      I was told of some supplements that supposedly benefit the kidneys. Astragalus, chitosan, also a mixture of apple cider vinegar and baking soda. There's also a product called kidney stuff, have you happen to hear of any of these?

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MikeDee29 These types of supplements can help some people, but they do so by addressing specific issues. I tried many of these, spoke to so many doctors and researchers about them, and in general, they do nothing for most people. But again, they could be helpful with specific issues for some. They could also interact with medications - so ALWAYS check with your doctor before adding any of them. You will find all of the ones you mentioned in my medicine cabinet. ACV I take to help with being obese, SodiumBiCarb for upset stomach, Chitosan to boost my fiber intake, etc. I use them each occasionally when needed. My daily supplements include ProRenal+D with Omega 3 (a Renal multivitamin), Renadyl (Renal Probiotic - big announcement coming in Feb withe my results of 90 days using it), B-complex, Vitamin C, CoQ10, and a few others my doctors have recommended. I can't overstress how important it is to work with your doctor and don't self prescribe. When you do ask your doctor, bring along the reason why you are considering them - let them see it so they can better respond. Choose quality sources - such as medical websites. Many doctor website with some interesting data are publically available - they are just harder to understand due to the medical jargon - but very helpful.

      @@DADVICETV Hello! So, I haven't understood too much from this video, only to talk to your doctor for the right quantity of salt, potassium etc. But for ex, if I don't have a dr? I just found out that I have a Gfr of 52% and in this period, I cannot any blood tests, go to a doctor etc. I started keto and IF 16:8, but with keto all my electrolytes are flushed and I have to suppliment. Can you tell me, when you were around this number(52%) with your Gfr, how many grams of salt, potassium, magnezium did you take daily? And water, 2L? I only have one kidney from a suegery a year ago and from here is my GFR little, not from a diabet. I hope you can answer me. Thank you very much!!

      Knowledge is the key! Most doctors spend little time helping educate us about what we can do to slow down, stop, or even reverse some of the lost kidney function - but for many people this can be done with diet and lifestyle changes. After being told I had "no chance" of getting better, I was determined to prove the doctors wrong - and I've done it!!! Best of all, I started making videos after I saw I was getting better and staying better - so there is a lot of information within my channel. Some of the videos can be challenging to watch, I'm a talker at times, but they always have some information, motivation, and inspiration in them. You can do it and the Dadvice TV community of kidney warriors is here to help!

    Why do doctors say kidney disease can’t be reversed? Going from stage 5 to 3 is incredible! That means that it could be possible to go from 3 to 1. But why do they says it can’t be reversed??

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I think it comes down to a number of reasons. First, they were taught and trained to say that. Second, the physical damage can not be reversed and they are not making the distinction between GFR and physical damage. They treat those as in sync values. It is possible (I am proof) to have destroyed your kidneys down to a single digit GFR and then use diet and lifestyle changes to regain lost kidney function (increased GFR). My GFR has improved greatly, but the damage is still there and will be there forever. But with a higher GFR, my body is filtering well enough to prevent any symptoms and to allow me to live a normal healthy life. Too many doctors think "Amount of kidney damage = GFR". That is not how it works. It is more like "kidney damage and bad habits = lower GFR". Then there is a whole other dark side, that I have no evidence impacts doctors, but comes from the following the money. Is there an incentive to get more people on dialysis? Does it help them to get more grants? Does big pharma play a role in it? So many questions with no easy answers. The good news is, not all doctors think this way. My last Nephrologist appointment went horrible - I've gained a few pounds and I'm referred to another Endocrinologist. He seems unaware of my kidney issues, has no clue of my website or treatment strategy, does a lot of test ($$$) and finds nothing. Last Tuesday I saw my PCP - he knew exactly what the cause was without any test. I had added Yogurt to my diet and some other carbs. He did labs just to verify (results came back on Thursday). I stopped the yogurt and carbs and have already dropped 4.6lbs this week. And the labs showed my Calcium was very high, and my glucose was slightly high....carbs and yogurt. Some doctors just get it, which is amazing when you find those ones.

    • @merakli07
      @merakli07 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DADVICETV Hi James. You say that you stopped eating yogurt. Is it bad for people with kidney disease? I understand that your concern was the extra calories. Yogurt has always been a part of my daily diet (I eat one cup every day) Should I be concerned? GFR=30, Creatinine=2,39 (So I'm borderline between Stage 3 and Stage 4)

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@merakli07 No problems for most people with yogurt. I am more sensitive to sugar and have problems processing calcium easily. Over the holiday I expanded my diet to enjoy more things and ended up gaining some weight. My labs from last week also show my glucose at 104 and my calcium at 10.4 - so I'm backing off on those and my weight it already starting to go down.

      That is great that she does that. Most doctors seem to forget this and rob us of the opportunity to try. While most people will not change their diets for better health without a reason, being faced with kidney disease is extremely powerful and can be the reason people will make the changes....if we can just let them know it may be possible and how to do it. I was lucky and given a 2nd chance at life. I have made it my destiny to help educate, motivate, and inspire others to make those changes.

      @@izabeau1953 Exactly. If more doctors would be more supportive of their patients, talk to us in a way we understand, be clear about exactly what we need to do, and refer us to dietitians - I believe the number of people with kidney failure would decline. I believe this change will happen - as more of us get informed and raise questions, doctors will start to notice. In the last year I've gotten a lot of attention from groups wanting to know more about what I am doing. I have nothing magical - it really comes down to eating right. The challenge is knowing what is right for YOUR body...which changes as we get better or worse.

    Way to go James!!! Looking good. All I was told was to lay off salt as I do retain water. I cut out all processed foods and cook all my meals now. Honestly James I dont think doctors keep up with modern medicine. The nephrologist told me to eat more plant protein and follow the food guide which when you have ckd is impossible. Go figure. Glad everything is working for you. I am in Canada so health system has gone to pots since a new govt took over.

      My first Nephrologist - while I was in the ICU getting diagnosed with kidney failure - told me to just avoid popcorn, salt, and to drink more water. That was her diet to help me. Oh, and that I'd be dead in 45 days without dialysis.
      We must educate ourselves so that we can be our own advocate for better health care. And the more we learn, the more shocking it is to understand how little modern training these "specialist" have gotten. The 2 greatest resources for me have been my family doctor and the dietitians I have worked with. Now if we can only find a way to get these "specialist" to connect up with those other doctors. :-)

I am also willing to be most people with high blood pressure haven’t had their doctors talk to them about sugar and the importance of limiting it. 2020 is going to be an amazing year for helping get more information about kidney disease. I have tweaked my style to be more focused on a single topic per video and more about the facts. I will still stand up on my soap box, but I will try to use the comments area more for that to keep the videos shorter and on topic. Amarnath Mukherjee starchy carbohydrates such as those found in potatoes, rice, wheat, corn, beans, quinoa, pastas, breads, etc.... these are all highly mucus forming. Anything that has to be cooked to be more eatable. Where as carbs found in fruits are not mucus forming. They’re mucus binding. Arnold Ehret wrote a great book on it called “The mucusless diet healing system” where he explains this. All fats whether in plant or animal form
      Are mucus forming. Slowly glueing your pipes shut. Animal fats have a waxy cholesterol that’s even worse to gum up your pipes. The same reason you don’t pour bacon greaSe down your kitchen sink drain pipes is the same reason you shouldn’t pour it down your arteries/pipes

    Drinking Distilled water is an absolute game changer. The body cannot assimilate the inorganic minerals found in salt. Inorganic sodium chloride/NaCl is slow death. Distilled water is what they use in kidney dialysis machines. Low TDS (total dissolved solids) water, Reverse osmosis or distilled water are a game changer. Distilled water is most ideal due to the lack of dark, wet filters that are present with RO water which make an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. But, any low tds water is better than nothing to get yourself in the cleansing game.

      I actually add salt to all of my meals.....or more accurately, both of them. I eat 2 meals a day and HAVE to add salt. Not for taste, but to hit my daily minimum. I do not purchase highly processed foods and I always look for low sodium versions of things I do buy. My labs are always on the lower side for sodium and I have had a few times I've been below the standard range. Having the right amount of sodium is critical for a lot of your body's functions, but it is a rare problem to not be getting enough due to how much is included in the traditional foods we eat.

      I'm actually planning on doing a video on this. In short, I thought I had food poisoning. Nothing stayed down - NOTHING. I drank water, I threw up. My vision was blurred, I was so weak I had trouble getting out of bed and walking to the bathroom. I couldn't check the mail, felt sick, and my blood pressure was crazy high (I couldn't take my meds since they wouldn't stay down). My family doctor treated me and told me to come back in 2 days if I wasn't better. I only got worse. When I saw him, he told me it was something serious and I needed bloodwork. He told me to go straight to the ER. As I approached the ER I collapsed. I was then in and out of consciousness. I was in a room with IVs in both arms, I had machines all around me beeping. I was admitted to the ICU and the next morning one of the many different doctors told me I had renal failure. I had no clue what that was. I also was certain it was food poisoning. After a week in the ICU my GFR got up and stable to 13 and they let me leave. From there I changed my life and have only improved. That was back in 2018.

I was given a second chance at life - no questions about that - and sharing my journey and helping to educate others about how important and powerful diet and lifestyle is to fighting and beating kidney disease is my way of being thankful for this second chance, my way of paying it forward. I grew up an Air Force Brat and my parents where huge into volunteering and helping, so that is instilled deep inside me, but my kidney failure experience made it even more important to me that I leave behind some type of positive change in the world. I plan to be here a whole lot longer, but I want my kids and others to not have to face what I did. When I do get around to telling the entire story, it's going to be pretty powerful. What is sort of cool is that I have video recordings of me trying to talk about that moment.

      Wow! Those first few days in ICU must have been frightening. You had a heart attack and kidney disease. YIKES! Yes you need to record that video for all of us when you are able. It is very emotional I am sure. I am so happy you are doing so well. You are a very determined man and that has brought you back to health.

      @@DADVICETV I posted about my son. as far as symptoms go, he didn't have any. at age 28 he is very healthy 165-170 lbs. it wasn't until his vision blurred he went to an eye Dr. and the Dr. told him to go straight to emergency. To find out the capillaries in the back of his eye were bursting do to high blood pressure.(238/135) otherwise he felt fine. Now he is on dialysis 3x a week and blood pressure meds. We believe it won't be forever. We are believing for healing and complete restoration. But until the manifestation happens...He is on a low salt, potassium, phosphorus and protein diet.( what ever that really means.) Vegan maybe?? this is all so new to us. If there is any insight to getting off dialysis ASAP. please if you can let me know . I know you are not a DR. or claim to be . my heart breaks for my son.

    Hello,
    is beyond meat good for kidney disease?

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While both beyond meat and impossible meat are very high in sodium, I prefer Beyond due to it not containing soy. Soy is not bad, but some people (me) have negative reactions to soy. If you eat either of these, keep an eye on your sodium totals throughout the day to not exceed your daily targets.

    • @farshid71
      @farshid71 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I read that stage 3 we can consume between 1000 mg to 4000 mg. Seems kind of high ? The beyond has 690mg sodium.

    • @farshid71
      @farshid71 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My mistake beyond has 390 mg of sodium. Which seems low.

      Your daily sodium minimum and maximum will be set by your dietitian and they will depend on a lot of factors (including your latest labs and how active you are - those who exercise more intensely will get a higher daily maximum). Most people I have come across seem to be in the 1500-2500mg range, though I know some that are higher. I try to greatly limit sodium in food I purchase so that I can control it and pick the source of the sodium (like Redmonds Real Salt or Pink Himalayan Sea Salt).

    All my Doctor says is don’t add salt because everything already has salt.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your doctor is right that everything has salt. When I was first diagnosed I had too much sodium in my system, and kidney failure to boot, so my doctor told me to add no salt for a while. After about 4 months my sodium levels got too low, then I added Pink Sea Salt. Now I make most of my food, so I'm in full control of the amount of salt I add. I tend to under-salt my food, so I have to push myself to get a little more to keep my sodium level within the right range. It has become pretty easy doing it myself - and it really lets me enjoy salt again.

      @@nelin4948 Check out Renadyl - I will be posting a video in late February of my labs from taking it for 90 days straight. I've used it off and on during 2019 then spoke to the manufacturer and learned that taking it for 90 days is needed to start seeing the max benefits. I got an early look at my results last week with some early labs (about 75 days in) and things are looking really good - BUN and creatinine down, GFR up...all over the holiday where I allowed myself some extras in my diet. I get my final labs in about 2.5 weeks then will make a video about it. But get a jump on it - Renadyl can be that edge you need. You can read about it at www.dadvicetv.com/renadyl

      I'm not sure why you find that funny. My health care team consists of my Primary Care Physician (Family Doc), Nephrologist, and Renal Dietitian. When necessary other types of doctors are brought in, but everything is funneled to my Family Doc who makes the final decisions. This prevents conflicting treatment and keeps everyone I see in sync. It's easy to establish, just be proactive and tell everyone making decisions about your health who to give recommendations to. It's like a football team, you need a quarterback or else you're not going to win.
