The whole thing is absurd. It's just the transfer and adaptation of culture in general. There was American pop that went to Japan and became a thing then Koreans took that and mixed it up again and targeted America and global fans and it worked. It's the globalization of art. You see something similar in food. One of the craziest examples was Africans coming to southern plantations in Louisiana where there was heavy French influence. Those mixed with American culture and you got Cajun food then a hurricane hit N.O. and a bunch of Cajuns moved to Houston and brought their food and Houston has a very big Vietnamese population so they took Cajun and added Vietnamese flare to it and then they took that back to Vietnam. So in Vietnam you can now get Viet-Cajun which part African/French/American/Texan/Vietnamese/ and Cajun and it's delicious. This is exactly how this is supposed to work and it's the WHOLE FUCKING point.

Cajun food is a style of cooking that originated from the Cajun-Acadians. They were deported by the British from Acadia, a colony of New France that is now Canada. African + French in Louisiana does not equal Cajun food ,but rather Creole food. But yes, I understand your point!!!

Speaking from experience, if you barely mention that you are into korean culture (in a respectful way) and some people give you flack over it (from men and women) or make stank faces around you, those people aren’t your friends. It’s best to ignore them and hangout with real friends who have the same hobbies.
Edit: I’m also mexican-american, and never outted another person for liking Latin culture or speaking Spanish as well, so this kind of flack definitely doesn’t sit well with me either.

I couldn’t help but relate and share my own experiences. I’m a 26 y/o Taiwanese American living in the SGV and started temporarily Ubering recently. One of my most vivid recent passenger encounters was this one late night around 12AM where I picked up a guy who had been drinking with his 40~45 year old white latino brother-in-law that evening. My passenger was seated and ready to go but once his brother-in-law saw it was me who was driving he went out of his way to have a full blown conversation/rant with me about the prevalence of Asian culture, especially Korean culture, surrounding us and how his daughter has totally been absorbed by it. There wasn’t really any malice to his tone, it all was jokingly said to me, but it ultimately came off as him being petty and not being comfortable with these changes. Hell, he assumed I was Korean from the get go and proceeded to make comments about how it was practically impossible to see a “normal” looking asian back when he was growing up. The comment that really took me back was how he was joking that girls in the past would go for the “bad guys” of other ethnicities but now are going for Asian guys now for that good credit score and clean life 💀 💀 💀

Hmmm I’ve observed that it’s a surprise to some people and I believe some people , non- Asian men, don’t understand it. As a BF who grew up in diverse settings and have diverse friends I just think men in general are beautiful. However, in terms of which ethnicity I found most attractive it was always Asian. Fast forward to today I’m learning Korean but I’ve only dated Latinos( because I speak spanish) and the moment I said I’m also into Asians the amount of disrespect and misconception towards them is crazy. I find it sad that it’s okay for men to have “ preference” or a type and give an intelligent reason, but let a woman do the same thing it’s a whole different story.
I’ll give an example, I studied Spanish formally so I found myself liking Latino culture, food and their passion which made me find the men attractive and a great appreciation for the culture. That’s considered okay. Now, if I show the same respect to Korean culture, language, food and I find the men attractive, now that’s considered weird.

You're exactly correct; it's because Korean guys are getting a lot of attention globally and some people feel threatened by this.
But I'm going to add...this is nothing new, and understand the Korean guys getting the attention aren't the ones being disparaged. It's the WOMEN who follow them and like them. God forbid we have Korean k-pop idols on our lock screens or that we like k-dramas (which, btw, have a LOT in common with romance novels, another often disparaged thing that women like). People....largely men....just LOVE to put down things women like that make them somehow feel threatened. I guess it's hard to compete with a k-pop idol who sings and dances and has washboard abs. Right now, k-pop and k-dramas and SK in general is experiencing a huge surge in global popularity, and girl groups like Black Pink might have started that awhile back, but it's dominated by boy groups like BTS these days, and other groups are on the rise: Stray Kids, Enhyphen, Ateez....the list goes on. People who react negatively seem to fall into two camps: 1. They "just don't understand it" or say they don't, or 2. Man, are they threatened by it and have nothing but negative things to say.
You never hear anyone calling a girl out for loving New Jeans and Aespa or any of the girl groups. But like a guy group or love k-dramas, and wow.

If foreign women are going to Korea and by proximity to other Asian nations to meet Asian men, you know y'all doing something right, it doesn't get anymore really and better than that. On top of it the power dynamics of foreign women dating Asian men in comparison to poor Asian women dating foreign men for better life opportunities kills any argument. They came from over seas for the Asian guys because they like them not because they feel they would be able to exploit the economic advantage when western counties have a better economy. Asian homies for the win, period. Can no one beat that argument. 😂

I'm an ugly, short, upper middle aged Korean American man in NYC. Last weekend, when I returned my rental car in Manhattan, the male employee processing my return asked me if I had acted in movies. I was speechless and weirded out. Why would he ask such a question? Was this his standard greeting for everyone? Or was he a Koreaboo who watches a lot of Netflix? Or is it common for movie stars to rent/return cars in Manhattan (admittedly, it was a really nice car)? Has this happened to anyone else? To be clear, I look nothing like a K-drama actor.

I'm a Korean-American man. I recalled it was around little more than 15 years ago when Korean-American community first started to noticing non-Korean people's interests for Korean culture. During that time(before the internet started to develop big), lot of Korean-American TV broadcast decided to add English sub on their program. So from T.V. dramas and T.V. talk shows to even Korean news, people in the U.S. were able to watch what was coming from South Korea. It was before "Korean wave" hit, and their original motive was to target other Korean-American youths, who grew up in the States, and knows very little about their parents' home-country. But Korean-American broadcast came to conclusion that this was failure for most of Korean-American youth were very indifferent to Korean T.V. program. So one day, they stopped the English sub since majority of people who were watching were those who didn't needed English sub anyway. I remember watching Korean-American news couple of days after English sub was dropped. The reporter said that they were getting lots of complain calls for dropping English sub. These weren't Korean-Americans who wanted to watch Korean T.V. program. They were Americans who were complaining. The reporter went on by sharing how these people were watching Korean dramas and T.V. shows and were enjoying them thanks to English sub. One of the most popular show was classical drama. Anyway, the reporter then reported that they are going to put English sub back on, and they are going to restart newly started classical drama from the first episode with English sub, and apologized Korean viewers for restarting the dram from episode five. Couple of days after the news, Korean-American reporters decided to go out and report those who were enjoying them, asking them if they were previously interested in Korean culture, and what was it about Korean T.V. shows they liked. First, almost everyone said they didn't know anything about Korea before started watching Korean T.V. shows. Another thing I noticed that was striking was that people who enjoyed watching Korean T.V. shows were either elderly folks(mostly white) and white guys in around college/university years. Elders liked Korean dramas that depicted good family relation while elders were being respected, while they complained that American T.V. is too violent and sexual. Young white guys who watches Korean T.V. shows were culture and history buffs, who were fascinated with classical dramas. I noticed from these people, one group was absent. That is young non-Korean/non-Asian women. Back then few people who enjoyed Korean T.V. shows were either elderly men and women, or young guys who are into Asjan history. But not a trace of young women. More than 15 years after, such demography drastically transformed to younger female fans, while contents of Korean T.V. and pop music have significantly changed to attract younger female audience. While there are still non-Korean male fans(I don't know those elderly folks still likes latest Korean dramas), i think large amount of fans are women, who are being catered to with both contents and male stars that stimulates what today's Western women actually wants. And it is within such phenomenon, that usage of the term "Koreaboo" started to develop. And as this video stated, those who are using it to belittle other "Koreaboos" are typically (non-Asian) men, typically directed to (non-Asian) women.

I think the term refers to the putting of everything Korean (or from whatever culture/country) on a pedestal, disregarding the bad parts and creating a cultural hierarchy in their mind that denigrates others. There are also many people who do this towards America or European countries

  • @TheSmokey1523
    @TheSmokey1523 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

It’s does describe cultural phenomena that exists. Whether people choose to view it as positive, negative, or neutral is up to each individual or each example. Generally anyone who idolizes one culture over another is bound to be disappointed because no one is perfect. There is no need to idolize anything in the first place. People just have different preferences and even these preferences change with time. Genuinely enjoying new and different things and continually learning new things is great for everyone from any culture and should be encouraged not put down. People in America tend to love labeling things it’s part of our culture, we have a lot free time and bandwidth to be concerned about things that no one else cares much about. We may just like drama and debating and trends. Just enjoy your life.

This is what pops up in my head with the word "Koreaboo" 😂 ... but no hate to them btw.
It's also cool that in 2024 we have access to so much from other cultures. One of my friends from high school was alsways crushing on K-pop stars so I'm used to seeing that. Another likes K-dramas. I think it's mostly meant to be a compliment when someone admires 🇰🇷 culture.
Koreaboo, for me, is someone who says they love Korean culture but only knows K-pop and K-dramas, doesn't know much else outside of popular Korean media, but claims to love the culture and also tends to only date Korean men (despite not being Korean themselves). Maybe they'll start "Asian-fishing" too.

  • @Razear

I think the primary difference between the weeaboo vs Koreaboo label is that the former is typically associated with anime/manga, whereas the latter is an obsession with real people in the realm of K-pop/K-dramas. That's probably why there's more of a negative connotation. Most people might just think you're weird for being fixated on Japanese cartoons, but the Korean obsession is seen as more of a gateway to ethnic fetishization.
Yeah, the narrative that foreigners who consume Korean entertainment will suddenly think every Korean person must look and behave like the idols they worship is no different than a non-American watching a Hollywood movie thinking that the average American man must look like Brad Pitt. We're all susceptible to the way media caricaturizes and shapes our impressions.
Sessue Hayakawa actually became a male sex symbol in Hollywood in the early 20th century, even though the US already had an aura of anti-Asian sentiment stemming from the Chinese Exclusion Act. There might be a subset of white or non-Asian guys who might feel threatened by this trend, but it's yet to become mainstream. Most of these sentiments are still fairly niche compared to the boy band/Chad-esque heartthrobs that the average American woman is infatuated with.

There was a Latino group that went to the pool later and the amusement on their face was a satisfying sight. I felt such a confidence boost knowing they’re witnessing all these AMs with XFs. The halo effect is real cus the young Latina in their group kept smiling and looking at me.

You can like media, make-up, fashion from a culture different from yours. You learn another language (I mean that's amazing) and you are attracted to who you're attracted to.
Where the line crosses is trying to put on a persona of a stereotype you associate with the culture, putting down/denying your own culture or others beside the one particular one. Pedestalizing one specific culture and their people is just weird. All countries and cultures have pros and cons and even within those societies it is important to be able to see the people as the individuals they are.

We as humans, we see, hear, and learn something about another culture, through different media platforms. Then we become interested in them which is very natural, speaking, dressing, eating or dating which is completely normal. Others take it to a completely different level, because they don’t know who they are and become the culture that is fascinating them at the moment. Blacks were looked down on for many years and still are in many ways, then other cultures started emulating them, the same is happening with the Asian culture. It has alway been the older White men with younger Asian women, now women are becoming increasingly aware of Asian men, and some of the men of those cultures are not liking it! We are all human why should we not like, love each other & become genuinely interested in each other, forget the naysayers! Peace I am out! 😊
