or infrared
Average Johnson how exactly do you know that? Is it not possible that we not able to see or discover other colors. ?
