    made my first custom keyboard recently and I'm super happy with how it turned out. Built out a Keychron Q1 with Alpaca switches, filmed and lubed (205g0 for stems and housing, 105 for springs), Mekanisk aquamarine screw in stabs (basically a version of durock V2's). Tape mod for the PCB and also put small strips of tape between the top and bottom half of the case. it took a long time... it was expensive, but I'm so happy with the results, just feels creamy and smooth and it sounds amazing. Full build including tools, lube and all was about 500$, but it was so worth it.

    I went for the GMMK Pro with a polycarbonate plate and the Aquaking V3 switches, Durock V2 stabs (holee modded) and MT3 keycaps. And I must say I really love how this keyboard turned out, the sound and buttery smooth feel of it is absolutely amazing. It's also very stiff (which I like a lot).
    It came with extremely overlubed stock stabs, which is why I decided to replace them for the Durocks and maybe save them for later. Removed all the lube with some alcohol and I also applied some band aid on the PCB.
    The PCB itself bended a bit, because of the plate not fitting the durock stabs properly. But after assembling the board everything is perfectly fine. The metal top and bottom really keep everything properly alligned and it doesn't cause any problems at all.
    The only issue I have with this board is the software and specifically the RGB lighting. Both are very basic and could use some improvement.

  • @wolf-xf6hf
    @wolf-xf6hf ปีที่แล้ว +7

    One thing I’ll say about lubing is that if you get Akko switches(best budget ones imo) most of them don’t even need to be lubed and lubing doesn’t actually help too incredibly much at least from what I’ve found.

The video was clear, informative, well-presented, and entertaining, don't get me wrong, the problem is entirely on me. Between working a full time job and going to school, I quite simply do not have the time, energy, or patience to spend that much money on tools and supplies to build a board from scratch. (Not to mention that I have no idea where I'd find space to do this, between tiny house, clutter, and pets getting into everything.) I don't do small, fiddly work all that well and if I didn't have a dog eat an escaping spring I'd count it as a miracle. So yeah. How do you make sure your plate will match up with the pcb? I know it's not solely the board size, because there are lots of different layouts. Just a note, you missed a pretty important thing, that's the pins of the switches, because for example last year I almost bought 5 pinned switches, instead of 3 pinned ones. :) I know you said this was a quick video to just get us into the vibe, I'm writing it for the new guys in the comments, to look out for that.

    love the video, but i have a problem, i am german and i cant really find a keyboard with the fitting layout nor keycaps that look somewhat good for ö, ä, and ü (and for what would i wan tto build a custom keyboard if i dont like how it looks). Sooo, can anyone help me with that?

      Edit: my bad, I double checked and there’s no “ü”, and it’s probably wrong layout, Candykeys has kits but they are out of stock it seems
      I’m pretty sure Taihao has some Nordic layout keycaps with those keys, sorry if it turns out to be not what you’re looking for.

    im brand spanking new to this (as in i didn't go to bed at a reasonable hour last night because a random 'mechanical keyboard' video popped up in my feed and i thought, yep, i have time for one last video! ha! haha! HAHAHA!) ! I thought I was the only one that had some weird obsession with "the feel of the keyboard" (according to the wide eyed, tight lipped expression my husband gave me in Best Buy 32 minutes into my rant about butterfly keyboards on apple laptops) but its so nice to know that not only am I NOT the only one with the weird obsession (take that husband!) but I can escape this madness and get myself a real keyboard with some freaking weight to their keys! Oh my bank account is going to hate me. :)
    I hit subscribe. I look forward to the diss track. can I request a diss track about The Mistake that is apple butterfly keyboards. I have some.... feelings.... i'd like to hear fully expressed by someone that's not me so I feel less alone in the world.

    Thanks for your videos. The showed me the actual state of intelligence of the cool keyboard modding community. Instead of doing something useful on their own, they feel themselves as great engineers by spending money on useless stuff as switches and fancy key caps and pretending to improve working keyboards by changing switches and brush them with lube. This is just ridiculous. I think I'm too old for this.
    But beside of that, you are doing a great job with your videos.

    i recently upgraded my razer blackwidow ultimate with some gateron frankenswitches and sadly had to solder but after lubing every part of every switch, the soldering was honestly a welcomed repose. although if you arent comfortable with soldering hotswap is great. but seeing it all come together with all the work i put into it and hearing my old clicky razer greens swapped with linears made it so worth everything. And who knew razer keyboards could thocc. sadly costar stabs but oh well not much i can do ab that past lubing them

I can't do 65% lol so I got the NJ80 lol(steel plate) and the candy shop keycaps from kinetic labs, this took me months to decide on what to go with but your videos made things so much easier, awesome channel thank you!!
