    Painting Diecast Cars - Dukes Of Hazzard - ETRL Sheriff Patrol Car Restoration. In today's resurrection we did a Restoration on an ERTL Bonneville Patrol car from the Dukes of Hazzard set released in the mid 90's. I wanted to do more experimenting with Gold Leafing so we did the badges on the doors with gold first!

    Yeah, they never used Pontiacs in the Dukes, BUT they did use them in Smokey and the Bandit. It's what Sheriff Justice drove. ETRL may have done the Sheriff's brown Bonneville, then used the casting for the Duke's set since it had a light bar.

    I got a few of those sets when I was a kid. I loved the Dukes of Hazzard. I was always upset because the police cars were different than the ones that were actually in the show.

    • @JohnSmith-lw2bm

    • @jeremyedgell9989
      @jeremyedgell9989 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, Ertl I guess was to tight to cast the the actual car. Instead they actually used the cast of sheriff Buffed T justice car from Smokey and the bandit.

    First off I would like to say I really enjoy watching your videos. You do really good work. Secondly, you were correct in saying you never saw a Pontiac Bonneville police cruiser on Dukes of Hazzard. The cars used were Dodge Coronet or Plymouth Fury. The Pontiac Bonneville was used in Smokey and the Bandit. It was a gold or brown colored police cruiser driven by Sheriff Buford T. Pusser. Pontiac gave the cars for production. Not picking anything apart, just trying to educate. Thanks again and keep the videos coming. 😁

  • @nathancook1404
    @nathancook1404 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think the Reason Ertl went with the Pontiac was probably they wanted to avoid Copyright with Chrysler which owns Dodge or they figured that it was cheaper to reuse the same casting from another set, the Pontiac Bonneville Casting they used was used for Buford T. Justice's Car from their Ertl Smokey & the Bandit 2 set.

    2:38 Ertl also sold these in a 4-pack window box that included either Daisy’s jeep or Cooter’s pickup, but it seems like the selection was practically random, as each one seems to have different cars (like THREE patrol cars plus Boss Hogg’s Caddy 😅). There’s a VHTF playset too that has all five vehicles with a playmat & cardboard buildings. Cool stuff 😁

    looks great again. especially with the detailing. :) the gold leafing looks fantastic, the wheels, too. they seem to have become MBs new Superfast wheels... a lot of models have these on.
    as for the testors paint, Carson Modelsport has a paint remover specifically made for polystyrene and lexane. I tried it on an old Siku plastic model from the early 60's that has been slathered with modelers paint with like, 666 layers of paint. the paint remover is a bit like a thinner, it softens the paint so you can scrape it off with a plastic scapula, and the plastic doesn't become brittle from it. it does get a rough surface, however. I did this years ago, and recently checked on the parts, and they still hold up; no brittle, no breaking, no warping.

    As a youngster, I made sure to watch every episode. I've still got my vintage played-with set along with 2 new General Lees still on the Ertl card I bought in 1988. Pretty sure these sets came out in the early eighties judging by how much action mine saw. I didn't play with them much after jr high school. Love how you removed the chrome and then sprayed it with something that looks so much like chrome. What product did you use for that??? Super nice paint work and the gold leaf really does make the model a show piece.

    To the best of my recollection, Pontiacs were never used in the Dukes of Hazzard. I believe the Sherriff's cars were Dodges. It was probably a recycled Smokey and the Bandit Sherriff's car that was reused for the set. Kids wouldn't notice. Nice restoration job. As always, thanks.

  • @Tiger351
    @Tiger351 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That came out awesome considering what you started with. I don't remember there being Pontiac Bonneville cop cars in the show but there were a few changes made in the final season(s) (Daisy driving a 73 Road Runner instead of the CJ7 for instance), I can't remember what the cop cars in the reunion special were but I think only Rosco had a Dodge Monaco in that from memory. Most likely ERTL just had a buch of castings left over from the Smokey and the Bandit 2 sets and just used those, it was pretty common for them to do stuff like that back then.

    Try burnishing the leafing with a damp lint-free cloth. Helps it adhere to the sizing. You might even try taking the mask off after applying the sizing but before laying down the leafing. It can be almost completely dry and the leaf will still stick.
