It's obvious why the film flopped in Asia. Most Asians in Asia do not relate or identify with the characters of the movie. In Singapore and Malaysia where the movie was made, Westernized Asians are still a small minority. Most people there do not speak English as fluently as the cast and do not even have the same mannerisms. In fact, most do not find the leading actor (who is half Borneo Dayak half English) and actress handsome or beautiful. In Singapore, the cast would be called Chia Kang Tan (Eat Potato in the Fujian dialect) meaning very Westernized. Mainland Chinese would consider the cast totally foreign or worst very strange.
I like Fung Bros. They are authentic and stand up for Asian Americans. Good work bros!

As a Malaysian, I am sick of all these rich and beautiful actors and actresses played professional victim of ‘woe to me, I am Asian American’ in every interview to promote this movie, and the grandiose, self inflated ego, OMG, they sounded like they single handedly eliminated poverty in Asia, instead of just making a movie.

Crazy Rich Asians is a book series. What they need to do is the 2nd book - China Rich Girlfriend and round it out with Rich People Problems. Essentially, follow Kevin Kwan’s story to a tee.

My biggest problem with the first one is that it's defamation against actual rich Asians in Asia - real rich Asians in Asia owns at least a city instead of just a multi million dollar condo
The producer and writers have no idea what actual rich Asians are like so they're just basing it off middle class Asians and passing it off as rich Asians because they think that the middle class life is the best that Asians can do in Asia

Weird that the Fung Bros. didn't mention that Crazy Rich Asians was a huge flop in China! The film didn't do well in most Asian markets, it only did well in western part of the world. I think only Asians who lives in the west went to see it and most Asians in Asia didn't care for it. 😂 As for the sequel or show, it will do well in the west just like the first film but audiences in Asia won't care to watch it.

Mei Mei is excited that her cousin is coming from China to Canada to live with her. Until she discovers that she is better than her in Everything. She has better grades. She can play violin and
Piano very well! Because of this Ming starts to compare her to everything she does. Soon Mei Mei loses it and lost control of her Panda and becomes much bigger red Panda!

David's 6th point doesn't really speak for a lot of people because he has a very high bar for what he considers worth watching. Some people are similar but more people are drawn in by a lower number of data points. Also for people asking why rich POC stories are made more than working class stories, entertainment has always preferred rich/highly successful stories over working class stories. It's not limited to POC stories, stories about working class or lower class white people don't get made as much. They definitely get made more but not by a lot.

If a franchise is popular enough, time won't matter as long as there's sufficient anticipation. It actually might work to their benefit to extend the hype, but it also comes with higher expectations.
The studio should adequately compensate the cast based on the existing value of the brand and projected revenue of the sequel if they want to stay true to the original. But it can often make contract negotiations more difficult because the stars have more leverage to demand higher salaries. Apparently Constance Wu was known for being a diva behind the scenes post-CRA, since that role granted her a bunch of lucrative career opportunities.
Historically speaking, most sequels end up disappointing compared to their originals. The vast majority of films are one-hit wonders. Franchises like Harry Potter and LOTR are anomalies. You have to spend years establishing brand loyalty to get fans that heavily invested in an IP. Not sure CRA has that level of cult following.

0:24 It is sad that Brenda Song was considered not Asian enough. I think they meant to say that she is not Chinese enough or at all. Brenda played Wendy Wu perfectly fine. Why can she be on Crazy Rich Asian? Brenda would've had all her Disney fans just to come watch her.

Imagine if we had only white actors, then all the Asian actors would go nuts. But because someone who is not nationality Chinese, nor speak Mandarin, then they're outcast. Can that be considered racist? This is one reason why in mainland Zhongguo, people tend to pretend to be Han ethnic so to avoid discrimination and be accepted. Hmm. Something to think about. Although many minorities there were what built Zhongguo today. Unity. By the way Brenda may have more Chinese in her than most on the cast.

i agree about being sick of the old money rich asian. need more depth. nothing new anymore when you’ve seen it once. if they can tell stories that are different, it would get a lot more interest. yes exactly like for jensen huang. or getting rich from new money. or tell a story of a middle class asian getting miserable striving to get crazy rich and learning lessons along the ways. and yeah the first movie was helped by it being a cultural representation event which is one off. But actually, i’m kinda sick of the theme of asians and money. can we show other sides of asians apart from this obsession with money which is highly stereotyped and doesn’t exist in that way in real life? most of us are simply concerned about financial security and peace of mind, not about getting crazy rich.

One of the biggest problem with Crazy Rich Asians is that the Youngs - Shanghainese, were actually not the old rich, but rather the nouveau riche. In reality they would be looked down at by the surviving old Rich Peranakan communities. The true label of old rich lies in the high Peranakan tradition they followed and the stereotypically british education they adhere to. Though most are not that rich anymore, any of the more respected and socially esteemed elites would always have claims to have Peranakan lineage dating back at least for 6 generations or more. Else, you'll just be labelled as nouveau riche.

We all watched the movie because it was novel and there was Asian representation. The cast was already too old for the teenage/ early 20s audience. We don't need them to return in their 40s. Viewers want to see young actors that they can swoon over. The movie cast lacked good looking main characters. That's why it didn't blow up

I saw Crazy Rich Asians after it came out, but I found it completely unrelatable.
The film did poorly in China and I think other East Asian countries, because it seems that people in Asia watch American movies to see stories with white European-American actors or other ethnicities, not Asian-American actors, most of whom probably do not meet the extreme, cosmetic surgery-produced appearance standards in the East Asian modeling and entertainment industries.
