    Good test. An old racer who didn’t have the luxury of 3d digital advanced curves back then showed me a neat trick which helps of you hand great top end power but pinging at the lower end. If you’re using plugs with an extended tip, and even if they’re a colder heat range, they ping easier than a non extended tip plug. By swapping to a non extended tip plug you can often resolve low rev pinging and fix the entire advance curve to being optimum both low and high and get the best of both worlds.

    Working with some Kent and TwinCams, I stopped with the standard distributors years ago and went to the DIY Megajolt and later to the comfortable 123 system(usb). With both I got very good results - smoother running and better fuel economy. It helps smaller batteries when having less advance at starting revs

    Agree. Some years back, like about 8, I began to install and sell some of the more affordable 3D programmable due to the major advantages with those, especially on "complicated" engines. But, about 4 years ago I stopped selling them outright and went over to the 123 BT and only use 3D programmable units on stuff that I get to finish myself. Reason is, that no less than 2 customers almost killed their engines due to TOTAL lack of understanding the timing table. With the 123 most garage mechanics are able to understand and program it so the engine doesnt kill itself. It is most likely far from optimum, but they are driving.

    Hi Graham. I love all your practical advice and the back to back testing of different components and setups. I would be very interested to hear your thoughts on torque plate honing. Some engine builders say it is a must others say it's a waste of time. What has been your experience and would you recommend it?

      I've never used one, that said im about to make one for a pinto i understand the reasoning for one, but even a torque plate wont replicate the internal stresses when the block is under maximum load in use. my current feeling is most of the time its probably pointless, but cant hurt, in a few cases with a really high horsepower engines it might be worth it.

    This shows that a fully mappable ignition is worth fitting to an old engine because that old relic of a distributor is not up to the job. My next build on a 1600 Kent will be with a Maxxecu engine management system.
    Not a wild build, just a turbo with low boost (5-7 psi).

    Not sure it would improve my 1931 19bhp Austin7 engine

    Great video as usual Graham, I would be interested how a Nodiz system compared to these two. What are your thoughts?

    Hi mate interested in building a 2.1 pinto fast road engine for my capri, looking for anything above 180bhp, how much ball park would you charge to build one up Inc labour?

    • @PenguinMotors
      @PenguinMotors  ปีที่แล้ว

      very build is different and cost will vary wildly depending on your starting point but somewhere around £5000
