I am 45 years old and actively saw live bands in early 90s until 2006. I've seen Nirvana, rage against the machine etc Tool is and has been quite distinctively the best band I have ever heard and it's not relatively close. All the members have discography outside the band, Maynard runs 3 bands. Maynard and Adam formed Tool, Danny joined because he felt bad they couldn't find any decent drummers and it was in the same training space he was in. Never seen a better drummer, and watching them is my passion.
Danny does have a kit with normal and electronic pads and yes he does have a gong which is directly behind him. The thing with the keyboard like pattern is the stand for the gong. He also has a synthesizer setup on his left towards the back. There is a reason he is nicknamed the Octopus.

Always be a student to expand. Danny Carey still listening as student but is running out of teachers. His the best drummer living. Great reaction guys.
He was influenced a lot by Neil Peart of Rush as well who in my opinion is the greatest drummer of all time. Not to take anything away from Buddy Rich of course.
My theory...Tool, from Opiate to Fear Inoculum, has evolved the way they have, into, in my not humble at all opinion, the greatest band ever....EVER!...because of Danny Carey. His masterful perfection of the drums, has been superb since Opiate. The rest of the guys, Maynard, Adam and Justin/Paul, you can clearly hear the difference from Opiate to now. Danny, however, was great from day one. He gave the rest of the band the space to grow.
Danny Carey states in numerous interviews that his main influence/insperation as a drummer throughout his career has been Bill Brouford from king chrimson (70's psy-rock,progressive). listen to him (B.B) and you'll soon understand exactly who, and where Danny's experemental creativity comes from.
