As someone that really likes clicky switches I appreciate your reminding people that this hobby is about your personal preferences. I started out with Model M boards and I think that has influenced my preference towards clicky switches or strong tactile switches. Thank you for continuing to support beginners, I will likely recommend this video to my nephew after Christmas. He likes Lego's so there is a good chance he will enjoy putting a keyboard together.
Same. The wood trims on the one HE keyboard that's been popping up lately had me considering it despite not really wanting an HE. This case is gorgeous and I hope more like it continue to get made.
i actually built my first keyboard today after being inspired by your aliexpress keyboard challenge videos!! admittedly i saw this upload after actually building the board, and im waiting for the final few artisan keycaps to arrive for it... but it was such a happy and satisfying feeling plugging it into my laptop and seeing it worked and knowing id built it!!! i chose the gmk87 following one of your aliexpress videos because i loveeee the screen and im gonna animate some of my own gifs for it!! really cool hobby to get into and building keebs is so fun.. i can def see myself doing it again. thank you for inspiring me hipyo!!
Thanks to Hipyo, I decided to mod my keyboard a little bit. I did some research and watched a lot of his videos and decided that I wanted the tape mod as well as O-Rings. My keyboard is an MX Mechanical Mini and after this mods it's *Chef's Kiss*! Thanks Hipyo!
its crazy to me that i first entered this hobby because of the pewdiepie keyboard vid you made years ago. ever since then ive been along for the ride and learning from all of your beginner friendly guides. i remember watching you, glarses, and switch and click alot. it makes me so happy to see how much your channels have grown and that the keyboard hobbyist community is still alive and thriving. thank you for always being a reliable source for keeb reviews and for helping newbies get into this hobby. never stop doing what you do hipyo ❤
Thanks Hipyo! You are the main reason I've become addicted to trying out different switches, keycaps, etc.... I thought I was a silent linear guy, and yet I'm currently using Gateron baby kangaroos and I really like them. I'm using them in a Keychron Q6, and compared to the gamer marketed mainstream boards I've had before I'm blown away with the quality you can get building your own for about the same price. Never mind going much cheaper if you like, I'm well aware the Keychron is not a budget option.
*Hey Hipyo! Hall effect keyboards actually sound good now!* Take the Nuphy Halo65 HE for example! May I say MIGHT sound as good as a regular mechanical keyboard, it sounds pretty amazing! Love your vids!
Bro, that keyboard sounds so good. I thought I'd never say this since I never really gotten into keyboards until now. I want to make my own but I'm legit satisfied with my first mechanical keyboard from Royal Kludge, I was thinking about just further customizing that board
wow...the elusive KL-90, my dream keyboard. I wish the group buy situation didn't go so wrong and we could still get our hands on them in aluminum without paying crazy resale prices
My local Best Buy have keyboards on display for testing out the switches. Although there is a bit of difficulty for newbies as the keyboards there are mostly gaming brands with their own fancy name of their switches.
Nearly thought Nola wouldn’t make the cut 😮 Very interesting, the best I’ve found to choose switches it to buy a couple and test them out. Not very cheap, but better than buying 80 of one kind and then finding they don’t sound good 😓
I spotted that sneaky LLT Screwdriver and half-expected you to be one of the sponsored ones too. :D Now I should go back to finding switches for the barebone I have for half a year already... analysis paralysis, it sucks.
That may be because cherry MX were originally designed to be tactile switches with hysterisis, not clicky. The click jacket of cherry MX whites was lubed so it wouldn't make as much noise but due to the demmand for clicky switches, cherry made blue switches without the lube resulting in a very unpleasent click (more of a plastic-ey rattle). Switches like clicky alps on the other hand used click leaves which produce a much crisper, metallic click. Combined with roomy plastic cases of the 90's, those keyboard can sound quite amazing.
@ are there and switches that will give me the feeling of a really satisfying click, or a really big tactile bump, but… are more on the silent side, or creamy, marbley side?
This slander against clicky gang! No surprise from a *linear* fan, I suppose. jk, this is a wonderful video. I really want to delve into making a full custom board at some point and this seems like a great beginner guide!
Unpopular question... whats up with the lack of full sized options? Its not about the numpad. I geniunely prefer how large keyboards look. Wish there was more variety to match different tastes tbh
Hey Hipyo, you introduced me to my first mechanical keyboard. I decided to go with the a keychron to start with. I've ended up having weird situations with double typing keys. (When they're pressed down, I get more than one character out of the press.) Are there ways that you troubleshoot individual switches or do you just replace them? This is a deep topic, but since you're the expert, I wonder if you have suggestions here. Thanks and have a great day!
I know you don’t like HE keyboards but we definitely want some reviews on them, some are very generic, some are very unique, they’re starting to get their own switch variety etc
From all of those beginner mistakes, i'm really curious if you could make the most expensive keyboard just with a bunch of bad decisions and beginner mistakes.
I recently got myself a custom keyboard, and honestly, it’s not as customizable as I expected. I really needed a 100% keyboard with macro keys, but I couldn’t find one that fit the bill.
Since you’re not a fan of clicky keyboards, do you think you could make a really good one? Personally, I’m not into clicky keyboards either. I tried one of those clicky gaming keyboards once and wasn’t a fan at all. But now I’m curious. Could there be an ultimate clicky keyboard? One that’s actually good?
I got a switch tested from Amazon Vine, but it's just an aluminum brick. I have some very thocky linear switches in a hot swap keyboard with gasket and foam and they sounded cheap in the tester
I want a keyboard with additional macrokeys, to the left side. Very few are made now, and I liked my Logitech one, but not finding any out there. I know I'm one of the 'few' who like them, live by them, and still use them. Personally, every make-your-own keyboard maker looks EXACTLY the same to me, just different colors. So, before I select a keyboard key, I want to find a keyboard layout I wat. Getting an additional macropad, which most are just NUM keys isn't what I want either.
What are some good brands for keycaps? I don't want to accidently low-quality keycaps Another Question: What about keychron pre-lubed stabilizers? Are they worth it or should I get unlubed ones and lube them myself?
I want a Thock or creamy board, but some how I keep accidentally buying clacky / click keyboards, because usually the gamer ones come with the clicky keys, and they were the only ones in my budget at the time. But i need a new board now, so i'm a slurge on a higher budget board around $100...well higher budget for me
Hello! Hipyo Tech I enjoyed your video a lot and learnt more about keyboards. I am on a budget; is there any quiet keyboard that is below $30? Or is it not possible?
Just recently became interested in building my own keyboard and was wondering, where are some sites that have quality keycaps with that "shine through" feature? Cuz I've been looking everywhere and they either aren't compatible with your standard switch, the reviews tell of a flimsy/thin feel, or they don't come with enough color variety which is pretty boring imo. I'm at my wits end on where to look and could really use a lead in the right direction 😩
It really did sound like heaven
HeaVen???!!!
Ive been looking for a low budget keyboard have any suggestions? Like price range 25-40 US dollars
@Js_a.boyplayin.RL3 yeah I think he made a vid about budget keyboards

I shall discriminate
I'll stand today that Model M Keyboard is GOAT, whether IBM or Unicomp, there's nothing quite like a Model M.
Clicky keys feel the best imo… sound on the other hand is kinda weird
Kailh Jade
@HazePotato I have a keyboard with Kailh box jade crystal switches that I really like.
Love the woodcase

Huge timing. Just bought a barebones Monsgeek M1 V5, Haimu Heartbeats, and some triple shot keycaps!
Triple shots ? Never heard of that
@sagirem it's for when there's sublegends in a different color
Enjoyed the Haimu Heartbeats myself, although it's nowhere as quiet as TTC Frozens
Not that I mind, at least no one's mad at my typing now
Just got my barebones m1 v5 and paired it with oil king v2s and some amazon double shot caps. sounds like heaven
Nola looking for attention at the end was too cute

I definitely need a keycap buying guide. Just bought a Keychron Q6 Max and wouldnt mind experimenting with different profiles
I’d love one too! I have a Zoom 75 Tiga on order and feel good about switch choices, but will need key caps too.

I know it's totally subjective, I still am not the biggest fan of their key chatter
I just put the Gateron dual rail nebula switches on my gmmk 3 pro HE and it sounds like “HEAVENNNNN”
Most of them do have that but not the halo 65 that is a god tier keyboard @@HipyoTech
@@paramjeetsinhravalji is the gmmk pro actually a good choice or you don’t suggest someone to get it? Did you buy yours as a bare bone or prebuilt?

That Nola tap at the end, though. ♥️

Wait a minute, does the editor do all the magic? I have been deceived for so many years.
I currently rock a Keychron V3 with Morandis. It's a pretty solid board. Also, fellow Resolve editor!
You gotta make a playlist for helpful vids like this 😭

Next year, this video will be called: Even your mom can build her first custom keyboard.
That keyboard case is perfect and I need it. next paycheck that thing is mine. (after a 90-120 day wait)
Lol "maybe you've only tried mx browns where the bump is a scratch from sand..." described me and my 10yr old log G610 perfectly 😂

If you are noob at building keyboards like me, just get steam and install Mechanical Keyboard Simulator when it comes out
I literally JUST finished building my first keyboard like 2 hours before this video dropped😂
Klicky Kings rise up 👑
I love the way a clicky key feels, but not the way it sounds
That may be because cherry MX were originally designed to be tactile switches with hysterisis, not clicky.
The click jacket of cherry MX whites was lubed so it wouldn't make as much noise but due to the demmand for clicky switches, cherry made blue switches without the lube resulting in a very unpleasent click (more of a plastic-ey rattle).

jk, this is a wonderful video. I really want to delve into making a full custom board at some point and this seems like a great beginner guide!
I've been hoping Barrett will do a traditional layout like 84-key 75%, or at least a TKL. Weird exploded layouts aren't my thing.
I really like the akko botany switches
I thought wooden cases would never be balling, wild that it’s possibly a kilmat foam diff.
Unpopular question... whats up with the lack of full sized options? Its not about the numpad. I geniunely prefer how large keyboards look. Wish there was more variety to match different tastes tbh
"back in the day we used to lube switches by hand" I hear as I'm using this video as background noise while I'm lubing and filming my new aqua kings
