How To Service A BMW E90 3 Series Transmission

  • In this video I show you how to service an automatic transmission in your E90 BMW. I'm working on my 2008 335i with an N54 motor.
This car has the 6HP21 transmission which also goes by 6HP19 or 6HP19TU. This is a 6 speed ZF transmission.
I show you how to change out the bridge seal and all the tube seals along with the solenoids which do go bad over time.
In my case I was getting a rough downshift to first gear. The likely culprit was the bridge seal.
Link to a thread showing how to setup INPA/NCS Expert:

If you have Windows 10 64-Bit:

I have watched an absolute F@*k ton of videos for various issues with my e90 325. This video is by far the best repair based content I have seen. Seriously, if this video was for sale- I would have gladly bought it. Thanks for the time and effort!

I feel the exact same way! This video is going to save DIYers a fortune.
I got a $1200 quote from the dealer for this service on my E90 330i, and I know for a fact that did not include the solenoids or sleeves 🙄 simple pan/filter + fluid.
I'll spend $750 for an entire trans rebuild + solenoids and do it myself

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I have done the oil pan/filter and changed out the oil procedure before. I bought a new mechatronic sleeve before and tried replacing it. I gave up because I couldn't figure out how to remove it even with the tab sleeve pulled down. I thought it was stuck so now I know to just simply use a flat head screw driver. Plus seeing how easy it is to do the rest is a major plus. The 335i community appreciates you!

FYI anyone who comes across this, replacing solenoids solved my problem, so far. I had slip on 4-5 upshift, jolt on 5-6, and 2-1 downshift bump. Codes came up 4f8A and also 4f86 for 4-5 upshift but no other codes. Originally i just attempted with the bridge and finger seals, but that did not solve the problem. I have been able to test the car on at least one road trip and a few high load shifts, and so far so good. If anyone buys a car with a higher mileage ZF automatic transmission (over 120k miles, 200k km) at the first sign of transmission issues I would recommend this service.
I would recommend disconnecting the battery during this service.
When putting the car back together make sure the sliding arm on the valvebody is aligned with the shift selector on the trans housing.

Having the same issue on my 08 X5 3.0si, code 4F8A slip on 4-5 then goes into limp mode fixed in 3rd gear. I did replace the seals and the fluids hoping it will fix it but unfortunately it did not, going to go with the solenoids next, hopefully can get the correct ones. Thanks

@@thomasnewton5919 No coding required. unplug battery, perform service, reinstall everything, plug battery back in, reset transmission adaptives with INPA.
I only experienced a handful of missed shifts, and addressed the issue within a month of it showing up. I didn't have any other slipping on any other shifts so I assume the rest of the box was in good shape. nearly 1 year later and no issues for me. Good luck.

@@DEEuroworks I think solenoids is best bet next, if you decide to have the car repaired at a shop you can at least tell them not to get new solenoids (you'll already have them). I bought my solenoids from pelican parts. Make sure you buy the right ones (it will say which model you have on the side of the trans. You will probably have 6hp26, i guess, but make sure.

Thanks for a fantastic video - well lit, good visuals of every component. Great way to familiarize yourself before servicing a ZF transmission. I'm doing a 6hp26 in a Jaguar X350 (2004-2007 XJ Series) - Pan gasket is starting to fail. It appears to shift perfectly, no call for solenoid replacement. For preventative maintenance, I am doing all the mechatronic seals and the bridge grommet/seal, a new pan w/filter, new connector sleeve, all new pan bolts, and 6-7 liters Lifeguard 6. My previous car (same model) with no servicing went 170k -no observable transmission issues. The 75mph impact into a stopped truck w/no lights on was the enemy. I plan to keep this car, and not drive it into things at 75 mph. This job, done correctly should contribute to longevity.

glad to know it smoothed out shifting. my 07 525i with 140k shifts a little harder sometimes on 1-2 and 5-6 upshifts only. downshifts are perfectly smooth there are no transmission faults stored, I tried changing the pan/filter new fluid (oem bmw) then reset adaptations through ista, I didn't find metal shavings or debris, the fluid was pretty dark but just a little normal goop on the magnets. feels a bit better but still shifts a little bit hard sometimes on those same shifts. I'm going to give this a try. seems like a common thing to wear out. it's good to know yours is still going strong at almost 190k, my friend bought a 530xi with 220k and still drives it daily and it has some hard shifts but he is afraid to even change the fluid at that mileage.

When tightening the oil pan bolts, I noticed that after tightening to spec of 6 ft lbs on all the bolts, I try the torque on previous bolts and they were much too loose so I had to tighten again all of them criss-cross pattern. I think I went 3 times to get 6 ft lbs to even them out. This is because as other bolts get tightened, previous bolts loosen up.
This needs to be clear, otherwise, if only tightened 1 time, other initial bolts will be too loose and fluid would leak.

I wish I had changed the Solenoids when I serviced the oil the filter and the plastic components. Luckily the oil was not very dirty and found no shavings at 77k miles 335d car. I was and still am experiencing overly delayed firm shifting on gears 2-3 that was worse when cold when driving slow. Since I flushed trans and flashed a TCU tune that didn't help. I should do the service again with solenoids !!! 😭😤

Yeah I had the key in the on position for a while and I have the fogs coded to run all the type so it was a little weak but normally it's solid. I changed it not too long ago. Thanks!

The sleeve adaptor was a bitch but thanks to your advice, I got it in with a small hammer with rubber handle too! I broke the first sleeve adaptor using a pry bar but I had a spare laying around which I applied my new learned knowledge on and boom, in it went.

my trans slipped on my e90 335i zf6hp19 and ever since i had some noise when shifting from 2-3 and 4-5. I did a fluid and filter change and when i drained it it looked a little dirty and not as much as expected came out. When i did the fill it took 4 qts cold then once it was warmed up it took 3 more. They usually say around 6 qts for the fluid and filter change so i was possibly down a qt. at first it seemed to help i drove it very lightly for the first 50 miles to break in the fluid and when i did some harder pulls it completely slipped out again and hit redline and now I actually got the gear symbol on my dash and it locked me in 2nd once i pulled off the highway. I limped it home and restarted it and took it around the block and it seems to shift okay. Only code i got from mhd that drive was 2AB4 which could be completely unrelated im not sure. Would changing out the mechatronic sleeve and solinoids fix my issue or should i start looking for another trans. thank you

Not a bad overall video. I would also suggest watching Ford Tech Makuloco on the service for the Ford 6r60/80 transmission which is pretty much the same thing as the 6hp19. I would also venture to say that you could also use the ford Mercon SP and LV fluid.

Awesome video, I just inherited a 2006 330i. It shifts hard and NOW I know why! With 156,000 miles mine will also go into “limp”/“safe” mode and stick itself in what I think is 3rd gear. Do you think there is a good chance replacing seals and solenoids will fix that problem as well? Thanks again for the great video!

My 2010 335i with 129000 miles makes a clunky noise while shifting from 2nd to 1st gear while slowing down from a higher speed and braking more aggressively. I replaced the transmission fluid and the pan when the car had about 65000 on it but not any of the seals. In your opinion, would replacing the seals and not the solenoids make any sense in my case or should I do both? I plan to keep the car for another 6 to 8 months.

2-1 downshift bump is common and often cured by replacing solenoids (for example in my case)

When your gearbox isn't in the best condition with knocks and bangs going into gears drive it in sports mode . Will change the way it goes through the gears completely almost feels like the faults have disappeared

My old "figure 8 seal"... The larger side, was split, completely through, on two diagonal corners. ... That didn't seem like normal wear... Old transmission fluid was black, with some chocolate swirls. And seemed to be not enough of it. I didn't measure what came out, but it seemed light. No metal flake though.

I was wondering is he correct cuz I wanted to do this service but was thinking of using the max life fluid. He said he uses it all the time and no issues whatsoever so just curious

Fantastic video. I've seen some of your others. Always helpful. I have the same car and now experiencing the same thing. At at minimum i know i have a leak and need to replace the pan, filter and fluid. I know I can do this job based on what you have shown here, but my concern is the software. After reading the info from the link you supplied, it seems to be somewhat complicated. Any chance you can advise on that, or supply a specific step by step you did with regards to downloading the software. I have a company PC and likely won't be able to use that, but have access to another that has Windows 10. It stated something about loading another version of Windows before downloading the software. Comments?
