  • Watch this video to learn about Trapezius trigger points and their connection with common tension headaches.
This video tutorial may be of use to any therapist treating trapezius trigger points either through manual therapy or the use of dry needling.
There are typically 3 sets of trigger points in the trapezius with the upper two sets generally associated with tension type headaches and in some cases migraine (not causal).
This video is an excerpt from the NAT online Trigger Point course - Treating Common Headaches.

Anyone else also get eye floaters with this trigger point when it’s active? Mine become very pronounced during this tension type headache with the pain pulsating with the pattern of my heartbeat.

This is exactly what's happening to me. Right after doing lats! Sometimes after doing shoulders. Is it knotted?

I always get tension headache when I workout at the gym then work on computer for hours. Meds ands stretching does nothing hopefully the applying pressure on the trigger points helps me get relief.

Use a tennis ball between your trapezius and a flat wall to roll out the muscles, and break up the trigger points.
When you find a trigger point and apply pressure onto it with the tennis ball you can feel the pain radiate up your neck and the back of your head. Really shows you how the pain can be referred from one area to somewhere else

It’s say these trigger points are really common yet I haven’t found anyone that can fix it in 5 years or trying different treatments. I guess they lose a customer if the treatment helps permanently

@@gordonj.wallis2826I've lost count on PTs I've meet and I've gotten a new exercises by them each. I apply it, stick to it for a long time, but to no apparent help. They help in the moment but the pain just comes back the next day. I'm really starting to think Physical Therapy is pseudo science at this moment. Nothing helps. Workouts & want take away my pain for a few hours, only to return again later on. What are my options? I think I'm gonna book an appointment for MRI if my doctor even allows it. Usually they just send me to a PT. That's how swedish heathcare works.

Hello Neil, what if someone is actually getting a migraine from this, not just a headache? At exactly the same intensity that the "headache" strikesl, the stomach gets nauseous & irritated feeling, & an overall I'll feeling grows increasingly worse. But absolutely none without the headache. Also, a strange tinge of pain & snapping that feels like a rubberband being stretched from the top of the skull to just behind & beneath the ear on the right side & pulled out & snapped back in that straight line when tilting head to left? Therapy helps some, strength training other muscles provides the longest relief, but repetative work movements inflame the scapulae & the migraine sets in inside of 30min. Tylenol(don't take AI's for GI reasons) helps for maybe 10-20 min.

I have something similiar... Try a cold shower and HIIT workouts. For whatever reason I found those give me the best relief....maybe because they loosen the muscle. Hope this helps!

Did you figure out a solution? I have been working on this pain by myself since March when I stressed the muscles to injury with intense burpees everyday and bad desk/phone posture. It flares up when I am at certain desks or positions. Be very careful to be in good posture and get things checked if you can. But if you can't, test different therapys on Bob & Brad TH-cam and build up core muscles. I wish I built core muscles earlier. Now I'm learning to break the scar tissue now from the first injuries and building strength. Testing that now. Oh and frequent breaks from the desk and technology helps! Hope you're better!

I too have this similar issue for almost a year. Massages, steroid injections n trigger point stimulation did nothing for me. Went to 2 different doctors and I was told it's a nerve issue. I just recently bought a TENS machine in hopes that it'll help.

@@danielb5721 Hey D, what I'm finding is that I have to strengthen the rhomboid & posterior deltoid muscles. There is a machine at my gym that isolates this region without having to lay face down on an incline bench using dumbbells. It's a sitting peck fly machine that reverses to do this rhomboid exercise. Strengthening these muscles seems to be the only option 4 me. But there's always bee venom therapy🤠👍
