Just wanted to say thanks! I broke my ankle on both sides last winter and found a lot of your videos incredibly helpful while recovering, before I began in-person PT after Covid hit. I was looking for this video to share to a friend who recently sprained her ankle, and wanted to thank you both for providing a tremendous service to folks who can't get to a PT clinic!
I am 6 weeks post op total ankle replacement. I’m in a walking boot, and can weight bear, and walk around a good bit, but my calf muscle is completely gone. Rehab doesn’t start for two weeks, so I’m happy to find this and going to start working out today!
I'm 4.5 weeks post op total ankle. I should be out of the boot after 6 weeks. Had other ankle done 4 years ago. The therapy / exercises were key to recovery and normal activities. Starting exercises now. Hoping to minimize down time.
I broke my ankle almost three weeks ago and had surgery two weeks ago, and I can already see a size difference in my quads. Excited to try these exercises to keep my leg active!
@@chrisjohnson3956 Invite me to the club as well. Almost 3 months ago I dislocated my ankle and tore up my ligaments and broke my fibula as well. I'm thankful to the Lord Jesus for his strength he gave me these past 10 weeks to get through this. I have my boot on for another 9 days until I go back to my doctor to get the ok so I don't have to where the boot anymore. Then I will do a few months of therapy.
This is great! I was concerned about walking again with muscle loss, etc. Had a horse crush the ligaments and nerves in my foot (lisfranc injury) two months ago. Kept hobbling around until I couldn't anymore and saw a podiatrist a week ago. NO weight bearing. So, these exercises are going to come in handy! I'm also having my massage therapist help with all the other aches and pains that go along with this; legs, hips, neck, shoulders, back. Everything goes wonky when you're not moving or sleeping normally. Thank you! OH! And the other foot; tarsal tunnel which is affecting achilles tendon. Lol! What a YEAR! Wooohooo! I needed to take better care of myself anyways and now I'm motivated :)
That happened to me when I was 16. I was in the barn feeding without the right shoes on. A bee stung my Arab mare and she stomped, pivoted, and took off on my foot. No broken bones but considerable soft tissue damage. I’m 40, the skin still turns purple in that spot. I found this video because I just broke my lower leg on that same limb.
@@katievogel1009 oh no! 😯 Sorry to hear that. 🤗 That pivoting part made me cringe. I had sandals on, once, in the barn with my goats. Not the little breeds. Snow was around 300 lbs. It was black and blue for weeks. She had very hard hooves. I had to use horse nips to trim her hooves. I’m finally off of my crutches after over a year and a half. It’s been a few months putting weight on my foot again. I have scar tissue to manually break up between the mid metatarsal bones to get range of motion back so the torn tendons on the outside of my ankle can keep healing. But I’m grateful to be on two feet! I hope your new injury is healing well. 🙏🏻 It’s hard. 🤗
Thank you so much!! I broke my ankle back in sept & had 3 surgeries over 6 months. I’m needing to come back from very severe atrophy & weakness. Your video is a lifesaver. Wasn’t sure what I would do. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Thanks B n B, this is actually perfect for people with hemiparesis due to stroke. People who can activate at least a tiny bit of the affected leg, can do mini versions of these exercises, to try to maintain or gain back some strength, and to prevent atrophy. Thanks guys!!
Thank you Bob and Brad!!! I depend on you two for so many helpful exercises to do for injury and all kinds of helpful health related problems!!! You two are so great to be sharing this great information to us all!!!! ❤️
Love all the video clips I've found that you put together. Thank you. I am so disappointed my doctor never suggested I do any exercise. I made arrangements for a physical therapist to come to my home to help me access what I may need to safely get around. I found a recliner that raises me to a stand helps, a raised toilet seat with handles to raise myself up. It is snowy and icy here and a knee scooter ( that is what I use) or crutches are out for sure outside! So leaving the house I found a wheelchair and had to arrange for a portable ramp to rent. I would love for you to offer suggestions on how to get up off the floor if you fall, how to get off a soft surface like a chair, Options to "climb" stairs ( crawl, boot scoot backwards??...) Thank you for all the great videos, the doctors don't offer any of the important information you offer. Keep up the good work!
I also arranged for home PT. Helped a lot with 2 broken ankles. Did a lot of the exercises you guys did. Showed me how to get to potty in wheel chair. Raised toilet was much needed. I used the wheelchair and walker for 6 weeks. I think I’m ready for out patient PT now for my right ankle which had surgery.
Thanks Bob and Brad! I’m 3 weeks post-op for broken big toe and sprain. Started weight bearing 5 days ago and began these exercises 6 days ago. I have improved rapidly this week by using these exercises! 🎉
I have a fractured and sprained ankle and am in an Aircast Boot. My hip has been bothering me a lot, and I am glad I found your exercises. COVID restrictions prevent me from attending a physio clinic. Thanks!
Sharing your info is paramount. Been literally crawling on my knees since Friday, 1210/21. Went to ER 12/11/21, EMS carried me down 3 flights of stairs. Hv Calcific Achilles Tendonitis.... 😖 Painful!!!!. Had a boot from a sprain in Feb. Just finding out I can use it. Sorry, not many care about the patient per day...just the money...God help!!!!
I wish they did that too, I Fractured my foot a few months ago and the advice they gave me was to just Rest, Sadly Atrophy Happened Big Time, Had to Rebuild that Muscle Once i was able to walk Pain Free Again

Broke my ankle 30 days ago due to falling off two steps. I'm 62. Right fibula, distal malleolus. Initially was twisted, but by the time I got my first appointment to the Orthopedic Surgeon, it had settled into place. So I didn't need surgery. Gave me the option of cast or boot. I chose boot because of my old fragile dry skin. I needed to keep it in tact. Docs instructions were, "walk as tolerated". Man of few words. I was in so much pain that I didn't walk at all. My next visit was yesterday. He was mad at me for not walking. He ordered PT and I start Monday. My leg has already begun to atrophy. I wish I had come across your information sooner. I did walk with the boot yesterday, twice for about 15 minutes each. Quite painful.
How did u know u was Abel to walk I lost fat n muscle my right leg is slimy and I’m scared to step after the dr just told me to do excerises I’m scared cast just came off

You guys are awesome, I absolutely can’t afford medical care and have no insurance but I got super lucky that my local hospital gave me a walking boot for free and found that I just have a very severe sprain and no fracture. I’ve been doing at home pt with it with partial weight bearing on crutches and now I’m getting a flex band to do these exercises!
I'm 5 weeks in after that exact same injury. How long did it take before you were walking unaided again? It looks like it's going to take considerably longer than I first thought
@@karenpaul4940 so unaided walking took me about 4 months and even then I couldn’t do far or long … by 5 months I was able to walk much better but still had a limp around 6 months limp went away . Really appreciate these tips. I had a bunion removal surgery and the healing process has been a little longer than expected. Thank you! God bless you ❤
I've been in a cam walker boot for 2 months short of a year due to a fracture in the medial cuneiform. I tried physical therapy in April and ended up acquiring a second fracture in the intermediate cuneiform from overdoing my activities and was placed back in the boot. Bought a knee scooter and been using it since August 1st. Went for an updated MRI August 13th and it showed some soft tissue and tendon inflammation but thankfully both fractures healed up. I'm still dealing with pain that I mistake for the fractured areas possibly being reinjured but it's just that instilled fear. Working with the physical therapist again to get some motion and strengthening going on in that foot before returning to weight bearing and we're taking that 20% standing on a scale in the boot with support of a walker this week then next week 50% and hopefully two weeks from now I can return to walking in the boot and continuing the strengthening and range of motion exercises. I remember watching videos on plantar fasciitis when I first started having pain and decided to see a podiatrist. Glad to continue the journey in recovery home with you guys. (Updated 9-8-2021)
I broke both legs in a car accident as well two compound fracture and a shattered ankle I wish there was a support group because it’s not easy even when everyone tells you it will be okay

The hospital physio sent me hone with a zimmer frame at the wrong height) and a leaflet with a couple of exercise to avoid embolism but not a peep about muscular atrophy or the need to keep my non-weight bearing leg active! Thank you fellas! 🙏🏾🌻 I fell on ice and broke my ankle pretty bad. After surgery, two weeks in a cast. The orthopaedic tech who fitted my boot casually asked me if I’d started rehab on the injured leg. Nuff said. It’s important to exercise the injured leg. I’ve noticed atrophy already

I'm senior person, unidiagnosed (til now) multiple fractures 3 years ago in middle metatarsal, adding complications to severe arthritis in big toe joint, many flare-ups over time. Water exercise saved me, til swimming pools closed. Would doing exercises with ankle weights, rather than strap, work? I have both but find weights more convenient. Thank you for this and your most expert and generous-spirited videos.
Hey. Home you are back on your feet and strong again by now! I know what you mean. I have one broken ankle and one badly sprained ankle so can't walk now going on 5 weeks. The first 4 weren't so bad but it's super frustrating in this fifth week and have 3 more to go before cast removal and boot applied. We do what we have to do don't we?!
Welcome to my current world. A fractured ankle is painful. I try to stay positive but crying also helps. I've never been so emotional in my life. I pray we all recover well.❤
Thank you very much! Ive broken my talus 3 weeks earlier. I know it heals slow. Cant believe how my calves vanished that quick. All i have is skin and bone.
I just broke my talus at the weekend. Waiting on surgery so still cast and going into 4-6 weeks of cast and NWB. It's tough, but it's good to have something to do that helps improve recovery even though you can't see the progress until the cast is off!
I broke my ankle on the same leg that I had a hip replacement about 5 years ago. It's been 9 days since they put the boot on my ankle. I feel my bursitis coming back. I am so happy this channel is here to help me. Thanks
I had tendon reconstruction surgery on my left foot on July 30th. I have always been an exercise nut so this reminder to keep the range of motion going during the healing period is great information. I ruptured the Posterior Tibial Tendon so it was pretty painful to walk, which I unfortunately did for months before seeking medical help. Using an IWalk 3.0 and regular crutches to get around. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Thank you so much. I am at the last healing stage for my foot and ankle fracture. I just saw my orthopedist today and he said that I am healing nicely to the point where I can start exercises and slowly walking
Recently Ruptured my Achilles Tendon. 1 week post op. Have begun populating my TH-cam with helpful hints on tub transfers, etc...BUT this video is GOLDEN! Needed this. They sound like radio sports announcers so I LOVE them! Thank you so MUCH!!!!!
After ankle surgery, I wore a soft splint 2 weeks, then a cast 4 weeks, all non wt bearing. Now I am in a walking boot 4 weeks, full wt bearing and began PT. Pt has me doing these exercizes 3 sets of 10 reps, (no resistance yet, and have about 1 more week til boot off). I am now easily walking in the boot without assistance, but it pulls on my low back and causes aching, so I don't overdo it, still have to rest. A "Level Up" on my good foot shoe is very, very helpful, otherwise I had hip pain in my good leg's hip. The Level Up is adjustable. All I can say is don't break your ankle if you can help it! What a long, drawn out recovery! Ankle surgeries increase after bad winter storms I was told. I bought some snow and ice cleats for my shoes for when I recover!!! (This is my progression and PT plan, not meant to say what others should do.)♥️
I had broken metatarsal on left ankle and broken tibia/fibula on right, with surgery including plates and pins. Two boots can put weight on left with boot. No weight on right for 2-3 months. Just got out of left boot to shoe at 5 weeks. Started home PT at 4 weeks. After X-rays on right in a week, hoping to start out patient PT for right ankle. I am a believer in PT. Has helped greatly. Start doing exercises asap. Leg lifts are first! Wheelchair and walker are your friend.
I found your videos after I broke my ankle in Jerusalem, Israel (where I live) and they are very helpful! Thanks to you I was able to climb a flight of stairs the day after my injury. I just got an air cast and I am looking for advice on how to start putting weight on my leg again. I won't be able to start physical therapy for a week. Do you have videos that address this? I am writing the alphabet with my foot and using resistance bands. Your videos are great -- you're the most famous physical therapists on the Internet, in MY opinion, too!
Me. No choice - right foot wrecking left hip now. So, after doing both thumbs and left shoulder, this is where I am at. Right shoulder, knees? Perhaps my time is done ….. God keeps me trying, and I’m grateful fo4 that. 🙏🏻
Not gonna lie. Been experiencing a lot of pain 6 weeks out from my broken ankle, but this video helped the pain a lot more than I expected, and it makes me feel like I have a little more control with my recovery. Thank you Bob and Brad.
I had my left heel broken and reset, 2 tendons replaced, my calf lengthened and a bunion shaved in May - 4 weeks after a right hip surgery. Hip never had time to heal before it had to take all my body weight. Was NWB for 8 weeks. In boot for 5 more weeks. Was doing PT for left foot/ankle and right hip. Had to have another surgery 2 days ago on my left foot again. My whole bottom body is weak now and I'm lost. You need 1 good side to recover either side. These are great exercises. Thank you!
Even with my injury being just belowthe knee, and wearing a whole knee brace, i was easily able to do all these exercises, except the hamstring one :( I have a PRETTY good functional knowledge of human anatomy/physiology, i was actually thinking about these movements and considered weeks ago on beginning them for the purposes you both spoke on, but i wanted to hear/learn from a professional that it would be beneficial and/or necessary...
Thanks guys for the video. It’s great to see people who can talk and demonstrate at the same time. Some of the other videos have too much chatter. Most of the videos are almost over before they get to the demonstration. Thanks again guys, your the best.
Super helpful, I had ankle and foot surgery and I am no weight bearing for 4 weeks, then weight bearing as tolerated after. My other body parts hurt because I am not moving. Been elevate, elevate, elevate phase for 3 weeks now. This is really gong to help and keep my mind off all the other things that I need to do, but can't.
I had the same surgery. I am doing some of these exercises at 5 weeks, no weight on foot, and without the bands. They should let you know, with X-rays, when bones are healed enough, to start other exercises.
I have low back pain (bulging discs) and a baby coming to our home in December. I’d love a video helping moms with back pain holding and caring for babies!!
Great work guys, I’ve been non weight bearing for 6 weeks after my 2nd Lisfranc surgery with a hip graft. I’ve still got 2 more weeks as Doc wants 8wks nwb. I noticed my calf is half my size now and my quad is starting to show diminished muscle. These exercises are just what I need to get some muscle flex, movement and stop the loss. Thanks

Tibia fracture... Show some exercise for that
Thanks B n B, this is actually perfect for people with hemiparesis due to stroke.
I would love for you to offer suggestions on how to get up off the floor if you fall, how to get off a soft surface like a chair, Options to "climb" stairs ( crawl, boot scoot backwards??...)
Thank you for all the great videos, the doctors don't offer any of the important information you offer.
Thanks! Just got a boot yesterday, and I want to maintain muscle tone for sure!!!
Thanks lads - found these exercises helpful and presented in a humorous and enjoyable way.

I have never heard of a doctor wanting you to walk on a broken ankle! Had it already been at least four weeks?

Very helpful video! Just to clarify, you say 10-15 reps of each movement. How many sets of these reps should be done? Thank you.
Same question

So appreciate this! Had surgery today and am worried about atrophy. Going to start this ASAP!
Thanks guys this will help I’m sure, I have some extra faith in you seeing that PACKERS mug in the back ground. Take care ✌️
Thank you so much for these exercises, much appreciated!!!🥰
Just broke my ankle 2 weeks ago, got 4 more weeks to go. Im gonna start doing this for sure.
Going crazy from being inside for 6 weeks. 👀
How was your recovery after 6 weeks? Are you able to walk without any pain?
@@AkuaDJ dont expect no pain after 6 weeks. It takes a lot of time to heal an ankle.
@@AkuaDJ after exactly 1 year I still experience swelling and my ankle is 90% healed.
You guys are the best! Thanks for your videos!
Those are all great exercises, but how about mentioning using a leveling up the other foot while wearing the therapy boot so you don't put throw hip and back out of place with uneven shoes.
I just bought one! A friend told me about it plus I wear Fitflops and they are amazing and keep me level!
After 8 weeks in a boot cast on my right foot, I had recently discovered such a thing as shoe lifters online. I sure wish I had known about those weeks ago!! I would have saved myself a lot of grief on my lower back, left hip, left knee and left foot from bearing the weight and being out of alignment. Now it’s too late as I’ve been instructed by the Dr to start weaning out of the boot cast. My lower back was and is always sore! 😩
I feel like my ligament damage doesn’t really compare to everyone else here in the comments. I mean the doctors at the Er said I was lucky to not have broken it due to the fact I landed on the front and side of my foot after jumping playing sport. But just said it was a very bad sprain after I had the X-ray. I got bad bruising and swelling and a lot of pain but not excatly as bad as a lot of people here. Anyways. I genuinly hope everyone gets better soon and I mm so sorry to hear about all of your injuries. Some sound absolutely horrific. Anywyas. Get well soon y’all. 😊😊😊
