I heard Jim had some surgery, so he may not of been healed up yet.
Jim had a minor surgery and has been sore, so he took the first week off!
Three great things happening here. 1) Onyx knew he needed help and wasn’t too proud to ask for it. 2) there was a teaching moment in the cab between father and son. 3) Nate has a keen instinct for finding the positives in every situation. Y’all have such great attitudes and work together so well. It’s a treat to see.

He's asking questions and trying to push his abilities a bit, but not too far. As long as he doesn't get discouraged, he'll catch on quickly and continue to advance his skills. Fun watching kids learn.

I’m not a farmer nor have I ever driven a tractor before but after watching this video I’d say Onyx was taught by a professional. I still enjoy watching Jim test the yankum ropes every once in awhile

Had a similar situation myself a few years ago on one of our farms. I stopped before I got to a point of being stuck and called my uncle who, much like Zach, came across the field in the planter tractor to coach me across the mud.
As he said "I wish all my operators [my dad and other uncles and a cousin] would take the few minutes to stop and call before a problem rather after the fact and cost life, limb, and large amounts of cash".
All of this is to say, Onyx did a great job (especially given his young age) by stopping and calling you.

Onyx illustrates the difference between someone who can "dive" a tractor vs. someone who is an operator. He uses common sense and intelligence to know when to stop and to recognize the importance of not abusing the equipment. Zach shows patience by fully explaining the situation so the lessons from the school of hard knocks are understood.
I enjoy farming videos, The Millennial Farmer is the best of all of them because of the family dynamic. I have so much respect and admiration for the Johnson family, can't get enough of their videos.

Awesome Onyx knew when to stop and want help. Credit to Dad and Grampa for teaching good. Love to see all three of you out working the fields. I didnt get to meet my Grandpa, but Onyx will have great memoies for later in life working with with Dad and Granpa.
Some might think that you are a spoiled beneficiary of your ancestors work, but I see and enjoy the effort you and your family puts in. Onyx reminds me of my son who is now 26 yrs old and has worked hard in our business and has taken over most of the load. We’re carpenters but I really enjoy the farming end of things, when I grow up I want to be a farmer.
Your sone is growing into an awesome little man. I love how he does the work but you make sure he has time go to play. Great job raising those kiddos

You learn by getting stuck and not getting it out on your own, EXPERIENCE. My dad would ask "why do you keep trying to go through there when you keep getting stuck"? I was just learning my limits.

It’s interesting that you check the little details like the tread pattern in the field to detect problems. Not uncommon in our line of work either. And sorry Onyx got stuck but it happens.
Almost as relieved to see planter work as you guys must be.
A few years back I did some seasonal work for an actor like you, I did the planting but with machines a bit smaller than you use. The actor's 16-year-old (cocky) son was also helping out with tillage, just like Onyx is. I was able to see him turn and the end of his field every 15 - 20 minutes or so. On my second to last day, I noticed I hadn't seen him for some time, so I called him on the radio to check if all was good. He replied "yeah all good, zero problems here..."
About an hour later, he called on the radio and said that he "might be stuck, but a quick pull with a rope would probably be enough..."
The actor asked me to go and see since I was closest by, and so I did.
His "I might be stuck" was actually stuck, as in, stuck stuck.... more than half of the rear tires were sunk into the soil, about half the front tires were as well... He managed to get both the axles buried as well. It had bottomed out from front to back, just over an hour ago, he said. (before I called to check on him, actually.) Refused to admit defeat and continued wiggling the tractor and digger. We needed a total of 5 other tractors and crazy lengths of chain/rope to get it out the next day. In total, we spend just over 15 hours to get him out and more hours to get the digger free from the earth. The actor was not too very happy after that, and when he noticed the tractor was showing several warning codes, he got even more angry. The kid had managed to damage pretty much the entire drivetrain. (full revs with diffs locked in the highest gear, steering from left to right and flipping from forward to reverse and back whilst flooring the tractor) I don't know how much the repair was, but it was not cheap for sure.
You should be extremely proud of Onyx and how he handles situations he is unsure of.
You have raised and taught him very well if you ask me!
Reminds me of when my Dad's employee sunk a tractor into a bog up to the axles. This was next to a pretty popular road, so there were bets in the area on how long it would take to get it out.
It took a couple of weeks of noodling, but Dad parked our backhoe behind the tractor, angled the bucket into the ground so it would dig in as a giant anchor, then attached the bucket to the axles with cable. He then put the tractor in reverse gear and wrapped that cable around the axles like a winch until it had pulled itself free. No significant damage!
It’s been a while since I watched one of your videos. I used to watch them on a regular basis. I’m so glad I watched this one. It was truly a beautiful video and brought back memories of all the ones that I used to watch. I think I’ll start watching them again….l

Everyone gets stuck, knowing when to give up and get help is i think almost more important than avioding the bog in the firstplace
Thats what i tell all our employees. The worst bogs weve had are very experianced people trying to get out of simple loss of traction and digging big holes

From 5:00 to 8:00 is just lovely. The way he listened to you and his whole attitude to the situation and both yours and your Dads comments in regards to how he reacted gave me goosebumps. The trust and respect you both have for him are something he wont realise right now will make him into a fine person for the rest of his life and he is an absolute credit to you and his grandfather.

It's great Onyx knew not to keep digging. It's a sign of strength and wisdom to know you need help and to be humble enough to ask for it. The test plot takes longer for sure. But, you're not just growing corn, you're planting seeds for education. I love that it's a project you and your dad could work on together with your eyes fixed well beyond harvest time. A great job knowing you're in over your head and calling for help. That's a life skill that goes along way, hell even as firefighters we struggle to learn that lesson unfortunately. You're raising him right and more importantly you're handling his learning experiences well. I know some people in that situation would yell and all it does is teach them to try till you got a big big problem in fear.
