I just looked back at the reference photo. This tutorial is proof that knowing what to leave out is as important as knowing what to put in. Peter you never cease to amaze me.
Not just a helpful tutorial, but very therapeutic to watch as well. I appreciate that you label the colors with text boxes -- the way you've labeled them is very helpful.
For sure, this is my favorite technique, too. This video is what I would like to be able to paint sooo much. Looking at my own, poor, attempts., love to watch you sketching and - big sigh - knowing, I'll never get there. But playing with pen and brush is still so much fun Thanks for sharing your talent 🙏
At first, I was suspiciously watching your lines glide on the paper. Later, I found myself all of those lines were meant to be. Thank you for your sharing. :)
I am always fascinated by your line technique, Peter, and where you begin your sketch. As someone who continues to fight with perspective, it appears to me as though you use your pauses and smaller roof lines to keep perspective sorted, which is a cool way to monitor it.
For me the hardest part with any drawing/painting from real life or reference photo's is knowing what to leave out. Thanks for these demo's they are very useful - and brill! :)
Thank you for the tutorials, Peter! That's just what I've been looking for. I've just started learning and it's quite difficult for me to draw and paint something of my own. But your tutorials made me believe in myself and that I'm capable of drawing beautifully. Thank you very much for what you do!
You have a great eye for architectural compositions Peter. Great tonal contrast and good it use of palette colours hinting at old deteriorated buildings.
I just discovered your videos. I've been wanting to do Urban sketching for a travel journal for years! I've taken some Crafty classes, and watched other TH-cam videos but couldn't get the hang of it. Their camera angle isn't always right, the instructors have a hard time explaining and painting simultaneously (which I know it would be challenging to have to do both) it's edited so you don't see the entire process. The screen is crowded so you can't really see things. Your set up is PERFECT! Thanks for showing the reference photo in the beginning so we can screen shot it. I use my phone to see it. I then watch and sketch/paint along side you on my iPad, I like you do not talk (it's not distracting), you tell us which colors you are using, you do it all in real time so we can do the project together!! So please do not change! I did two videos with you and then had the confidence to start on my own and did it!!! I posted them on my Instagram and tagged you yesterday. :).
I love watching these kinds of videos - its so easy to get caught in the details that simplicity really does look just as good if not better than an actual picture! Thank you! :)
Interesting that you have made the focal point in the distance 'dark'. It works well. I do love pen and wash so much and enjoyed this a lot. Thanks for sharing Peter.
Somewhere in my past I was told in city-scapes buildings normally appear darker as one goes further away from the front of the sketch. This is used as a technique to enhance perspective. It sure appears to have worked here. I really enjoy watching, and learning, from your videos. Thank you.
Thanks Peter, an excellent tutorial, I've been watching all of the videos you posted, most of the time I watch them at my lunch break on my phone and didn't know how to comment until I found the way, anyways just to let you know that even when I don't comment, I do watch them, they all are excellent, I've tried a few of them and they look very nice, thanks for taking the time to show the whole process it really helps. You are a great artist.
Your work is so inspiring. This looks easy but to paint like that You have to spent some time. Anyway when I'm watching your videos it makes me wanna paint.
I am very happy to discover your page. Pen and wash sites are hard to find. Thank you, especially that you put the name of the paint when you put your brush in it.
Been addicted to your videos and art. I printed the photo and watch video while looking and comparing the photo while you paint. It helps me a lot see how you interpret things. Have you considered posting the subjects next to the paper? Thank you for keeping us sane.
Love your work and this one does not disappoint. Will be visiting Italy again next month. Not sure if Florence is on the list, but I hope so. Haven't been there yet.
Thanks Peter :-) I love your style. Have taken a screenshot of your reference photo and your finished work ( hope you don't mind, it's only for myself learning) and will sit down and practice over and over again. I learn so much from your videos! Greetings from Genova, Italy. Lise
Thank you, again, for sharing the reference photo. I think many as they draw and illustrate draw from reference and from our imagination.. When folks put me on the spot to draw something without a certain subject. You know the type. "Oh, I'd love anything you do..." I draw from a rusty imagination. Usually found from something real that has impressed or I have repeated. It's nice to watch someone else do the heavy lifting, (Paint and draw.) The music helps. Husband of profile lady.
Hi - Really nice demonstration. Thank you. Can you tell me something? At 14:21 or so, when you add the darker colour over the wet yellow ochre ... why doesn't the dark colour bleed into the lighter yellow ochre on its left? That's what happens if I try it!
Peter - a thousand thanks for this wonderful, inspiring video. You make pen and wash look so easy, but truly you have the hand and eye of a master! Great to see how you set out the pespectives before going back to fill in the details. Just wondering.... what size paper were you using?
Hi Peter, u have always inspired me with ur city sketches with ink and wash...your drawings have always been beautiful.. I am just curious to know whether u pre wet ur sketch right before u apply the first layer of watercolor? Thanks in advance..
I'm very grateful for your videos - I find your style very appealing and I watch them over and over again as my goal is to lighten up my own line work when sketching (Carnegie Hall, practice, practice, practice.....). I do have one favour to ask - is it at all possible, when you use reference photos, for the reference to stay on the screen as you sketch? I'm particularly interested in what you include, what you leave out, etc.
I guess I was thinking even more simplistic than that - just placing the photograph beside your paper - as you do with watercolour palette when you get to that step, regardless, I look forward to new videos and I'll keep watching the old ones (although at times I just need to turn away from the computer and practice, practice, practice...sigh)
If you take a screenshot at the beginning where Peter shows the finished painting, you can either print it off or have it as a window alongside the video window, I usually do this, it helps a lot.
Thank you for your demos, they are so informative. Why do you prefer pouring colours on the bits of paper than into pans, is it so you can arrange them accordingly to your choice of color s?
Thank you. The paints are squeezed onto slips of paper and then stuck to the palette with two sided tape. This makes replacing or changing colours quick and easy. This practice has damaged my palette so I have discontinued using it.
Hello Peter - I have come to line and wash recently - have to say i really love your videos and doing them over and over makes a good way to practice. I like they present a simple focussed idea. Peter I wonder if you could recommend 2-3 books that will help me in making line and wash paintings. Thank you, sir.
Love your work! But how do you keep your paints in nice little piles in the corners? My paints quickly get spread out and all over the palette. Keep the muse going!
I really enjoy your channel, Peter. One suggestion/comment: is it possible to keep the reference photo within view as you sketch? It would be a great way to visually follow along.
Thanks Joanne. I am currently unable to overlay an image of the reference photo as I don't have the proper software. As well, I haven't room on my current set up to simply display a photo on the work surface. I do hope to remedy this in the future.
I am a 90year old fan and still really enjoying my painting. My favourite medium is pen and wash and you are an inspiration to me. Jean.
I just looked back at the reference photo. This tutorial is proof that knowing what to leave out is as important as knowing what to put in. Peter you never cease to amaze me.
Very true Patrick :)
Please do not ever stop making your art or your videos. They are a tremendous high spot in my life right now 💜💚💜💚💜
I hope I don't as well :) Thanks
It"s really great ! I love them too!!! Greeting from Japan!
Great I love this really well done🙋
Carole Young my favorite way of learning is by watching you at work! Thank you🤗🤗😘
I never get tired of watching these.
I really like that you are so generous as to tell the details of your materials and methods. So helpful!😊
thank you Peter, I enjoyed watching this painting. I will certainly check out your other demo paintings. So relaxing to watch.
Thank you. It is good to see the reference photo for learners like me. I have learned so much from you.
Great to hear Helen. Peter

Thanks Cathy. Appreciated for sure. Peter
A great example! Thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Hope to be this good one day.
I am amazed at the beauty you have produced using the most simple approach. Truly outstanding.
Thank you Joe . So glad you enjoyed this. Peter :)
Not just a helpful tutorial, but very therapeutic to watch as well. I appreciate that you label the colors with text boxes -- the way you've labeled them is very helpful.
Thanks so much. So glad you enjoyed it and find them helpful. Peter :-)
sono felice che ci sia nuovamente un paesaggio italiano un bello spunto per dipingere la mia terra grazie mille
Grazie mille. Tanto ispirazione nel vostro bel paese. Peter
For sure, this is my favorite technique, too.
This video is what I would like to be able to paint sooo much.
Looking at my own, poor, attempts., love to watch you sketching and - big sigh - knowing, I'll never get there. But playing with pen and brush is still so much fun
Thanks for sharing your talent 🙏
Thank you Sir! I'm an architecture student, and your tutorials have been helping my grades a lot lately! Sincere thanks from India!
That is great to hear. Hope you do well. Peter
At first, I was suspiciously watching your lines glide on the paper.
Later, I found myself all of those lines were meant to be.
Thank you for your sharing. :)
Your videos are so helpful to me (a beginner), especially with regard to perspective. And I love the combo of micron pen with watercolor. Thank you.
Thank you Judy. So glad they're helping you. Peter
I am always fascinated by your line technique, Peter, and where you begin your sketch. As someone who continues to fight with perspective, it appears to me as though you use your pauses and smaller roof lines to keep perspective sorted, which is a cool way to monitor it.
Thanks Deborah. Good observation. Peter
Peter, you are a genius. Looking forward to your live demos...
Love the sketching technique. 👍🏾😎
For me the hardest part with any drawing/painting from real life or reference photo's is knowing what to leave out. Thanks for these demo's they are very useful - and brill! :)
That is one of the hardest thing to learn Doras. Peter
Thanks Peter - yes please whatever you do don't stop!
As long as the ideas are there ;)
Thank you for the tutorials, Peter! That's just what I've been looking for. I've just started learning and it's quite difficult for me to draw and paint something of my own. But your tutorials made me believe in myself and that I'm capable of drawing beautifully. Thank you very much for what you do!
Perfect tutorial. Thank you once again

Great comments and observations Andrew. Thanks :)

Simply beautiful. You have already taught me so much about drawing and loose watercolor. I cannot thank you enough.
Very nice to hear. Makes my posting all worthwhile. Peter
Great video! I love your line work. It has so much energy. I appreciate your use of watercolor as well. Very inspiring!
Thank you very much Mike
Thank you Peter....again ..very nice work!
You're very welcome Rene Thank you :)
I love how you keep things simple. I find that really hard to do. Great job
Thanks Kev. You'll develop it. Peter
I love watching these kinds of videos - its so easy to get caught in the details that simplicity really does look just as good if not better than an actual picture! Thank you! :)
Great comments and observation Sarah. Thanks :)
I took a tremendous amount from this demo Peter. Thanks!
That is really nice to hear William
thank you again Peter. wonderful demo.
Peter, your work is inspiring. I wish you’d posted your reference image so I could have followed your eye along. I love your line work.

Beautiful!!

Thank you very much Janet. Always nice to hear I've inspired :)
I LOVE your videos! They have helped me so much with my own paintings. Thank you!
Thank you very much Lisa. Peter
Interesting that you have made the focal point in the distance 'dark'. It works well. I do love pen and wash so much and enjoyed this a lot. Thanks for sharing Peter.
Thanks Chammi. Can't tell you why I made it dark. These things just happen as I paint.
Somewhere in my past I was told in city-scapes buildings normally appear darker as one goes further away from the front of the sketch. This is used as a technique to enhance perspective. It sure appears to have worked here. I really enjoy watching, and learning, from your videos. Thank you.
My favorite part is where you put the focal point in shadow there in the back. It really defines the light and shadows. Always enjoy it Peter.
Thanks Adam. Glad to hear you liked it.
Thank you Peter. Maravilloso.
You're welcome Pablo :)

Thank you Pedro. Nice to hear :)
peter you draw and colour very nicely
Very kind words. Thank you very much. Peter :)
Been addicted to your videos and art. I printed the photo and watch video while looking and comparing the photo while you paint. It helps me a lot see how you interpret things. Have you considered posting the subjects next to the paper? Thank you for keeping us sane.
Hi Ricardo. Can't do that with the system I use
Love your work and this one does not disappoint. Will be visiting Italy again next month. Not sure if Florence is on the list, but I hope so. Haven't been there yet.
Thank you very much. Enjoy your trip :)
more of these please! Basic pen and wash! Thanks :)
Alright, alright :)
I don't suppose you know what the music is at the beginning of this video..? It's gorgeous! As is the painting, of course!! :)
Another lesson for me. Thank you.
Ok, gracias, estoy pendiente de tus dibujos, son espléndidos.
De nada. Gracias por ver :)
So good man so good
Thank you very much John. Peter

Очень красиво ❤

Thanks! Your paint is still too wet. You'll learn to recognize this with time and practice.
Lindo. Parabens
Peter - a thousand thanks for this wonderful, inspiring video. You make pen and wash look so easy, but truly you have the hand and eye of a master! Great to see how you set out the pespectives before going back to fill in the details. Just wondering.... what size paper were you using?

Thanks! Love the Microns
Hi Peter, u have always inspired me with ur city sketches with ink and wash...your drawings have always been beautiful..
I am just curious to know whether u pre wet ur sketch right before u apply the first layer of watercolor? Thanks in advance..
I watched this yesterday. Truly enjoyed seeing this one and how you sketched the steeple in the background. I'd go nuts sketching in Italy
Hi Louise. You get used to it. Surrounded in inspiration.
정말 마음에 들어요. 아름다운 그림입니다.
정말 감사합니다 Peter
Muy bien muy agradable
amazing!!!
Thank you very much :)
It would be good to have the photo in view (inset) as well.
genial!!!!!....saludos amigo!!!!!
Hola a mi amigo Gracias

My current set up doesn't really allow room for a picture. I will get it set up someday.
I would love to see the reference photo at the same time you are painting so I can see where you are pulling your colors and contrast from.
Sorry bobby. Don't have the software ore the room on my close up videos.
If you take a screenshot at the beginning where Peter shows the finished painting, you can either print it off or have it as a window alongside the video window, I usually do this, it helps a lot.

Glad to hear I've been of help. Sorry, I can't suggest a book as I've never used an art tutorial book.
The building in the very back is much lighter than the buildings closer, why did you do it much darker than them?
Thanks wonderful
Thank you Dennis. Peter
Love your work! But how do you keep your paints in nice little piles in the corners? My paints quickly get spread out and all over the palette. Keep the muse going!
Thanks Cici. You should see my palette for large paintings. This one stays neater because I use so little paint with these.

HI, I take a photo of the reference picture with my mobile phone and look at that when I watch Peter paint. Try it out.
Cool
Thank you
You're welcome. Peter
Really nice
Thank you very much :)
