Yep, man that sucks. I did this years ago with a 308 winchester. The recoil was most impressive. Blew the primer. At the time I was nervous, but after i got home and thought about what had just transpired I was sick. If you are having one of those days were the phone is ringing, visitors or just an off day, don't load!
Catch a calm day, it could save your face!
    Just saying !
    Great tips by the way!
    Good luck at your match!
May you have the smallest groups, all day long!

On the ear muffs, if you find a good brand that is compatible, they make replacement pads for pilots that are awesome. You can even get them on Amazon in gel, memory foam, suede, pleather, lycra, just about anything you want and trash the cheap plastic OEM pads. When they're on your head all day you have to be comfortable. Happened to talk to my buddy today and he has an original set of those dies Speedy made for him. Even he didn't know the 'S' stood for Speedy.

    G'day,
Impressed that you shared your mistake, it is not easy to do.
I was reloading 357 mag on Sunday. The powder dispenser count was one higher than what I finished with in my loading trays, When I did my standard "look inside the case" to check for powder, before putting the pill in, guess what I saw? A double charge in one case.
Just goes to show the value of good procedures, checks and balances.
Before putting powder in, all my cases are "Primer up" in the loading block.

Outstanding tip on using the shell holder with the bullet puller, thanks for sharing that. Also, it takes a big man to admit his mistakes, and an overcharge can happen easy when you get distracted. Depending on how warm your working load is, those extra 4 grains could have been exciting. Glad to see it was just blowing primers. Cuidado!

When I was younger and had just started reloading I went to the range and was amazed at how loud the rounds were. An older gentleman came over and asked what I was shooting. I showed him he grabbed a round shook shook it by his ear and told me to stop shooting because they had too much powder in there. Sure enough he was right when I got home I use my bullet puller and they were way over spec. That's when I bought a digital powder scale, no more beam and weights.
The moral of this story is to listen to those who know.

Ahh, easy easy mistake Eric. I did a similar thing a couple weeks back but, I caught it before I fired them. The real mistake you made wasn't in setting the incorrect charge into the thrower, that shit happens, it was not recording from the thrower the charge administered & verifying. We all have brain farts but, I always record the actual powder thrower charges, off of the actual device otherwise, the original mistake is perpetuated in the mind &, usually won't be caught.
Good idea with the case holder. I use the Hornady collet bullet puller. If it's set up correctly, it doesn't seem to mark the bullets at all. I've tried my connetic puller with the plastic tipped bullets &, those bullets don't like it at all.

Hello , pardner , I'VE heard all the time you should NOT shoot a 5.56 into a .223 bolt gun because the 5.56 has 10,000 more psi than the .223 ! Me like a dummy tried to (chamber form) shooting a 5.56 into a .223 , then I noticed , the casing of the 5.56 is way thicker than the .223 , if I tried it would take 4 firings , of same case since the .223 is a 2790 fps.load AND the 5.56 3100 fps in a black rifle, the explosion of the 5.5.56 in a bolt just won't do, there's no way I need 3100 fps in my bolt light rifle , besides 3100 fps will kinda wear out the filling, therefore all my rifles never exceed 2610 fps . They are my babies ! What you think?

Love the honesty. It's good to know that even pro's make mistakes occasionally.
When loading I leave all devices upstairs BUT that doesn't mean distractions still don't happen. (dogs need to be let out/in etc) The device part is about to change though. Just got my V3 autotrickler. (this is going to be such a godsend compared to how I was doing my powder charges) Could run it from the scale buttons but it's so much easier from the phone when bumping charges. ;-)
    Good luck with the match!

Erik, I have been reloading for 45 years. I have made some mistakes as well. Luckily I was never hurt. Fortunately, you weren't hurt either. I have always learned from my mistakes,. Sometimes we can learn more from the bad things, than we learn from the good things. Thank-you for sharing your story. It took a good, honest man to admit what happened. To me, this makes your videos even more credible than ever. I will start triple checking my powders charges from now on. Maybe you didn't get the necessary development and testing done, but you are still in one piece. That's what matters.

Thanks for the shell holder kinetic disassembler technique. I'm going to try it out on some dummy loads when I get home. My little rubber bands are becoming brittle and dying. (EDIT: It did indeed work. The .223 dummy I pulled apart had so much neck tension I nearly ripped the rim off - probably partly corroded from lying around in the wrong place - but it came out eventually.)
The rifles I own are off-the-shelf (one is milsurp .303 British!) and not capable of anywhere near the precision and accuracy you demand from your guns, but some of what I'm seeing here is still quite an eye-opener and I see it being very relevant to my .223 Rem shooting. Subscribed.

For rifle cartridges, I still use a balance scale for every round. Hand scoop 90% of target powder weight, finish with a powder trickler (or hand scoop). Visually verify all rounds by looking down the neck. A big batch is 50 rounds for me.

No poopy dude! In 25 years of reloading ive done it two times. The first was with my buddy’s 10 mm auto. Through my “ear muffs” i could tell that something wasn’t right. We found the case and it was a half blown primer.. had to pull 19 of em. I made a decision to always load alone.
The second time was with my 30’06. Alone, I plugged in my itouch, cranked the volume and was in a groove. Rockin out. I shot one round the next day and same thing. The gun didnt feel or sound right. Half blown primer.
i now load alone in silence. I was anal now im tripple redundant anal.
Awesome tip on the shell holder for pulling! The normal collet will let powder out but the shell holder might just keep it all in. No mess!

Hey Erik quick question. My dad always weighed out the powder he was going to use based on how many rounds he was loading and made a habit of not pouring powder back into the jug. Avoiding moisture exposure I believe he said, been doing this for twenty years myself and am wondering if there is anything to this. And in this case that you're pulling bullets do you reuse the powder?

The bullet puller thing is genius. I broke my hammer style puller so I switched to the RCBS press puller with collets. Works really well. No banging haha.

I'm going to have to try the clr cleaner, never thought about that even though I use it for engine cooling systems. You're exactly right about focusing on what you're doing, I put my phone in the fridge turn the radio on then start setting cams, valves, injectors, pump timing etc. Making someone mad for not answering the phone is cheaper than blowing up a high dollar engine!

I learned not to trust myself as well. Now, after reloading, I carefully load a round double checking everything, I then weigh my final cartridges and compare them to the "check round" to check for errors. Occasionally I find I need to pull and reload. This final check has saved me a lot of head aches.

That’s a little scary. I’ve done it being in a rush. Had to pull a dozen bullets after I realized I was throwing the wrong charge. It happens.

Fast burning powder for this bullet/caliber (much room) ? You can try to choose a powder that gives a better filling ratio to avoid this. I cant add so much powder to my loads but I had another issue with distraction : no powder at all which may be dangerous if your bullet get stuck into the barrel. Now i double check all my cases with a light just before seating the bullets

Great video showing not all goes as planned always. Glad that it was no worse than it was. But the trick with the puller, I’m going to do this. I hate that little rubber band contraption. 👍👍

At least we now know where all the Federal large rifle 210M primers went. 3,000 of them. :/

Thanks for the CLR and Shell holder info. Question: Do your tuners have nylon tipped set screws to protect the threads?

What size shell case did you say you put in the RCBS Chargemaster? Did you thread the case?

Erik have you ever tried one of these www.forsterproducts.com/product/bullet-pullers/ from Forster, I've had good luck with them pulling bullets when necessary. I also use the hammer method but had not seen the shell holder tricker before, thanks for sharing!

Glad I’m not the only one who screwed up a charge! Did the same thing only four grains over, and it melted the ejector ( had to shoot two rounds to convince myself)!

I do a ton or reloading and shooting. I like that you are realistic. Things aren't always rainbows and gumdrop smiles when it comes to finding loads and working on rifles. I am glad you show even the bad experiences. Those are what you learn from. Good video.
