Due to different houses and the speed they are built (when supplies are in stock) there is going to be a lot of waste. I do not consider what you are cutting off to be that much. Beside the pieces can be used for something later. Like forming steps or sides for a walk to be poured with concrete. And speaking of the nails today...well I am surprised you did not have more to bend as they were drove in. The strength of nails are not what they use to be. So we have to use more.
