    I tend to play most Uwe games solo. My favorite is probably Fields of Arle, but I play Nusfjord more because it's easier to get to the table. I enjoy his games, but some of them have fairly significant setups which does deter me from getting them out more often.

    Hallertau is the game I play when I want to play an Uwe Rosenburg game, but me and my sister have played A Feast for Odin a little too much lately. The latter game is absolutely better, but we play it a _lot_ so it can get old.
    Also, it's Norwegians that makes Feast for Odin really shine - it might well be an expansion could do the same for Hallertau in the future.

    I am a huge fan of Uwe's big box games. The only game of his that I didn't like was Feast for Odin. I played it again and again masochisticly hoping to discover whatever it was other people saw in it. I discussed it with mates and strangers alike, live, on Reddit, BGG and Facebook to try and rub myself against their excitement. I still think the cards there, although preposterously numerous, are bland and unexciting and that polyominos should be banned from heavy games ✌
    Your review of Hallertau makes me wanna play it, and if the solo is a good s you describe, provably own it as well.

  • @zenosAnalytic

    Hallertau is the one Rosenberg game that I actually enjoy. It gets too mathy, but I feel that any concerns with card randomness could be reduced by "draw 2, keep 1."

  • @bsademax5135
    @bsademax5135 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think your conclusion pretty accurately reflects my own opinion of the game. The cards are definitely too swingy to make a multiplayer game feel competitive, but it's a crunch and enjoyable solo, even though it absolutely is overshadowed by AFFO in that regard, as well.

  • @mahna_mahna
    @mahna_mahna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hoo boy, we really came out of this with different perspectives. I really bounced of Feast for Odin (even with the expansion) and most other big Uwe games. Caverna was good, but a pain with other players. But with Hallertau, I actually enjoyed one of his big games for the first time. And we played with three, all of which really liked the game and wanted to play it again. And I say that even having gotten stomped by the leader!
    Also, I have to say lines like "A Feast for Odin is still undeniably a better game" sound a little like "my opinion is the objective truth." I know you'll be saying "no, I didn't mean that." Well, maybe you will. I've watched the channel long enough to know you realize that enjoyment of games can be pretty subjective. But those lines don't come across that way.
    Appreciate the video, though!

  • @andrethannhauser6302
    @andrethannhauser6302 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    the game just needs an expansion that firstly just dives deeper into the beer theme which the Hallertau region is famous for and secondly it needs to find a solution to reduce the luck of card draws (e.g. just make it draw 2 keep 1 or just show the top cards of the decks so you see exactly what you could get.
    AND it needs a minor balancing tweek because when you go victory points card heavy you will hardly win against a player who goes the way of pushing the house to the max.
    other than that, I enjoyed my yestersay' 3p-game and I really enjoy the solo mode.
    concerning the solo mode: you should play that you never use the card on the first turn which removes the workers from quadrant 1....it's 100% worse to start that way.

    I can't disagree more, to be honest. Hallertau certainly IS one of Uwe's best! Along with Caverna, Agricola & Nusfjord. I'm not sure what the fascination is with Ffo, which I like, a lot...but I don't LOVE it like the aforementioned ones.
    Hallertau is so much fun because the cards/decks make each game so different. 33 plays and not stopping...

      Normally I don't wade into "experienced strategy" discourse, but I played this game A LOT, and have managed to get a score as high as 139 and feel confident in saying that no matter what your plans are, you absolutely can still get wild random draws that push your score into the stratosphere.

    • @nchlsrdmr

    Big Uwe fan here and love FFO. Randomness of the draw is my biggest criticism as well for this one . Giving up a worker or two in hopes you get a victory point card you can fulfill has cost me across many games. That could be the difference in you not getting the resources to move your house out far enough to even getting the base set of rewards in that board. Someone mentioned draw 2 and keep one which sounds like a viable solution.

    Uwe fans! Take this review with a massive grain of salt. Efka states multiple times in it that Odin is an objectively better game and that opinion is objectively false. Hallertau is excellent even and especially beyond its solo mode, easily one of if not Uwe’s actual best. The cards aren’t as random as is implied here and elsewhere, they mostly reward diversification and punish specialization. This game is a must have for any Uwe fan and probably for many who aren’t as well.

    I find I disagree with your main criticisms of the game with the cards. They are managed into 4 different functional decks so you have some control over what you are choosing to draw. there are also several replacement decks for two of these functional decks to change the game experience. The volume of cards, therefore, is much more controlled and arranged functionally and not just a big random mess. I love the crop rotation system though there is definitely awkwardness in the first few plays with the resource storage. The fact that solo is the same rules is awesome so I agree with you on that! The movement of the board pieces is good but Im not sure about it being the best method to represent progress for the community. Not sure how I'd replace it though!

    I almost feel called out directly, but I'm sure you got a lot of Proof of Stake messages and response, but I'm honestly more upset that the discussions around NFTs provides a lot of opportunities for nuanced talks into the multitude of ways that our financial systems and mindsets fail us.
    Instead discussion around NFTs typically default to simplistic editorialized reductions that don't really inform anyone of anything factual, it's just "to the moon", or "NFTs are evil and dumb because" without nearly enough attempts to communicate any depths to those thoughts.

    • @NoPunIncluded
      @NoPunIncluded  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi,
      I have no idea why you think this is targeted at you, but I suspect its because you commented something like this before? Rest assured, you are but one of the many people who say this exact thing, almost verbatim. The number of times I have heard “proof of stake” far exceeds singling out one individual on the internet.

    • @cameronross8812
      @cameronross8812 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you spend a lot of words rehashing the first thing I said in my comment... and absolutely nothing regarding the point that took up the bulk of my message.
      I think this absolutely "NFTs are evil, full stop" is not giving the topic the depth of discussion that it legitamately deserves.
      Killing NFT's doesn't kill defi crypto, it just cuts out an avenue that creatives were using to get paid through it. NFTs are a symptom of much much wider socio-economic issues.
      You and many people are reducing this into something where the people who need to be reached the most, will just tilt there head, say "proof of stake", and ignore your opinions on the matter.
      We need the dissenting to listen to outside voices otherwise we're all doomed. The tone of the discourse is worth more than throw-off jokes, and knee-jerk demonizing simplifications.
