    Hello Sir , your videos are very informative and useful. Beside this I would like to suggest few which evry kidney patient must follow.
    1. Avoid food with excess protein like meat products. Avoid alcohol and carbonated drinks .No excess salt.Try a pinch for a single meal , if possible use Himalaya salt i.e rock salt. Limit the use of all types of cereals, if possible avoid it.Avoid potatoes, underground vegetables except onion and garlic.Avoid corn, beans , peas too becoz it has excess protein.Most important avoid tea and coffee.Try foods, vegetables and fruits with least protein , sodium, potassium and phosphorus.
    2. Use: apple, papaya, cherry, all kinds of berries. Vegetables- cucumber, red bell pepper , ridge gourd, pointed gourd cabbage , cauliflower .
    Prefer White rice or its flour, wheat flour ,Semolina.
    Prefer green tea or black tea .
    Use sodium bicarbonate i.e baking soda (used for eating pupose)half spoon in a cup of warm water 3 times a day for 2 weeks. It comes in tablet form as well .consult your doctor before u use it.Very helpful to lower creatinine.
    3.Do not do heavy exercise .Prefer yoga or aerobic exercise.
    4. Maintain high Blood pressure and diabetes to normal level. Follow up is necessary.
    5. Do not take OTC painkiller, antibiotics or any other medicine of your own.consult your doctor which are safe for kidney patient.
    6. Control your body weight. Regular monitoring is essential.
    7. Limit or avoid too much processed foods .
    8. Believe in yourself and faith in God and confidence on yourself. After all Health is wealth .Google for more information which may be fruitful and informative.

    Thank you, for this video. My kidney disease comes from kidney stone's. I'm not diabetic and do have hypertension but I take meds for it. My doctor kept me on dialysis for 10 years now and never told me about my GFR or nothing. So I'm getting ready to take matters in my own hands from now on because I'm not suppose to be on this machine from the beginning.

      Sonya,
      You are finally waking up, look up on TH-cam, Apostle Leroy Thompson, videos on divine health. You HAVE to read upon your health issues.
      I did and will never regret it.
      Doctors are good but not God. Read PS 139, slowly he's talking about you. The most SERIOUS we make is not working with your doc. with knowledge, so they put you on MEDICATIONS!!!!!. Which have serious side effects. I had a doc. get seriously angry because I told him dialysis was not in my future. He did a monkey dance, I walked out. He is a nephrologist. So I am wary of blindingly following drs. That dispense pharmacy like candy, FULLY AWAKE.

    At age 71 with GFR of 54, wanted your take on Low fat liverwurst. 41mg phos 150mg sod 35mg pot per 1/4 inch thick 2 1/2 inch round slice. I love this in moderation but wondering if
    there is a catch I am not seeing since the protein shouldn't be that much more if any than muscle meat? BTW, tried the impossible burger the other day and sat there with a big grin

    I wish doctors had lists of groups that are as up beat as you !! All they do is send me to nutritionest & diabetes's class's. Those are boring & always say the same thing. I've been diabetic for 10yrs (plus) & found out I had CKD 3yrs ago. Looking back I get a kick out of the Doc's when they say " You didn't know ? ". I try to keep up beat, but it gets hard. I wish there where groups of like people to talk to. Dr's think your getting depressed when you ask for help, no just need to talk to someone who's in the same boat as me, not rehashing those generic classes. Thank you for being up beat & optimistic about things. Its good to hear !!! :)

      Thanks for sharing Jane - you actually made me laugh. While my profession is marketing, I love public speaking and do a lot of training. My class surveys always comment on how much people appreciate my high energy and approach, compared to the boring and depressing styles of others. I'm looking at what it would cost to get a message board setup where we could all talk (message/chat) with each other and share ideas, recipes, tips, labs, etc. You are so right that our community needs a place to talk and share. There are also a lot of people out there who need the support of others - or else they may do something not helpful. That is a very high priority for me right now - figuring out how to build a better community where we can better communicate with each other. I'm also going to be doing live videos/classes in the future - I'm looking at the platforms available and how they work to see which ones I may be able to do. TH-cam is great in that it is free, but those watching have to type their questions and comments. I'm hoping to find something that could allow 2-way voice or even 2-way video. I hope to get a solution for both of these nailed down in the near future.

    I just started watching your videos and it has given overflowing hope! Right now I just found out that I have cysts in my kidneys ( May have PKD) from a different CT scan unrelated to kidneys. So I went and had a renal panel test done and I was really worried. My GFR was at 67. Low for my age. I had already started on the keto diet and then I heard that any kind of carbs can feed the cysts so I gave up on all carbs no sugar, no grains no baked stuff etc. But then I started having flank pains and a discomfort to go. Well I may have kidney infection ( I’ve had chronic stones) and got my 2nd test back and my GFR went 7 points lower!! After all my effort of intermittent fasting and cuttting out carbs my GFR went lower! Real discouraging! And my creatinine was a little high. So no more protein for me. But this was discouraging. I am making an appointment to my doc on all this but it hazme bummed me out.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had a similar experience when I first went on Keto. Check out my GFR graph at www.dadvicetv.com/my-kidney-labs - you can see my Keto diet impact in June. My doctors had to adjust my low carb diet to be extremely high fat, low protein (plant based), and ultra low carb. Part of the problem was that I had my gallbladder removed about 11 years ago. I had never mentioned that and didn't realize it would impact my diet. The good news was that with the tweaks I regained my lost GFR and kept improving. Our path is always going to be a roller coaster, we just need to use those dips and learning moments to keep up going up more and more.
      Make sure you join me next Tuesday the 25th at 3pm EST (New York time) for my results from using Renadyl for 90-days. Lowered my BUN and Creatinine over the holidays when my diet was pretty bad. www.dadvicetv.com/renadyl

    so you think doing some exercises such as Walking 30 minutes every day is not useful in improving kidney function?

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We need exercise and that is part of the lifestyle changes. Doctors recommend getting 30 minutes of light activity 5-7 times a week. It helps with blood pressure, weight, stress and more. It could be walking, swimming, playing ball with the dog, aerobic exercise - anything that elevates your heart rate.

      that is my #1 - we need to make sure we are following our doctors orders and taking the medications our body needs as directed. I used to be bad at always taking my meds, I might stop an antibiotic a couple days early just out of being lazy. But with CKD, we need to make sure and take all of our meds and only make changes when our doctors tell us. Thanks for sharing!

      You will want to get a copy of your labs - they will have a few important numbers. Your GFR (or eGFR) along with any protein in your urine and your age will give you a good idea of how your kidneys are doing. Check out the videos I have with Dr. Ro at DadviceTV.com - he shares great information about how AGE is important when looking a your kidney function. Too many doctors ignore age and will say an older person with a reduction in kidney function has CKD, when really they kidneys are working normally for their age.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sad to hear you fell off the wagon and your GFR dropped. The good news is you should be able to recover back to where you where. While we will face CKD for the rest of our lives, I believe medical science will deliver some solutions IN the next decade that will help filter toxins and waste products from our blood without dialysis - allowing our kidneys to focus on the other duties they have (controlling blood pressure, helping our bones, etc.). By exercising conservative management we can delay or avoid dialysis long enough for these medical breakthroughs. When you feel like cheating on your diet, remember, we are buying ourselves time for these breakthroughs. Then we can celebrate for the rest of our lives.

      I will be doing a video about this soon as we approach Flu season here. Chances are your recovery may take longer since we are already dealing with a weakened overall system. My doc has told me to get my flu shot while I feel healthy and that if I do get sick, to increase my daily water intake. Washing hands, using hand sanitizer, and staying clear of sick people can help reduce the chances of getting sick. I take hand sanitizer with me as well as wipes and use those for door handles, shopping carts, and other public things people touch often. So far I have been lucky and not gotten sick since being diagnosed. I also always get a flu shot each year.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Has your doctor confirmed you have stage 2? A higher muscle mass as well as intense exercise will naturally increase creatinine levels. Your doctor will most likely want to get test at different times to verify your kidney function. Exercise is good for you and your heart, so it would not be recommended to stop. Find the underlying cause and address that first to stop additional damage, then work on diet to avoid things which can cause a reduction in your kidney function (such as avoiding Ibuprofen, heavy drinking, etc.). The diet at stage 2 is very different that stage 4 and 5 - at stage 2 you daily min and max will be higher to a standard healthy diet. Do keep an eye on blood sugar and blood pressure so prevent additional or accelerated kidney damage. This is also a good time to see a dietitian so that you can stay ahead of your kidney function - depending on the underlying cause, you may live your entire life without any symptoms thanks to early detection. Good luck!

    Today Erik got his labs back. One month later , Creatinine 3.6 to 2.9. GFR. 15 to 19. Two months ago it was 12 GFR . For a month now he has had only three days of beef or chicken. Mostly following very low animal protein, low sugar, and dairy. Some vegan fake meat, stir fries and almost all his 73oz of water a day. Weight stable at 157. We think his kidney disease was due to high blood pressure at young age. Had bypass at 54. No diabetes thank goodness. Electrolytes all normal range👍. Sept well will continue with no animal protein and get protein from plant sources. We had training for PD and even had supplies delivered and catheter in place to start when the results of diet stared changing outlook. Next week they will decide what to do with the catheter. Remove or "bury" for now. Will continue on this eating plan and pray for continued good results as long as he can. Thank you James for your advise and help.

    Reducing stress on your kidneys
    Reducing inflammation
    Make these changes:
    1: take all meds as directed (diabetes and high blood pressure)
    2: low carb diet
    3: intermittent fasting
    4: drink water 1/2 body weight in oz.
    5: life style changes... no smoking... don’t drink heavy...avoid ibuprofen
    6: getting excersis
    7: de stress ;de stress ;
    de stress

    Hi James, nice video! I have a question, I'm in stage 3, but I also have a bad back, my back doctor recommended that I use a heating pad on my lower back every morning for 20 minutes, so that makes the pad be in the general area of my kidneys. I don't put the heat up very high and it does help my back and help me get thru my day with out much pain, but my question is, is that heat causing any problem for my kidneys? Thank you for your reply.

    I'm at 45% right now....3rd stage kidney failure. I'm not overweight, active for my age, not diabetic, blood pressure been treated and managed for years, never smoked, do not drink alcohol, but, yet I have kidney failure. I even like water too. I'm trying to decide now do I want at my age to prolong my life by dieting and giving up things I enjoy. I mean I'm older than u by many years(71), so, no matter what I do my life is on its last journey. I maybe have 10 years left whether kidney disease or heart failure, etc. I do not stress over having kidney failure. I'm just deciding if I want to spend what few years I have left enjoying life or cinch the belt and start dieting to add another year or so. In another words....is it worth it?? I will probably end up in a nursing home anyway, alone and staring out of the window. Yes I'm cynical but I'm being realistic.

    James, I would like your thoughts on something. At my last checkup I got the printout that doesn't seem to have a GFR reading anywhere. Weird. But the creatinine level IS recorded at 1.5. I know that is in the normal range. What is the likelihood that a normal creatinine rating is a good indicator that the GFR will be normal? Or is there no direct correlation? Appreciate all your videos so much.

    • @annettegenovesi
      @annettegenovesi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One Naturopathic Doctor on TV claimed the GFR wasn't that significant. He said it represents a total of several factors but apparently it is not a specific biological indicator of kidney function.

    Be careful with cast iron pans because accumulating excess iron can damage your heart! Many processed foods have extra iron added plus it’s often in your multi-vit too so you can easily get too much. Your body has no way to get rid of excess iron except by bleeding. There are those who theorize that that’s why women have fewer heart attacks than men do but that after menopause their rate goes up to match or exceed the rate in men. You can give blood every few weeks to get rid of excess iron. I’ve stopped using cast iron and use stainless steel instead.

      The standard recommendation (assuming you are not on a water restriction) is to drink 1/2 ounce of water a day for each pound you weigh. So if you weigh 160lbs, you would drink 80 ounces of water a day to stay properly hydrated. When it comes time to get your labs (blood drawn), make sure and spread out the water you drink over a full day. Drinking a bunch of water just before getting labs doesn't give it time to get into your system and properly hydrate you. Hope this helps!

      Thanks for your support! It is difficult for a doctor to look at a website - the internet is full of so many that are scams, incorrect information, and even dangerous tips. I can fully understand their frustrations when looking at sites online - it's extremely difficult for me to log into Facebook anymore. Nearly every group I belong to is full of one bad/completely wrong/dangerous recommendation after another. For Doctors it is even more difficult since they can't speak up.
      Part of my own goals for 2020 is to make DadviceTV more educational focused (from a patients point of view) so that it can stand out more from the others out there. I'd like people to realize right away that it is not one of those "Buy my PDF eBook Kidney Cure" or "Eat Baking Soda and Pickles to Cure CKD" type websites. I also want Dadvice TV to help bridge that communication/understanding gap between patients and doctors, and help encourage more engagement with dietitians (one of the most valuable resources in fighting kidney disease).
      Sounds like we both have great goals for 2020! Good luck on your weight loss goals - keep me updated!
      Funny thing - I always remember you when I see a post with your name. I once worked for amazing guy named John Holt in Seattle. He was like Steve Jobs of digital automotive, except everyone absolutely loved working with him due to his positivity. Your name always reminds me of him and how much I really enjoyed working for the company he founded. I'm still at that company, almost 12 years later, but he retired in 2014 and is still talked about within our halls. Because of that I always smile when I see your name!

      Wonderful! When our body has a need, supplements can be helpful - but too many of us are using supplements when we don't need them and it is putting more stress on our bodies. I review ALL supplements with my health care team before adding any. As a matter of fact, I had a company reach out to me yesterday to try their product for preventing kidney stones - I declined since it does not look like something my doctors would approve of.

      The standard formula doctors in the US use for how much water to drink is .5 ounces per pound of body weight. Another way they say that is to take your body weight in lbs, then divide it in half, and drink that number in ounces. For example, if you weigh 160lbs you would divide that in half to get 80, so you would have a daily target of 80 oz of water. It is important though to check with your doctor on how much you should drink - some people may need to drink less to prevent water retention (swelling).

      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The supplements you should take will depend on your labs and what your body needs. No supplement can fix or repair kidneys - they just help you where you have a shortfall. For example, I take ProRenal+D with Omega 3 as a multi-vitamin to help me get the nutrients my body needs ( www.dadvicetv.com/prorenal ) and I take Renadyl, a probiotic, to help my gut health ( www.dadvicetv.com/renadyl ). You should always talk to your doctor or dietitian before taking supplements - taking something you don't need can be harmful (and waste money).

    Have you ever tried baking soda to help improve kidney function? (sorry if you already talked about it in a video, I’m new here)

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a very common question - and so many people pass Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) off as a "cure". I haven't created a video about it, but I have researched it and even did a test (with before and after labs). There are some people that it can help - and 650mg Sodium Bicarbonate tablets are very affordable and easy to purchase over the counter. BUT, and it's a big BUT (cue to the music), it only helps people who NEED it. Taking it for no medical reason, except random hope, isn't going to help and it could even cause issues.
      Supplements are important with dealing with CKD - but you always have to have a reason for each supplement. If you need vitamin D (which most CKD patients do), then D3 supplements can help (when recommended by your health care team). If you need the B vitamins, your health care team will recommend them. Same goes with other supplements - from CoQ10 to Alpha Lipoic Acid.
      Now there is interesting research on Sodium Bicarbonate and all of the results end up with the same conclusion: There may be something there and more research is needed. More research needs to be done to determine when and how to use it beyond how it is currently used. I gave it a try - I got labs, took it daily for a month, then got labs. My doctor told me it would not improve anything. The labs showed he was right - I actually had some problems and had to stop it.
      Now a LOT of people will say it works, and there are lots of youtube videos telling you to take it daily (usually mixed in water instead of in the easier to swallow tablets). I have not found a single one with labs to support this works - NOT A SINGLE ONE. If this worked, people would have labs to show it works and doctors would be using it - they can prescribe it.
      Again, it does look like there is something there, but more research is needed to determine when and how to use it. And by "When", I mean not just based on kidney function, but should it be taken before bed, 3 hours after eating to avoid interfering with nutrient absorption, etc.
      Hope this helps. This is an extremely common question and I should create a video about it one day - though I am certain the comments will be filled with negative responses from people who just can't accept facts.

      This comes up often in the comments. Based on my limited knowledge or supplements and my experience with CKD, there are very few that can actually help. Those that do help are good when targeting specific issues - such as a natural diuretic helping with fluid retention. There is no way to “repair” your kidneys with current medical science, but some supplements can help in specific areas that can help improve your GFR and other challenges.

    Several years ago my doctor told me that my kidneys are failing. That’s all they said and I wasn’t at all concerned. A few weeks ago I was told to see my doctor for a Wellness Exam. They took blood and a urine specimen. The sheet they gave me when I left (with the results) said my kidneys were at #3 and it’s critical. Well, now that #3 woke me up and now I’m concerned, but I haven’t received any information on what I’m supposed to do about it. It’s a good thing I’m 91 years old, I probably won’t have to worry about it anyway, that’s what they are hoping!

      Most likely your at Stage 3 - which is a vary large range and not a bad place to be, especially at your age. Stage 3 covers what used to be 3a and 3b , so you could be at the top end, the bottom end, or somewhere in the middle. At stage 3 you'll want to look at your diet, and you may have a couple bad habits you should look at breaking. For example, no smoking and no dark colored sodas. You'll want to avoid using NSAIDs - things like Ibuprofen. A visit to a dietitian can probably give you almost all the information you need to help you not need to worry about your kidneys.
      While stage 3 is serious - my mom has been at Stage 3 since the early 90s. So don't let it stress you - and it sounds like it isn't. I recommend a visit with a dietitian to help you keep your kidneys at stage 3. Good luck and congrats on being 91!

      Glad to hear that - but it was you who made all the changes. Do you currently work with a renal dietitian?
