Obviously there are smaller and fringe acts who have more difficult material, but when you consider the length and frequency of their concerts, having to live up to a legend, and to do so with the scrutiny of the largest of audiences? Yeah, that's pretty damn challenging.
Great point!
He survived the interview and tryout process.
He's a decent bass player. Cliff was probably better but honestly all three Metallica bass players are mediocre/average compared to the really good players in the game right now. The real challenge, and what makes him good is being able to play and remember all those songs, play for hours on a giant stage while keeping the energy up, and doing it all at his age. Add in all the press stuff and touring. Going hard on stage every night isn't easy. He's ok on bass, but he's a great performer
Excellently said!
I disagree , although he is one of the best bass players today. I thing any bass player from any band will say the same thing.
Ya, being a professional musician at any level is tough. Thanks for your comment!
I don't think he is talking about Metallica's Material. I think he is talking about the touring obligations. Metallica's touring is wild for their ages. They never seem to stop.
Sample Data:
1986: ~140 dates
1991-1992: ~225 dates over 2 years, so ~112.5 per year
2003-2004: ~150 dates over 2 years, so ~75 per year
2008-2010: ~180 dates over 3 years, so ~60 per year
2016-2019: ~150 dates over 3 years, so ~50 per year
They are slowing down but they tour everywhere. They've been to more locations on the world than any other band. We're not just talking about touring in the US. Their concerts are usually very significant and Rob was expected to learn and remember decades of material some of which was intended to be played by a thrash bassist in his 20s. Anastasia, Orion, The Call of Ktulu. Then we see his antics on stage. For his age he should slow it down.
I think you're probably right.
Rob is a better bassist than Metallica requires, but the physicality required to play their sets night after night in city after city around the globe as they age is truly impressive. This isn't a rock and roll band, this is a thrash metal band. Not the easiest genre to play at their age.
Honestly, playing with a drummer like Lars is very difficult because of his sloppy sense of time.
That's probably so true. I didn't factor that in to my thinking. 👍
LMFAO
Sorry, but he is no Cliff Burton or Jason Newsted. Don't care for him.
He doesn't seem to have much of a musical identity that I can spot. Competency is his main calling card I guess.
lolz he thinks hes special so entitled
